Winter ice storm: Millions across the South and central US brace as officials urge staying off roads

A winter storm bringing the triple threat of ice, sleet and snow Tuesday to parts of the South and central US has prompted officials to close roads and schools as they urge people to avoid traveling in dangerous conditions.
About 38 million people from Texas and Oklahoma to as far east as Kentucky and West Virginia are under various forms of winter weather alerts, including those warning of dangerous ice accumulations forecast to make roads a nightmare.
“In addition to potentially hazardous travel conditions, this amount of ice will lead to tree damage and power outages across the hardest-hit regions,” the National Weather Service warned in its forecast Monday.
In Texas, residents in cities including Dallas, San Antonio and Austin can expect icy roads as well as some sleet Tuesday, when heavy rain and flash flooding are also possible in the eastern parts of the state.
Amid such conditions, the governor has requested the state’s emergency management division to increase its resources so it can be ready to respond through Thursday.
The storm has also led several school districts in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and Austin to close Tuesday, and more than 400 flights departing from Texas airports have been cancelled. Multiple roadways in Texas have been shut down due to ice accumulation, according to the state’s transportation department.
As ice began forming on roads in Little Rock, Arkansas, the governor declared a state of emergency Monday and activated the winter weather support teams of the state’s National Guard to be prepared in helping police in their response to the storm.
“I encourage Arkansans who are experiencing winter weather to avoid travel if possible and heed the warnings of local officials,” Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders said on Twitter.
The emergency order directs $250,000 toward discretionary use by the head of the state’s Division of Emergency Management to provide funding for program and administrative costs, the order stated.
“The real enemy is going to be that ice,” said Dave Parker, a spokesperson for the Arkansas Department of Transportation. “This could potentially be a pretty dangerous situation.”
Parker added that majority of the state is expected to be impacted, and the state is treating most major roads.
By late Monday, ice had already spread across grounds in Memphis, Tennessee, and Louisville, Kentucky, as well as Texas, where at least a few car crashes were reported in Austin with no injuries.
The storm is poised to produce a mix of wintry precipitation ranging from rain and sleet to ice and it will hit areas in the southern and central regions in waves through Wednesday.
And while the forecast shows there will be periods of reprieve over the next two days, roads will likely remain dangerously slick throughout the storm as temperatures remain low.
Indeed, Tuesday is expected to be the toughest day for driving as Texas bridges and roads become icy, according to the weather service’s Fort Worth office.
“More widespread freezing rain/sleet is expected Tuesday and Wednesday morning, with worsening travel impacts during this time,” the local weather agency said.
Significant icing of about half of an inch is expected on roads in Austin, San Angelo and Dallas while San Antonio may see up to a tenth of an inch of ice.
Meantime, Texas’ primary electricity provider, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, told CNN it will be able to meet residents’ demand as temperatures plummet.
“We expect sufficient generation to meet forecasted demand and are continuing to monitor forecasts, this week. We are not asking for Conservation at this time. We are informing the public that IF they are experience an outage to reach out to their local power provider,” the agency said in an email.
Elsewhere in the South, up to a half of an inch of ice could glaze roads in Memphis, Tennessee. In the state’s Dyer County, icy conditions led officials to shut down the I-155 bridge, according to the highway patrol.
Meanwhile, Little Rock in Arkansas is forecast to see multiple rounds of ice that could amass up to half an inch.
In neighboring Oklahoma, residents in Oklahoma City are under a winter weather advisory through Wednesday afternoon, with the expectation of seeing up to two tenths of an inch of ice.
Icing up to two-tenths of an inch could be seen in Louisville, Kentucky, while Charleston, West Virginia, can see sleet up to an inch and ice up to a tenth of an inch.
Dan Quinn tells teams he’s staying as Cowboys defensive coordinator, not seeking head coaching jobs
Perhaps the biggest domino of the Dallas Cowboys’ offseason dropped Thursday afternoon.
Defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, after interviewing for three head coach openings, will return to Dallas for a third season, head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed to Dallas reporters.
“We’re all extremely excited to have Dan back,” McCarthy said, per ESPN’s Todd Archer. “Had a chance to visit with him a short while ago. This is big for us. Gives us continuity. Definitely what we’ve accomplished the last two years, building off of that.
“Frankly, on a personal note, I can’t tell you how thankful I am.”
Quinn had interviewed for the Denver Broncos, Arizona Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts’ head coaching vacancies. The Cowboys sought his return, though NFL teams cannot block moves to another franchise that qualify as a promotion.
McCarthy credited staff and player relationships as reasons he thinks Quinn chose to return to the Cowboys before the positions were filled. Dallas’ progress, relative to the state of franchises with whom he interviewed, may have factored in as well.
Quinn’s next opportunity will be his second as head coach after he led the Falcons from 2015 until midway through 2020, advancing in the 2016 season to the Super Bowl.
“He understands at this point of his life how hard it is to win a Super Bowl,” McCarthy said of Quinn. “So I think all of those things play into that. I think clearly Dan is in a position to be selective. And I’m extremely excited about the decision.”
Quinn spearheaded a Cowboys defense that led the league in takeaways for consecutive seasons, the first unit to retain that crown since the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1970s.
The Cowboys ranked fifth in points allowed in 2021, Quinn’s inaugural season, after ranking seventh in 2020. Compare that with the last year before Quinn arrived, when Dallas’ 2019 unit ranked 28th.
Quinn has overseen the breakout of players including two-time All-Pro Micah Parsons, whom Quinn has creatively schemed as an off-ball linebacker and now increasingly at edge rusher. He has encouraged versatility from his defensive backs, too, including veteran safety Jayron Kearse, who has matched up on tight ends akin to a linebacker.
“Part of the player I am now is because of coach Quinn giving me the opportunity,” Kearse said earlier this month. “There’s not anything he thinks I can’t do, not anything he won’t do to put me in positions to go out there and play at a high level.
“One of those coaches who guys in this locker room would run through a wall for. … He’s been heaven-sent for me.”
In their divisional-round loss to the San Francisco 49ers, the Cowboys defense held the 49ers to just 19 points. Quarterback Brock Purdy said this week Dallas had “one of the best defenses” the 49ers had seen this year.
McCarthy said Thursday that Cowboys team owner Jerry Jones told him this week he hoped McCarthy could coach as long as franchise legend Tom Landry.
McCarthy declined to give the same vote of confidence to offensive coordinator Kellen Moore when asked.
But one major coaching decision appears to be set. And the Cowboys’ defensive players will undoubtedly celebrate it.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Kanye and Kim agreed on joint custody with “equal access” to their four children: daughters North and Chicago, and sons Saint and Psalm. When news broke of the wedding, Kim took to Instagram on January 13, 2022, to post a cryptic quote. “I’m in my quiet girl era, I don’t have much to say. Just much to do,” the now-deleted Instagram story read. She also posted two more Instagram quotes. “Just remember, the black sheep usually turns into the goat. Keep doing you,” one quote read. The second post read: “People who want to see you win, will help you win. Remember that.”
So, who exactly is Bianca Censori? Bianca Censori is an architectural designer for Ye’s brand Yeezy. She’s worked with the brand for several years since 2020 and was promoted to head designer. Censori was recently spotted with Kanye on several occasions days before the wedding.
According to TMZ, Ye was wearing a wedding ring on the week of January 13, 2023, when he and Bianca arrived at the Waldorf Astoria in Beverly Hills, California. Sources told the tabloid site that the ring symbolizes his commitment to her following the ceremony.
The “wedding” seemed to be confirmed by friends of the couple. “Kanye and Bianca did have a small marriage ceremony, friends don’t know if it’s legal, but it’s very real to them,” a source told Us Weekly. According to sites like Daily Mail and on social media, there have been notable similarities between her and Kanye’s ex Kim Kardashian. “Bianca Censori looks like a face mash of Kim Kardashian and Lourdes Leon. That’s all I’mma say about that,” one person tweeted.
Ye also wrote a song directly referencing his employee. The track “Censori Overload,” which has also been called “Someday We’ll All Be Free,” doesn’t include lines referencing the architect, there are a few lines that reference marriage. “Wakin’ up to ‘I can’t do this anymore’ texts/And the Bible said I can’t have any more sex ’til marriage.”
Kanye was also previously linked to Julia Fox and dated Chaney Jones in 2022. According to sources to Page Six, Ye and Chaney’s relationship ended after a vacation to Tokyo after it became “choppy”. Sources acknowledged Ye’s erratic behavior of his social media antics, telling the site, “You know how things are. Tomorrow they might be posted together again.”
The “Heartless” rapper was under major controversy in the latter half of 2022 after designing a “White Lives Matter” t-shirt and posting antisemitic social media posts. In a deleted tweet uncovered by CNN, Kanye tweeted on Saturday, October 8, 2022, “going death con 3 [sic] On JEWISH PEOPLE,” and also, “You guys have toyed with me and tried to black ball anyone whoever opposes your agenda.”
On his behavior, Kim went on to the Angie Martinez IRL podcast to reveal how she shields it away from her kids. “I definitely protected him, and I still will in the eyes of my kids. For my kids. So, in my home, my kids don’t know anything that goes on [in] the outside world,” she explained and confirmed that she was “holding on by a thread.” The Skims founder continued, “I know that I am so close to that not happening, but while it is still that way, I will protect that to the end of the Earth as long as I can. My kids don’t know anything. So, at school, some of my best friends are the teachers so I know what goes on at recess and lunch time. I hear what is being talked about.”
She also stated that protecting her children was a “full time job,” and opened up about her mental health. “But at the same time in my home I could be going through something, but if we are riding to school and they want to listen to their dad’s music — no matter what we are going through — I have to have that smile on my face and blast his music and sing along with my kids,” she said. “[I can] act like nothing is wrong and as soon as I drop them off, I can have a good cry.”
