Star Trek: Picard

In response to a fan on Twitter, showrunner Terry Matalas implied he plans to kill off at least one member of The Next Generation crew in the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard.

Werewolf By Night

During a recent interview with Fandom, Michael Giacchino described the monsters in Werewolf By Night as “person[s] with a problem, who can’t solve it and needs help solving it.”

Too often, even in Marvel movies, a lot of times monsters are just used as something to kill, something to defeat. And I’m like, no, monsters are nothing but a person with a problem, who can’t solve it and needs help solving it. Everything that I loved as a kid about these [monster] films is that they were allegories for people with afflictions that need help. And I felt like that’s the point of view we need to take with this. It cannot just be about ‘Oh, there’s something different, let’s destroy it!’ There’s too much of that going on in our world these days.

I wanted to do something that was about, no, let’s peel back the layers of the onion and understand what’s behind this thing being a monster. Why is it happening? None of these monsters want to be monsters. They don’t want to go around indiscriminately killing people and destroying things. It’s just, that’s their lot in life. Everyone has a lot in life, we all have some struggles, some sort of thing that we’re struggling to solve or deal with within our own selves. And that’s where I want it to go with this story.

Star Wars: KOTOR II Switch DLC Appears To Have Missed Its Release Window

It’s officially October, and technically – we’re now out of the third quarter of 2022. While it might not seem like a big deal, it’s become quite a talking point for Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II fans who picked up the Switch version of the game.

Not long after the June 8th launch, Aspyr mentioned on its official website how the Sith Lord DLC for KOTOR II on Nintendo Switch would be released by Q3 2022:

When will this DLC be available?: “This DLC will be released in Q3 2022.”

It’s got players across social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Reddit wondering what’s going on – with some describing Aspyr’s communication as being “completely radio silent” over the past few months and noting how it has “officially missed” its own deadline. Here’s just a small sample:

Some fans are just asking for a status update on the DLC:

“Yeah, bad innit… was the main draw of the Switch version for me, and the silence on it is poor. I’m sure it’ll turn up eventually, but some word on it from the devs is needed at this stage.” (via Reddit)

In recent months, Aspyr has reportedly been removed from the KOTOR remake project. According to a story by Bloomberg, Embracer Group now has Saber Interactive’s Eastern European Studios working on this game.

When the Sith Lords Restored Content DLC is released, it will be available as a “free DLC” in the Nintendo Switch eShop. It comes packed with additional missions, dialogue options, encounters and much more. Here’s a rundown via Aspyr’s website:

– New HK Manufacturing Plant Mission – Play as your droid companion HK-47 and explore a mysterious HK Manufacturing Plant beneath the Telos military base.

– New Revamped Ending – Experience the final level in a new way, with greater interactions from your party members and added focus on your past choices.

– Livelier Crew Conversations – Get to know your crew on board the Ebon Hawk even better with additional lines of dialogue and interactions.

– Bonus Quests & Challenges – Discover even more quests and combat encounters scattered on various planets around the galaxy for an extra challenge.

It’s worth noting the base game save files will not be compatible with The Sith Lords Restored Content DLC, but players will still be able to access previous saves by disabling the DLC content from the main menu. You can read more about this in our previous story.

Nintendo Life has reached out to an Aspyr representative for comment about when this DLC will be released. If we hear any updates or developments, we’ll let you know.

That will include much of what was discussed above, but not the blockbuster Hall D23 panel that will undoubtedly make the biggest splash.

D23 will include a panel on Friday focused on Marvel, Star Wars, and Disney’s upcoming video games which will be streamed online. The event is expected to include reveals from LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, Marvel’s Midnight Suns, and more upcoming releases.

When it comes to the big Hall D23 presentation, there’s no telling what Lucasfilm and Marvel Studios have to offer, especially having already had some massive reveals earlier in the year. The MCU is expected to highlight the likes of Werewolf by Night, Deadpool 3, and more, while Star Wars goes big on the future of the MandoVerse and its other Disney+ content.

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige and Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy will make their big D23 presentations on Saturday, September 10.

Ewan McGregor Appears To Respond To Mark Ruffalo’s ‘Star Wars’ Criticism

By Sarah Curran.

It seems that Ewan McGregor is firing back at Mark Ruffalo after he recently dissed “Star Wars” while praising the MCU.

In an interview with Metro, Ruffalo said, “If you watch Star Wars, you’re pretty much going to get the same version of Star Wars each time … But with Marvel you can have a whole different feeling even within the Marvel Universe.”

McGregor appeared to respond to the “Hulk” star’s comments when asked if he’d ever consider joining the MCU during a fan expo in Boston.

“I don’t know that I want to do that,” said the actor, according to Comicbook.

“Because I love doing all different kinds of work. It’s true. I love to direct. I’d like to be in the theater again. I definitely want to do this again, you know, I’m in this ‘Star Wars’ world. I feel like I don’t need another … I’m not looking for that anyway.”

Both “Star Wars” and the MCU are Disney franchises

McGregor added, “That’s the beautiful thing about how passionate Disney, Lucasfilm, all of us are, who are involved with it is from the beginning is we try really hard not to let anything of the bad just to protect your experience of seeing it for the first time.”

Mark Ruffalo Defends Marvel’s Output With a Side-Eye at Star Wars

Image: Marvel Studios

While on a press tour for She-Hulk, Mark Ruffalo spoke with Metro about Marvel’s use of VFX and the enormity of the output from the studio. While he had only glowing praise for the leaps and bounds that CGI has taken over the past decade or so that he’s been involved with Marvel, he had some stronger feelings about the amount of “content” that Marvel puts out.

Ruffalo said that he’s not worried about the amount of work that Marvel releases. “I understand that these things run their course and then something else comes along. But the thing Marvel has done well is that, inside the MCU, just as they do with comic books, they let a director or an actor sort of recreate each piece to their own style, their likeness.”

A bold claim, considering that even as Marvel attempts to make in-roads into other genres with its work, there’s an overriding same-y tone and need for connection that sometimes frustratingly overrides that. And considering the new allegations about how Marvel films their movies, I don’t think that this is a very strong argument at all. Visual flair is well and good, but if you’re just offering variations on a theme is it really distinct?

Next, Ruffalo continues to dig his grave deeper by poking at the other big franchise that might be able to compete with Marvel’s output–fellow Disney megafranchise Star Wars. “If you watch a Star Wars, you’re pretty much going to get the same version of Star Wars each time… You’re always, really, in that same kind of world. But with Marvel you can have a whole different feeling even within the Marvel Universe.”

The thing is that part of me agrees with him: Star Wars does reuse the same stories and tropes, and seems to have an affinity for desert planets that I cannot truly comprehend, but to compare Marvel and Star Wars and act as if either one is superior to the other on an artistic basis of originality feels like a little bit of throwing stones in glass houses at this point. You’re playing the Hulk, sir, a character that has been adapted in largely similar ways out of the comics ever since Lou Ferrigno’s television Hulk first began airing in 1977, the same year the first Star Wars film released in theaters.

I’m not here to debate the artistic merits of Marvel vs. Star Wars, but to pretend for even a second like directors get more or less control within competing billion-dollar franchises is a fool’s errand. An aside here, but as soon as we start referring to any kind of art (even blockbuster movies) as “content” I feel as if we lose something, culturally speaking. Content feels clinical, it feels transactional in a way that makes me uncomfortable. I don’t want content, I want considerate, thoughtful work. I want people to know that this is handmade stuff, that this is done by real people doing real work. There is no such thing as Marvel content, but there is art, and if we treated these massive cultural moments with respect maybe we’d be able to change the culture.

So look, regardless of your feelings about the amount of work that any individual studio puts out, the fact that any actor is being asked to defend it might be a hint that there is, perhaps, too much out there—regardless of what fictional universe it’s from.

Top secrets of the Spielberg classic revealed

This Saturday, “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” turns 40. But the iconic alien doesn’t look a day over 10 million — his approximate age in a novelization of the 1982 film.

Steven Spielberg’s family drama, in which a young boy named Elliott (Henry Thomas) finds a lost alien in his yard, was an instant classic. It made “E.T. phone home” one of the most enduring catchphrases in all of cinema; it anointed Reese’s Pieces the It candy of the decade. It also introduced the world to 6-year-old Drew Barrymore, who played Elliott’s adorable younger sister Gertie.

The movie ran in theaters for an unheard-of full year, until June 1983.

Check out these insider facts about Spielberg’s epic childhood drama, then give it a rewatch: We dare you not to cry.

The concept for “E.T.” started out much darker

E.T. was originally supposed to be about an alien invasion.
AP

When Spielberg began to think about doing an alien-themed follow-up to his 1977 movie “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” he enlisted writer-director John Sayles to pen a screenplay called “Night Skies,” in which a farm community was terrorized by alien invaders. As the Guardian reported, “the tone of ‘Night Skies’ was set for horror and violence.” Fortunately, the director had a change of heart.

9-year-old Henry Thomas crushed his audition

Thomas, who had already had one role in the Sissy Spacek drama “Raggedy Man,” did an improvised audition with Spielberg in which he cried while pleading with a government agent not to take E.T. “The improvisation was so heartfelt and honest that I gave him the part right there,” Spielberg has said.

Ralph Macchio was almost in the movie

“Cobra Kai” star Macchio told People he had an opportunity to play Tyler, one of Elliott’s older brother’s friends. “C. Thomas Howell — my ‘Outsiders’ greaser buddy, Ponyboy — actually played that part,” he said in an interview on Drew Barrymore’s show. It was Howell’s film debut; “The Outsiders” came out the following year.

Spielberg drew on famous faces for his alien hero

E.T. was meant to have “frivolous” eyes.
Getty Images

In the special “The Making of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” the director shared that he wanted E.T.’s face to evoke several legends. “I remember saying to [special effects artist] Carlo [Rambaldi], here’s some pictures of Albert Einstein, Ernest Hemingway and Carl Sandburg. I love their eyes, can we make E.T.’s eyes as frivolous and also wizened and as sad as those three icons.”

Special effects artist Ben Burtt used many sources for E.T.’s voice — including a chainsmoker

Burtt got creative with E.T.’s voice.

Burtt sourced E.T.’s unusual vocal inflections from many places, he told the BBC. “There are raccoons in there, there are sea otters, there are some horses, there’s a burp from my old cinema professor from USC. There’s my wife’s labored breathing asleep at night with a cold.” But the main voice came from actress Pat Welsh, a chainsmoker. According to IMDb.com, she made $380.

Harrison Ford originally had a part

Another actor was almost part of the movie.
AP

Ford was dating “E.T.” screenwriter Melissa Mathison at the time — and had just shot Spielberg’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” He shot a cameo as the school principal, admonishing Elliott for setting dissection-bound frogs free. The scene was cut but, as Spielberg has said, “that’s where [Henry] got a chance to meet Harrison.”

An actor without legs gave E.T. his signature walk

E.T’s walk was unique.

In many scenes, E.T. is controlled by puppeteers. But Matthew De Meritt was 11 when he was hired to be inside the costume in the scene in which E.T. raids the refrigerator; born without legs, he walked on his hands, which gave the alien a unique waddle.

Spielberg gave multiple hat-tips to “Star Wars”

The director had fun giving shout-outs to the work of his friend George Lucas. In one scene, Elliott shows E.T. his “Star Wars” action figures; in another, his older brother Michael (Robert McNaughton) puts on a Yoda voice. And in the Halloween sequence, in which the brothers throw a sheet over E.T. to smuggle him out into the woods, they see a kid in a Yoda mask as they weave among the trick-or-treaters.

The doctors in the movie are really doctors

For the frightening sequence in which the house is taken over by scientists and medical teams, Spielberg enlisted real doctors to play the roles: “The entire team of doctors that was working on E.T. were real emergency room doctors and various specialists from around California, and that was entirely improvised. He just wanted them to do it like a real code blue situation,” McNaughton said.

Spielberg digitally erased guns in one version

As Elliott and E.T. are being chased by the feds, there’s a rifle-toting F.B.I. agent among their ranks. In a rerelease, the director replaced the gun with a less menacing walkie-talkie. He’s said he got a lot of negative feedback about revising the film: “I learned a big lesson and that’s the last time I decided to ever mess with the past.”

Spielberg was accused of plagiarism

The concept for “E.T.” was similar to “The Alien.”
REUTERS

Indian author Satyajit Ray believed the concept for “E.T.” was strikingly similar to a script he’d written in the 1960s called “The Alien,” about “an alien landing in a village in Bengal and becoming friends with a boy.” Ray was tipped off by American sci-fi author Arthur C. Clarke, after Clarke saw a screening of Spielberg’s movie. Spielberg denied the allegations, and ultimately Ray decided not to pursue legal action.

John Williams’ score made the film operatic

The director has said the emotional ending of “E.T.” was “as close to an opera … as anything I’ve ever done before in my life” due to the musical stylings of Williams, a longtime Spielberg, and Lucas, collaborator.

The “E.T.” Atari video game was legendarily bad

The E.T. video game came out in 1982.

Shortly after the movie came out, a game was developed for the Atari 2600 system. Turnaround time for a game was usually several months — but this one was churned out in five weeks. Looper.com noted, “Reviewers from the era found the game confusing, clunky, and hard to learn, with bad graphics even for the time. Apparently, children had an easier time playing than adults, but people did not like constantly falling into pits.”

There could have been a disturbing sequel

Spielberg realized a sequel to “E.T.” would ruin its reputation.
©Universal/courtesy Everett / E

Spielberg reunited with screenwriter Mathison for a treatment for “E.T. 2: Nocturnal Fears,” in which E.T. would return to earth amidst an invasion of aliens who “were carnivorous and emitted a ‘hypnotic hum’ with paralyzing effects on the surrounding wildlife.” Ultimately, he wisely concluded this might tarnish the original film’s legacy.

Apple Discontinues iPod, Mobile Gaming Icon, After 22 Years

Pour one out for every kid who one-strapped a backpack in middle school, as they’re likely in mourning today. With Apple’s discontinuation of the 7th-generation iPod Touch, announced yesterday, it’s official: the iPod is dead.

Ostensibly, the iPod was a music device, meant to digitize song libraries and move listeners away from the limitations and galactically better sound quality of physical media. (Whether such a shift was good for the music industry is, of course, another story.) But over its many iterations, the iPod also heralded another revolution: that of mobile gaming.

Once upon a time, mobile gaming consisted of playing Brick or Snake on your parents’ dusty Nokia. And sure, following its 2001 launch, the iPod—which literally featured a shoddy port of Brick following the device’s 2001 launch—had a similar landscape for a while. Over the next few years, the offerings grew, but not by much. In 2006, EA released iPod versions of minted classics like Sudoku and Solitaire. Kaplan, the for-profit educational behemoth, released a series of SAT prep study courses (to which I can only say: lol). Compared to other mobile gaming devices of the era, like, say, the Nintendo DS, the iPod was hardly revolutionary.

Then came the iPod Touch.

First released in 2007, the iPod Touch totally reimagined the iPod’s design. Rather than a brick with a wonkily controlled track wheel, the iPod Touch looked a lot like its contemporary, the iPhone: sleek, rectangular, affixed with a glass touch screen that coated its entire silhouette. Unlike the iPhone, you couldn’t use an iPod Touch to summon and instantly lose the courage to dial up your crush from algebra. But if you had a Wifi connection, you could download a bunch of games that’d at least distract you during algebra.

And some of the games of the era were truly excellent. Fruit Ninja! Tap Tap Revenge! Words with Friends! Temple Run practically created, or at least widely popularized, a new genre, laying the groundwork for truly terrific endless runners like Alto’s Odyssey. Personally, I had a soft spot for Doodle Jump, a platformer that cast you as an elephant (?) wearing a jetpack. The visuals, stylized to look like a lined paper notebook, are inked in memory. But for me, at least, it was also an early introduction to the wider world of leaderboards.

Some games, quality aside, went on to become legit cultural behemoths. Angry Birds spawned a feature film, along with crossovers with Star Wars and Transformers, and a gazillion other spin-offs. (My grandmother once bought me an Angry Birds bath mat, presuming that, seeing as I like video games, I must like Angry Birds, the only video game.) The impact was undeniable.

Raise your hand if these ads left an indelible impact on you, too.

And so, news of the iPod’s death set off a spirited wave of nostalgia in Kotaku’s Slack this afternoon.

Staff editor Lisa Marie Segarra shouted out pretty much all of the games listed above, and further pointed to the iPod as a catalyst for the indisputable Candy Crush craze. She also praised the tilt controls that came with some games, which were “so innovative at the time. Or at least it felt like it.”

“What a time to be alive,” added staff writer Zack Zwiezen. “I truly miss the older era of the App Store. … No doubt we have great stuff today, but I can’t help but long for those simpler times when I drank fake beer and played with knock-off lightsaber apps.”

The times are indeed less simple. Rather than the handful of must-play options, Apple’s gaming ecosystem is bigger than ever, as major games—everything from blockbusters like XCOM and Genshin Impact to indie sleeper hits like Sayonara Wild Hearts and Baba is You—make their way to the App Store. Apple Arcade, a subscription service that grants access to a library of games, is slowly becoming an essential scouting ground for under-the-radar gems. (Many Apple Arcade games eventually make their way to Nintendo Switch or traditional consoles, where they become ‘legitimized’ in the eyes of the hardcore player, something that goes on to obscure mobile game origins.)

But every time one of these once-essential devices gasps its final breath, I find myself struck at the finality—how everything, no matter its apparent staying power or cultural impact, is ephemeral, a fleeting moment you don’t realize was fleeting until it’s gone. As they say: Wouldn’t it be nice to recognize you’re living in the good times when you’re actually living in the good times? I think so.

Anyway, yeah, RIP to the iPod. You had a good run. You’ve left a good legacy. And to really get all mid-2000s: Thnks fr th Mmrs.

New Star Wars Game Announcement Comes With Bad News

The announcement of a new (or rather, a returning) Star Wars video game has come with some slightly bad news. Recently, it was revealed that the 2008 release of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed would be getting a new re-release on Nintendo Switch later this spring. Over the years, The Force Unleashed has been a fan-favorite Star Wars game for many, so to see it getting a new port on a modern platform isn’t a bad thing whatsoever. However, the version of the game that is getting this new port is definitely less than ideal.

To be specific, the Nintendo Wii iteration of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is the one that is being ported to Switch later this year. When The Force Unleashed first launched over a decade ago, it came to a variety of different platforms. As such, some versions of the game were considered better than others. For the most part, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 iterations of The Force Unleashed were considered the best of the bunch while the Wii version was seen as a bit lesser. So to see that the Wii edition of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is the one that is being brought over to Switch isn’t something that a number of fans likely didn’t want to hear.

Although this news is a bit of a bummer, the reason why the Wii version of The Force Unleashed is the one that’s being ported to Switch is because the motion controls that were seen in that iteration of the game are also making the transition to Nintendo’s latest platform. Since the Switch’s Joy-Con controllers also have motion functionality, this version of The Force Unleashed was seemingly chosen to bring over to incorporate this aspect of the game. And while some fans might love that the motion controls are still going to be present, the overall port’s quality could take a dip as a result.

As for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed as a whole, the game is set to land on Switch later this year on April 20th. If you’re looking to pick up the re-release for yourself, it’s available to pre-order right now for $19.99.

Are you disappointed to hear that the Wii version of The Force Unleashed is the one that is being brought to Switch? Let me know your own thoughts on this situation either down in the comments or on Twitter at @MooreMan12.
