Justin Bieber sells rights to ‘Baby,’ rest of music catalog

NEW YORK (AP) — Justin Bieber’s record-breaking pop hits from “Baby” to “Sorry” are no longer his after the superstar sold the rights to all his early career music.

The Canadian-American pop star’s six albums, including his most recent album “Justice,” are part of the massive catalog sale deal with Hipgnosis, a U.K-based music investment company.

Top artists like Sting, Bob Dylan and Shakira have in recent years sold rights to their catalogs for massive sums, but at 28 Bieber is the youngest superstar singer to do so. Hipgnosis acquired Shakira’s catalog in 2018.

Bieber’s publishing copyrights, songwriter’s ownership, master recordings and all rights of his entire catalog of recordings made through 2021 are now owned by Hipgnosis. That covers 290 titles, including hits like “Peaches” “Beauty and the Beat” music that Bieber has been releasing since he was 13.

The deal’s financial details have not been disclosed, but Billboard Magazine reports that the sale was worth an estimated $200 million.

“Justin is truly a once in a generation artist and that is reflected and acknowledged by the magnitude of this deal.” Scooter Braun, Bieber’s longtime manager, said in a statement Tuesday.

All of Bieber’s six official studio albums have been certified platinum or multiplatinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, and he’s recorded 33 singles that have been designated platinum or multi-platinum globally. A song or album that sells more than a million copies receives platinum certification, while works that surpass two million sales become multiplatinum.

Bieber is the eighth most listened to artist in the world on Spotify, with 69 million monthly listeners and over 30 billion streams. His video for “Baby” has been streamed more than 2.9 billion times on YouTube.

“The impact of Justin Bieber on global culture over the last 14 years has truly been remarkable,” said Merck Mercuriadis, the founder of Hipgnosis Song Management.

Mercuriadis said that Bieber is a defining artist in the streaming age and “the acquisition ranks among the biggest deals ever made for an artist under the age of 70.”

Splash Mountain is gone. These 7 other Disney closures still sting.

Comment

On the last day of rides for Splash Mountain at Walt Disney World, lines swelled to nearly four hours long. Video footage on social media from early Sunday morning showed masses of visitors rushing to the Florida-based attraction, which is slated for a renovation to add a new theme and remove ties to source material that has been decried as racist.

Officially shutting down the popular ride was the latest move in a long-simmering controversy that became a touch point in the culture war over the “woke” direction of the Walt Disney Co. — and the latest Disney attraction fans can wistfully categorize as “gone but not forgotten.”

The log flume attraction, which opened in 1992 in Florida, is based on “Song of the South,” a 1946 film set in post-Civil War Georgia that has been under fire since its release. Disney CEO Bob Iger said in 2020 the movie would never appear on the company’s streaming platform, noting that he had long felt that it “was just not appropriate in today’s world.”

Disney’s Splash Mountain ride is based on ‘Song of the South.’ Petitioners want to change that.

Splash Mountain will become Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, based on the animated film “The Princess and the Frog,” which featured the company’s first Black princess. Disney announced the change in the summer of 2020 as the country faced a larger racial reckoning.

Disneyland’s version of Splash Mountain, which opened in California in 1989, has not yet closed, but it will undergo the same transformation. Both updated versions are scheduled to reopen in late 2024.

Some fans tried to mount a “Save Splash Mountain” campaign, even urging opponents of the switch to enlist the help of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R). Others acknowledged they would miss a classic but were looking forward to a new chapter for the ride. Still others argued that it was past time for the original to go, given its source material.

How Florida’s war with Disney could change the park experience

While closing Splash Mountain was more controversial than most Disney changes, other closures and re-imaginings have also caused consternation. Some rides have been torn down to make room for new attractions. Others have been renovated with new storylines, designs and characters. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure will still be a log flume ride, following preparations for a Mardi Gras celebration.

“When you’re in charge of Disney, you have to make decisions where you know nobody’s going to be totally happy,” said David Mumpower, who has written three books about Disney rides and attractions. “It’s an impossible challenge because you have to think about the past and show reverence to it. You [also] have to think, ‘What would somebody born today want to do?’”

These seven retired rides and attractions still make many fans nostalgic — or heated.

When it opened in 1989 with Disney-MGM Studios — the park that is now known as Disney’s Hollywood Studios — this ride took visitors through scenes from famous films, from “Alien” to “Casablanca” to “Singin’ in the Rain,” according to official Disney fan club D23. A live-action twist featured a tour guide and hijacking of the ride vehicle by a gangster or bandit character. It closed in 2017 and reopened in early 2020 as Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, which carries riders through a cartoon world.

Quincy Stanford, a project manager at Disney news and tips site AllEars.net, said the Great Movie Ride is one of the main attractions that the site’s readers miss.

“Great Movie Ride is one of those that did create this cult following,” she said. “They loved riding it; it was a different riding experience every time because it had the live actor element.”

At Walt Disney World, Epcot’s World Showcase highlights countries around the world. Norway’s offering featured this boat ride showcasing the country’s seafaring history, with a heavy emphasis on adventure. There were also trolls, an exciting backward plunge and a scenic fishing village.

“There’s nothing else like it; there never was,” said Mumpower, who has also written about closed Disney rides for the Disney guide MickeyBlog. “It was like a really weird ride that didn’t fit with anything else at Epcot, but it fit perfectly with the Norway pavilion.”

After opening in 1988, the ride closed in 2014. Its replacement, Frozen Ever After, opened in 2016 using the same track.

“I’m still salty about Maelstrom — and I think Frozen Ever After is amazing,” Mumpower said.

Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

A stormy night, a rickety elevator and a “Twilight Zone” theme provide a lead-up to a thrilling 13-story drop in this fan favorite.

The original ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida, which opened in 1994, remains unchanged, but the version that opened in 2004 at Disney California Adventure closed in 2016. It reopened the next year as Guardians of the Galaxy — Mission: Breakout!

“That’s one of the ones that had a massive uproar, a major reluctance to be changed when it was announced,” Stanford said. But she said fan reaction since it reopened has been positive, especially since it fits into an Avengers Campus land that opened in 2021: “People rode it, and a lot of people like it better. There’s certainly a contingent of people who prefer the original Tower of Terror.”

This overhead transportation system connected Tomorrowland and Fantasyland at both Disneyland and Magic Kingdom. At Disneyland, the gondola system opened in 1956 and closed in 1994. The Magic Kingdom version opened in 1971 and closed in 1999.

“For the very small me, that was like the greatest thing about Disney, was they had things in the sky that could take you from place to place,” Mumpower said. “Seriously, to this day, I kind of look up in the sky sometimes and look for the gondolas.”

The first version of the ride, based on the 1949 film “The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad,” opened at Disneyland in 1955 and remains in place. But at Magic Kingdom in Florida, the ride featuring two separate tracks opened with the park in 1971 and closed in 1998. It was replaced with the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.

An unusually dark experience, Mr. Toad included a train collision and journey to hell. Still, Stanford said, readers often say they miss it.

“For the people who went to Magic Kingdom between the ’80s and the ’90s … that ride’s their nostalgia,” she said. “Get the Winnie the Pooh out of here. I want to go to hell.”

Disney tries a new approach after angering fans: Cutting fees

The Disneyland ride operated for nearly 30 years, from 1967 until 1995. It traveled inside several attractions in Tomorrowland, a future-and-space-themed part of the park.

“Although the PeopleMover was Walt Disney’s response to an outdated Tomorrowland, it eventually came to be considered too tame over time,” the Walt Disney Family Museum says on its website.

The PeopleMover was replaced by the high-speed Rocket Rods, which opened in 1998, but the replacement closed in 2000 — a swap Mumpower describes as a “fiasco.”

“What they chose to do there makes it worse,” he said. “If you chose to replace something, the next thing better be awesome.”

This ride has gone through several iterations, but fans miss the version that opened in 1983 featuring a red-haired host called Dreamfinder with a purple dragon named Figment.

A new ride called Journey Into Your Imagination came along in 1999, and the ride changed again to become Journey Into Imagination With Figment in 2002.

But Stanford said the original is “a massive one that people still talk about” when it comes to rides that have been changed.

“They’re just like, ‘Give us the original ride,’” she said. “‘Why did you change it in the first place?’”

AEW loads up Grand Slam with Sting, Joe, Cargill, Wardlow, Darby, Hangman, and more!

AEW is putting its best foot forward next week in New York City without CM Punk or The Elite around for “Grand Slam” in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

These “Grand Slam” editions of Dynamite and Rampage have been hyped up like pay-per-view cards filled with title matches and all of AEW’s top stars (minus MJF).

Tonight’s (Sept. 16) episode of Rampage rounded out the week with several more matches featuring stars like Sting, Samoa Joe, Jungle Boy, and more.

This includes a Battle Royal (featuring Hangman Page) where the winner gets a world title match down the line, and Diamante teasing a woman from the 305 area code backing her up in a TBS title match against the undefeated Cargill. It was also interesting to hear Brody King admit that Sting and Darby Allin cut the head off the snake, which is a reference to Malakai Black’s conditional release from AEW.

Let’s see what the final lineups for Grand Slam look like:

Sept. 21 (Dynamite)

• Jon Moxley vs. Bryan Danielson for the AEW World championship

• Toni Storm (c) vs. Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D. vs. Serena Deeb vs. Athena for the interim AEW Women’s title

• Swerve in our Glory (c) vs. The Acclaimed for the AEW Tag Team championship

• Claudio Castagnoli (c) vs. Chris Jericho for the ROH world title

• PAC (c) vs. Orange Cassidy for the All-Atlantic title

Sept. 23 (Rampage)

• HOOK & Action Bronson vs. 2point0

• Eddie Kingston vs. Sammy Guevara

• Sting & Darby Allin vs. Brody King & Buddy Matthews in a No DQ match

• Jade Cargill (c) vs. Diamante for the TBS title

• Rey Fenix vs. Jungle Boy

• Ricky Starks vs. Powerhouse Hobbs

• Wardlow & Samoa Joe vs. Tony Nese & Josh Woods

• Grand Slam Golden Ticket Battle Royal

Eight matches is a lot for a two hour episode of Rampage, so there might be a couple squashes planned. I’m looking at you, Tony Nese.

Are you excited for AEW’s Grand Slam week of shows, Cagesiders?

Kyle O’Reilly Says Sting Gave Him ‘Swollen Testes’ After Rampage Attack

As noted, Sting made his return last night on AEW “Rampage.”

In last night’s main event, Darby Allin defeated Bobby Fish. Immediately after the match, Fish attacked Allin and Kyle O’Reilly came to the ring with a steel chair to help Fish. The lights went out, and Sting appeared. He then hit O’Reilly between the legs with his bat.

Earlier today, O’Reilly tweeted that he was just a fan trying to “offer” a seat to Sting, but instead, he got “swollen testes.”

Shameful and disgusting act by the man called Sting. Here I am; a fan about to offer him a seat (he isn’t a spring chicken let’s face it and he twisted his ankle I think) and what do I get to show for it? Swollen testes. Absolutely uncalled for. https://t.co/u5Q7Ipixei

Back in May on “Dynamite,” Sting was attacked by The Undisputed Elite. After taking a double superkick from The Young Bucks, he had his ankle smashed by Kyle O’Reilly.

O’Reilly has been with AEW since December 2021. He made his AEW debut at “Dynamite: Holiday Bash,” where he reunited with Bobby Fish and Adam Cole.

Below is a video of Sting’s return:

Results of last night’s AEW “Rampage” are available here.

The Hardys officially join forces with Sting after AEW books a rare finish

On a typical episode of AEW Rampage, three of the four scheduled matches have an obvious winner. That was the case when Darby Allin was advertised to take on The Butcher. Darby was definitely going over, of course. It’s how he got there that was a bit unexpected.

First, here’s your obligatory ‘Darby Allin is insane’ dive that occurred very early in the match:

Butcher dominated Darby for most of the match after that point. He was extra motivated and looking for payback after Darby put him on the shelf for five months with an injury last year. Butcher’s sadism on this night included swinging Darby around the ring by his neck, brutally ramming Allin into the guardrail and the steel steps outside the ring, and turning his own Texas Cloverleaf into a powerbomb:

Darby was desperate late in the fight, and he finally managed to land his most effective maneuver – the Coffin Drop – all the way to the outside floor:

The Butcher couldn’t make it back into the ring on time, and Darby won by count out. Count outs and disqualifications are a very rare thing in AEW, and I definitely wasn’t expecting to get one in this match.

It didn’t take long before Andrade, Private Party, Butcher, and The Blade stormed the ring. Sting tried to fend them off, but the lopsided numbers were too much for Sting and Darby to handle.

That’s when The Hardy Boyz Brothers showed up for the save:

Matt challenged the heels to an 8 man tornado tag match on Dynamite next week. Tony Khan later made it official. It will be The Hardys, Sting, and Darby Allin vs. The Blade, The Butcher, and Private Party.

Are you hyped to see The Blade single-handedly destroy The Hardys, Sting, and Darby next week on Dynamite? Let us know in the comments below, Cagesiders.

Sting Sells His Songwriting Catalog for an Estimated $300 Million

Sting has sold his songwriting catalog, including hits with the Police like “Every Breath You Take” and “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic,” and solo work like “If You Love Somebody Set Them Free,” to the Universal Music Group, in music’s latest blockbuster catalog deal.

The transaction, announced on Thursday by Universal’s music publishing division, the Universal Music Publishing Group, covers Sting’s entire output as a songwriter. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the deal is estimated to be worth around $300 million.

Over the last couple of years, major music conglomerates and Wall Street investors have poured billions of dollars into music deals, driven by the growth of streaming, low interest rates and old-fashioned competition.

In December, Sony purchased Bruce Springsteen’s entire catalog — covering both his songwriting and recorded music, which have separate copyrights — for around $550 million. Bob Dylan, in separate deals, sold his songwriting to Universal for more than $300 million, and his recordings to Sony for an estimated $150 million to $200 million. Paul Simon, Tina Turner, Mötley Crüe, Stevie Nicks and Neil Young have all struck deals in the eight and nine figures.

Sting’s deal covers both the copyrights for his songs — which total more than 600 — and his royalties as a songwriter, which means that Universal would stand to receive all future music publishing income from his work. In 2019, the licensing agency BMI said that “Every Breath You Take,” from 1983, had become the most-performed song in its catalog of over 14 million pieces, beating out “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’,” a No. 1 hit in 1965 by the Righteous Brothers that was written by Phil Spector, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.

Sting’s recorded music output, for his solo work as well as by the Police, his band, is also controlled by Universal.

“It is absolutely essential to me that my career’s body of work have a home where it is valued and respected,” Sting, whose real name is Gordon Sumner, said in a statement. “Not only to connect with longtime fans in new ways but also to introduce my songs to new audiences, musicians and generations.”
