CDC investigating multistate outbreak of norovirus stemming from raw Texas oysters
Eight states are among those impacted by an outbreak of norovirus linked to raw oysters from Texas, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Along with the Lone Star state, others include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina and Tennessee.
The CDC has clarified that it does not want restaurants and food retailers to serve raw oysters that came from harvest area TX 1, Galveston Bay, Texas, between November 17 and December 7.
The CDC said 211 illnesses have been reported as of December 15.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed that the raw oysters harvested in Galveston are potentially contaminated with norovirus.
The CDC advised that anyone that purchased the raw oysters should immediately throw them in the garbage or send them back to the distributor for destruction. The CDC also warned that any surfaces that came into contact with the oysters should be washed and sanitized.
Even though norovirus is sometimes referred to as a stomach bug or stomach flu, it is very contagious and can cause diarrhea and vomiting.

Norovirus can be contracted through direct contact with the infected, consuming contaminated food or water or touching contaminated surfaces and then putting your hands in your mouth.

Symptoms of norovirus can develop within 12-48 hours of exposure, according to the CDC.
Risk of dehydration is also prevalent with norovirus.
Tyrod Taylor sues Chargers team doctor for medical malpractice stemming from punctured lung suffered in 2020
Giants backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor is suing Chargers team doctor David S. Gazzaniga and the Newport Orthopedic Institute for medical malpractice stemming from a punctured lung Taylor suffered during his time with the Chargers, according to findings by ESPN. The punctured lung occurred while being treated for a rib injury in 2020. Taylor is seeking at least $5 million.
Originally scheduled for November, the trial is now slated to start in April because of the NFL schedule. The lawsuit was filed back in May of 2021.
Taylor suffered a punctured lung ahead of the Chargers’ Week 2 game against the chiefs when Gazzaniga tried to administer a pain-killing injection into Taylor’s fractured ribs. Taylor, who had led the Chargers to a season-opening win over the Bengals, said in the lawsuit that he suffered “severe physical pain resulting in hospitalization, physical therapy, emotional distress and other past pain in suffering.”
Taylor’s attorneys stated that Gazzaniga’s “negligence, carelessness and other tortious, unlawful and wrong acts” led Taylor to losing his starting job to then-rookie quarterback Justin Herbert, who started the Chargers’ remaining 15 games of the 2020 season. Herbert won Offensive Rookie of the Year honors as the Chargers finished the year with a 7-9 record.
The 2020 season was the second and final year for Taylor in Los Angeles. He spent the 2021 season in Houston, where he made six starts before injuries and the emergence of Davis Mills led to him spending the majority of the season on the sideline. He signed with the Giants this offseason and is currently serving as Daniels Jones’ backup.

U.S. VP touts $3.2 bln investment aimed at stemming Central America migration
LOS ANGELES/WASHINGTON, June 7 (Reuters) – U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has pooled $3.2 billion in corporate pledges aimed at addressing some of the economic factors driving migration from Central America, her office said on Tuesday, lending impetus to measures to be discussed at the Summit of the Americas this week.
The new commitments from companies, including Visa Inc (V.N) and the apparel company Gap Inc (GPS.N), exceed $1.9 billion, adding to $1.2 billion made in December. read more The latest round of corporate investments announced by Harris are intended to create jobs, expand access to the internet and bring more people into the formal banking system.
The pledges form a major part of President Joe Biden’s plan to address “root causes” of migration from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, a region known as the Northern Triangle. Curbing irregular migration is a top priority for Biden at a time when record numbers of people are trying to enter the United States at the Mexican border.

Biden, who travels to Los Angeles on Wednesday for the U.S.-hosted summit, will also promote a new economic plan for the Western Hemisphere building on existing trade agreements, U.S. officials said. read more
Even as he grapples with pressing concerns such as mass shootings, high inflation and the Ukraine war, the Democratic president wants to use the summit to repair Latin America relations damaged under his Republican predecessor, Donald Trump, and to counter China’s growing influence in the region.
But the administration’s decision to exclude Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua, which prompted Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to stay away, has threatened to overshadow Biden’s agenda. read more

Further complicating matters, the presidents of Guatemala and Honduras have signaled they will not attend the summit and will instead send other officials. At least 6,000 people, according to Reuters witnesses, left the city of Tapachula, near Mexico’s border with Guatemala.
CORPORATE PLEDGES
The latest corporate pledges includes $270 million from Visa focused on bringing 6.5 million people into the formal banking system, and a $150 million pledge from Gap to increase materials sourced from the region.
The other firms span a variety of sectors, including auto-parts, agriculture, telecommunications and digital services.
A CEO summit running parallel to the leaders’ gathering could yield commitments for further investment in economically troubled Latin America, which has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and is struggling to recover.
Harris also announced an initiative with the private sector that aims to connect 1.4 million women to the financial system and train more than 500,000 women and girls in job skills.
Additionally, Harris unveiled a $50 million project called the Central American Service Corps designed to give young people in the Northern Triangle paid community service opportunities in areas such as education and violence prevention.
Despite friction over summit invitations, most leaders in the Americas plan to attend. White House officials insist the controversy will blow over and the event – the first hosted by the United States since the first such gathering in 1994 – will be a success.
But before heading to the summit, Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, in a newspaper op-ed, accused the United States of being “inconsistent, if not contradictory” for refusing to invite Communist-ruled Cuba and leftist-led Venezuela and Nicaragua while engaging with non-democratic governments in other regions such as Southeast Asia. read more

James Franco reaches settlement in sexual misconduct suit stemming from the acting school he founded
Attorneys for the plaintiffs in the case against James Franco announced they have reached a tentative settlement over allegations that the actor intimidated students at his acting and film school into sexual situations.
The two sides filed a joint status report in Los Angeles Superior Court telling a judge a settlement had been reached in the class-action lawsuit brought by former students at the Franco-founded Studio 4, which went defunct in 2017. Elements of the lawsuit may live on, though.
The document was filed on Feb. 11, but the settlement has not previously been reported.
Actresses and ex-students Sarah Tither-Kaplan and Toni Gaal, who first filed the lawsuit in 2019, have agreed to drop their individual claims under the agreement, according to the court filing. Their lawsuit said Franco pushed his students into performing in increasingly explicit sex scenes on camera in an “orgy type setting” that went far beyond those acceptable on Hollywood film sets.

It alleged that Franco “sought to create a pipeline of young women who were subjected to his personal and professional sexual exploitation in the name of education,” and that students were led to believe roles in Franco’s films would be available to those who went along.

The lawsuit said the incidents occurred in a master class on sex scenes that Franco taught at Studio 4, which opened in 2014.
The two sides had been in discussions on a settlement for several months, and the lawsuit’s progress had been paused while they talked.
Plaintiffs’ attorneys from the firm of Valli Kane & Vagnini, LLP, confirmed the agreement in a statement to The Associated Press on Saturday night, adding that it will be “further memorialized in a Joint Stipulation of Settlement to be filed with the Court at a later date,” but giving no further comment or details.
Representatives for Franco did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.
In a previous court filing, Franco’s attorneys, while praising the #MeToo movement that helped inspire the lawsuit, called its claims “false and inflammatory, legally baseless and brought as a class action with the obvious goal of grabbing as much publicity as possible for attention-hungry Plaintiffs.” They pointed out that Tither-Kaplan had previously expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with Franco.

The lawsuit also names Franco’s production company Rabbit Bandini and his partners including Vince Jolivette and Jay Davis as defendants.
The sexual exploitation allegations of other plaintiffs in the class action will be dismissed without prejudice, meaning they may be re-filed, the joint status report said.
Fraud allegations brought by those plaintiffs will be “subjected to limited release,” the document says, without further details or explanation.

Before filing the lawsuit, Tither-Kaplan aired her allegations of sexual misconduct against Franco along with other women in the Los Angeles Times after Franco won a Golden Globe Award for “The Disaster Artist” in early 2018, when the wave of the #MeToo movement was sweeping across Hollywood.

In a subsequent interview on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” Franco called the sexual misconduct stories about him inaccurate, but said, “If I’ve done something wrong, I will fix it. I have to.”

Franco, 42, best known for starring in comedies with Seth Rogen, has generally kept a low-profile since the allegations arose in what had been a highly productive period that culminated in the acclaimed “Disaster Artist.”

Chiefs’ Britt Reid ‘doing better’ after surgery stemming from crash that seriously hurt girl, Andy Reid says
Kansas City Chiefs’ outside linebackers coach Britt Reid is “doing better” after undergoing surgery due to an injury suffered in a crash last week that left a 5-year-old seriously hurt, Andy Reid said Monday.
Andy Reid, the father of Britt Reid, was asked about his son again Monday in his post-Super Bowl press conference. The multicar crash left two children hurt.

“That little girl, my heart goes out to her,” Andy Reid said, via KSHB-TV.
He added that his son was “doing better now.”
“I’ve had a chance to talk to him. Again, my heart goes out to that young lady. I’m also a dad, so I get that. I have concerns obviously on both sides,” he said.
Tiffany Verhulst, who set up the GoFundMe donation page, gave a brief update about Ariel’s condition Sunday.
“Ariel remains in the hospital in critical condition and is not awake,” she wrote. “No progress updates as of right now. Thank you to everyone who has donated to support the family through this hard time, we are so grateful.”
Britt Reid, 35, was under investigation for driving impaired in Kansas City, Mo. after police say he was involved in a multi-car crash near Arrowhead Stadium, FOX4 KC reported. Reid reportedly told officers he had 2 to 3 drinks and was on an Adderall prescription at the time of the incident.

The station obtained police documents that matched the details of the crash. The documents say that Reid told police he was driving a pickup truck involved in the crash and told an officer he had between two and three drinks and was on a prescription for Adderall. The station reported that no names were identified in the police report.
The crash took place near the southbound ramp of I-435, according to FOX4 KC. A driver in a Chevrolet Impala ran out of gas and on the ramp called for help, police said. The police report stated the hazard lights were flashing, but the car’s battery was starting to die when a family arrived in a Chevrolet Traverse and parked near them with their headlights on.
The station reported, citing the crash documents, that a white Dodge pickup truck was traveling south on the ramp to get to the interstate when the driver struck the Impala and hit the Traverse from behind.
The Impala driver was inside the car at the time of the crash and was not hurt and two adults in the Traverse were not hurt either, according to the station.
Another child suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
