How Breanna Stewart’s move impacts the Liberty, Storm and the WNBA

Are the New York Liberty the 2023 WNBA title favorites now that Breanna Stewart plans to sign with the team? Stewart announced the move Wednesday on Twitter.

Having already added an MVP this offseason by trading for Jonquel Jones, the Liberty added a second via free agency on Tuesday, landing two-time WNBA Finals MVP Stewart. With second-team pick Sabrina Ionescu already on the roster, New York now boasts 30% of last year’s All-WNBA selections — matching the Las Vegas Aces’ total — and might not be done adding star players just yet.

Let’s take a closer look at how the Liberty project with their new star-studded frontcourt, particularly in comparison to the Aces after the defending champions loaded up with the addition of Candace Parker.

Additionally, let’s consider what’s next for the Seattle Storm after Stewart’s departure. With All-Star guard Jewell Loyd still in Seattle, rebuilding doesn’t seem to be in the cards, barring a trade. But the Storm will have a very different look in 2023 after the departure of Stewart and retirement of legendary point guard Sue Bird.

How do Stewart and Jones fit together?

It’s safe to say that adding two former MVPs, both in their prime, during the same offseason is unprecedented in WNBA history. In fact, before this year, just two former MVPs had ever changed teams prior to age 30: Tina Charles when she was traded to the Liberty in 2014 and Elena Delle Donne upon her trade to the Washington Mystics in 2017.

Back in 2008, Seattle added a pair of former MVPs in Yolanda Griffith and Sheryl Swoopes. However, Griffith was 38 when she joined the Storm and Swoopes was soon to be 37. At that stage of their careers, both were role players, not anchor pieces like Jones and Stewart.

Undoubtedly, teaming up will require some sacrifice for Jones and Stewart — probably more so Stewart since Jones already saw her usage drop after it reached a career-high 27% during her MVP campaign. Still, last season Jones finished 24% of the Connecticut Sun’s plays with a shot, trip to the free throw line or turnover. Stewart was at 29% in Seattle.

Some of those opportunities in New York will come from replacing Natasha Howard, who had a 26% usage rate and was traded to the Dallas Wings as part of the Jones deal. But the Liberty’s other starter up front was center Stefanie Dolson, who will likely head to the bench, and Dolson’s usage rate was a modest 17%. That was a 43% combined share of the offense for last year’s New York frontcourt starters, as compared to 53% for Jones and Stewart with their former teams.

So long as Jones and Stewart are comfortable with fewer touches and shots, with Ionescu surely dialing back her offense as well, the fit should work well. Jones and Stewart are both capable of stepping away from the basket and each has enough gravity as an outside shooter (Stewart is a career 37% 3-point shooter, while Jones has hit 38% on lower volume) to space the floor while the other posts up or runs pick-and-roll with Ionescu.

At the other end, Jones and Stewart were among seven players to receive votes for Defensive Player of the Year in 2022, with Stewart making the All-Defensive first team and Jones on the second team. Both players have guarded multiple frontcourt spots over the course of their careers, giving Liberty coach Sandy Brondello flexibility in how to deploy them for maximum benefit.

Right now, I’d keep the Aces as WNBA championship favorites because it should be easier for them to integrate Parker than it will for New York to get comfortable with multiple new starters. Still, the terrifying possibility for the rest of the league is the Liberty aren’t finished adding to the roster.

Could New York add another All-Star?

ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne reported earlier this month that Courtney Vandersloot’s free agency would be a factor in Stewart’s decision. The Liberty were among four teams Vandersloot was expected to meet with before making her own choice. Could New York still add Vandersloot, too?

Yes, particularly if Stewart and Vandersloot are willing to take less money than their maximum possible salaries. If Stewart signs for the maximum $202,154 for players changing teams besides a sign-and-trade, that would leave the Liberty about $160,000 to offer Vandersloot, per salary data from HerHoopsStats.com.

By waiving reserves Michaela Onyenwere and DiDi Richards, New York could get that offer above $180,000, in the ballpark of what Vandersloot made last season with the Chicago Sky ($195,000). To offer more than that, New York would have to trade a player with a protected contract.

One wild card for the Liberty’s 2023 roster: The team has a pair of key international players — guard Marine Johannes and center Han Xu — who are reserved, meaning they can negotiate only with New York. If those players re-sign for the minimum salary, it will be much easier for the Liberty to fill out the roster with Stewart and another highly paid free agent.

From a fit standpoint, Vandersloot would make sense in New York given the success Ionescu enjoyed after the Liberty signed point guard Crystal Dangerfield midseason and moved Dangerfield into the starting lineup. Freed from primary distribution responsibilities, Ionescu emerged as a nightly triple-double threat. Adding Vandersloot would make New York my favorite to win the first title in franchise history.

What’s next for the Storm

We saw a Seattle team without Bird and Stewart reach the playoffs in 2019, when both missed the season due to injury. The Storm even won a playoff game before being eliminated in the second round by the Los Angeles Sparks.

Besides holdovers Loyd and center Mercedes Russell, that team also featured Howard, who won Defensive Player of the Year and earned All-WNBA first team honors. If Seattle is to replicate its 2019 success, a similar breakthrough will probably be required from fourth-year post Ezi Magbegor, like Han and Johannes a reserved player this offseason.

As a starting center through the All-Star break last season, Magbegor seemed to be on that kind of trajectory. She averaged 11.3 PPG and 6.5 RPG as a starter while leading the league with 2.3 BPG. Magbegor struggled to make the same impact after Charles replaced her in the starting lineup, seeing her per-minute averages fall in addition to less playing time.

There’s much work to be done for the Storm, who have just Loyd and Russell under contract but also possess the most cap space in the WNBA. In particular, Seattle needs to find a replacement for Bird at point guard. Vandersloot, a native of the Seattle area, could still be in the mix there. Otherwise, the Storm are likely looking at a drop-off at point guard to restricted free agents Natisha Hiedeman and Marina Mabrey or unrestricted option Moriah Jefferson.

With so many open roster spots, it’s tough to say how competitive Seattle can be without Stewart. For now, Loyd’s presence, Magbegor’s development and the Storm’s ability to land veteran free agents in the past suggest the team still should be in the mix for the playoffs.

Martha Stewart’s pet peacocks eaten by coyotes

Martha Stewart mourned the loss of six peacocks savagely killed by a marauding group of coyotes that has been hanging around her Connecticut compound, the TV personality and businesswoman said Saturday in a sad social media post.

“RIP beautiful BlueBoy,” Stewart wrote on Instagram. “The coyotes came in broad daylight and devoured him and five others, including the magnificent White Boy.”

Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection warns that coyotes are common throughout the state, and advises homeowners to be wary of attacks, listing several “Tips on Preventing Conflicts with Coyotes” on its website that include never allowing pets to run free, especially at night.

Stewart has been long known to own a number of peacocks and other animals on her property.

“Any solutions for getting rid of six large and aggressive coyotes who have expensive tastes when it comes to poultry?” Stewart posted. “We are no longer allowing the peafowl out of their yard. We are enclosing the top of their large yard with wire fencing etc.”

Doctor Strange 2 Reveals New Best Look at Patrick Stewart’s X-Men Hero In Wheelchair

As Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness comes over the horizon towards its release date, the anticipation begins to build to a fever pitch. New advertising has shown off fresh moments from Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff while other reports have teased once again how this movie will connect to other projects in theaters and on Disney+. And of course, even that still leaves a Patrick Stewart-shaped elephant in the room to address.

Ever since Marvel Studios delivered the Super Bowl trailer for Doctor Strange 2, Patrick Stewart’s Professor X has been one of the most consistent conversation topics in regard to this movie’s impact on the MCU. Stewart has even commented on the footage a couple of times, even denying having seen it at all at first, although he expressed his thrill to be back in a new version of the role with Marvel Studios.

With the leading X-Men figure being such a major reveal within this incredible story, Marvel has waited to share a full look at what Stewart will look like in his return, and for good reason at that. Now, while his full imagery is still being kept under wraps, a recent theatrical moment gave fans the best look yet at this iconic hero.

New Look at Patrick Stewart in Doctor Strange 2

The GCV YouTube channel shared an expanded look at a TV spot for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, including a new look at Patrick Stewart’s Professor X.

Marvel Studios

This comes from a theater with the ScreenX format, which expands the shot on either side of the core movie.

Specifically, this shot provides the best look yet at Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier in his first appearance within the MCU.

The entire back of his head is shown through the expanded screens, although he still looks blurry in the shot. Fans can also now see the headpiece of what appears to be a yellow wheelchair in which he’s sitting.

Marvel Studios

In the comics, Professor X is often seen riding in a yellow hoverchair, which is a color and design that hasn’t been fully adapted through Marvel’s X-Men movies from 20th Century Fox. Below is an image of the chair from X-Men #4 (1991):

Doctor Strange Trailer Shows Full Wheelchair

While Professor X is unquestionably a powerful player in and of himself, he’s instantly recognizable thanks to the classic wheelchair and hoverchair he boasts in the comics and the movies. Now that fans can see the back of that chair in this new trailer, it only serves to push the excitement for his return to even higher levels.

Marvel Studios has made it more of a point than ever to bring comic accurate imagery into the MCU during Phase 4. Most recently, this was seen with Peter Parker’s new suit in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the Hawaiian shirt for Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin in Hawkeye, and even Falligar the Behemoth in the newly released trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder.

This imagery in the new trailer could prove that Marvel is bringing that same comic accuracy once again with a character fans have wanted in the MCU for a long time.

Of course, this is the closest thing anybody will get to a full look at Stewart’s Professor X until the movie fully debuts. Marvel Studios and its team are doing everything in their power to avoid discussing the subject, and after everything that came in No Way Home, this movie could top even that threequel with its surprising reveals.

LeBron James ejected: A strike to Pistons’ Isaiah Stewart’s face leads to scuffle

The ejection is only the second in James’ career — the first coming in 2017 for comments made to a referee.

Sunday’s altercation occurred with 9:18 remaining in the third quarter and the Lakers trailing 78-66 in Detroit. As a free throw was being attempted, James swung his arm backward while boxing out for a rebound, hitting Stewart.

The foul led to a prolonged game stoppage while Stewart, with blood coming down his face, had to be held back by Detroit coaches and players as he tried to confront James on several occasions. Stewart was also ejected from the game.

The Lakers would go on to win 121-116.

Both James and Stewart did not speak to the media postgame. CNN has reached out to the National Basketball Association (NBA) and Lakers for comment.

Lakers teammate Anthony Davis came to the defense of James after the game, saying that James isn’t a “dirty guy” and that he wasn’t sure why Stewart reacted the way he did.

“I’ve never, in 10 years, seen a player try to do that as long as I’ve been playing, at least in basketball. It’s uncalled for. You got a cut above your eye, accidental — like, it wasn’t on purpose. And we weren’t going to allow him to keep charging our brother like that,” Davis said.

Lakers head coach Frank Vogel said he spoke to James in the locker room after the game.

“Yeah, that’s really something that should stay in the locker room,” Vogel said. “I mean, I talked to him, yup, but I’m not going to disclose what his message was.”

Stewart was “upset,” Pistons coach Dwane Casey said after the game.

“I told him, ‘Don’t let this define who you are. It doesn’t define your game whatsoever.’ I felt for the young man because he’s such a competitor and he plays so hard. He’s a great kid but he felt like he got cheap-shotted across his brow and on the street, it would be a different story,” Casey said.

Kristen Stewart’s Princess Diana biopic to screen at Venice film festival | Film

The story of Diana, Princess of Wales’s agonies over divorcing Prince Charles will do battle with an adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s The Lost Daughter and The Power of the Dog, Jane Campion’s long-awaited return to the big screen, for the Golden Lion at the Venice film festival.

The lineup for the 2021 event in September was announced on Monday by artistic director Alberto Barbera, which, like last year’s edition at the height of the pandemic, will be a primarily in-person event. It will closely follow Cannes, which staged a physical festival earlier this month, having been forced to delay from its traditional slot in mid-May.

Diana’s marital problems is the focus of Spencer, the drama starring Kristen Stewart and set during a Christmas weekend at Sandringham. It is directed by Pablo Larraín, the Chilean film-maker who won multiple plaudits for Jackie, the 2016 biopic of Jacqueline Onassis starring Natalie Portman. The Lost Daughter is adapted from Ferrante’s 2006 novel about a college professor whose childhood trauma is unlocked when she meets a younger mother and daughter on a beach; it stars Olivia Colman and is the directorial debut of actor Maggie Gyllenhaal. The Power of the Dog is Campion’s first completed feature film for 12 years, since 2009’s Bright Star; it is an adaptation of the 1967 novel by Thomas Savage and stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst.

In competing for the festival’s top prize, they will join Pedro Almodóvar’s new film Parallel Mothers, starring his regular collaborator Penélope Cruz, which was previously announced as the festival’s opening gala. Other strong names in the competition lineup include Paolo Sorrentino, with a loosely autobiographical drama called The Hand of God, gambling drama The Card Counter from Paul Schrader and New Orleans-set Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon from Ana Lily Amirpour.

Venice will also see screenings of high-profile international films that aren’t in competition for the Golden Lion; these include the world premieres of the big budget adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune, starring Timothée Chalamet and Rebecca Ferguson and directed by Denis Villeneuve, and Halloween Kills, the 12th in the long-running horror franchise, starring Jamie Lee Curtis (who is being awarded a lifetime achievement Golden Lion). Adding to the star power on the Venice Lido will be showings of The Last Duel, the medieval set chivalric romance directed by Ridley Scott, and Edgar Wright’s much anticipated horror-thriller Last Night in Soho, starring Anya Taylor-Joy. Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac star in a screening of HBO TV series Scenes from a Marriage, a remake of the Ingmar Bergman miniseries from 1973, while Ruth Wilson is the lead in True Things, the second feature from UK director Harry Wootliff.

The Venice film festival is due to open on 1 September, and run until 11 September.
