Cincinnati Bengals vs Kansas City Chiefs summary: score, stats, highlights | AFC Championship

The Kansas City Chiefs are headed to their third Super Bowl in the last four years after defeating the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship on Sunday night. Harrison Butker hit a game winning 45 yard field goal to seal the 23-20 win from Arrowhead Stadium.

Mahomes shakes off ankle injury

All of the talk coming into the Championship Round surrounded the status of Patrick Mahomes’ high ankle sprain he suffered last week against the Jacksonville Jaguars. From the first series, the Kansas City quarterback looked mobile, but maybe not as agile as we are used to seeing him on a weekly basis. There were a few moments of discomfort throughout the game for the KC QB, but when it counted the most Mahomes took care of buisness with his legs.

It was supposed to be a matchup between two high flying teams that have grown quite familiar with each other over the last few years. The Bengals have had the Chiefs numbers in recent history, but that wasn’t the case in the AFC Title game from Arrowhead.

The high octane shootout we all expected got off to a slow start as the KC defense pressured Cincy QB Joe Burrow from the first possession onwards. They had four first half sacks, and made it difficult for the Bengals gunslinger to feel comfortable in the pocket.

Slow start for high powered offenses

Despite the defensive dominance, Mahomes and the offense struggled to punch the ball in the end zone, settling for two field goals in their opening two possessions. Cincinnati added a field goal to the score board, and it wasn’t until late in the first half that the Chiefs found the end zone for the first time. On 4th and 1, the Chiefs decided to let Mahomes make a play on a roll out and he hit Travis Kelce for a 14 yard TD to take a 13-3 lead with under four minutes to go in the second quarter.

A late Evan McPherson field goal to close the half cut the lead to a touchdown, and Bengals offense finally turned on coming out of halftime. Burrow drove the Bengals down the field and hit Tee Higgins for a 27 yard TD to tie the game up at 13-13.

Kansas City would not take too long to respond. They punched back on the next possession as Mahomes led an 11 play, 77 yard drive that ended with a 19 yard dart over the middle to Marquez Valdes-Scantling for the go ahead touchdown. After forcing  Cincy into a three and out, the Chiefs were driving down field again, but Mahomes made a rare mistake when the ball slipped out of his hands on a pass to the flat and the fumble was recovered by Sam Hubbard.

Six plays later the Bengals would tie up the game with a Samaje Perine TD run from two yards out in the early stages of the fourth quarter.

Butker with the game winner

Punts from the Chiefs and the second interception of Burrow’s nights the stage for Mahomes to steal the show late in the fourth quarter. With 30 seconds left on the clock, KC took over from their 47 yard line after a fantastic punt return from Skyy Moore. Joseph Ossai helped the Kansas City cause when Mahomes went scrambling on a 3rd and 4 from around midfield, picked up the first down, and then was hit late by the Bengals defender. The penalty moved the Chiefs into field goal position and Butker drilled the game winner from 45 yards out with three seconds on the clock.

Mahomes didn’t look perfect, but on a night where he couldn’t rely on his mobility in the pocket he still went for 326 yards and three TDs on 29/43 passing, while Burrow went 26/41 with 270 yards, a TD and threw two interceptions.

The Chiefs are back in the Super Bowl for the third time in four years and are set for a showdown in the desert against the Philadelphia Eagles from Glendale, Arizona in two weeks time.

Bills vs. Bengals score: Live updates, game stats, highlights, analysis for 2023 NFL playoffs

The Bengals and Bills have one half of their divisional round playoff showdown in the books. Through two quarters, Cincinnati has held control of this game in snowy Buffalo thanks to a gangbusters start out of the gate.

Joe Burrow led back-to-back touchdown drives to begin the game, while the Bengals defense held the Bills offense to consecutive three-and-outs that gave Zac Taylor’s team a 14-point cushion at the end of the first quarter. Josh Allen and company were able to get into a rhythm on their third possession of the day as the quarterback finished off the 13-play drive with a goal-line touchdown. However, Cincinnati answered by driving down the field to kick a field goal to extend the lead back to double-digits before the break.

The winner of this matchup will meet the Kansas City Chiefs at the AFC Championship game, but the location of that game will be determined by the results of this head-to-head. If the Bengals pull off the upset, that game will be held at Arrowhead Stadium. However, if the Bills win, the conference title game will be played on a neutral field at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

So, will the Bengals hang onto the lead? Or does Buffalo have a second-half comeback in them? We’re about to find out. As this game continues to unfold be sure to check out our live blog of Sunday’s head-to-head. Below, you’ll get expert analysis and real-time highlights of all the top plays.

Eagles vs. Giants score: Live updates, game stats, highlights, analysis for 2023 NFL playoff divisional game

PHILADELPHIA — A statement has been made by the Philadelphia Eagles in this first half as they jumped out to a 28-0 lead over the New York Giants, as Philadelphia has dominated through the air and on the ground. Jalen Hurts started 7 of 7 for 89 yards as the Eagles built a 14-0 lead after the first quarter, finding Dallas Goedert and DeVonta Smith on touchdown passes to give Philadelphia a commanding lead.

The Giants have just 64 yards at halftime as Daniel Jones has thrown an interception and has been hit five times. Haason Reddick has two sacks for the Eagles in the first half, tying the franchise record for most sacks in a playoff game. James Bradberry has the interception for the Eagles, the first by an Eagles cornerback since Week 9.

Boston Scott scored a touchdown for the Eagles in the second quarter to put them up 21-0, his 11th touchdown in nine career games against the Giants. Scott has 19 career touchdowns, living up to his “Giant Killer” reputation. Hurts had a rushing touchdown to cap off the dominant first half, as he finished 12 of 17 for 118 yards with two touchdowns and zero interceptions (129.0 rating). Hurts also has seven carries for 31 yards and a score.

NFL Rumors: Brock Purdy Expected to Be 49ers’ Starting QB in 2023 Over Trey Lance | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors

Ezra Shaw/Getty Images

After spending his rookie season as the San Francisco 49ers’ backup quarterback, Trey Lance could find himself in a similar role in 2023.

Per Michael Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle, two people with knowledge of the 49ers’ plans confirmed Brock Purdy is expected to be the starting quarterback over Lance next season.

Lance was San Francisco’s starter coming into 2022, but a fractured ankle suffered in a Week 2 win over the Seattle Seahawks ended his season. He had a follow-up surgery in December to remove some of the stabilizing hardware in his ankle that was irritating a tendon.

He is expected to make a full recovery and be ready to go when the 49ers begin organized team activities in the spring.

Purdy, who was the final pick in the 2022 NFL draft, became the backup quarterback behind Jimmy Garoppolo after Lance went down. The 23-year-old made the roster out of training camp after beating out Nate Sudfeld for the No. 3 quarterback spot.

After playing a handful of snaps in a few blowout games early in the season, Purdy was thrust into action when Garoppolo suffered a broken foot in Week 13 against the Miami Dolphins. He responded by playing remarkably well with 1,098 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and a 68.6 percent completion rate in five starts to finish the regular season.

In San Francisco’s playoff opener against the Seattle Seahawks, Purdy overcame a shaky start to finish 18-of-30 for 332 yards and four total touchdowns in a 41-23 victory at Levi’s Stadium.

The 49ers have scored at least 37 points in each of their last four games.

While the jury is far from being decided on Lance, the 49ers did pay a steep price to select him in the 2021 NFL draft. They traded four picks to the Dolphins, including first-rounders in 2022 and 2023, to get the No. 3 selection for Lance.

Lance has been an unfortunate victim of bad luck. The 22-year-old hasn’t played consistently since the 2019 season at North Dakota State. He only played one game in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 49ers drafted Lance with the idea of having him sit behind Garoppolo for one year before taking over as the starter. He did make two starts as a rookie when Garoppolo was injured.

It’s hard to argue Purdy shouldn’t be the starter based on his and the team’s success. Lance could still be given the chance to compete for the job in training camp and the preseason, or the 49ers could try to recoup some draft picks if they decide to explore trade opportunities for the young signal-caller.
