ABC News boss confirms ‘GMA3’ anchors are subject to internal probe after being pulled from air

New York
CNN
 —

“GMA3” co-anchors T.J. Holmes and Amy Robach will “remain off-air pending the completion of an internal review,” ABC News President Kim Godwin disclosed to network employees in a memo Monday morning.

The memo is the first time Godwin has acknowledged to the company the existence of a formal internal probe targeting the hosts of the channel’s morning show after photos surfaced of the pair engaged in an apparent romantic relationship. Godwin’s note did not specify what the probe is looking at.

CNN reported last week that the network’s legal department was conducting a review, news first broken by Semafor.

A person familiar with the matter told CNN that the probe focuses, in part, on whether the company’s morality rules might have been violated. Hosts and correspondents at news networks are generally subject to morality clauses that forbid them from behaving in a way that may cause harm to the reputation of the company.

Godwin first said last Monday that Holmes and Robach had been taken off of the air following the public disclosure of their romantic relationship. At the time, she referred to the matter as an “internal and external distraction” and requested staffers not “gossip” about the matter while at work.

In her latest memo, Godwin again acknowledged the “continuing coverage” of the matter “can be distracting.”

Godwin said a rotating cast of hosts will continue to fill in for Robach and Holmes on the program.

People familiar with the matter previously told CNN that when the Daily Mail first reached out to ABC News for comment about the relationship between Robach and Holmes, a surprised network spokesperson tried to determine whether the allegation was true. The spokesperson contacted Holmes, who poured cold water on the tabloid’s reporting.

That resulted in the spokesperson trying to push back against the outlet’s reporting. The Daily Mail wasn’t deterred and published its explosive story. When ABC representatives later saw the images included in the Daily Mail’s story, they were taken aback, the people familiar with the matter said.

ABC News declined to provide a comment on the matter.

Following reports of the relationship, Robach and Holmes continued to anchor the program. But the pair have been off the air since Dec. 5.

Prominent local political donor, businessman found dead in Atlantic Beach was subject of JSO investigation

ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. – A prominent Northeast Florida businessman and well-known political donor has died.

According to multiple sources, Kent Stermon was found dead in his car at the Mayport Post Office in Atlantic Beach on Thursday night. He was 50 years old.

Police said foul play is not suspected in the death.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, Stermon was the subject of an “active investigation” that started a few weeks before his death.

“This investigation remains ongoing at this time and will continue until its completion. As with all active investigations, there is limited information available to release at this time. However, as soon as this investigation has been completed, all applicable information will be available for release to the public,” Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters said in a statement to News4JAX.

Florida Politics reported that Stermon had also been dealing with health issues and had suffered a stroke on Monday.

Former State Representative Travis Cummings told News4JAX he and Stermon were college roommates and close friends.

“My family and the NE Florida community are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend Kent Stermon. I would ask that everyone have Christie and Abbie in their thoughts and prayers, while respecting their privacy. I don’t think Kent’s contributions to our community, our first responders and to those in need will ever be fully known or realized,” Cummings wrote in a statement to News4JAX.

Stermon served as a board member on Florida’s State University System. According to the board website, Stermon was president of Total Military Management and also served on the Florida Highway Patrol Advisory Council and was chair of the Governor’s Public Safety Transition Advisory Committee.

A long-time friend to Gov. Ron DeSantis and Mayor Lenny Curry, Stermon was a well-connected political consultant for the Duval County GOP.

Sheriff Waters sent well wishes to the Stermon family.

“My condolences go out to the Stermon family during their time of loss. Without a doubt, their grief is going to be overwhelming, and my heart goes out to them,” Waters said.

DeSantis’ communications director, Taryn Fenske, sent News4JAX a statement.

“The Governor and First Lady were shocked and saddened to hear of Kent’s passing, and their prayers (and our entire office’s prayers) are with his family during this difficult time,” the statement reads.

JSO said the incident involving his death is being investigated by the Atlantic Beach Police Department.

In 2015, Stermon was named Citizen of the Year by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

News4JAX political analyst Rick Mullaney said Stermon has other interests outside of politics.

“For Kent, two of his biggest priorities were higher education in students and law enforcement, also very strong and close relationships with law enforcement in North Florida particularly former sheriff Mike Williams,” Mullaney said. “He certainly never ran for office so you wouldn’t see him that way, he wasn’t on television and he wasn’t in the media but behind the scenes, he was very, very active.”

News4JAX has reached out to the Duval GOP and other local leaders for comment.

Stermon leaves behind his wife and teenage daughter.

Panthers release Baker Mayfield after seven games with team; former No. 1 overall pick subject to waivers

USATSI

The Carolina Panthers have moved on from the quarterback they traded for just five months ago, as Baker Mayfield has been released, the team announced Monday.

The Panthers sent the Cleveland Browns a conditional 2024 fifth-round pick in exchange for Mayfield. The fifth-round pick could have converted to a fourth-rounder based on playing time, but with his release, that will not happen. Mayfield was originally due a fully guaranteed $18.85 million in the final year of his rookie deal. The Browns agreed to pay Mayfield $10.5 million in 2022, while the Panthers agreed to pay about $5 million. Mayfield also reportedly agreed to take about a $3.5 million pay cut in order to be moved.

Mayfield got the start at quarterback to begin the year, but a high ankle sprain suffered in Week 5 knocked him out of the lineup. He went 1-5 as the starter for Carolina, and completed 57.8 percent of his passes for 1,313 yards, six touchdowns and six interceptions in seven total games played. The Panthers will move forward with Sam Darnold as the starting quarterback, and P.J. Walker as his backup.

It has certainly been a wild year for the former No. 1 overall pick. Mayfield went from the Browns franchise quarterback on the cusp of signing a new deal to requesting a trade in the same year. He then got a shot to show the Panthers he could be a legitimate starter, but was released just seven games into his Carolina tenure.

Per CBS Sports cap expert Joel Corry, Mayfield will be a $1,349,445 waiver claim, and the Houston Texans will have first dibs at claiming him. It will be interesting to see where Mayfield could go. The Texans are certainly an option, but so are the San Francisco 49ers, who just lost starter-turned-backup-turned-starter again Jimmy Garoppolo to a season-ending foot injury. The 49ers are in perfect position to make a postseason run, but given how it’s so late in the year, maybe Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch end up passing on Mayfield and rolling with the young Brock Purdy who knows their system. Either way, Mayfield is available, and looking for his next NFL home.

Jerry Seinfeld says ‘subject matter’ of Dave Chappelle’s ‘SNL’ monologue ‘calls for a conversation’

Jerry Seinfeld weighed in on the controversy surrounding Dave Chappelle’s “Saturday Night Live” monologue.

Chappelle, 49, sparked backlash over comments he made about the Jewish community during his opening routine, which critics slammed as “normalizing antisemitism.”

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Seinfeld, 68, was asked to share his thoughts on Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert’s recent debate over Chappelle’s remarks and if he thought that the monologue was funny.

“I did think the comedy was well-executed, but I think the subject matter calls for a conversation that I don’t think I’d want to have in this venue,” the comedian, who is Jewish, told the outlet.

When pressed over whether the monologue made him “uncomfortable”, the stand-up star responded, “It provokes a conversation which hopefully is productive.”

The “Seinfeld” alum was then asked if he planned to have a conversation with Chappelle as the comedians appeared to share a “close relationship.”

“I don’t have a close relationship with him,” Seinfeld said. “We’re friends and it’s not a close relationship.”

In 2018, Chappelle made a guest appearance on an episode of Seinfeld’s Netflix talk show “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.” According to the Hollywood Reporter, their exchange was featured in Seinfeld’s upcoming book about the show titled, “The Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee Book.”

Seinfeld said that while “the comedy was well-executed,” he thought that the “subject matter calls for a conversation.”

Last weekend, the “Chappelle’s Show” alum hosted “SNL” and during his 15-minute opening bit, joked about recent antisemitic comments made by Kanye “Ye” West and NBA star Kyrie Irving, who promoted an antisemitic film on Twitter.

Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt called out Chappelle over the monologue on Twitter.

“We shouldn’t expect @DaveChappelle to serve as society’s moral compass, but disturbing to see @nbcsnl not just normalize but popularize #antisemitism,” Greenblatt wrote.

“Why are Jewish sensitivities denied or diminished at almost every turn? Why does our trauma trigger applause?”

On the Tuesday night episode of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” referenced in the Hollywood Reporter article, Colbert and Stewart discussed Chappelle’s monologue.

Stewart, who is Jewish, said, “Everybody calls me like, ‘You see Dave on “SNL”?’ And I say yes, we’re very good friends. I always watch and send nice texts.”

He continued, “‘Well, he normalized antisemitism with the monologue.’ I don’t know if you’ve been on comment sections on most news articles, but it’s pretty f—–g normal. As you know, it’s incredibly normal.”

“But the one thing I will say is I don’t believe that censorship and penalties are the way to end antisemitism or to gain understanding,” Stewart explained. “I don’t believe in that. It’s the wrong way for us to approach it.”

“The Problem with Jon Stewart” host added, “Dave said something in the ‘SNL’ monologue that I thought was constructive, which, ‘It shouldn’t be this hard to talk about things.’ And that’s what we’re talking about.”

“Whether it be comedy or discussion or anything else, if we don’t have the wherewithal to meet each other with what’s reality, then how do we move forward?”

Baltimore murder case dropped against Syed, subject of ‘Serial’ podcast

Oct 11 (Reuters) – Baltimore prosecutors on Tuesday dismissed their case against a man found guilty of the 1999 killing of his ex-girlfriend in a case that drew national attention after the podcast “Serial” raised doubts about his guilt.

Adnan Syed, 42, served more than 20 years in prison for the slaying of Hae Min Lee. A circuit court judge vacated the murder conviction last month and released him after an investigation identified problems with the case, leaving prosecutors to decide whether to retry him. read more

On Tuesday, the State’s Attorney for Baltimore City Marilyn Mosby said during a news conference that she ordered prosecutors to drop the criminal case against Syed after DNA testing cast doubt on his guilt.

“The criminal justice system should be based on fair and just prosecution and crux of the matter is that we are standing here today because that wasn’t done 23 years ago,” she said, apologizing to the Lee and Syed families. “Today, justice is done.”

Mosby said no DNA was recovered from Lee’s skirt, panty hose or jacket during a touch DNA testing that was recently performed for the first time on the evidence. She added that DNA was found on Lee’s shoes, but it was not from Syed.

“Finally, Adnan Syed is able to live as a free man,” Syed’s lawyer, Erica Suter, said in a statement released to local media.

Adnan Syed, whose case was chronicled in the hit podcast “Serial,” departs the courthouse with his attorney Erica Suter, after a judge overturned Syed’s 2000 murder conviction and ordered a new trial during a hearing at the Baltimore City Circuit Courthouse in Baltimore, Maryland U.S., September 19, 2022. Mosby said the investigation into who killed Lee remains open.

Syed has maintained he was innocent and did not kill Lee, who was 18 when she was strangled and buried in a Baltimore park. The podcast “Serial,” produced by Chicago public radio station WBEZ, drew national attention to the case in 2014.

Prosecutors filed a motion on Sept. 15 to vacate the conviction after conducting a yearlong investigation alongside a public defender representing Syed. Several problems were found with witnesses and evidence from the trial, the investigation found.

Four days later, prosecutors told Baltimore Circuit Court Judge Melissa Phinn that they no longer had confidence in “the integrity of the conviction,” and that justice required that Syed at least be afforded a new trial.

Prosecutors said they had discovered new information about two alternative suspects, whom they have not named, including one who had threatened to kill Lee, and both of whom have a history of violent crimes against women. Their identities were known to the original prosecutors but not disclosed to the defense as required by law.

Phinn then ordered Syed to be released from prison, where he was serving a life sentence, and put him on home detention. Mosby said Syed will need to go through an innocence certification process for those who are wrongly convicted.

Adnan Syed case update: DNA results loom as state faces deadline to retry Serial podcast subject for murder

Adnan Syed gets new trial

Adnan Syed walked out of court a free man on Monday after two handwritten notes featuring the name of another potential suspect was discovered earlier this year, it has been revealed.

Serial, the podcast which propelled the case to global attention and first raised doubts about Mr Syed’s conviction, released a new episde on Tuesday revealing what finally led Baltimore prosecutors to rethink the 41-year-old’s conviction for the 1999 murder of his former girlfriend Hae Min Lee.

In the episode, journalist Sarah Koenig said that “messy” notes which languished in statet trial boxes for more than two decades revealed that two different people had placed two separate phone calls alerting prosecutors to the unnamed suspect prior to Syed’s 2000 conviction.

The notes were not shared with Mr Syed’s legal team – something the judge agreed was a Brady violation.

On Monday, Judge Melissa Phinn overturned Mr Syed’s conviction and ordered him to be released – after 23 years behind bars.

Prosecutors now have 30 days to decide whether they will fully drop the charges or retry the case.

Adnan Syed: What happens next for the Serial podcast subject and the murder case of Hae Min Lee?

With Adnan Syed’s conviction now quashed, questions remain around what happens next.

Will Syed be retried for Hae Min Lee’s murder?

Will one of the other suspects face charges?

Duncan Levin, former assistant district attorney in the Manhattan DA’s office and a prominent criminal defence attorney at Levin & Associates who has represented clients including Harvey Weinstein and Anna Sorokin, tells The Independent on Tuesday that he thinks this marks the end of Syed’s two-decade long legal battle.

“This is pretty much the end of the road,” he said.

The Independent’s Rachel Sharp has the full story:

Hae Min Lee’s family pleads for ‘truth’

Hae Min Lee’s family has spoken out after the man convicted of her murder 22 years ago walked free from a Baltimore courthouse on Monday.

Steve Kelly, an attorney representing the Lee family, released a statement saying that “no one has wanted to know the truth about who killed Hae Min Lee more than her family”.

The family also criticised the prosecution for the lack of notice they gave that they planned to have Adnan Syed’s sentence overturned.

“For more than 20 years, the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office has told the family of Hae Min Lee that their beloved daughter and sister was murdered by Adnan Syed,” the statement read.

“One week ago, for the first time, the family was informed that, through a year-long investigation that is apparently still ongoing, the state had uncovered new facts and would be filing a motion to vacate Mr. Syed’s conviction.

“For more than 20 years, no one has wanted to know the truth about who killed Hae Min Lee more than her family.

“The Lee family is deeply disappointed that today’s hearing happened so quickly and that they were denied the reasonable notice that would have permitted them to have a meaningful voice in the proceedings.”

Serial host says Syed’s case shows issues in justice system

Serial host Sarah Koenig has said that Adnan Syed’s case contains almost all the issues with the US’s criminal justice system.

As one of the pioneers of the true crime phenomenon, the podcast divided opinion around Syed’s innocence or guilt.

“We knew people would come to different conclusions, of course,” Ms Koenig told the New York Times.

“Barring some smoking-gun evidence, which we didn’t find (and it seems like no one else has either), there was no way for us to say definitively what happened.

“But what we were pointing out in our story was that the timeline of the case and the evidence in the case had serious problems. Which meant the people who convicted Adnan of murder, they didn’t know what happened either.”

She added: “And so this kid goes to prison for life at 18, based on a story that wasn’t accurate. That’s what we wanted people to think about: Even setting aside the question of Adnan’s guilt or innocence, are we OK with a system that operates like that?”

Ms Koenig went on to list off the various systemic issues which played out in the 2000 case, which she said are far from unique to Syed’s case.

“Questionable interrogation tactics and tunnel vision by police; an overtaxed system that fails to properly interrogate evidence; prosecutors withholding evidence from the defense; our country’s tolerance for insanely long prison sentences; juveniles treated as adults when science tells us they aren’t; racism; how grindingly difficult it is to get the system to take another look at your case once you’ve been convicted; prosecutors and cops who don’t police themselves and then double down when they’re accused of doing something wrong,” she said.

“It’s pretty much — you name it, this case has it. And while I’m up here: There is nothing unusual about the presence of these systemic problems in Adnan’s case. Nothing.”

So far, prosecutors have stopped short of exonerating Syed, saying their request to overturn his conviction – and the subsequent judge’s ruling – does not mean a declaration of innocence but that “in the interest of fairness and justice, he is entitled to a new trial”.

True crime is America’s guilty pleasure. Is it harmful?

Maybe you’ve seen The Thing About Pam, the recent NBC black comedy starring Renee Zellwegger as convicted killer Pam Hupp – and you devoured it in one binge-session. Or maybe you watched it week to week, reading reviews of how much time Zellwegger spent in the makeup chair.

But you probably didn’t know that a detective who worked on the actual Hupp case thought the show was “despicable,” misrepresentative of the case, the witnesses, the investigation, and everything else.

The true crime phenomenon shows no sign of slowing down – as documentaries, podcasts, dramatizations and all manner of content continue to explode across platforms – and the reaction of that Hupp detective is not unusual. Armchair sleuths may spend countless hours poring over the lives of crime victims while concocting their own theories, but family members, investigators, victims themselves and even offenders frequently bristle when they see portrayals of their own lives.

Why are we so fascinated by gory tales of death, murder and mayhem? And is the public’s bombardment with true crime content helping or hurting?

The Independent’s Sheila Flynn investigates:

Sarah Koenig says vacation of Adnan Syed’s conviction is ‘deja vu’ for defence

Serial host Sarah Koenig has said that the vacation of Adnan Syed’s conviction is “deja vu” for the defence who have argued there were flaws in the case for years.

Ms Koenig told the New York Times that many of the arguments made by the prosecution calling for Syed’s release are “the same” as those already made by his legal team, during his decades-long fight to prove his innocence in the 1999 murder of Hae Min Lee.

“A lot of what the state is saying in this motion probably feels like déjà vu for the defense side,” she said.

“Many of the arguments are the same — unreliable witness statements, unreliable cellphone evidence. A timeline of the crime that doesn’t hold up.”

Ms Koenig, who propelled the case to global attention through her podcast series, said that the “bombshell” new revelation came from the details that the state had failed to hand over information about another potential suspect back during the original case.

Maryland AG pushes back at arguments of a Brady violation

Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh has pushed back against the argument that there were Brady violations in the case of Adnan Syed.

Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby said that prosecutors withheld information about two other potential suspects from Syed’s defence team at his 2000 trial.

Based on that, she said that his conviction should be overturned, pending the possibility of a new trial.

A Brady violation is where a prosecutor fails to provide the defence with evidence that could be helpful or beneficial to a defendant’s case.

Mr Frosh released a statement saying that the allegations that prosecutors did not hand over evidence to Syed’s defencce is false.

“Among the other serious problems with the motion to vacate, the allegations related to Brady violations are incorrect,” Mr Frosh said in the statement.

“Neither State’s Attorney Mosby nor anyone from her office bothered to consult with either the assistant state’s attorney who prosecuted the case or with anyone in my office regarding these alleged violations.

“The file in this case was made available on several occasions to the defense.”

Rabia Chaudry jokes he’s not looking to ‘hook up’ with ‘thirsty’ ladies

A family friend of Adnan Syed has joked that the 41-year-old is not “looking to hook up” with the influx of “thirsty” ladies who have reached out following his bombshell release from prison.

“I keep getting asked this question and I’m only answering it once because first of all this is not my role in his life, but also people get a grip,” tweeted Rabia Chaudry on Wednesday morning.

“Adnan is not looking to hook up or meet any of the very thirsty, er I mean interested, ladies reaching out.”

Ms Chaudry, an attorney and family friend, shared a GIF of actor Julia Stiles gesturing to move on.

What we know about two alternate suspects in 1999 murder

Adnan Syed walked out of court a free man on Monday, after an almost year-long investigation uncovered new evidence about the possible involvement of two alternative suspects in the 1999 slaying of student Hae Min Lee.

On Monday, Baltimore City Circuit Judge Melissa Phinn vacated the 41-year-old’s conviction “in the interest of justice”, granted him a new trial and ordered him to be released under home detention while the investigation into Lee’s murder continues.

His release came days after Maryland prosecutors made a bombshell request for his conviction to be quashed.

On Wednesday – after more than two decades behind bars where Syed has continued to maintain his innocence of any involvement – Baltimore City State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby filed a motion to throw out his conviction.

She said that “the state no longer has confidence in the integrity of the conviction” based on doubts about the validity of cellphone records as well as new information about two unnamed suspects.

Wednesday’s court filing did not name the two alternate suspects in the case, citing an ongoing investigation.

However, prosecutors said that the two alternate suspects were both known to the initial 1999 murder investigation and were not properly ruled out or disclosed to the defence.

Serial host says she ‘did not see this coming at all’

Serial host Sarah Koenig has said that she “did not see it coming at all” when prosecutors made the bombshell announcement last week that they were calling for Adnan Syed’s release.

After following the case for close to a decade – and seeing multiple legal setbacks for Syed along the way – she told the New York Times that she was “shocked” when the state suddenly “pulled off a rubber mask and underneath was a scowling defense attorney”.

“I was shocked. I did not see this coming at all. One of the first things I did was call Adnan’s brother and then his mother — they told me they didn’t know either,” she said.

“The prosecutors who filed the motion to release him kept it pretty tight, it seems.

“But the shocking part was that this was coming from the state’s side. I felt almost disoriented for about a day. Like the city prosecutor’s office suddenly pulled off a rubber mask and underneath was a scowling defense attorney.”

Ms Koenig launched the podcast in 2014, after being contacted by Syed’s family friend and attorney Rabia Chaudry.

The podcast series propelled the case to international attention and raised serious doubts about Syed’s conviction, as one of the pioneers of the true crime phenomenon.
