Monkeypox statistics: Tracking the outbreak in NYC and beyond

Welcome to Gothamist’s monkeypox statistics page!

  • New York City’s health department is identifying between 60 and 70 new cases each day. Authorities say there are likely many more cases that haven’t been caught by testing.
  • New York State continues to lead the nation in monkeypox cases, with almost 2,300 cases reported by August 12th. The vast majority of those cases have been found in New York City, overwhelmingly in LGBTQ+ New Yorkers.
  • These charts will be expanded and improved as additional city, state and federal data becomes available.

In May of this year, New York City identified its first case of monkeypox, an infectious disease caused by the virus of the same name. Two months later, the region has become the epicenter of monkeypox in the United States, prompting city officials to declare the outbreak a public health emergency.

During this episode, the city has weathered vaccine shortages, technical hiccups with health websites and alleged retribution in the health department as it adds yet another public health threat to its already overloaded plate. Because the current outbreak has mainly affected LGBTQ+ New Yorkers, it’s exposing preexisting gaps in the health care system that often serves this community. The virus may also be reshaping the definition of a sexually transmitted infection.

The good news is that city, state and federal governments have all started sharing some form of monkeypox data. We’ll compile the most useful datasets here to help you keep track of the outbreak and stay safe.

The charts, tables and maps on this page refresh with the latest data daily or weekly. We update the article’s text about once a week. The last text update happened on August 16th.

New York City has prioritized communities currently at higher risk for the virus in its rollout of the JYNNEOS vaccine for monkeypox, which is in extremely short supply.

The eligible people must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Gay, bisexual, or other man who has sex with men, and/or transgender, gender-nonconforming, or nonbinary
  • Age 18 or older
  • Have had multiple or anonymous sex partners in the last 14 days

Alternatively, they must be a close contact of a known monkeypox case.

Anyone can get monkeypox, but the current outbreak has overwhelmingly affected gay and bisexual men. The city has also recorded a handful of cases among transgender and nonbinary New Yorkers.

People in these communities are less likely than other New Yorkers to have a regular primary care provider, making it harder for them to get tested and treated for monkeypox.

Right now, New York has the most monkeypox cases of any state in the U.S., but California, Florida and other populous states are also contending with outbreaks. Every state except Wyoming has reported at least one positive test result.

COVID-19 Statistics | July 20, 2022 | Lost Coast Outpost

Humboldt County Public Health reported today the hospitalization of a resident 80 or older. No new deaths were reported. An additional 303 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 were announced as well as 127 new probable cases for the period between Tuesday, July 12, and Tuesday, July 19. The total number of confirmed cases in the county stands at 20,360. An additional 4,372 cases are reported as probable.* 

Local vaccination data has been updated on the COVID-19 Data Dashboard. Highlights include:

  • Since the last weekly report on July 13, an additional 80 residents completed their vaccine series.
  • A total of 90,777 individuals, or approximately 67% of the county’s total population, have been fully vaccinated as of Tuesday.

Test-to-Treat service continues to be available at the Wharfinger Building (1 Marina Way, Eureka). At Test-to-Treat locations, people are tested for COVID-19 and if a person tests positive, is 12 or older and treatments are deemed appropriate for them, Paxlovid antiviral medication will be administered at no charge. A registered nurse is onsite with a Telehealth link to a medical doctor in order to dispense medication, should the patient choose.

The service runs daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and is closed from 11 a.m. to noon and 4 to 5 p.m. Attendees should bring a list of their medications and be prepared to answer basic questions about their medical history.

OptumServe offers rapid antigen testing and PCR testing services at the Wharfinger, as well. Walk-in attendees will receive only rapid antigen testing unless the attendee specifically states they require a PCR test. Appointments for antigen testing can be made at lhi.care/covidtesting or by calling 888-634-1123. Wharfinger testing runs from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and is closed from 11 a.m. to noon and 4 to 5 p.m.

Vaccines remain readily available throughout Humboldt County and, as always, Humboldt’s vaccination and testing services are available free of charge. Walk-ins are welcome at all Public Health clinics and some pharmacy vaccination sites. Appointments can also be made at MyTurn.ca.gov.

Humboldt County Public Health reported six new hospitalizations today, two residents in their 70s and four aged 80 or older. An additional 306 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 were reported as well as 124 new probable cases for the period between Tuesday, May 10, and Tuesday, May 17. The total number of confirmed cases in the county stands at 18,078. An additional 3,304 cases are reported as probable.* 

Local vaccination data has been updated on the COVID-19 Data Dashboard. Highlights include:

  • Since the last weekly report on May 11, an additional 106 residents completed their vaccine series.
  • A total of 90,104 individuals, or approximately 66% of the county’s total population, have been fully vaccinated as of Tuesday.

As part of the federal government’s National COVID-19 Preparedness Plan, the nationwide Test to Treat Initiative has been launched, with one Humboldt location at the Wharfinger Building. At Test to Treat locations, people are tested for COVID-19 and if a person tests positive, is 12 or older and treatments are deemed appropriate for them, Paxlovid antiviral medication will be administered at no charge. A registered nurse is onsite with a Telehealth link to a medical doctor in order to dispense medication, should the patient choose.

Paxlovid was developed as an oral pill and created to help keep high-risk patients from getting sick enough to require hospitalization. The drug is intended for those with initial mild or moderate COVID-19 symptoms who are at risk of severe disease. This can include older people and those who are immunosuppressed or have conditions such as heart disease, cancer or diabetes.

The Wharfinger Building OptumServe testing location is now serving as Humboldt County’s first Test to Treat location, and the service runs daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 1 Marina Way in Eureka. The site is closed from 11 a.m. to noon and 5 to 6 p.m. A medical provider will be available to review patients’ current medications. Attendees should have a list of their medications with them.

OptumServe continues to offer rapid antigen testing and PCR testing services at the Wharfinger site. PCR tests are available only on a walk-in basis and must be specifically requested from the attendee. Walk-in attendees should receive only rapid antigen testing unless the attendee specifically states they require a PCR test. Appointments for antigen testing can be made at lhi.care/covidtesting or by calling 888-634-1123.

Vaccines will be available during this weekend’s Redwood Coast Kite Festival & Artisan Fair in Eureka at Halverson Park. Humboldt County Public Health will be joining a California Department of Public Health vaccine team to provide free first and second vaccine shots as well as boosters for attendees during the event on Saturday, May 21, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. 

Additionally, vaccines remain readily available throughout Humboldt County and, as always, Humboldt’s vaccination and testing services are available free of charge. Walk-ins are welcome at all Public Health clinics and some pharmacy vaccination sites. Appointments can also be made at MyTurn.ca.gov.

Second booster shots of Pfizer and Moderna are available at all Humboldt County Public Health vaccine clinics for those 50 and older, as well as certain immunocompromised individuals, as long as it has been four months since their first booster shot. Those interested in a second booster can also check with pharmacies about availability. Humboldt County Public Health reported today a new hospitalization of a resident aged 80 or older due to COVID-19. An additional 104 new positive cases of COVID-19 were also reported since Friday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the county to 19,596. No new deaths were reported and today marks the lowest number of new positive cases reported on a Monday since Dec. 20, at the beginning of the surge of the Omicron variant.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced today that the statewide indoor mask mandate for unvaccinated individuals ends after 11:59 p.m. Feb. 28, but health officials will continue to strongly recommend masks indoors regardless of vaccination status.

California is set to end its universal masking requirements in K-12 and childcare settings at 11:59 p.m. on March 11. State health officials said they will continue to strongly recommend masks be worn in schools and to promote masks and testing for children after the mandate is lifted. Masking will still be required in high-risk settings under the state health officer order, such as areas of public transit, health care, long-term care facilities, jails and prisons.

Humboldt County Public Health Director Sofia Pereira said, “We know masking reduces the spread of COVID-19 in our community and across the state. We join the state in strongly recommending wearing a mask indoors, regardless of your vaccination status.”

Beginning today, the Joint Information Center (JIC) will issue Case Count news releases and Data Dashboard updates three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Also starting today, the JIC Call Center will be open 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. and closed from noon to 1 p.m. for lunch. Additional scheduling reductions are planned.

Residents, particularly those who are unvaccinated, are urged to continue to take protective measures against COVID-19 by washing hands frequently, socially distancing, wearing a well-fitted mask and avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces.

CDPH continues to stress that COVID-19 vaccine is preventing severe illness, hospitalization, and death and urge Californians to get vaccinated and boosted as soon as possible. State health officials recommend that every vaccinated person 12 years or older get a booster as long as they received their second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine at least five months ago or they received their Johnson & Johnson vaccine at least two months ago.

Moderately to severely immunocompromised persons should get all doses in the vaccine series which is one more than someone who is not immunocompromised. They are also strongly recommended to get a booster three months after the third dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or two months after receiving the second dose of Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Individuals should stay home and away from others and get tested if they become sick or experience COVID-19 symptoms that may include fever, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue or muscle aches.

Vaccines remain readily available and, as always, Humboldt County’s vaccination and testing services are available free of charge. While walk-ins are allowed at all Public Health clinics and some pharmacy vaccination sites, appointments are recommended for all vaccinations and are the best way to ensure a shot is available during your visit. Appointments can be made at MyTurn.ca.gov.

Humboldt County Public Health reported today the death of a resident in their 60s due to COVID-19. Staff in the Department Operations Center extend their condolences to all who have lost a loved one to the virus.

Two new hospitalizations were reported, a resident in their 60s and another aged 80 or older. An additional 24 new positive cases were also reported, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the county to 19,458.

Starting Feb. 28, the Joint Information Center (JIC) will begin reporting Case Count news releases and Data Dashboard updates three times a week instead of five. Those will be issued Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with the goal of moving to once weekly updates as Humboldt County transitions from a pandemic to an endemic response.

A calculation error involving the total percentage of Humboldt County residents aged 5 and older who are fully vaccinated was identified by a caller to the Joint Information Center. This error has now been corrected. As of Tuesday, a total of 87,791 residents, or nearly 69% of the county’s population aged 5 and older, were fully vaccinated. Approximately 7% of the population aged 5 and older has been partially vaccinated as of this reporting period.

Humboldt County Public Health reported today the death of a resident in their 50s due to COVID-19. Staff in the Department Operations Center extend their condolences to all who have lost a loved one to the virus.

One new hospitalization, a resident in their 30s, was reported. Thirty-five new cases were also reported, and an additional 43 cases were removed from the case count. Because Public Health counts people and not tests, staff conduct ongoing manual de-duplication efforts to make sure a person who has received more than one test is being counted only once. The total number of confirmed positive cases of the virus in the county stands at 18,192.

Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday that he will let a statewide indoor mask mandate expire next week for people who have been vaccinated against COVID-19. Those who are unvaccinated must still wear masks indoors in public settings after the mandate ends Feb. 15. Fully vaccinated individuals are recommended to continue indoor masking in locations where the risk may be high.

Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Ian Hoffman said the county will align with the state and let the local indoor mask order expire at the same time.

After Feb. 15, mask requirements will revert back to the previous California Department of Public Health (CDPH) face covering guidance, which continues to require masks be worn by all individuals, regardless of vaccination status, in specific higher risk settings. Those include indoor locations in K-12 schools, childcare and health care settings, public transportation and transit hubs, correctional facilities, homeless shelters and long-term, adult and senior care settings. Workplaces will continue to follow the COVID-19 prevention standards set by CalOSHA.

Residents, particularly those who are unvaccinated, are urged to continue to take protective measures against COVID-19 by washing hands frequently, wearing a well-fitted mask approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), distancing six feet from others when possible and avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces.

CDPH recommends individuals stay home and away from others and get tested if they become sick or experience COVID-19 symptoms. These symptoms may include fever, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue or muscle aches and often mimic common cold or flu illnesses.

Vaccines remain readily available and, as always, Humboldt County’s vaccination and testing services are available free of charge. While walk-ins are allowed at all Public Health clinics and some pharmacy vaccination sites, appointments are recommended for all vaccinations and are the best way to ensure a shot is available during your visit. Appointments can be made at MyTurn.ca.gov.

Vaccines, including boosters, are available at local pharmacies. To check the availability of a specific vaccine, visit the vaccines.gov page, or text your ZIP code to 438829 to locate a nearby pharmacy offering vaccines.

Two new hospitalizations, a resident in their 60s and another aged 80 or older, were reported since Friday. An additional 336 new cases were also reported, bringing to 18,200 the total number of confirmed positive cases of the virus locally.

Residents, including those who are unvaccinated, are urged to continue to take protective measures against COVID-19 by washing hands frequently, wearing a well-fitted mask approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), distancing six feet from others when possible and avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces. The state remains under a mandatory mask order in all indoor public spaces through Feb. 15.

Three new hospitalizations, two residents in their 60s, and another in their 70s, were reported. An additional 142 new cases were also reported, bringing to 17,864 the total number of confirmed positive cases of the virus locally.

Daily reported positive cases of COVID-19 have continued to fall below the peak of record-high numbers in January, but health officials caution that community transmission of the virus and confirmed cases remain high and an increase in hospitalizations tend to lag a few weeks after the peak.

Residents, including those who are unvaccinated, are encouraged to continue to take protective measures against COVID by washing hands frequently, wearing a well-fitted mask approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), distancing six feet from others when possible and avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces. The state remains under a mandatory mask order in all indoor public spaces through Feb. 15.

Since the last data update on Jan. 28, the county has recorded 1,055 new cases of COVID-19. Three new deaths were reported, one unvaccinated person and two fully vaccinated. Nine new hospitalizations due to COVID-19 were reported. Seven were unvaccinated and two were fully vaccinated. Age ranges of reported hospitalizations in the seven-day period are as follows:

  • 1 person in their 50s
  • 6 people in their 60s
  • 1 person in their 70s
  • 1 person aged 80 or older

The graphs below, which depict average weekly case rates and weekly hospitalizations and deaths in unvaccinated and fully vaccinated local residents, show that more severe outcomes from COVID-19 are higher among unvaccinated individuals.

As depicted in the graph above for the period between May 30, 2021, and Jan. 23, 2022, 17 deaths of fully vaccinated Humboldt County residents from COVID-19 were reported. The average age of those deaths was 79. During that same period, 52 deaths of unvaccinated residents were reported. The average age of those deaths was 67. During that same period, 65 fully vaccinated residents were hospitalized with an average age of 73. An additional 266 unvaccinated individuals were hospitalized with an average age of 58. The current seven-day average case rate in Humboldt County is approximately 91, meaning that for every 100,000 residents, approximately 91 tested positive daily over the last seven days. Case rates vary considerably by vaccination status, as illustrated in the graph below, which depicts average weekly case rates since January 2021 in unvaccinated and fully vaccinated residents.

The most recent seven-day average case rate for the period ending Jan. 23, for fully vaccinated individuals is 60 per 100,000 residents, while the case rate for unvaccinated individuals is 57 per 100,000 residents. View a more detailed depiction of the case rate graph here.

COVID-19 vaccines remain effective against the virus, but CDC data shows their effectiveness at preventing infection or severe illness wanes over time, especially in people aged 65 or older.

Residents, particularly those who are unvaccinated, are encouraged to take protective measures against the highly transmissible Omicron variant by washing hands frequently, wearing a well-fitted mask approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), distancing six feet from others when possible and avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces. The state remains under a mandatory mask requirement order in all indoor public spaces through Feb. 15.

COVID-19 vaccines remain effective against the virus, but CDC data shows their effectiveness at preventing infection or severe illness wanes over time, especially in people aged 65 or older. The CDC and other public health officials recommend eligible individuals aged 12 and older receive a booster, which increases the immune response and provides additional protection against infection and severe disease.

While vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals are both at high risk to get COVID-19, the risk of severe outcomes for those who are unvaccinated remains significantly higher. According to the latest data from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), unvaccinated people are eight times more likely to get COVID-19, 13 times more likely to be hospitalized from COVID-19 and 22 times more likely to die from COVID-19 than those who are vaccinated with a booster.

Humboldt County Public Health reported today the death of a resident in their 70s due to COVID-19. Staff in the Department Operations Center extend their condolences to all who have lost a loved one to the virus.

One new hospitalization, a resident in their 60s was reported. An additional 119 new cases were also reported, bringing to 17,509 the total number of confirmed positive cases for the virus locally.

Local health officials have indicated the county is showing early signs that it is past the recent peak of the record-high COVID-19 cases. However, community transmission and confirmed cases remain high and officials caution that a high point in hospitalizations tends to lag a few weeks after the peak in cases.

Residents, particularly those who are not vaccinated, are encouraged to take protective measures such as washing hands frequently, wearing a well-fitted mask approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), distancing six feet from others when possible and avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces. The state remains under a mandatory mask requirement order in all indoor public spaces through Feb. 15.

COVID-19 vaccines remain effective against the virus, but CDC data shows their effectiveness at preventing infection or severe illness wanes over time, especially in people aged 65 or older. With the recent emergence of the Omicron variant, the CDC and other public health officials are recommending eligible individuals aged 12 and older receive a booster, which increases the immune response and provides additional protection against infection and severe disease.

While vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals are both at high risk to get Omicron, the risk of severe outcomes for those who are unvaccinated remains significantly higher. According to the latest data from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), unvaccinated people are eight times more likely to get COVID-19, 13 times more likely to be hospitalized from COVID-19 and 22 times more likely to die from COVID-19 than those who are vaccinated with a booster.

The CDPH recommends individuals stay home and away from others and get tested if they become sick or experience COVID-19 symptoms, which may include fever, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue or muscle aches. COVID-19 symptoms often mimic common cold or flu illnesses.

As always, Humboldt County’s vaccination and testing services are available free of charge. While walk-ins are allowed at all Public Health clinics and some pharmacy vaccination sites, appointments are strongly recommended for all vaccinations and are the best way to ensure a shot is available during your visit. Appointments can be made at MyTurn.ca.gov.

Vaccines, including boosters, are available at local pharmacies. To check the availability of a specific vaccine, visit the vaccines.gov page, or text your ZIP code to 438829 to locate a nearby pharmacy offering vaccines.
