Amazon Prime Is Adding 10 More Games To Its December Freebies

Screenshot: Arkane / Kotaku

The attention-grabbing headline for this story, of games coming with Amazon Prime membership this holiday, would be “Ten Free Games!” But when the other nine are so old they’re starting to peel at the edges, that’d be pretty anticlimactic. The true news here is the utterly fantastic Dishonored 2 is yours, gratis, if you’re member of the Bezos Fan Club come December 27. And it will join an already decent crop for this month.

Let’s start at the start…of the month. To celebrate the birth of our lord, Santa, Amazon has already released a bunch of freebs for Prime members. These include the truly wonderful Brothers: A Tale Of Two Sons, psychedelic indie platformer Spinch, and the original (but updated for modern systems) Quake. And now, because ‘tis the season of corporate gestures, ten more are to be belatedly added to the list for your Chrimbo-break. And one of them is from this century!

Dishonored 2 was a stunning game from Arkane, back in 2016, and still very much holds up today. You don’t want to trust the negativity some sites met it with, because it was a corker. If you’re a Prime member and haven’t played it, this’d be a daft opportunity to miss.

Beyond that in the list, um, do you like SNK games from the mid-90s? Here’s everything coming from December 27 to January 3:

  • Dishonored 2
  • Metal Slug
  • Metal Slug X
  • Metal Slug 3
  • Real Bout Fatal Fury
  • The King of Fighters 2003
  • The Last Blade
  • The Last Blade 2
  • Twinkle Star Sprites
  • SNK 40th Anniversary Collection

They join this bunch that was added at the start of the month:

  • Quake
  • Rose Riddle 2: Werewolf Shadow
  • The Amazing American Circus
  • Banners of Ruin
  • Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
  • Spinch
  • Desert Child
  • Doors: Paradox

I know, what was I doing failing to highlight Rose Riddle 2: Werewolf Shadow and 1996’s scrolling shooter, Twinkle Star Sprites?

You can add these games to your Prime account by clicking here. If you want to smash the system, and stick it to Jeffrey Bezos, you can get them if you sign up for the free Prime 30 days offer doodah, add the games, cancel it, and then keep the games forever. Ha ha ha! That’ll show’em.

A New Fatal Fury / Garou Fighting Game Is Coming From SNK

Image: SNK

During the EVO 2022 festivities over the weekend publisher SNK released a short video announcing an all-new Fatal Fury game, which given the amount of time since the last one felt both like a huge surprise but also something of an inevitability.

Here’s the clip, which over 30 seconds manages to show…a single piece of art:

Here’s a bigger, less animated version of the piece:

Image: SNK

So, a new Fatal Fury/Garou game, which means this is either a successor or direct sequel (it’s hard to tell from a single piece of art!) to 1999’s Garou: Mark of the Wolves, which was a big departure for the series at the time since it introduced a whole range of new characters and redesigned Terry Bogard, the only existing one to return.

Unbelievably, Garou was the last main Fatal Fury game released, which means it has been over 20 years since we last saw Terry and company in the limelight in their own series (Fatal Fury characters have, of course, been appearing in countless other games, from Super Smash Bros. to the dating game King of Fighters for Girls).

What this game might look like is anyone’s guess, since this announcement—based around a single image, and without any other accompanying information—is about as brief as you’re every going to get from a major publisher, and suggests this game is years away from release.

One piece of news found on the image itself, though, and helpfully zoomed in on during the trailer, was the signature of Aki Senno, aka Tonko, who has worked on-and-off with SNK for 25 years years, having been an artist on the Last Blade, King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown and Metal Slug series.

She’s perhaps best known, though, for her work on the original Garou—released in 1999 in arcades but again in 2000 on Neo Geo and 2001 on the Dreamcast—so getting her back onboard for this game is a nice treat for long-time SNK fighting game fans.

EVO 2022: SNK Announces Development of New Fatal Fury Game

On stage at EVO 2022, SNK announced that a new entry in the long-dormant Fatal Fury/Garou series is in development. It will be the first entry in the series since 1999’s Garou: Mark of the Wolves. No release window or platforms were named, as the announcement was only paired with a short teaser trailer and a single piece of artwork.

Currently, SNK is only referring to the game as “New Fatal Fury/Garou”, but it does appear to be a follow-up to Mark of the Wolves, as the teaser trailer ends with the reveal of Rock Howard, the protaganist of that title.

The short teaser trailer gives us three mysterious hints of what to expect in the game’s story, including, “The City of Legend Still Breathes”, “Hungry Wolves Back on the Prowl”, and “A New Destiny Hidden In Darkness”. Along with the reveal of Rock, two silhouettes were shown in the background during the trailer. These two characters appear to be Billy Kane, a recurring character throughout the series, and Kain R. Heinlein, the final boss of Garou: Mark of the Wolves.

Also known as the Garou series, the Fatal Fury franchise began in 1991 with the release of Fatal Fury: King of Fighters on the Neo Geo. The series continued on the Neo Geo through the 1990s, until Garou: Mark of the Wolves launched in late 1999. The series came to a halt after that entry, meaning this newly-announced title will be the franchise’s first in over 20 years.

Even though the series has been dormant for over two decades, many of its characters have lived on through SNK’s King of Fighters series, which combines characters from Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, and more. Characters such as Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard, and Joe Higashi are staples in the KOF series. Rock Howard, Geese Howard, and more have been added to KOF XV as DLC characters.

Crossplay for King of Fighters 15, rollback for Samurai Shodown, and more announced by SNK at Evo

During their Evo panel today, SNK shared a handful of exciting announcements for both King of Fighters 15 as well as Samurai Shodown.

For King of Fighters this includes both short and long term DLC information, such as the release date for the recently revealed Team Awakened Orochi characters, and for SamSho it’s all about netcode.

Developers took to the stage to offer a few details and footage on how the three upcoming Team Awakened Orochi fighters, alternate versions of Shermie, Yashiro, and Chris, will play. They also offered a release date for the upcoming team: August 8.

The panel also noted that they’re working on cross-platform play for KOF15, but that it will not be ready to roll out until some time in 2023. Currently Sony console users can play with one another, but not with Microsoft users. This should be changing in the coming months, however.

Evo’s biggest reveals tend to happen on finals day, and SNK shared that they haven’t shown everything for this weekend just yet. Though we’re definitely excited to get our hands on Team Awakened Orochi in just three days, we’ll soon have yet another new team to look forward to as there’s another reveal slated for this Sunday.

Finally, another season of DLC is confirmed for King of Fighters 15 with additional information also slated to roll out on Sunday.

Samurai Shodown, which released back in 2019, will be getting rollback netcode for online play on almost all platforms. Developers are aiming for the spring of 2023 for this update, and will be available on all platforms save for the Nintendo Switch (due to technical limitations, according to the devs).

You can view the panel via the Twitch archive video here. It begins at the 4:40:10 mark and lasts for just over 30 minutes.
