Police: 2 dead, 1 injured in Upper Southampton triple shooting Friday night

UPPER SOUTHAMPTON, Pennsylvania (WPVI) — Police in Bucks County are investigating a shooting that left two people dead and one injured.

Investigators say it happened in the parking lot of Steam Pub in Upper Southampton Township at the intersection of Second Street Pike and Knowles Avenue around 11:30 Friday night.

Police say they got multiple 911 calls about a shooting and one of the callers identified himself as the shooter.

The Bucks County coroner identified the victims as 28-year-old Ray Farrell and 30-year-old Steve Panebianco.

Friends and family of the victims say they need answers about what happened.

“I’m going to miss watching them grow, watching them grow to the men that they are because it’s been non-stop,” said Michael Maranon, a friend of the victims.

Fighting back tears, Maranon spoke about the two victims who he said are some of his best friends.

He said Farrell has a young son and Panebianco was celebrating getting a new job.

“Ray was a terrific father, family man, an honest worker. Steve — the same thing,” said Justin Jordan, Farrell’s brother. “We were actually going to stay in last night and go to his son’s soccer game this morning. That was the plan.”

Police say a third person, a 24-year-old, was also shot and taken to the hospital.

Friends and family came back to the scene Saturday in disbelief. Police have not said what led to the shooting, but are hoping surveillance video will help.

“That’s going to be part of the investigation. We are thoroughly looking through all the locations that would have possible video surveillance,” said Chief Dominic Varacallo from Upper Southampton Police Department.

People who loved Farrell and Panebianco said they need more answers.

“I have a nephew now that doesn’t have a father. He has parents now that don’t have a son. That shouldn’t be like that,” said Maranon

Investigators say the shooter has been identified and is cooperating. Police have not arrested or charged the person at this time.

Inside a $150 million Hamptons summer home for sale

An oceanfront estate in Southampton, listed at $150 million, stands as the priciest home for sale in the Hamptons — and is struggling to move off the market.

The compound, called La Dune, is likely to be used as a summer home and draws from a tiny pool of buyers, probably billionaires, who could afford to foot the bill. Even in the Hamptons, $100-million-plus sales are few and far between.

La Dune, named after the sandy dune it sits behind, spans about four acres, across two adjacent lots with two homes, two swimming pools and a sunken tennis court.

It hasn’t been easy to find a buyer for the sprawling compound, which includes a classic Hamptons-style shingled main residence, originally built more than 100 years ago, and a second home on the adjacent lot, built in the early 2000s.

The pair of beachfront homes with two pools and a tennis court in the foreground of the photo are the La Dune estate.

Liam Gifkins

“This house is the furthest thing from a tear down, but if the house wasn’t here, this lot alone, each one of them would be worth $50 million,” listing agent Shawn Elliott of Nest Seekers told CNBC.

And Elliott promises La Dune’s price isn’t just designed to grab headlines.

“I believe this is, 100%, a very realistic price point to attract buyers in this market place,” said Elliott, who co-lists the home with Geoff Gifkins.

The estate is situated on 400-plus feet of super-prime beachfront along Gin Lane, sometimes referred to as “billionaire’s beach.” It’s one of the most exclusive strips of white sand in the world.

“In real estate we always know it’s location, location, location, that’s not a cliche,” Elliot said. “You are truly on the 50 yard line of nothing but wealth.”

Back in 2016 La Dune’s owner, art magazine publisher and collector Louise Blouin, put the estate on the market with Sotheby’s International at an asking price of $140 million. At the time, there were no takers.

Over the years, the residence has been listed as a summer rental. This year a one-month stay would set you back $1.2 million.

The main home’s third-floor primary suite delivers impressive ocean views.

Since 2016, the home’s been on and off the market, and Blouin has reportedly faced a potential foreclosure and bankruptcy court proceedings to maintain control of the compound.

She re-listed La Dune in August with a new brokerage firm and raised the ask to $150 million.

If the team at Nest Seekers gets anywhere near what their client wants for the compound, it will break an all-time record in the Hamptons.

According to public records analyzed by Jonathan Miller, president of the real estate appraisal and consulting company Miller Samuel, only five compounds have ever sold for more than $100 million in the Hamptons.

The all-time record is still held by the 2014 sale of three separate but contiguous lots spanning 16 acres located at 60-64 Further Lane in East Hampton that traded for $137 million.

The two most recent 9-figure deals, according to public records, were both in Water Mill, a hamlet also in the Town of Southampton about two miles east of La Dune.

The 42-acre Fordune estate sold in 2021 for a record-breaking $105 million.

CNBC

First came the mega-sale of a 42-acre, 20,000-square-foot oceanfront estate known as Fordune, located at 90 Jule Pond Drive. The former Ford family estate was originally listed for $175 million in 2017 and sat on the market for almost four years before selling for $105 million in 2021, a 40% discount but still an all-time record for single-lot properties in the Hamptons.

In 2022, an even bigger sale eclipsed that one in the quiet off-market purchase of 70 Cobb Road, recorded at $118 million. That compound which sits on a creek, not the ocean, was comprised of four contiguous lots spanning about 21 acres. The sale included two homes that together delivered more than 32,000 square feet of living space. The mega-deal remains the Hamptons’ second-highest sale of all time.

The Atlantic ocean offers a stunning backdrop for a pair of mansions for sale on Gin Lane in Southampton.

Here’s a closer look at the latest compound vying for a spot among the short list of summer homes that have sold for over $100 million:

The La Dune compound spans four acres with 21,000 square feet of living space across two homes, according to the listing.

The four-story main residence, located at 366 Gin Lane, is more than 11,000 square feet.

The second residence at the La Dune estate includes its own swimming pool.

The three-story second home at 376 Gin Lane, which owner Blouin refers to as the “family home,” is more than 9,600 square feet.

The pair of mansions includes a total of 19 bedrooms and 16 baths.

The family kitchen in the main residence is one of several kitchens across the estate.

There are several kitchens on the estate including a large staff kitchen for catering events on the first floor of the main house. There’s also a more modest family kitchen, one floor above it.

The main home’s swimming pool is flanked by two bars and white collumns.

Liam Gifkins

Blouin told CNBC she’s selling her Hamptons home in part because she and her children spend most of their time in Europe — not in Southampton.

According to public records, property taxes across both lots that form the La Dune compound total almost $130,000 per year.

Yes, it is going to be one of those “Wow, Man Utrd really are terrible” afternoons! Fulham double their lead against the Bees, who thrashed Manchester United 4-0 last weekend, and it’s the new man Joao Palhinha with the goal. A lovely header, says Paul Merson on the old Soccer Saturday. Fulham could be 4-0 up by now.

Is there much point in paying attention to the Premier League table after two matches? Disallowed goal! Crystal Palace 1-1 Aston Villa

Goal! Fulham 2-0 Brentford (Palhinha)

Personally I never thought Rondon was as bad as people make out. Even if not scoring (if, I hear you cry?!) he’s a handful.

Mitrovic hits the onion bag for Fulham against Brentford, and looks to have put them 2-0 up, but he’s offside.

“Yes, Everton is dominating Forest so far,” emails Mary Waltz (watching, I believe, from across the pond). “But just like the first two fixtures we have no clue when we approach the box. The fact that we are having to rely on a past-his-prime Rondon for scoring is not a positive sign for Toffee fans.”

It’s a fair point, Mary.

Tottenham fans, if you want to see your team atop the embryonic Premier League table, check this out.

“Afternoon Luke,” emails Simon McMahon. “Even at this stage of the season, Dundee United could do with three points at home to St. Mirren today after heavy losses to AZ Alkmaar and Hearts. It’s not quite reached Manchester United levels of mismanagement yet, and we don’t have to play Liverpool on Monday, but still. Get a grip United.

“Today’s other games are Motherwell v Livingston, Ross County v Kilmarnock and St. Johnstone v Aberdeen, while Hibs and Rangers drew 2-2 in the early kick off, and Celtic host Hearts tomorrow.”

Hey, I already mentioned Rangers! Thanks for the email Simon.

Nine-man Rangers coughed up a late equaliser in a 2-2 Scottish Premiership draw at Hibs. Here’s the report:

The former Forest defender Michael Dawson, on Sky Sports, tells us that Everton have started in the ascendancy at Goodison Park.

Goal! Crystal Palace 0-1 Aston Villa (Watkins)

A tidy finish by the some-time England international and Gerrard’s Villa lead in south London! It came from a speculative ball forward by Tyrone Mings.

Goal! Fulham 1-0 Brentford (Decordova-Reid)

Is this going to be one of those ‘Wow, Manchester United must be really bad’ afternoons? Decordova-Reid, or Reid as some have it, has a tap-in to put Fulham in front after the ball comes back off the woodwork.

Here we go then. 3pm is literally seconds away. Let’s do this.

Jonathan Liew witnessed Spurs 1-0 Wolves in north London, and here is his match report:

I just searched for the oldest Nottingham Forest photos in our picture library. Safe to say they don’t go back as far as 1892 and the first-ever league match at Goodison. But here’s Stan Collymore celebrating a goal against Palace at Selhurst Park in 1995. I was at that game, fact fans. The Collymore goal was a typical mix of audacity, skill, pace and power. Bryan Roy scored the first … Iain Dowie got the Palace goal!

You’ve just got time, before the kick-offs at 3pm, to read Jonathan Liew’s latest, on Marcus Rashford:

Brendan Rodgers, on Sky Sports, is asked about the absences of Tielemans and Fofana: “One is a change in system and two … I mentioned in the week, coming into a Premier League game maybe not in the right frame of mind [is not what Rodgers wants’] … and that’s the reason for the change.”

Everton vs Forest at Goodison Park afternoon is a repeat of the first ever competitive match at Goodison, 130 years ago on 3rd September 1892,” emails Ed Shardlow.

“My distant cousin, Forest “inside left” Horace Pike scored the first goal. Here’s how the match report described it:

“The visitors showed good play, being very quick on the ball, and Jardine was in trouble, Pike making a gallant attempt to lower his colours. Only a corner, however, resulted, but from this Pike had his revenge for he deftly placed a goal.”

“The game, which was also Forest’s first ever game in the top division, ended 2-2.”

Thanks for the email Ed. Yes, it’s good to see Forest back in the top flight, and Everton v Forest is a fixture that just feels right, somehow.

Everton v Nottingham Forest teams

Salomon Rondon starts up front for Everton against Forest, with Tom Davies also coming into midfield. The injured Abdoulaye Doucoure drops out, along with Dwight McNeil. Up in Scotland, Rangers are beating Hibs 2-1 away in the Premiership, inside the final 20 minutes, but have just had John Lundstram sent off.

With regard to Chelsea’s pursuit of the Everton forward Anthony Gordon – Frank Lampard wants to keep him, but admits that he may not still be at Goodison Park come the end of the transfer window:

Harry Kane has just headed Spurs into the lead against Wolves, thanks largely to a crafty flick-on at the near post by Ivan Perisic. That’s 250 Tottenham goals for Kane.

Barcelona have still not been authorised to register French defender Jules Koundé as a player, one of their marquee summer signings, as the club works to comply with LaLiga’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules, manager Xavi said on Saturday.

“At the moment, we don’t know anything. We are on stand-by,” Xavi saidtheir trip to San Sebastian to face Real Sociedad on Sunday. Barça need to comply with La Liga’s salary cap rules to register Koundé, and the potential sales of strikers Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Memphis Depay could make this possible.

“We are waiting. Koundé is a great leader and a great player. Hopefully he shows it soon – tomorrow, if he can play. He has trained very well, I see him in good spirits, but we need to sell players to be able to register him.”

Koundé missed out on Barça’s season debut against Rayo Vallecano after La Liga prevented the club from registering him alongside his fellow summer signings Franck Kessie, Andreas Christensen, Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha.

“The transfer market ends on August 31 and we don’t know what will happen,” Xavi said. “Auba and Memphis are still here, so tomorrow we will use them. But the priority is to register Koundé.” (Reuters)

And here is Will Unwin on Erik ten Hag and the fire-fighting he is having to do so early in his reign at Manchester United – with Liverpool looming large on Monday night:

“Trying to adjust to a new set of tactical and stylistic rules is hard enough for footballers at the best of times but when low on confidence it is almost impossible.”

As it stands, the highly underwhelming encounter between Tottenham and Wolves is scoreless at half time. The second half, in fact, has just this second kicked off.

While we await team news for the 3pm kick-offs, why not read Barney Ronay on the kerfuffle surrounding Graeme Souness and his ‘man’s game’ comments last week?

“I think what he was trying to express, poorly, was his enthusiasm for letting the game flow, a lust for extreme physicality, and his own obvious nostalgia for the world of his youth, a place where Wulfstan is always the noblest and bravest of all warriors, still out there defending the bridge from the Vikings.”

Preamble

Is there much point in paying attention to the Premier League table after two matches? Qatar World Cup 2022 start date to change as FIFA allows hosts to play first

FIFA is set to move the start date of the World Cup one day earlier so that host nation Qatar can play first, The Athletic understands.

Previously, the tournament was scheduled to begin on Monday November 21, with Senegal playing the Netherlands.

However, it is understood that Qatar want to play first, as has become customary for the host nation.

Their game against Ecuador is now slated to move forward to Sunday November 20. It will kick-off at 7pm (2pm ET).

England’s opening game, against Iran on November 21, will be played that day as planned.

GO DEEPER

Why the World Cup 2022 in Qatar is controversial

The decision still needs to be approved by the Bureau of the FIFA Council, made up of president Gianni Infantino and the leaders of each continental confederation (UEFA, CONMEBOL, CONCACAF, CAF, AFC, and OFC).

Agreement is expected to be granted, meaning the World Cup will now take place from November 20 to December 18.

The host country has featured in the opening game of every World Cup since 2006, before which the defending champion usually featured in the first match.

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar — controversial for the reasons outlined in this article — is the first winter World Cup to take place in the northern hemisphere.

The Premier League will break for more than a month after the weekend of November 12/13 before beginning again after the final on December 18. The top-flight season will resume on December 26 for the traditional Boxing Day round of fixtures.

Tottenham Hotspur opened the season with a slow start, many knowing that’s how the games go as a Spurs fan. Then the opening goal by Southampton’s James Ward Prowse connected to put the Saints up 1-0.

Oh no, here we go.

Normally it would be a dire fight to get one goal and grab a point to open the season. Not under Antonio Conte. Spurs pulled up their socks and tightened their boots and put on a performance for the home fans and supporters around the world.

Four goals were scored with two coming in each half and some huge contributions by the wing-backs. Yes, the starting XI was the same as the closing matches of last season that pushed the team to the Champions League. Some injuries and others not being fully fit in Conte’s eyes forced him to have Ryan Sessegnon and Emerson Royal to run up the flanks.

They delivered.

Sessegnon scored the opening goal and Royal added an assist (and our best friend own goal) to be the deciding factor in the game.

Eric Dier scored for the other Spurs goal from a defender, his first in over three years (not including his preseason rocket).

Here are a few game notes that came to mind while watching Spurs route to victory

  • Sessegnon is big, in a good way of course. He had great pace and Kyle Walker-Peters was bouncing off the 21-year-old. His goal was great to see and his second one, called offside, was brilliant with the pattern looking to be practiced on kickoffs.
  • After going down 1-0, Spurs took over on both ends of the pitch. They pressed highly with their fitness levels showing off and the defense put in big tackles to stop anything for Southampton.
  • It is frustrating to see Royal take one too many touches inside the box. He is fun to watch and in the second half, he seemed to notice the open spaces with his pass to Dejan Kulusevski for the fourth and final goal.
  • Son Heung-min and Harry Kane were off and normally that means doom for Spurs. Not anymore.
  • Three new faces made their debuts for the club with Ivan Perisic getting 30 plus minutes and Yves Bissouma and Clement Lenglet getting under 10 minutes. Perisic had the most time to create chances and boy can he deliver crosses with ease. The other two didn’t have much to do with the game in the bag, even though Bissouma teed one off in the final seconds.
  • Lucas Moura and Matt Doherty came in during the quadruple subs and didn’t show much but that’s ok.

Game week one is done and Tottenham Hotspur is a force under Conte

Ten Hag faces tough task, Man City kick off at West Ham

The fixture schedule for the 2022-23 Premier League season was released on Thursday, with champions Manchester City starting at West Ham and the Erik ten Hag era at Manchester United beginning with a home match against Brighton, kicking off a tough-looking run to start his new job.

City clinched the 2021-22 title in extraordinary fashion on the final day, coming from 2-0 down to beat Aston Villa 3-2 and edge Liverpool in a thrilling race. Pep Guardiola’s side are vying to become the first Premier League team to win the trophy three seasons in a row since Manchester United in 2009 and their campaign starts at the London Stadium, before hosting newly promoted Bournemouth.

The first meeting between last season’s top two comes on Oct. 15 when Guardiola’s men visit Anfield, with the corresponding fixture set for April 1. Jurgen Klopp’s side kick off their campaign against newly promoted Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Manchester United endured a nightmare 2021-22 season, finishing with their lowest points tally of the Premier League era. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked midway through the campaign and Ralf Rangnick took over on an interim basis, only to leave the club this summer before the end of his two-year advisory role.

Ten Hag is the latest man trying to stop the rot at Old Trafford and he has a difficult start to life at United, with a home match against Liverpool the club’s third game of the season, on Aug. 20. In that fixture last season, Solskjaer’s side suffered one of the most humiliating defeats in their history when Liverpool won 5-0.

United’s first 10 matches of the campaign also include trips to Leicester and Everton as well as the visit of Arsenal. The first Manchester derby of the season comes on Oct. 1 at the Etihad, with the Old Trafford fixture set for Jan. 14.

The 2022-23 season kicks off with Crystal Palace vs. Arsenal on Friday Aug. 5 and then a further programme of seven matches on the Saturday, including Frank Lampard’s Everton hosting former club Chelsea.

Antonio Conte’s Tottenham beat Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal to the remaining Champions League place last season and they open with a home match against Southampton, with the first North London derby of the season at the Emirates on Oct. 1.

The Premier League is in its 30th year since its inception in 1992 and the new season takes a different shape to previous campaigns, with the league on hiatus in November because of the World Cup in Qatar. The final league fixtures before the tournament take place will be on Nov. 12-13 and the English Football Association submitted a formal request to the Premier League asking for matches between the “Big Six” not to be scheduled on that weekend before the World Cup starts, sources told ESPN.

There are no Big Six contests on that weekend, with City hosting Brentford, Liverpool at home to Southampton, Chelsea at Newcastle, Tottenham hosting Leeds, Arsenal travelling to Wolves and United facing Fulham at Craven Cottage.

The World Cup final is on Dec. 18 and the Premier League returns on Dec. 26 with a full programme of fixtures which includes Liverpool at Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa, Leeds vs. Manchester City, and a London derby between Arsenal and West Ham. The following round of fixtures will not be until New Year’s Eve this term, to ease the workload on teams following the World Cup.

Elsewhere on the opening day, Nottingham Forest, back in the top flight for the first time in 23 years, begin with a trip to St James’ Park to face Newcastle, while fellow new boys Bournemouth host Aston Villa.

The fixtues are subject to change, owing to matches being moved for television purposes and how teams might progress in domestic and European cup competitions.
