Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 Is Apple’s Next M-Series Rival; Rumored Specs Include 12-Core CPU, 64GB LPDDR5X RAM, Wi-Fi 7, More

The latest specifications of the upcoming Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 from Qualcomm are extremely promising, and if the SoC performs as a proper Apple M-series SoC competitor, we will have some real competition in the market. Here are more details that we know you will be interested in reading about.

Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 will also give Windows-based notebooks the ability to gain cellular connectivity thanks to Qualcomm’s 5G modem, along with external GPU support

Earlier, we reported that Qualcomm was working on an unnamed SoC codenamed ‘Hamoa.’ Well, it turns out that @Za_Raczke, who previously talked about the 12-core SoC, now states that the name of the silicon will be Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4. Apparently, Qualcomm is working on multiple chipsets, but the one that is said to deliver the most performance is apparently touting eight performance cores and four power-efficiency ones.

However, he does not state if the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 will feature Qualcomm’s Oryon cores, which are custom solutions that will be made possible thanks to the company’s acquisition of Nuvia. Regardless, the information he shares sounds interesting on paper, with the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4’s performance cores being tested at a frequency of 3.40GHz, while the energy-efficient ones are running at 2.50GHz. It is unconfirmed if these clock speeds will remain the same when the silicon is running in commercial products, but we will find out in the future.

Coming to the system cache, the tipster says that each block of 4 cores has 12MB of shared L2 cache, with 8MB of L3 cache. Surprisingly, Qualcomm is not developing a new GPU for the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 because it is said to sport the Adreno 740, the same graphics processor running in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. While it is still a powerful GPU, the limitations might start to appear when running in Windows notebooks instead of smartphones.

Where the M2 Pro and M2 Max are limited to LPDDR5 RAM, the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 could provide LPDDR5X support up to 64GB, with an option to run that memory at a lower frequency of 4.20GHz, likely to prioritize battery life when necessary. Wi-Fi 7 and an external Snapdragon X65 5G modem are said to be included, along with discrete GPU support over 8 lanes of PCIe 4.0.

There are also 4 lanes (configurable as 2 x 2) of PCIe 4.0 for NVMe drives, with PCIe 3.0 lanes reserved for the Wi-Fi card and modem. If manufacturers wish to use UFS 4.0 onboard memory instead of PCIe, Qualcomm is also providing that option with the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 through a dedicated storage controller. It appears that the chipset maker is sprinting the extra mile because users will also get the opportunity to hook up high-resolution monitors, just like how they can do on the latest 2023 MacBook Pro models.

Not just this, but video encoding and decoding performance are also said to have improved considerably. New OnePlus 11 leak reveals more images, what’s in the box, and the phone’s key specs

The OnePlus 11 is set to be unveiled in China on January 4th with the international launch expected in India on February 7th. While we’ve already seen pictures of the device, the one and only Evan Blass has posted some fresh images of the phone on his Twitter page along with specs to peruse. Blass has been delivering reliable images and information about upcoming devices well before many of today’s tipsters even knew what a smartphone was.
According to the tweet, the OnePlus 11 will feature a 6.7-inch AMOLED curved display with a QHD+ resolution of 1440 x 3216. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC will be under the hood with the following configurations offered: 12GB of RAM with 256GB of storage, 16GB of RAM with 256GB of storage, and 16GB of RAM with 512GB of storage. The phones will employ the fastest LPDDR5X RAM chips with UFS 4.0 storage. OnePlus has spared no expense as far as this aspect of the phone is concerned.

Sony’s 50MP IMX890 sensor will drive the primary camera on the back of the phone. The array also includes a 48MP ultra-wide camera, and a 32MP telephoto lens delivering 2x optical zoom. The front-facing camera for selfies and video chats weighs in at 16MP. Keeping the lights on is a 5000mAh battery with a fast charging capability of 100W. The phone will have an IP54 rating protecting it from a limited amount of dust and water sprays from all directions. Do not submerge the phone on purpose.

The OnePlus 11 will be introduced in China with ColorOS 13.0 installed. The latter is based on Android 13. The handset comes in two colors, Green and Black, and it weighs 205 grams.

Blass’ leak also includes an image showing what will be inside the OnePlus 11 box. Besides the phone, there is a protective cover, a SIM tray pin, a manual, a charger (!), and a USB-C charging cable.

‘M2 Max’ Geekbench Scores Leak Online, Revealing Rumored Specs and Performance

Geekbench scores allegedly for the upcoming “M2 Max” chip have surfaced online, offering a closer look at the performance levels and specific details of the forthcoming Apple silicon processor.

The Geekbench results, first spotted on Twitter, are for a Mac configuration of with the ‌M2‌ Max chip, a 12-core CPU, and 96GB of memory. The Mac listed has an identifier “Mac14,6,” which could be upcoming MacBook Pros or the next-generation Mac Studio. Apple offers a maximum of 64GB of memory on the current 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, while the ‌Mac Studio‌ can be configured with up to 128GB of memory with the M1 Ultra.

According to the test, the ‌M2‌ Max chip scored 1,853 in single-core and 13,855 in multi-core. For comparison, the M1 Max chip in the Mac Studio scored 1,755 in single-core and 12,333 in multi-core. If the ‌M2‌ Max chip results are accurate, the performance increase will be relatively minor for the upcoming chip.

The ‌M2‌ chip, announced in June 2022, is based on an enhanced version of TSMC’s 5nm process. What fabrication process the upcoming ‌M2‌ Pro and ‌M2‌ Max chips will have is not entirely clear. While they could feature the same enhanced 5nm process as the standard ‌M2‌ chip, there are also rumors it could leapfrog to 3nm, offering significant performance and energy efficiency gains.

According to the results, the chip was tested on a Mac running macOS Ventura 13.2, which has yet to enter developer or public beta testing but is being worked on internally at Apple. The first Macs expected to feature the ‌M2‌ Pro and ‌M2‌ Max chips are rumored to be updated 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, with the ‌Mac Studio‌ to follow sometime next year. The updated MacBook Pros were initially rumored to launch in the October to November timeframe but are now expected to launch in early 2023.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra rumored release date, price, specs and more

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is assumed to be the top model of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S23 range, and the rumors we’ve heard so far seem to confirm this.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra offered a huge upgrade compared to previous Galaxy S Ultra phones, by combining the camera array of previous models with the built-in stylus of the Galaxy Note series. The Galaxy S23 Ultra seems like it’ll be building on this in a few ways, most notably with a main camera somehow stuffed with a rumored 200 megapixels and the traditional yearly chipset update for more performance and power efficiency.

There’s still several months to go until the new Samsung flagship phone takes to the stage, but below we’ve collected all the rumors (and one official statement) about the Galaxy S23 Ultra so far.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra possible release date and price

To get the basics out of the way first, we know that the Galaxy S Ultra model will return, as stated by Samsung boss T.M. Roh when talking about the end of the Galaxy Note series. Now the only question is when it’ll appear.

The smart guess would be January or February, the two months that Samsung’s unveiled its new Galaxy S phones each year for the past several years. Since we’ve already seen a new Samsung model receive certification in Korea, it seems like Samsung’s keeping to that timing.

It may be sooner than that though, as market sources think Samsung will move its launch date forward a few weeks to mid-January. This would hopefully stop users from buying new phones from other brands like Apple or Google, so Samsung’s thinking apparently goes.

As for the cost of this Ultra phone, we’d anticipate it’ll cost at least $1,200 again, as the current S22 Ultra does. We’d be happy to see a price drop though, especially since its closest rival, the iPhone 14 Pro Max, starts a little cheaper at $1,100.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra design and display

If the Galaxy S23 Ultra is changing as little as the rumors say, then we’ll likely see a near-identical design to the Galaxy S22 Ultra, with squared-off corners, a curved display and individually-embedded cameras on the back. That would also mean another embedded S Pen for your doodling needs, one of the most unique features of the S22 Ultra.

That’s not to say there are no possible changes. We’ve heard that the S23 Ultra may be slightly longer and wider than the S22 Ultra, although only by hundredths of millimeters, so you’re unlikely to notice.

Also, leaker Ice Universe has claimed that there will be a new display for the S23 Ultra. While it would be hard to improve on the super-bright, 6.8-inch QHD AMOLED panel and its fully variable LTPO 120Hz refresh rate, perhaps Samsung has an even brighter, or a more efficient, display ready to swap in as a welcome update.

Also, it’s possible that this model will also suffer from the thicker bezels (but no display size increase) rumored for the S23 regular.This could perhaps explain the slight body size increase, although since the normal S23 and S23 Plus have flat displays rather than curved ones, maybe it won’t apply to the Ultra.

But now the first leaked renders have appeared (as well as a matching case). OnLeaks working with SmartPrix put out a 360-degree video of the Galaxy S23 Ultra in black. Based on leaked CAD designs, the renders don’t look all that much different from the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

From all appearances, the Galaxy S23 Ultra will have some slightly more square edges than the Galaxy S22 Ultra. It looks like Samsung might keep the tried-and-true Galaxy Note-like design.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra cameras

We should still see four cameras on the back of the S23 Ultra, except with one major change. There will allegedly be a 200MP main camera, (claimed by multiple sources) even higher-res than the already high-res 108MP main camera on the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

What’s not rumored to change are the telephoto cameras, which will both have 10MP sensors like before according to one source, and presumably have the same 3x and 10x optical magnification, too.

Topping that off, we’d expect to see a 40MP selfie camera once again, embedded in the top center of the display. While only one of five total cameras seem to be getting a major upgrade, hopefully Samsung will have some new software enhancements or camera modes to show off at the launch that will help the S23 series claim a spot on our best camera phones page.

Galaxy S23 Ultra performance and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2

Samsung usually powers its Galaxy S phones with Qualcomm chips in the U.S., but its own Exynos chips elsewhere in the world. That would mean we’ll see what’s assumed to be called the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and Exynos 2300 at the heart of the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

The rumors can’t seem to decide on what’s happening though. Some have said we’ll see this mix of chips continue for the time being, while others have said Qualcomm will be suppling Snapdragon chips for S23 models all around the world.

We hope for the second scenario because Snapdragon Galaxy S phones have tended to offer superior performance to their Exynos-powered siblings, but chances are Samsung won’t want to give up on using its own silicon where it can.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra: battery and charging

To power the Galaxy S23 Ultra, Samsung is supposedly using the same 5,000 mAh battery as we saw in the Galaxy S22 Ultra. While some extra capacity would have been nice, this size of battery is par for the course when it comes to large Android phones, so let’s just hope Samsung can squeeze a bit more battery life out of the S23 Ultra. While the S22 Ultra had a decent result on our custom battery test, the iPhone 14 Pro Max lasted longer.

The rumors have forecast no charging speed change, at least for the standard S23. That will translate to at least 25W charging for the Galaxy S23 Ultra, and likely up to 45W if you buy the appropriate charger. The 45W charger was able to power up the S22 Ultra to 67% in half an hour, which is again good but not outstanding compared to the 65W and higher charging standards used by rivals like OnePlus.

 Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra: outlook

The Galaxy S23 series as a whole looks like a year of refinement rather than major developments, but the Galaxy S23 Ultra appears to be getting a bit more than its smaller brethren. We’re particularly interested in the rumored 200MP camera and how it could shake up the photo quality of Samsung’s most photography-focused phone, but we’ll also be curious as to how the new chipset will perform and impact things like battery life.
