Elden Ring Speedrunner Easily Beats Main Bosses With One Hit

Elden Ring is full of hard bosses, many of whom have no problem quickly showing you the nearest gravesite if you’re lost, and defeating them is often a matter of slowly whittling away at their lengthy health bars until you breathe a huge sigh of relief as the words “Enemy Felled” finally appear. One player, however, wanted to dish it out to those bosses every bit as well as they do, and then some. So he beefed up his Tarnished to one-shot many of the game’s toughest adversaries, from Morgott to Radahn, among others.

BushyGames, a Twitch streamer and Elden Ring speedrunner, uploaded a nearly 50-minute video to YouTube on May 16. The video showed Bushy trying—and succeeding—at beating FromSoftware’s action-RPG by killing every main boss with a single hit. There were a couple of rules Bushy put in place before embarking on such a difficult task. For example, he could only perform one attack per enemy or per boss phase (for those bosses, such as Rannala, who have multiple phases, which makes it impossible to fully deplete their health bar with a single attack) and must avoid using the cheap beam spell Comet Azur unless he “absolutely has to to complete the challenge.” Otherwise, he gave himself free rein to use any item or technique available to aid him in his quest. That included stuff like buffs, of which Bushy used plenty to survive the hellish run.

After creating his Tarnished named One Punch Man, Bushy scoured the Lands Between for gear. He collected items like the Axe Talisman and Spiked Cracked Tear for increased charged attack damage. He gathered various smithing stones and weapons skills, such as the Ash of War: Determination, which powers up the strength of your next attack. He also cheesed the horse-riding Night’s Calvary boss by forcing it to jump off the bridge, all before nabbing his idolized weapon: the colossal strength-scaling Giant-Crusher hammer. Bushy leveled up here and there, too, but he didn’t spend as much time on those screens as he did just exploring the Lands Between for resources and slaying enemies for runes.

Things picked up once Bushy got the Giant-Crusher. He leveled the hammer up multiple times and fast-traveled around the map searching for higher quality materials—like advanced smithing stones to further strengthen his weapon—before testing his one-hit attack capabilities against his first real boss fight: the Deathbird in Liurnia of the Lakes. Bushy tried once, buffing himself with items like the HP-recovering consumable Bloodboil Aromatic and the defense-increasing spell Golden Vow, only to shave off about half of the boss’ health bar with his hammer’s single, mighty thwack. A failed second attempt was significantly better, with Deathbird somehow hanging on to the tiniest sliver of health after Bushy’s assault, but the third time was the charm.

After three hours of farming and leveling his hammer one more time, Bushy buffed up his Tarnished with the same items, walked up to the Deathbird, and killed the rotted thing in one blow. “Bang! Whoo,” Bushy exclaimed in excitement. Not gonna lie, I felt it, too. He repeated the process for every main boss, going from Margit, the Fell Omen to Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, performing a self-buffing ritual before starting each fight.

Not every encounter went as intended. Radahn, for example, forced him to swap out some inventory items to maximize his damage, opting for the Flame of Frenzy spell until he was better able to wield the Jellyfish Shield’s attack power-raising Contagious Fury skill. And the Fire Giant bullied him for, like, an hour. But after a bit of trial and error, Bushy one-shotted all of Elden Ring’s main bosses, or in the case of those with multiple phases, he wiped out each phase with a single hit. What made this even more impressive was that, because Bushy used buffing spells that also happened to inflict self-damage, such as the attack power-increasing skill Seppuku, he very often had 10% or less health during the fight. Talk about a glass cannon.

Bushy told Kotaku that while he only killed the bosses “necessary to beat the game,” he’s confident that every boss phase can be done in one hit. That said, he did call out some Elden Ring jerks who gave him a hard time.

“The final boss Radagon and Elden Beast were the most difficult to one-shot and I even had to break my self-imposed rule of no Comet Azur to properly one-shot Elden Beast,” Bushy said. “Some people commented that Comet Azur shouldn’t be considered a one-shot anyway since it is a series of hits rather than one instance of damage, but I disagree. The analogy that I give is a shotgun, it fires one shot but hits multiple times.”

All told, Bushy spent a little over 25 hours gathering, testing, and executing the full run. He said he learned a lot about Elden Ring from this and even picked up tips from the game’s community and commenters on his video.

“It was a fun run with lots of problem-solving, and I’m very surprised it was even possible in the first place,” Bushy said. “On top of that, after posting the video I received plenty of comments and messages that let me know of other items that could have helped or improved the build, those included Ancient Dragon’s Lightning Strike with a faith build, the Rusted Anchor greataxe and Zweihander colossal sword—both of these have thrusting attacks which enable another damage buff called ‘counter damage,’ which is inaccessible on any non-thrusting weapon—and the Marais Executioner’s Sword for its unique Ash of War that can output a ton of damage. I didn’t use any of these items in the run, but they are all options that can perform better in some circumstances compared to what I used.”

I guess if there’s any takeaway from Bushy’s run, maybe it would be this: In Elden Ring, the best way to win is to “output a ton of damage” in one hit.

Who knew? If you’re curious, here’s BushyGames’ final build:

  • Weapons: Giant Crusher, Lusat’s staff with Comet Azur (both of these eventually upgraded to max level)
  • Weapon buffs: Determination and Royal Knights Resolve
  • Body buffs: Exalted Flesh, Bloodboil Aromatic, Flame Grant Me Strength
  • Aura buffs: Golden Vow Ash of War, Golden Vow Incantation, Rallying Standard (Commander’s Standard)
  • Shield buffs: Contagious Fury (Jellyfish Shield)
  • Unique buffs: Faith-Knot Crystal Tear, Strength-Knot Crystal Tear, Spiked Cracked Tear, Magic-Shrouding Cracked Tear, Flame-Shrouding Cracked Tear, Terra Magica
  • Talismans: Radagon’s Soreseal, Starscourge Heirloom, Two Fingers Heirloom, Axe Talisman, Magic Scorpion Charm, Fire Scorpion Charm, Red-Feathered Branch Sword, Ritual Sword Talisman, Kindred of Rot Exultation, Lord of Blood’s Exultation.
  • Armor with special effects: Black Dumpling, White Mask, Mushroom Crown

Elden Ring: Speedrunner Beats the Game in Less Than 9 Minutes

An Elden Ring speedrunner has now beaten the game in less than nine minutes.

YouTube user Distortion2 has cut his time down to just 8 minutes and 56 seconds, primarily using the Zip glitch – which essentially allows players to teleport across different parts of the map.

Combined with other exploits that allow most of the game to be skipped, Distortion2 has shaved minutes from his time day after day since setting the first under-30 minute speedrun a month ago.

Several different speedrun styles already exist such as runs without taking damage, runs without dealing damage, and more complete playthroughs in which players beat all of Elden Ring’s major bosses.

Like Dark Souls and Bloodborne, players will likely find new ways to play and exploit Elden Ring for years to come, resulting in even more ridiculous speedruns down the line.

Just last week players discovered a way to make the infamous boss Starscourge Radahn defeat himself, for example, luring him to the water’s edge so that he splashes in and dies.

Elden Ring’s other bizarre secrets discovered so far include a pair of fancy underwear hidden away in the game files and a hidden wall that only opens after 50 hits.

In our 10/10 review, IGN said: “Elden Ring is a massive iteration on what FromSoftware began with the Souls series, bringing its relentlessly challenging combat to an incredible open world that gives us the freedom to choose our own path.”

Elden Ring Speedrunner Beats Game In 12 Minutes 37 Seconds

Image: FromSoftware

Yesterday, YouTuber and speedrunner MitChriz beat Elden Ring in just 12 minutes and 32 seconds, setting what appears to be a new record in the “any% unrestricted” speedrunning category for the game.

To pull this off, you probably already guessed that there were some shenanigans and trickery happening in the run. And you would be correct. MitChriz used an Elden Ring speedrunning trick called “zipping” to essentially teleport around the world. This saves a lot of time compared to running everywhere or even using your trusting, double-jumping horse.

Using this trick, MitChriz was able to bypass the Limgrave section of the game and then popped straight over to Liurnia, where they use a now accessible waygate to access a late-game area. Using the zipping trick, they then skip past all but one of the bosses and reach the final boss in record time. Using the zip trick they skip past that boss fight too and finish the game in under 13 minutes.

And here I remember last month when I thought beating Elden Ring in 37 minutes was fast.

You might be wondering: Wait…what is zipping? Well, it’s a speedrunning technique that has become more popular recently among runners focused on setting new record times in the any% unrestricted category for Elden Ring. In this particular speedrunning category, players aren’t required to complete all the steps, get all the runes or do anything else that is usually needed to progress through the game. The main goal in these types of runs is to just reach the end and get to the credits as fast as possible using any method and tricks you can.

And further, in the unrestricted category really wild and tricky methods like zipping—which requires a beefy PCare allowed.

Before someone gets angry at MitChriz for using glitches or tricks to beat the game, remember that this is just one type of speedrun category that exists for Elden Ring and that other players are out there setting times for runs that involve beating every boss or never taking damage, etc.

I now await someone beating Elden Ring in under 10 minutes.

Elden Ring speedrunner beats game in 12.5 minutes after fighting only one boss

There’s a new Elden Ring speedrunning world record, and it was accomplished using a popular exploit to skip past every boss in the game except one. Speedrunner Mitchriz was able to beat the game in an astounding 12 minutes and 32 seconds using the “zipping” technique, which allows players to teleport around the map in seconds.

Streamer Distortion2 previously used zipping to achieve a 19-minute run, and then just last night achieved a 14-minute run, setting a new world record. But today, Mitchriz took the crown with this incredible sub-13 minute run.

As PC Gamer (opens in new tab) reports, Mitchriz uses zips to skip the whole Limgrave section of the game and head straight to Liurnia, where they use a waypoint to access an area in the late game. In earlier speedruns, they would then need to beat a series of bosses before completing the game, but in this run Mitchriz was able to beat just one boss, Maliketh, before skipping the others and zipping to the final area of the game.

Mitchriz then positions their character in such a painfully specific way that they’re launched onto the steps in front of the last fog door in the game. From there, Mitchriz “mega zips” to the very edge of the map instead of walking through the door, which allows them to skip the final boss and trigger the end of the game.

“Absolutely crazy run,” Mitchriz said. “The zips were clean from the start to the finish, even if it did take a few tries to get the ‘mega-zip’ at the end. Really happy with this run, a big improvement over previous runs.

As incredible as the feat is, there’s no doubt we’ll see a faster run in the near future, but at some point speedrunners will reach the limit of what’s possible in this space. Until then, we can’t wait to see what these folks come up with to break the 10 minute mark.

It’s only a matter of time, after all.

Elden Ring Speedrunner Beats Open World RPG In Under 37 Minutes

Image: FromSoftware

Prolific and experienced Dark Souls speedrunner Distortion2 continues to set new speedrunning records in Elden Ring. He has now beaten Elden Ring in under 37 minutes, which could possibly be the new record for the fastest completion time.

In a video posted earlier today, Distortion2 was able to complete Elden Ring in just 36 minutes and 20 seconds. While the speedrunning community and categories around Elden Ring are still forming, it’s believed that this is the fastest “Any%” speedrun of the recently released RPG.

While it is impressive to beat such a large and often challenging game so quickly, what makes this even more impressive is that Distortion2 has been on a roll lately. Just a day ago he recorded what is believed to be the first sub-40 minute completion run of the game. And the day before that he beat the game in less than 50 minutes, again believed to be one of/if not the first person to do so.

Because this is an “Any%” run, Distorition2 isn’t required to complete all the steps, get all the runes or do anything else that is usually needed to progress through the game. The main goal in these types of runs is to just reach the end and get to the credits as fast as possible using any method and tricks you can.

With time, as the speedrunning community around Elden Ring forms and begins creating rules, categories, and documenting runs, we will likely see players beating the game while doing everything or while using no glitches. But for now, Distortion2’s runs are still impressive to watch, especially when you remember how many people need weeks to beat a game like Elden Ring.

Distortion2 streams every day and is always trying to improve his record, with a goal now of getting the overall time under 30 minutes. If you want to watch him live, check him out on Twitch.

In other Elden Ring speedrunning news, earlier this week a different runner on YouTube was able to complete Elden Ring in about two hours and did so without dying. Meanwhile, I’m over here spending two hours in most RPG character creation sections.

Random: Breath Of The Wild Speedrunner Completes 100% Run Without Taking Any Damage

We feel like we keep seeing more and more impressive feats achieved within The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild every week, but is this actually the most impressive one yet? Read on…

Towards the end of last month, Breath of the Wild “expert” joedun became the first player to ever complete the game 100% without taking any damage. Just take a moment to let that sink in – he took zero damage – to complete a full run in Nintendo’s latest Zelda game.

In saying this, he did get some assistance from a number of Breath of the Wild glitches – allowing him to bypass a lot of dangers (moon jumping) and speed up the overall process.

Speaking to Polygon, the Twitch streamer said it took months of failed attempts before getting this result – highlighting the fact that the most difficult part was “never giving up”.

“You see, I failed that run 100+ times, with 3 of those times being 30+ hours in. To keep pushing myself to not give up and not let the game beat me was definitely the hardest.”

The record for this run is set at 31 hours, 58 minutes and 9 seconds. The streamer now wants to try and complete the game without taking any damage or using any glitches at all.

You can see the full recap over on Twitch. How far into Breath of the Wild do you think you could get before taking damage? Leave a comment down below.
