UGA football car crash deaths: Injured passengers identified in a car crash that killed player and staffer following championship celebration

CNN
 —

On the heels of the University of Georgia’s national championship victory, police are investigating a fatal single-vehicle car crash early Sunday that killed football player Devin Willock and staff member Chandler LeCroy just hours after the Bulldogs’ triumphant celebration with fans, authorities said.

Shortly before 3 a.m. Sunday, LeCroy, 24, was driving with Willock, 20, and two other passengers near the UGA campus in Athens when the vehicle went off the road, barreling into two power poles and several trees, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department said in a news release.

Willock died on the scene and LeCroy died after being taken to a hospital, police said. LeCroy was a football recruiting analyst for UGA, according to her LinkedIn.

Two passengers affiliated with the football team were also injured in the crash. Georgia offensive lineman Warren McClendon, 21, received minor injuries, and Victoria Bowles, 26, had serious injuries, according to police.

McClendon started at right tackle for Georgia this season and declared for the NFL draft earlier Saturday. His father, Warren McClendon Sr., told the Athens Banner-Herald he needed stitches on his forehead but is “doing well.”

The crash came hours after Sanford Stadium and the surrounding streets were brimming with ecstatic fans who had come to celebrate the Bulldogs’ second straight national championship. But by the next morning, they had joined the team in mourning the sudden loss of Willock and LeCroy.

Fan Daniel Dewitt attended Saturday’s victory parade and told CNN Willock was “upbeat and happy” as the team passed throngs of supporters draped in red and black.

“It’s just heartbreaking coming off a celebratory week. And the parade yesterday, getting to see this player and then come to find out he lost his life early this morning, the entire Bulldog nation is at a loss,” Dewitt said.

Photos of the crash site taken by nearby residents show a wooden power pole snapped in half and the car’s frame crumpled against an apartment building.

“That car dented like a tin can,” Cecily Pangburn, a resident of the apartment complex told CNN. She described hearing a loud bang when the crash happened, followed by her power going out.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, police said. Investigators have asked anyone with information to contact authorities.

The two UGA team members were remembered by several university leaders as vibrant and valued presences in the football program.

“Devin was an outstanding young man in every way. He was always smiling, was a great teammate and a joy to coach,” head football coach Kirby Smart said in a statement Sunday.

“Chandler was a valuable member of our football staff and brought an incredible attitude and energy every single day,” the coach said.

Support for the Bulldogs also flooded in from across the college football community on Sunday, including from head coaches Brian Kelly of Louisiana State University and Hugh Freeze of Auburn University.

“These two special people meant the world to our football program and athletic department,” UGA athletics director Josh Brooks said in a statement. “We are working with our medical staff and mental health and performance team to ensure our staff and student-athletes have all the support they need during this extremely difficult time.”

Willock, a redshirt sophomore from New Milford, New Jersey, joined the team as a freshman in 2020, according to UGA’s football roster. He played on the offensive line in all 15 of the team’s games this year.

The player spent Saturday with fans, soaking in the joy of last week’s championship win. One fan in particular got some quality time with Willock in the hours before his death.

Willock met starstruck 7-year-old Camdyn Gonzales after the young fan spotted Willock as he was leaving the Texas Roadhouse restaurant in Athens on Saturday.

The player gave Camdyn a fist bump and let the boy try on his enormous 2021 championship ring.

“He was humble and very appreciative that we knew who he was and wanted to talk to him,” Camdyn’s grandfather, Sam Kramer, said, adding that Willock seemed “so full of life and just happy.”

Dewitt, the fan who saw Willock in Saturday’s parade, told CNN he has a 2021 UGA championship tattoo and plans to get a matching one for this season’s victory. This time, he said, it will feature Willock’s number, 77.

European Commission responds after Microsoft Activision comments from staffer receive backlash

The European Commission has clarified claims of perceived bias in the probe into Xbox Game Studios (Microsoft) [2,292 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/companies/microsoft/”>Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard [1,162 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/companies/activision-blizzard/”>Activision Blizzard deal, following comments from a senior staff member on social media.

Ricardo Cardoso, the Deputy Head of Unit Interinstitutional & Outreach at the governing body, tweeted earlier this week that the “Commission is working to ensure that you will still be able to play Call of Duty on other consoles (including my Playstation)”.

The statement, while factually in-line with the remit of the body, was met with criticism from some players over perceived Sony Interactive Entertainment [2,646 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/companies/sony/”>Sony bias, especially following repeated assurance from Xbox [6,009 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/platforms/xbox/”>Xbox claiming Call of Duty will remain on PlayStation [6,517 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/platforms/playstation/”>PlayStation for the foreseeable future.

Now, the European Commission has clarified in a statement to Tweaktown that Cardoso is not involved in the process whatsoever.

“Mr Cardoso works in the Director General for the Internal Market and not in the Directorate General for Competition,” the statement reads.

“Mr Cardoso is not involved in the assessment of this transaction. Furthermore, as indicated clearly in his Twitter profile, he tweets in a personal capacity.”

On Saturday Cardoso tweeted the following: “To clarify: I am not involved in the assessment of the merger and don’t even work in the department dealing with mergers. As is clear from my profile my comments are personal and not a Commission position, whose decision will be taken on the basis of the facts and the law.”

In the replies to the original tweet, the use of the word “my” when referring to PlayStation seems to have irked fans the most, however, Cardoso was seemingly referring to the console he owns, rather than an allegiance to a platform.

The European Commission has officially launched an in-depth probe of Microsoft’s proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

As expected, following its initial inquiries into the $68.7 billion deal, the European watchdog said on Tuesday that it had opened a ‘phase II’ investigation due to competition concerns.

“The Commission is concerned that the proposed acquisition may reduce competition in the markets for the distribution of console and personal computers (‘ PC [6,536 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/platforms/pc/”>PCs’) video games and for PC operating systems,” it said.

While the deal has been approved by regulators in Saudi Arabia and Brazil, the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority recently expanded its investigation to a second phase. It is in the process of inviting members of the public to share their views on the acquisition before giving its final decision by March 1.

The US Federal Trade Commission could reportedly make its ruling on the deal this month.

Microsoft’s head of gaming Phil Spencer [487 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/people/phil-spencer/”>Phil Spencer recently said he believes heavy scrutiny from regulators is “fair” and “warranted”, and that he remains confident the deal will be approved.

Fred Savage Accused of Sexual Misconduct by Ex-‘Wonder Years’ Staffer

A former crewmember on the reboot of The Wonder Years has accused Fred Savage of forcing himself on her at a bar one night in a new Hollywood Reporter piece detailing some of the allegations that may have led to Savage’s ouster from the show earlier this year.

Back in May, Savage was fired from his role as executive producer and director of The Wonder Years following an investigation into allegations of inappropriate conduct. Executives at Disney, which owns ABC — the network on which The Wonder Years aired — declined to share details, though reports at the time highlighted incidents of “verbal outbursts and inappropriate behavior.”

According to the new THR piece, Savage’s exit came after a group of six women who worked on the show sent a complaint to Disney and spoke to an HR executive about their concerns in February. While they all acknowledged that Savage could be kind, charismatic, and supportive, they claim he was also prone to bouts of anger and verbal harassment, especially towards women. The group added that they were concerned about Savage’s relationship with a much younger woman on the crew, as well as the “very blatant favoritism” he showed towards the women who said Savage later assaulted her in a bar bathroom.

A rep for Savage did not return Rolling Stone‘s request for comment, though Savage did share a statement with The Hollywood Reporter: “Since I was 6 years old, I have worked on hundreds of sets with thousands of people, and have always strived to contribute to an inclusive, safe and supportive work environment. It is devastating to learn that there are co-workers who feel I have fallen short of these goals. While there are some incidents being reported that absolutely did not and could not have happened, any one person who feels hurt or offended by my actions is one person too many. I will work to address and change any behavior that has negatively affected anyone, as nothing in this world is more important to me than being a supportive co-worker, friend, husband, father and person.”

A rep for ABC/Disney referred back to the statement Disney shared in May: “Recently, we were made aware of allegations of inappropriate conduct by Fred Savage, and as is policy, an investigation was launched. Upon its completion, the decision was made to terminate his employment as an executive producer and director of The Wonder Years.”

The woman who claims Savage forced himself on her at a bar said she and Savage became friends over the course of many months, and described their relationship as “very platonic.” She claimed Savage would take her to dinner, tried to boost her writing and comedy career, and even met her parents (he also reportedly tried to buy her expensive gifts, though the woman said she declined). Though the woman was abruptly fired from The Wonder Years, she said she doesn’t believe Savage made that call, and said he remained supportive.

One night in early December 2021, the woman alleged Savage invited her to join a group of Wonder Years folks at a bar near the house in Atlanta where Savage stayed during production. After going to the bathroom, the woman claims Savage entered the restroom as she was walking out of the stall and approached her with “just like, dead eyes,” and pushed her against the wall.

“I said, `Please, don’t do this.’ I meant ruining the friendship,” the woman claimed. “I was pleading, not from fear so much, but this was no going back.” She continued: “He put his mouth on mine very forcefully. He went for the top of my pants. I brushed him away. Then he put his mouth on mine again, grabbed my hand and pulled it on his groin area. I was pulling back. He stopped very angrily. I shoulder checked him so I could get out.”

After the alleged incident, the woman claims Savage tried to contact her numerous times to meet, though she never accepted his invitations. She also shared a voicemail Savage left her that she never responded to: “It’s your old friend Fred,” Savage allegedly said in the message. “We worked together for a while and then we didn’t and then I was a huge asshole. A huge asshole. And I’m really sorry. And I’ve kind of owed you an apology for a minute here and so, uh, the truth is I really like you and I really want to be friends and I’m so sorry that I fucked that up.”

The other younger crew member Savage allegedly grew close to on The Wonder Years declined to speak with The Hollywood Reporter. One colleague, however, said Savage could be “extremely controlling of her daily behaviors,” and added, “He was manipulative and erratic.” Another woman said she once tried to protect the younger crew member from Savage, who “proceeded to verbally harass me and belittle me.”

There were also additional claims that the young woman had essentially moved into the house Savage was living in during production. The group of six women who reported Savage to Disney said this relationship was one of the main reasons they lodged their complaint.

“We all felt supported by Fred. We truly thought he supported women,” one of the six women said. “He told us he supported women. But this kind of support isn’t real.”

Bannon trial Wednesday: Prosecution calls FBI agent, Hill staffer

The government rested its contempt of Congress case Wednesday against former Trump adviser Stephen K. Bannon after calling just two witnesses — a congressional staffer and an FBI agent — to describe the tough-talking podcaster’s alleged refusal to provide documents or testimony to the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack.

The fast pace of the prosecution, which began Tuesday afternoon and finished a day later, speaks to the relatively simple factual and legal issues at the heart of the high-profile, politically charged trial: whether Bannon spurned a congressional subpoena and, therefore, committed the rarely charged crime.

Prosecutors called as their first witness Kristin Amerling, the chief counsel for the Jan. 6 committee, who described in detail how Bannon did not engage with the committee until after he had missed the first response deadline. In the weeks and months that followed, Bannon still refused to provide the information sought by subpoena, Amerling said.

Bannon’s legal team countered Wednesday by asking about a series of letters, some as recent as a week ago, between Bannon’s lawyer and the committee in which the prospect of his testimony was still discussed. The defense is trying to show that he didn’t refuse to cooperate, he was just negotiating.

Prosecutor: Bannon thumbed his nose at Congress, the law

M. Evan Corcoran, one of Bannon’s lawyers, also suggested that Bannon had been told by Donald Trump that the former president had invoked executive privilege — a legal claim meant to shield some of the president’s conversations from congressional inquiries.

In rejecting the committee’s subpoenas in late 2021, lawyer Robert Costello — who represented Bannon in his dealings with the House select committee — claimed in a letter that Trump had invoked the privilege to cover Bannon. Earlier this month, however, as Bannon was seeking to delay his trial, Trump told Bannon he was no longer asserting such a privilege.

But Amerling said both of those claims were specious, based on a mischaracterization of what executive privilege is, and how it works. “The president had not formally or informally invoked the privilege, even if you accept the premise that the privilege applied,” she testified.

U.S. District Court Judge Carl J. Nichols has previously said that it’s unclear if Trump ever invoked executive privilege. Also uncertain is whether a former president can claim such a privilege, let alone whether it would cover conversations with a non-government employee like Bannon.

In any case, Nichols has ruled that the privilege is not a valid defense for Bannon, unless he can show it caused him to misunderstand the subpoena’s October 2021 compliance deadlines.

Bannon’s defense strategy became clearer Wednesday, as his lawyers repeatedly suggested he and the committee were negotiating in late 2021 about information he might provide and continued to do so as recently as a week ago. The defense team also tried to show that the committee’s Democratic chairman, Bennie G. Thompson (Miss.), played a key — and political — role in the pursuit of Bannon.

A day earlier, Bannon told reporters outside the courthouse that Thompson didn’t have the “guts” to come testify against him, sending Amerling instead.

Prosecutors repeatedly objected to the defense strategy, saying it was a legal fiction designed to fool the jury into thinking Bannon had acted appropriately. Nichols said he would not allow the high-profile trial to become “a political circus,” warning that he would allow Bannon’s team to raise some political questions but also would police the issue.

On at least 15 occasions, Trump’s choices escalated tensions that culminated in Capitol riot

While defense lawyers tried to make the case about political leanings and alliances, prosecutors sought to narrow the focus to a more straightforward set of letters between Bannon’s lawyer and the committee, including one from Thompson warning that Bannon’s “defiance” could result in a criminal referral for contempt of Congress. Bannon was indicted in November.

Corcoran grilled Amerling over the process by which the subpoenas were served and the letters created, asking specifically which parts of the letters were penned by Thompson. Amerling said she couldn’t remember that level of detail, and that such letters were generally drafted by staff before being reviewed and signed by lawmakers.

Corcoran then tried a very different line of attack, suggesting that Amerling’s past work history and book club membership with a prosecutor might have tainted the case.

Amerling acknowledged that about 15 years ago, she worked for then-congressman Henry Waxman, a California Democrat, alongside Molly Gaston, who is now an assistant U.S. attorney handling the Bannon prosecution and other Jan. 6 cases.

Amerling also said she is in a book club with Gaston, made up primarily of people who used to work for Waxman.

“So you’re in a book club with the prosecutor in this case?” asked Corcoran. “We are,” replied Amerling, though she said she hadn’t attended one of the gatherings in more than a year, and didn’t think she’d seen Gaston at a book club meeting in years.

Asked whether the book club talked about politics, Amerling replied, “The conversations cover a whole variety of topics. … It’s not unusual that we would talk about politics in some way or another.”

Amerling said under reexamination by prosecutors that she had never discussed Bannon’s case with Gaston and their acquaintance had no bearing on the committee’s action or the U.S. prosecution.

Prosecutors also called FBI special agent Stephen Hart to the stand to discuss his conversation in November 2021 with Costello, the lawyer who represented Bannon in his dealings with the committee, who may testify as a defense witness.

In that conversation, Hart testified, Costello said Bannon was “fully engaged” in the discussions about the subpoena. The lawyer at no point suggested there was any confusion about the committee’s subpoena deadlines, Hart said.

Bannon, a bombastic media figure, has been restrained in court this week, often sitting with his hands clasped in front of him. But once the FBI agent took the stand, Bannon became more animated, laughing at one answer, then shaking his head in apparent exasperation over testimony about Hart’s conversation with Costello.
