Carbon Nanotubes Could Revolutionize Everything From Batteries and Water Purifiers to Auto Parts and Sporting Goods

Scientists at the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL)  are scaling up the production of vertically aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT). This incredible material could revolutionize diverse commercial products ranging from rechargeable batteries, sporting goods, and automotive parts to boat hulls and water filters. The research was published recently in the journal Carbon.

Most carbon nanotube (CNT) production today is unorganized CNT architectures that is used in bulk composite materials and thin films. However, for many uses, organized CNT architectures, like vertically aligned forests, provide critical advantages for exploiting the properties of individual CNTs in macroscopic systems.

“Robust synthesis of vertically-aligned carbon nanotubes at large scale is required to accelerate deployment of numerous cutting-edge devices to emerging commercial applications,” said LLNL scientist and lead author Francesco Fornasiero. “To address this need, we demonstrated that the structural characteristics of single-walled CNTs produced at wafer scale in a growth regime dominated by bulk diffusion of the gaseous carbon precursor are remarkably invariant over a broad range of process conditions.”

The team of researchers discovered that the vertically oriented SWCNTs retained very high quality when increasing precursor concentration (the initial carbon) up to 30-fold, the catalyst substrate area from 1 cm2 to 180 cm2, growth pressure from 20 to 790 Mbar and gas flowrates up to 8-fold.

LLNL scientists derived a kinetics model that shows the growth kinetics can be accelerated by using a lighter bath gas to aid precursor diffusion. In addition, byproduct formation, which becomes progressively more important at higher growth pressure, could be greatly mitigated by using a hydrogen-free growth environment. The model also indicates that production throughput could be increased by 6-fold with carbon conversion efficiency of higher than 90% with the appropriate choice of the CNT growth recipe and fluid dynamics conditions.

“These model projections, along with the remarkably conserved structure of the CNT forests over a wide range of synthesis conditions, suggest that a bulk-diffusion-limited growth regime may facilitate preservation of vertically aligned CNT-based device performance during scale up,” said LLNL scientist and first author Sei Jin Park.

The team concluded that operating in a growth regime that is quantitatively described by a simple CNT growth kinetics model can facilitate process optimization and lead to a more rapid deployment of cutting-edge vertically-aligned CNT applications.

Applications include lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, water purification, thermal interfaces, breathable fabrics, and sensors.

WATCH NOW: Police shoot suspected robber at Dick’s Sporting Goods | Crime and Courts

SCHERERVILLE — Police shot and wounded a suspected robber Saturday afternoon at the Dick’s Sporting Goods store, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. said Schererville Police spotted three suspects around 4:30 p.m. as officers arrived at the retailer in the 100 block of Indianapolis Boulevard in response to a call of a robbery.

Martinez said one of the suspects driving a getaway car rammed a Schererville Police patrol vehicle.

Fearing for their safety, Schererville Police opened fire and struck one of the suspects, Martinez said.

The sheriff said the wounded individual was taken to a Region hospital for treatment. The other two were taken into custody.

No police officers or civilians were harmed in the incident, Martinez said.

Some two dozen law enforcement officers from Schererville and surrounding communities also responded to the scene at the busy Shops on Main shopping center.

Yellow crime-scene tape and police SUVs blocked access to a huge swath of the parking lot adjacent to Indianapolis Boulevard and Main Street beginning around 5 p.m. and continuing well into the night. Multiple ambulances also were at the store.

Several shoppers coming and going out of nearby retailers stood in the rain to watch police officers chat in small groups outside Dick’s in the aftermath of the incident.

Schererville Police Chief Pete Sormaz declined to immediately say exactly what happened in and around the sporting goods store.

“It’s an isolated incident, this situation. The investigation is ongoing. We’re trying to get all the pieces together,” Sormaz said. “Right now the outer perimeter, the businesses, everything is safe. It’s just isolated to the Dick’s parking lot right here.”

Crime-scene investigators from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department arrived at Dick’s shortly after 6 p.m.

Sormaz said Schererville Police will provide more information about the incident after the investigation is complete, likely sometime Sunday.

Cardi B Wins Defamation War With Beachgoers Sporting MAGA Hat, Flag

Cardi B is the victor in yet another libel lawsuit – this time winning after a New York judge ruled Friday that the three Suffolk County beachgoers suing the “WAP” artist, her sister and a third woman over a caught-on-video verbal dispute had “failed to sufficiently plead” their case.

Plaintiffs Manuel Alarcon, Peter Caliendo and Pauline Caliendo sued back on Sept. 21, 2020, alleging that video of the altercation shared online by Cardi after it was first published by her younger sister Hennessy Carolina Almanzar unfairly accused them of being “racist.”

They said Alarcon was wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat and a vehicle near the Caliendos’ beach encampment was sporting a “Trump” flag when Hennessy “raged” at them with “threats, foul and intimidating language” and “defamatory statements.” They said some of the disparaging comments were directed at “Donald Trump and his supporters.” They also claimed Hennessy battered Alarcon and Peter Caliendo when she allegedly “sprayed her copious spittle” on them.

Cardi, Hennessy and a third plaintiff named Michelle Diaz, identified as Hennessy’s girlfriend, called the lawsuit “baseless” in a reply filing seeking its dismissal. The judge granted the request Friday, ruling that Cardi wasn’t even at Smith Point beach the day of the Sept. 6, 2020 confrontation, and when she shared a snippet of video later that day, she didn’t identify anyone by name or make any libelous statements.

“[Plaintiffs] have failed to allege any special harm or defamation per se,” Judge William Condon wrote in his decision. “They cannot specifically identify who the defamatory statements were made to. Further, neither Cardi B nor Michelle Diaz made any defamatory statements or publish(ed) any video to the Internet concerning the incident. The words uttered to plaintiffs do not arise to defamatory language as they were merely general insults.”

Judge Condon also ruled that Hennessy made no “menacing gestures” and never intended any spit “to make bodily contact with the plaintiffs,” so their claims of assault and battery failed as well.

Lawyers on both sides did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Rolling Stone on Friday.

In their now-dismissed lawsuit, Alarcon and the Caliendos claimed Hennessy and Diaz illegally parked their Mercedes G6 on the beach, blocking one of their vehicles.

“My sister can’t go to the beach in the Hampton’s wit out trump supporters harassing cause they were by themselves & Santa Claus was harassing my sis GF all because they are a Afro/Hispanic gay couple,” Cardi B captioned the video she tweeted Sept. 6.

In the motion to dismiss the lawsuit, filed last September, the lawyer representing Cardi, Hennessy and Diaz argued that Hennessy’s statements in the video were “obviously” not meant “to be taken literally.”

“She exclaimed, ‘I got a dildo, I’m gonna shove it up your ass then your husband’s ass,’ despite the fact that she was in the middle of a crowded beach without a dildo. This hyperbolic and figurative language cannot form the basis of a defamation claim,” the filing argued.

Cardi’s legal win on Friday filed after she won a $4 million defamation verdict against YouTube blogger Tasha K in January. In that case, Cardi was the plaintiff, and she successfully convinced a jury that she was defamed with false claims she had herpes, used cocaine and worked as a prostitute.
