‘First time I’ve ever spoken about what happened’ ‘

Brooke Shields is speaking out for the first time about a sexual assault she experienced in her early 20s. The actress and model shares her story in Lana Wilson’s new two-part documentary Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields, which premiered today at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. Although Shields doesn’t identify her assaulter in the film, she confirms it was someone she knew and was friendly with. “This is the first time I’ve ever spoken about what happened,” Shields says as she tearfully recounts her story.

At the time the assault occurred, the former child star was looking to re-start her acting career after stepping away from the spotlight to attend Princeton University. But her re-entry into Hollywood proved more difficult than expected. That was when her assaulter first reached out. “I had heard there was a movie being made, and I was in consideration,” Shields recalls in the film. “It was the first time since college that any interested was sort of expressed [in me].”

“We had a dinner,” she continues. “I thought it was a work meeting. I had met this person before, and he was always nice to me.” But the mood of the meeting abruptly changed midway through the meal, and she quickly began looking to make an exit. “I said, ‘I have to get a cab,’ and he said, ‘Come back to the hotel — I’ll call you a cab.'”

Following him up to his hotel room, Shields remembers being left alone for a period of time and feeling uncertain what to do. “I don’t want to go over to the phone, because it’s not my phone,” she says. “I don’t want to sit down, because I’m not staying.” While looking out at the view of the beach with a pair of binoculars, her assaulter re-emerged. “The door opens, and the person comes out naked,” she says. “I put the binoculars back and he was right on me.”

“It was like wrestling,” Shields describes, adding that she was too scared of being choked or hit to think of fighting back. “I just absolutely froze. I thought: ‘My one ‘No’ should have been enough. Stay alive and get out.'”

During the assault, Shields says that she “disassociated” herself from her body, an experience she’d had earlier in her career on the set of the 1981 Franco Zeffirelli film Endless Love. While filming a love scene for that romance, Shields — who was 15 when the film was shot — remembers the late Italian director grabbing her toe and twisting it to capture the look of “ecstasy” that he wanted on camera.

“It was more angst than anything because he was hurting me,” Shields says in Pretty Baby. “I didn’t want to appear stupid our untalented, so I just disassociated. It’s like you’re [instantly] zooming out: seeing a situation, but you’re not connected to it. You instantly become. a vapor of yourself around something that’s happening.” (Zeffirelli also directed the 1968 film version of Romeo & Juliet that featured a brief nude scene with the film’s then-underage stars, Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting. Both actors are now suing Paramount over the scene.

When the assault ended, Shields recalls her still-nude attacker not even acknowledging what happened. “The next thing I know, the door is open and the person says, ‘I’ll see you around.’ I just said ‘Yeah,’ and walked out, went down in the elevator and got my own cab. I cried all the way to my friend’s apartment.”

According to Shields, she later confronted her assaulter in a letter rather than discuss the incident publicly. “I said, ‘That was a huge trust that was just blown up. How dare you? I’m better than that. I’m better than you are. That’s the way I dealt with things. I wanted to erase the whole thing from my mind and body and just keep on the path that I was on. The system had never once come to help me. So I just had to get stronger on my own.”

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter prior to the Sundance premiere of Pretty Baby, Shields said that she initially wasn’t sure if she’d share her story when she sat down to be interviewed by Wilson for the film. “I had no idea I was going to say it,” she explained, adding that the tenor of the #MeToo times made her realize now would be the right time to speak up. “I feel as a mother of two young girls that I hope that just by even hearing my incident that I can add myself to becoming an advocate. Because this is something that does happen every day, and it should not be happening. I felt that I had arrived at a place where I could talk about it. It’s taken me a long time.”

Premiering on Hulu later this year, Pretty Baby features Shields reflecting on many of her high-profile relationships, including with Michael Jackson, who she says was never a romantic partner despite the intense public scrutiny of their years-long friendship. “We met when I was 13 and we hung out,” she recalls in the film. “It was very childlike.”

“We were just really friends,” Shields continues. “But he always wanted to be sort of seen with me. If he would pick a restaurant, I would say, ‘How did [the paparazzi] know we were here?’ And then at one point, he said that we should adopt a child and raise a child together.”

The actress also indicates that Jackson lied when he told Oprah Winfrey that he and Shields were dating during a famous TV interview in 1993. “I called him [afterwards] and said, ‘What are you doing?'” she remembers. “‘I’m currently with my boyfriend in New York City! What are you doing?’ I eventually lost touch with him.”

Collin Gosselin has not spoken to siblings in ‘five or six years’

Kate Gosselin and Jon Gosselin’s son Collin has not spoken to his most of his siblings in “five or six years.”

The teenager, 18, told Entertainment Tonight Monday that the distance from his fellow sextuplets Aaden, Joel, Alexis and Leah, as well as 22-year-old twins Madelyn and Cara, has been “tough.”

Although Collin — who does talk to his sister Hannah — “would love to have a relationship” with his brothers and sisters, he has not “reached out to them” — and they haven’t reached out either.

“I want to respect their space and their time and respect how they feel about everything, so I’m kind of just waiting for the day that they reach out,” he explained. “I don’t want to reach out.

“I don’t want to invade their space,” the former reality star continued. “I’d rather just let them do it on their own terms.”

49ers Notebook: Griese hasn’t spoken with Garoppolo; Confidence in Banks; Raiders working out Kaepernick

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

On Wednesday, the San Francisco 49ers made their assistant coaches available to reporters, as they do every offseason. Below are some noteworthy tidbits from the interactions.

No contact with Garoppolo

On Tuesday, tight end George Kittle said he hasn’t spoken with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo since the team cleaned out their lockers after the season. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said the 49ers still intend to trade Garoppolo, but also said nothing is guaranteed.

On Wednesday, San Francisco’s new quarterbacks coach, Brian Griese, said he has worked closely with all of the team’s quarterbacks this offseason, except for Garoppolo. In fact, the assistant coach hasn’t even spoken with Garoppolo.

Yes, Garoppolo is rehabbing from his March 8 shoulder surgery. Still, the position coach not working at all with the quarterback is a good indicator that the team is focused on moving forward without him.

Chris Foerster confident in Aaron Banks

Last year’s second-round pick, Aaron Banks, played just five offensive snaps during his rookie campaign in 2021. However, the 49ers seem confident that the offensive lineman can make more of an impact during his second NFL season.

49ers offensive line coach Chris Foerster believes Banks can earn the starting left guard spot following the departure of Laken Tomlinson to the New York Jets.

Kris Kocurek praised Armstead’s adaptability in 2021

Defensive line coach Kris Kocurek shared that the 49ers value versatility along the defensive front. That shouldn’t surprise anyone. However, the assistant gave a lot of credit to Arik Armstead’s adaptability for the unit’s success in 2021, especially after injuries impacted the team.
“I didn’t mandate anything,” Kocurek shared. “I said, ‘Hey, I’m just bouncing this off of you. What do you think about it?’ … He was all for [moving inside]. Arik, the main thing that he showed me is he’s an unselfish player. He’s a team-first guy. He’s been a captain the last two years. The guys look up to him.

“And most people can’t make that transition midseason. If you’re going to make that type of transition, it usually needs to be in the offseason, [using] the OTAs to get kind of acquainted in there, and then sharpen it out in [training] camp, and then hit the ground running Week 1.

“He gets thrown in there Week 7, Week 8. It’s not the easiest thing to do. Arik excelled in there as the season went on. … And then in the playoffs, I thought he played his best ball, was a difference-making type player in there, run and pass.”

Raiders working out Colin Kaepernick

This one isn’t from Wednesday’s media availability, but it is still noteworthy. Former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who last played in the league during the 2016 season, has a workout scheduled with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Kaepernick has been out of the league since the start of head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch’s regime when the 49ers opted not to bring back the quarterback.

Kaepernick’s NFL career was halted after the quarterback started kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial injustice, which sparked many others to follow in his footsteps the following season. Director Spike Lee is working on a multipart documentary for ESPN that will focus on the polarizing quarterback.

In 2021, Netflix released the drama series “Colin in Black & White,” narrated by Kaepernick.

China hits back at WTA as IOC says it has spoken again to Peng Shuai | China

China has attacked the Women’s Tennis Association’s boycott in response to the treatment of Peng Shuai, as the International Olympic Committee claimed to have had a second video chat with the player.

Wang Wenbin, a foreign ministry spokesperson, said at a daily briefing that his government was “always firmly opposed to acts that politicise sports”.

The WTA said on Wednesday it was suspending all tournaments in China in response to continued questions over Peng’s condition.

Its chair, Steve Simon, said he did not see how he could ask his athletes to compete in mainland China and Hong Kong “when Peng Shuai is not allowed to communicate freely and has seemingly been pressured to contradict her allegation of sexual assault”.

He said: “Given the current state of affairs, I am also greatly concerned about the risks that all of our players and staff could face if we were to hold events in China in 2022.”

Peng, 35, accused a 75-year-old former senior Chinese official of having sexually assaulted her in a lengthy social media post on 2 November. The essay was quickly removed and she was not seen in public for more than two weeks.

The IOC, which was accused of staging a “publicity stunt” for Beijing by holding a video chat with Peng on 21 November and reporting that she said she was “safe and well”, said it had held a second call with her on Wednesday.

It said: “We share the same concern as many other people and organisations about the wellbeing and safety of Peng Shuai. We are using ‘quiet diplomacy’ which, given the circumstances and based on the experience of governments and other organisations, is indicated to be the most promising way to proceed effectively in such humanitarian matters.”

No details were given of the conversation.

The WTA was one of the first international sports associations to question Peng’s wellbeing. Fellow tennis stars from Naomi Osaka to Serena Williams have tweeted in solidarity with Peng using the hashtag #WhereIsPengShuai.

In the past month Chinese state-affiliated media organisations have attempted to show Peng was fine by releasing videos and photos of her. But instead these efforts have transformed a #MeToo complaint into a diplomatic incident.

Multiple western governments including the US and Australia have called on Beijing to prove Peng is safe. The Biden administration said it was considering a “diplomatic boycott” of the Beijing Winter Olympics in February.

The WTA’s boycott decision on Wednesday marked a significant shift in how sports associations have dealt with China. In the past, organisations have rapidly backed down from rows with Beijing for fear of losing its lucrative market.

The WTA, which in the past decade has made huge investments in the Chinese market, has not held events in the country since the Covid pandemic. But in the 2019 season China hosted nine tournaments, including the season-ending WTA Finals, with a total of $30.4m (£22.6m) in prize money – a significant portion of the WTA’s revenues.

Mark Dreyer, the Beijing-based founder of China Sports Insider, said the WTA’s decision would put pressure on other associations, such as the men’s professional tennis tour, the ATP. “The WTA is winning the moral battle in the west, and it’s going to be quite hard for other organisations to do it differently.”

Tennis stars have praised the WTA’s decision to put human rights before profits. “I applaud Steve Simon and the WTA leadership for taking a strong stand on defending human rights in China and around the world,” said Billie Jean King, the American former world No 1. “The WTA is on the right side of history in supporting our players. This is another reason why women’s tennis is the leader in women’s sports.”

Novak Djokovic, the men’s No 1, said he fully supported the WTA’s stance, and said other organisations such as his Professional Tennis Players Association and the Association of Tennis Professionals were “asking for clarity on what is going on”.

“We don’t have enough information and I think it’s a very bold, very courageous stance from WTA,” Djokovic said.

The narrative from Beijing’s side, however, is rather different. In a tweet on Wednesday the editor of the Global Times, a hardline nationalist state-owned newspaper, criticised the WTA for “coercing Peng Shuai to support the west’s attack on Chinese system”.

Hu Xijin wrote: “They are depriving Peng Shuai’s freedom of expression, demanding that her description of her current situation must meet their expectation.”
