String of Child Deaths from Strep A Alarm Health Officials

Photo: Shutterstock (Shutterstock)

A common bacterial infection known as Strep A has likely killed over a dozen children in the UK in recent months. On Friday, health officials reported yet another fatality linked to the bacteria, which can, in rare cases, cause a more invasive and life-threatening infection. There are likely several reasons why the outbreak appears to be more severe than usual, though government experts have ruled out the possibility of a more virulent strain behind it.

At least 13 children in England have died within a week of developing a severe Strep A infection since September, according to an update released Thursday from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), while two suspected deaths have been reported in Ireland and Wales. Officials with the UKHSA and the Brighton & Hove City Council jointly announced the latest suspected death Friday, though it’s not yet clear whether this death is in addition to the official tally, according to the BBC. At least 60 deaths overall have been reported in England.

Strep A, also known as group A streptococcus, are bacteria that can cause a variety of infectious diseases along different parts of the body, including strep throat, scarlet fever, and impetigo. Typically, these infections only cause mild illness or can be managed effectively with antibiotics. But every once in a while, they can cause much more serious trouble. The particular form of Strep A tied to these deaths is called invasive group A streptococcus (iGAS) disease, which happens when the bacteria (or their toxins) reach more vulnerable parts of the body like the bloodstream. Once there, the infection can rapidly trigger life-threatening symptoms like septic shock, organ failure, or necrotizing fasciitis (the “flesh-eating” disease)

Strep A outbreaks do occur regularly, but the typical season for it in the UK starts in the beginning of the year. This season is on track to be the most widespread and deadliest in recent years. The last severe Strep A season occurred between 2017 to 2018, which ultimately caused 355 deaths in total, including 27 deaths in children.

A 2019 study found evidence that the recent emergence of new Strep A strains contributed to large spikes of scarlet fever reported in the UK over the latter half of the 2010s. But according to the UKHSA, there’s no data suggesting that a new variant is responsible for the intensity or greater rate of cases seen this year.

Instead, they argue the rise is likely the result of “increased susceptibility to these infections in children due to low numbers of cases during the pandemic, along with current circulation of respiratory viruses.” This year has seen the return of respiratory infections like the flu and RSV in the UK and elsewhere, often in waves outside of their usual season. And it’s known that people can be more vulnerable to developing iGAS if they catch Strep A while sick with another infection like the flu.

Like the UK, the US has been seeing high levels of flu and RSV activity this fall and winter, while cases of covid-19 are currently lower than they have been during the past two winters but are increasing lately. And the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is looking into whether there’s been an increase in iGAS cases among children in the U.S. this year as well.

‘The Flash’ Star Ezra Miller Apologizes for String of Scandals

“The Flash” star Ezra Miller says they are seeking treatment for “complex mental health issues.”

In a statement provided to Variety by a representative of the actor, Miller broke their silence about the troubling behavior that they have exhibited in recent years, which has led to a series of legal issues and assault and abuse allegations. Miller also apologized for their actions.

“Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment,” Miller says. “I want to apologize to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behavior. I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe and productive stage in my life.”

The embattled actor, who is non-binary and uses they and them pronouns, played the DC Comics character Barry Allen in 2017’s “Justice League” and its 2021 counterpart, “Zack Snyder’s Justice League.” But their role in the comic book franchise has been overshadowed by their off-screen behavior, which has alarmed friends and associates of the actor, as well as Warner Bros., the studio behind “The Flash.”

Most recently, Miller was charged with felony burglary in Vermont, after state police investigated an incident involving several bottles of alcohol being taken from a residence while the homeowners were not present. The actor made headlines in 2020 after a recording surfaced in which they appeared to be choking a woman outside of a bar in Iceland. No charges were filed. The actor has been arrested twice in Hawaii this year, once for disorderly conduct and harassment. In the Hawaii incidents, Miller pled no contest to a single count of misdemeanor disorderly conduct and paid a $500 fine and $30 in court costs. The harassment charge was dismissed.

The series of scandals has become a snowballing public relations issue, not only for Miller, but also for Warner Bros. Discovery, which has employed the actor across two of its cornerstone franchises — DC Comics films and the “Harry Potter” spinoff series “Fantastic Beasts.” A source close to the studio says that Warner Bros. supports Miller’s decision to seek professional help.

“The Flash” is set to open in theaters on June 23, 2023 and reportedly serves as a key entry in the studio’s DC Comics films, featuring appearances by Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton as Batman.

Perseverance rover discovered a piece of string on Mars

Sign up for CNN’s Wonder Theory science newsletter. Explore the universe with news on fascinating discoveries, scientific advancements and more.

The rover’s front left hazard avoidance camera took a photo of the light-colored object on July 12 that some people likened to spaghetti.

Officials at the space agency confirmed that they believe the object to be a string left over from Perseverance’s landing.

The string could be from the rover or its descent stage, a component similar to a rocket-powered jet pack used to safely lower the rover to the planet’s surface, according to a spokesperson for the Perseverance mission at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

Perseverance had not previously been in the area where the string was found, so it’s likely the wind blew it there, the spokesperson said.

Currently exploring an ancient delta called Jezero Crater, the rover is looking for signs of microscopic life that may have called Mars home billions of years ago, the spokesperson said. This crater is where Perseverance originally landed on February 18, 2021.
When Perseverance revisited the site of the string four days later, the object was gone.

This is not the first time the rover has stumbled upon pieces of material left over from its descent on Mars.

Perseverance’s cameras snapped a photo of a fragment of shiny foil in mid-June, according to a tweet from the rover’s official account. The team believed it to be a part of the rover’s thermal blanket, a thin material that regulates temperature, that may have fallen off during the descent stage.

The rover’s team at NASA is researching more about the new piece of debris and plans to release more details later this week.
