Far-right MK says doctors could deny treatment on religious grounds, sparking uproar

Religious Zionism lawmaker Orit Strock, who is set to be a minister in the new Israeli government, said on Sunday that doctors should be allowed to refuse to provide treatments that contravene their religious faith, as long as another doctor is willing to provide the same treatment.

Strock’s comments were denounced as racist and discriminatory by numerous politicians from the outgoing coalition, while incoming prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu distanced himself from her position. Netanyahu also denied that his coalition would allow a law to this effect to pass, although nascent coalition agreements reportedly state that the current law against such discrimination will be amended.

Chair of the Israel Medical Association Prof. Zion Hagay insisted that doctors in Israel would defy any attempt to allow the use of discriminatory practices in the treatment of patients.

“If a doctor is asked to give any type of treatment to someone that violates his religious faith, if there is another doctor who can do it then you can’t force them to provide treatment,” Strock told Kan public radio.

“Anti-discrimination laws are just and right when they create a just, equal, open and inclusive society,” said Strock, who is slated to become the minister for National Projects in the new government, with authority over the Department of Jewish Culture — hitherto part of the Education Ministry. “But there is a certain deviation in which religious faith is trampled upon and we want to amend this.”

Strock was speaking with regard to treatments where a doctor may have some religious objection, such as fertility treatment for unmarried women, within the general context of her party’s proposed legislation to allow businesses or private enterprises to refuse service on the grounds of religious conscience.

According to the Kan state broadcaster, a clause in the coalition agreement between Likud and Religious Zionism stipulates that legislation will be passed by the new government to allow business owners to refuse service to customers if doing so violates their religious beliefs.

Netanyahu denied, however, that the coalition deal provided for such a law.

“MK Orit Strock’s words are unacceptable to me and my colleagues in Likud. The coalition agreements do not allow for discrimination against LGBT people or for harming the right of any citizen in Israel to receive service. Likud will guarantee that there will be no harm to LGBT people or any Israeli citizen,” Netanyahu said in a statement.

Despite Netanyahu’s denial, Kan journalist Michael Shemesh tweeted an image of the clause in question of the coalition agreement, which states that the law against discrimination will be amended “in a way that will prevent injury to a private business which refrains from providing service or a product due to religious faith, on condition that it is a service or product which is not unique and for which an alternative can be found nearby and for a similar price.”

According to Kan, the clause appears in every coalition agreement between the Likud and the other parties of the incoming government, although only the deal between Likud and Agudat Yisrael, one half of the United Torah Judaism faction, has been formally signed so far.

The law as it stands forbids discrimination by those providing public services or products on the basis of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and other similar considerations, and anyone doing so is liable to be fined.

According to Strock, the legislation she and Religious Zionism are advancing would allow such providers to refuse service if it they feel it violates their religious faith, as long as there is another similar service within reasonable geographic range.

Strock gave by way of example a situation in which a Christian wanted to hold a Christmas party with a Christmas tree in a venue owned by a religious Jew.

“I assume an observant Jewish person won’t want to do this because it contravenes his religious faith… Jews gave up their lives to not do such things throughout history. The law must not treat Jewish law as something of lesser value,” she said.

“The State of Israel is the state of the Jewish people, a people that gave up its life for its religious faith. It is unacceptable that, having established a country after 2,000 years of exile and of laying down their lives for the Torah, this country will call religious faith ‘discrimination.’”

Backing up Strock, fellow Religious Zionism MK Simcha Rothman made similar comments on Sunday, asserting that if a hotel wanted to refuse service to gay people on religious grounds it would be entitled to do so.

“A business owner can do whatever they like in his business. He created the business and he doesn’t owe anyone anything,” Rothman told Kan.

“The law states that a business cannot discriminate for a whole variety of reasons. This bill [proposed by his party] seeks not to abolish the general prohibition on discrimination but says that when there is a religious obstacle for someone to do something, it will be permissible for him to withhold service — rather than force him to do something that contravenes his beliefs,” said Rothman.

Asked if it would be permissible for a Jew to refuse service to Arabs on the basis that he believed Arabs should not live in the Land of Israel, Rothman declined to answer. He also refused to say what mechanism would be put into place to define whether or not refusal of service was based on a legitimate religious belief.

Strock’s and Rothman’s comments were castigated by numerous members of the incoming opposition and described as racist, homophobic and discriminatory.

Outgoing Prime Minister Yair Lapid denounced Strock’s remarks and blamed Netanyahu for the rise of such sentiments, saying he was “leading us to a benighted state [ruled by] Jewish law.”

Labor MK Gilad Kariv tweeted, “We should not be surprised by Orit Struck’s racist comments. It is her life’s teaching. We should be outraged by the equanimity of Likud MKs in light of these disgraceful and dangerous comments.”

Yesh Atid MK Ram Ben Barak said he did not believe Netanyahu’s denials and warned that the country was moving in a direction that would allow for widespread discrimination.

“We have lived through periods in which there were signs saying ‘no entry to Jews,’ and now we see these laws that state that business owners can decide whom they want to sell to. There will be grocery stores that will say ‘no entry to women’ and tomorrow there will be another that says ‘no entry to Arabs,” Ben Barak predicted.

Hagay, chairman of the Israel Medical Association, insisted that “doctors in Israel are committed to the doctor’s oath and will not allow any person or any law to change this fact,” in response to Strock’s comments.

“We will not allow foreign or political considerations to be introduced between doctors and patients. The health system has always been an island of sanity, a symbol of coexistence, a place in which Jews and Arabs work shoulder to shoulder, with the value of equality a guiding light for them,” tweeted Hagay.

“The Hebrew doctor’s oath says explicitly, ‘You shall help a sick person since they are sick, be they a foreigner or a non-Jew, and be they a citizen, despicable or honorable.’ And in Maimonides’ doctors’ prayer it is written ‘I will only see the human in a sick person.’ That is how it always was and how it will be forever.”

The chair of the Association for LGBTQ Equality in Israel, Hila Peer, also condemned the remarks, describing them and the proposed law as “un-Jewish” and disgraceful.

“MKs Strock and Rothman want to mark out LGBT people so that we’ll remain in our homes as in the dark days of humanity. We will not agree to this in any way,” said Peer, calling on Netanyahu to oppose such legislation.

Responding to the criticism, Struck said, “No one intends to discriminate against LGBT people because of their identity or what they identify with. Not in medical treatment, or any other manner. LGBT people are human beings deserving of respect and love like anyone else.”

She insisted, however, that if there was “medical treatment that contravenes Jewish law, a religiously observant doctor will not be forced to give it, regardless of the identity of the patient.”

UK approves first coal mine in decades, sparking anger among environmentalists as energy costs soar

The United Kingdom this week approved its first new coal mine in 30 years, provoking anger among environmentalists who said the move is a step back for the country’s ambitions toward clean renewable energy.

The decision on the mine in the Cumbria area of northwest England came hours after the Conservative-led government reversed a ban on building new onshore wind farms in Britain. That was viewed by some opponents as a cynical attempt to offset criticism of the mine decision.

Supporters, meanwhile, say the mine will bring much-needed jobs to an area hard hit by the closures of its mines and factories in recent decades.

The mine decision comes as many homes and businesses have seen energy bills double or, in some cases, triple this past year. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February has also sent gas prices soaring in Britain, prompting the government to bolster its domestic energy supply.

Wind produced more than a quarter of the U.K.’s electricity in 2021. But the Conservative government has since 2015 opposed new wind turbines on land because of local opposition. A majority of Britain’s wind farms are at sea.

While running for the Conservative Party’s leadership in the summer, now-Prime Minister Sunak pledged to keep the ban. But amid growing calls for change from Conservative lawmakers, the government said Tuesday it could allow wind farms in areas where communities support them, pending a “technical consultation.”

“Decisions on onshore wind sites will continue to be made at a local level as these are best made by local representatives who know their areas best and are democratically accountable to the local community,” the government said in a statement.

Caroline Lucas, Britain’s only Green Party lawmaker, said ending the ban on onshore wind was welcome, though “the devil is in the detail.”

“But if this is meant to ‘buy off’ giving the green light to the Cumbria coal mine later this week, it would be totally & utterly shameless,” she wrote on Twitter before approval for the mine was announced.

Jessica Simpson hits back at ‘haters’ with impassioned rendition of her song after sparking concern

Jessica Simpson appeared to respond to some of the concern her fans expressed over her recent ‘strange’ Pottery Barn video where she appeared to slur her words.

The Take My Breath Away singer, 42, shared a new video to her Instagram on Sunday, where she sang along to her 2020 song ‘Party of One’ passionately reciting the lyrics ‘I don’t give a f**k about you.’

The star also wrote a lengthy caption, declaring that she’s been alcohol-free for five years while detailing how she blocks out the ‘destructive noise’ of people’s comments and judgements.

Hitting back: Jessica Simpson appeared to respond to some of the concern her fans expressed over her recent ‘strange’ Pottery Barn video where she appeared to slur her words

She also belted out the chorus of the poignant ballad: ‘Look in the mirror/ Straight in my eyes/ Tell myself I’m not broken/ Just ’cause I cry/ It’s a love song/ Party of one.’

‘I’m not weak ’cause I don’t want to fight/ I am more than my body/ More than my wealth/ I am more than these demons/ Holding me down/ It’s a love song/ Party of one/ I know it’s bad for my health to hate myself.’

Simpson began her caption writing: ‘I needed to be in my studio today because this is where I ground myself and heal. As much as I have learned to block out destructive noise…peoples’ comments and judgements can still hurt deeply with their incessant nagging “you will never be good enough,”’ she began her caption.

I am capable of pretty much anything I care enough about to put my mind to. I am present. I am deeply inspired. I am determined. I am honest. I care about other people.’

She went on: ‘After grounding myself just now with my voice and the lyrics across my heart, I feel compassion for the opinionated hate that some people can so effortlessly just blurt out with such intensity on social media or in the media in general.’

‘We all have our days of wanting to be, look, do, and feel better. Nobody is alone with that feelin’ that I can promise you. I woke up at the same time anxious and insecure but also also angry and defensive — like some of you.’

‘I know what works for me and that is to let go and simply sing while lookin directly inside the mirror, straight in my eyes to really see and understand myself. I can connect with my heartbeat. I am stable and strong. I am home.’

The star revealed to Extra’s Terri Seymour that what really helped her slim down was changing her menu.

‘I went to a nutritionist, and I needed to get my eating habits right,’ she said. When asked if she feels ‘healthy,’ the siren said: ‘I absolutely feel healthy.’

She added, ‘I don’t know. I feel like my old self before I had children and all the hormones going wild.

‘I feel younger, actually. I have a lot more energy and yeah, I get to wear all the clothes that are in storage that I saved for Maxwell and Birdie. Maybe Birdie will outgrow them because Maxwell has already outgrown me!’

For kids: Jessica held Birdie while promoting her collection on Instagram

Cute:  The toddler has an adorable fox-shaped storage bin, perfect for putting away toys, laundry, blankets

She works out more often: her trainer is Harley Pasternak.

And she follows Harley’s Body Reset Diet plan, which includes three meals a day to ‘keep the metabolism humming’ as well as smoothies and snacks.

Junk food is a rarity but sometimes she cheats with sweets like powdered donuts.

Terri asked, ‘Why are people obsessed with your weight and how you look? Have you gotten used to it?’

‘Oh, gosh, no,’ she said. ‘Would any woman?’

And she added sometimes the insults get to her.

Looking good! In September, Simpson addressed her 100lb weight loss, which she lost in 2019 after having her three children; Maxwell, Ace and Birdie (seen this summer)

Jessica said, ‘I’ve been criticized, and it hurts, but I’ve been every weight and I’ve been proud of it. I decided, “Okay, everybody is going to talk about my weight all the time, I might as well make money off of it and turn it into a business of selling clothes and acceptance.”‘

As far as always being known as Daisy Dukes from her film Dukes Of Hazzard, she said she is fine with it.

‘Lynda Carter warned me on the set of Dukes of Hazzard. She was like, “I will always be Wonder Woman and compared to Wonder Woman, and that’s what you’re doing here as Daisy Duke. Just know the words ‘Daisy Duke’ will follow you for the rest of your career,”‘ said Simpson.

Small changes: The star recently revealed to Extra’s Terri Seymour that what really helped her slim down was changing her menu; (L) pictured 2022, (R) pictured 2012

The star talked her fashion empire too; she took control of the Jessica Simpson Collection last year.

Simpson said it feels inspiring to control her company.

‘It feels powerful, but in a really humble way because we worked so hard to get to this ownership and, like, after 18 years of having a collection, to actually own it and to have put all of my, liquidate my investments, put all my faith in getting this just for myself and for my children one day, it was a moment that, I still sometimes don’t believe it is real.’

She went on, ‘I still feel like I have someone to answer to. And then I’m like, “Okay, it’s just us 10 girls.” We got this, but everything is growing. We’re having our biggest quarter that we’ve had right now in, like, eight years, so my mom and I knew we could do it, and we’re doing it and I just, you know, I feel very blessed.’

She IS Daisy Duke: Terri asked, ‘Why are people obsessed with your weight and how you look? Have you gotten used to it?’ ‘Oh, gosh, no,’ she said. ‘Would any woman?’

Putin orders partial military call-up, sparking protests

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a partial mobilization of reservists Wednesday to bolster his forces in Ukraine, a deeply unpopular move that sparked rare protests across the country and led to almost 1,200 arrests.

The risky order follows humiliating setbacks for Putin’s troops nearly seven months after they invaded Ukraine. The first such call-up in Russia since World War II heightened tensions with Ukraine’s Western backers, who derided it as an act of weakness and desperation.

The move also sent some Russians scrambling to buy plane tickets to flee the country.

In his 14-minute nationally televised address, Putin also warned the West that he isn’t bluffing about using everything at his disposal to protect Russia — an apparent reference to his nuclear arsenal. He has previously rebuked NATO countries for supplying weapons to Ukraine.

Confronted with steep battlefield losses, expanding front lines and a conflict that has raged longer than expected, the Kremlin has struggled to replenish its troops in Ukraine, reportedly even resorting to widespread recruitment in prisons.

The total number of reservists to be called up could be as high as 300,000, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said. However, Putin’s decree authorizing the partial mobilization, which took effect immediately, offered few details, raising suspicions that the draft could be broadened at any moment. Notably, one clause was kept secret.

Despite Russia’s harsh laws against criticizing the military and the war, protesters outraged by the mobilization overcame their fear of arrest to stage protests in cities across the country. Nearly 1,200 Russians were arrested in anti-war demonstrations in cities including Moscow and St. Petersburg, according to the independent Russian human rights group OVD-Info.

Associated Press journalists in Moscow witnessed at least a dozen arrests in the first 15 minutes of a nighttime protest in the capital, with police in heavy body armor tackling demonstrators in front of shops, hauling some away as they chanted, “No to war!”

“I’m not afraid of anything. The most valuable thing that they can take from us is the life of our children. I won’t give them life of my child,” said one Muscovite, who declined to give her name.

Asked whether protesting would help, she said: “It won’t help, but it’s my civic duty to express my stance. No to war!”

In Yekaterinburg, Russia’s fourth-largest city, police hauled onto buses some of the 40 protesters who were detained at an anti-war rally. One woman in a wheelchair shouted, referring to the Russian president: “Goddamn bald-headed ‘nut job’. He’s going to drop a bomb on us, and we’re all still protecting him. I’ve said enough.”

The Vesna opposition movement called for protests, saying: “Thousands of Russian men — our fathers, brothers and husbands — will be thrown into the meat grinder of the war. What will they be dying for? What will mothers and children be crying for?”

The Moscow prosecutor’s office warned that organizing or participating in protests could lead to up to 15 years in prison. Authorities have issued similar warnings ahead of other protests. Wednesday’s were the first nationwide anti-war protests since the fighting began in late February.

Other Russians responded by trying to leave the country, and flights out quickly became booked.

In Armenia, Sergey arrived with his 17-year-old son, saying they had prepared for such a scenario. Another Russian, Valery, said his wife’s family lives in Kyiv, and mobilization is out of the question for him “just for the moral aspect alone.” Both men declined to give their last names.

The state communication watchdog Roskomnadzor warned media that access to their websites would be blocked for transmitting “false information” about the mobilization.

Residents in Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv, appeared despondent about the mobilization as they watched emergency workers clear debris from Russian rocket attacks on two apartment buildings.

“You just don’t know what to expect from him,” said Kharkiv resident Olena Milevska, 66. “But you do understand that it’s something personal for him.”

In calling for the mobilization, Putin cited the length of the front line, which he said exceeds 1,000 kilometers (more than 620 miles). He also said Russia is effectively fighting the combined military might of Western countries.

Western leaders said the mobilization was in response to Russia’s recent battlefield losses.

President Joe Biden told the U.N. General Assembly that Putin’s new nuclear threats showed “reckless disregard” for Russia’s responsibilities as a signer of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

Hours later, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged world leaders at the gathering to strip Russia of its vote in international institutions and its U.N. Security Council veto, saying that aggressors need to be punished and isolated.

Speaking by video, Zelenskyy said his forces “can return the Ukrainian flag to our entire territory. We can do it with the force of arms. But we need time.”

Putin did not attend the meeting.

Following an emergency meeting of European Union foreign ministers Wednesday night, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell promised more sanctions on Russia over its escalation of the Ukraine conflict. He said he was certain there would be “unanimous agreement” for sanctioning both Russia’s economy and individual Russians.

“It’s clear that Putin is trying to destroy Ukraine. Hes trying to destroy the country by different means since he’s failing militarily,” Borrell said.

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny said the mobilization means the war “is getting worse, deepening, and Putin is trying to involve as many people as possible. … It’s being done just to let one person keep his grip on personal power.”

The partial mobilization order came two days before Russian-controlled regions in eastern and southern Ukraine plan to hold referendums on becoming part of Russia — a move that could allow Moscow to escalate the war. The votes start Friday in the Luhansk, Kherson and partly Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk regions.

Foreign leaders are already calling the votes illegitimate and nonbinding. Zelenskyy said they were a “sham” and “noise” to distract the public.

Michael Kofman, head of Russian studies at the CNA think tank in Washington, said Putin has staked his regime on the war, and that annexation “is a point of no return,” as is mobilization “to an extent.”

“Partial mobilization affects everybody. And everybody in Russia understands … that they could be the next wave, and this is only the first wave,” Kofman said.

Shoigu, Russia’s defense minister, said only some of those with relevant combat and service experience will be mobilized. He said about 25 million people fit that criteria, but only about 1% of them will be mobilized.

It wasn’t clear how many years of combat experience or what level of training soldiers must have to be mobilized. Another clause in the decree prevents most professional soldiers from terminating their contracts until after the partial mobilization.

Putin’s mobilization gambit could backfire by making the war unpopular at home and hurting his own standing. It also concedes Russia’s underlying military shortcomings.

A Ukrainian counteroffensive this month seized the military initiative from Russia and captured large areas in Ukraine from Russian forces.

The Russian mobilization is unlikely to produce any consequences on the battlefield for months because of a lack of training facilities and equipment.

Russian political analyst Dmitry Oreshkin said it seemed “an act of desperation.”

“People will evade this mobilization in every possible way, bribe their way out of this mobilization, leave the country,” he said.

He described the announcement as “a huge personal blow to Russian citizens, who until recently (took part in the hostilities) with pleasure, sitting on their couches, (watching) TV. And now the war has come into their home.”

In his address, Putin accused the West of engaging in “nuclear blackmail” and cited alleged “statements of some high-ranking representatives of the leading NATO states about the possibility of using nuclear weapons of mass destruction against Russia.”

He did not elaborate.

“When the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, to protect Russia and our people, we will certainly use all the means at our disposal,” Putin said.

In other developments, relatives of two U.S. military veterans who disappeared while fighting Russia with Ukrainian forces said they had been released after about three months in captivity. They were part of a swap arranged by Saudi Arabia of 10 prisoners from the U.S., Morocco, the United Kingdom, Sweden and Croatia.

And in another release, Ukraine announced early Thursday that it had won freedom from Russian custody of 215 Ukrainian and foreign citizens, including fighters who had defended a besieged steel plant in the city of Mariupol for months. Zelenskyy posted a video showing an official briefing him on the freeing of the citizens, in exchange for pro-Russian opposition leader Viktor Medvedchuk and 55 others held by Ukraine.
