Kentucky vs. Kansas score, takeaways: Jayhawks snap three-game losing streak with road win in blue-blood clash

No. 9 Kansas snapped its three-game losing streak in one of college basketball’s toughest venues as the Jayhawks took an early punch from Kentucky and held the Wildcats at bay for the rest of the way in a 77-68 win Saturday at Rupp Arena. Jalen Wilson led the Jayhawks with 22 points and Kansas dominated Kentucky on the offensive glass to end the Wildcats’ winning streak at four games and avenge last season’s 80-62 home loss to the Wildcats.

The game was the marquee showdown of the final SEC/Big 12 Challenge, and it delivered with both teams playing well offensively in a battle of the sport’s all-time winningest programs. Kentucky jumped out to an early 11-6 lead, but Kansas weathered the storm and never trailed again after the 9:35 mark of the first half. With the win, KU avoided its first-ever four-game losing streak under 20th-year coach Bill Self.

Oscar Tshiebwe led Kansas with 18 points and nine rebounds, but the Jayhawks negated his impact on the offensive glass by finishing with an 11-0 edge in second-chance points. Kentucky entered the game ranked No. 5 nationally in offensive rebounds per game at 14 while Kansas ranked No. 145 in the same category at 10.7 per game.

With the Jayhawks relying on an undersized center in KJ Adams Jr. and the Wildcats boasting one of the game’s top rebounder in Tshiebwe, it seemed UK would have an obvious advantage on the glass. Instead, it was Kansas that dominated in that regard while picking up a much-needed victory. Adams finished with 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting while Kevin McCullar Jr. played through injury to finish with 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Jayhawks.

Wilson makes case for national player of year

This marked Wilson’s 12th game of 20 or more points this season as the redshirt junior continued to make his case for national player of the year consideration. The 6-foot-8 forward made 9 of 18 shots from the floor and came up with huge shots in the second half as the Jayhawks answered every Kentucky run. After the Wildcats closed within 51-50 at the 11:55 mark, Wilson promptly drilled a 3-pointer. He then made all three of his shot attempts in the final seven minutes, including a dagger of a jump shot with 1:52 remaining that put KU ahead 75-68.

Purdue center Zach Edey will be difficult to overcome in the national player of the year race, but Wilson continues to produce huge performances against quality opponents for a Kansas team with legitimate aspirations of repeating as national champions.

Kansas gets help from unexpected source

When KJ Adams left the game after picking up his second foul with 7:58 left in the first half, Kansas turned to backup center Zuby Ejiofor. But when Ejiofor left the game less than a minute later with an injury, it forced Self to go deeper into his bench than he likely expected. He turned to freshman center Ernest Udeh Jr., who entered averaging just 6.9 minutes in only 14 appearances this season.

Udeh had appeared in just two games this month but he gave the Jayhawks 12 important minutes, matching his most time on the court in any game since mid-November. Kansas outscored Kentucky by six with Udeh on the floor as he finished with four points on 2-of-2 shooting and pulled down a couple of rebounds while brushing with Tshiebwe on the interior.

Poor shooting bites Kentucky

After a Quad 4 home loss to South Carolina on Jan. 10 dropped Kentucky to 1-3, the Wildcats clearly turned a corner during a four-game winning streak over the last two weeks. However, the Wildcats made just 25.7% of their 3-pointers during that stretch, and the run of poor outside shooting finally caught up with them against Kansas.

Kentucky hit just 2 of 13 shots from beyond the arc with Cason Wallace responsible for both makes. CJ Fredrick and Antonio Reeves — a pair of transfers lauded for their perimeter shooting — combined to go 0 for 8 from deep. The poor shooting is a new development for the Wildcats, who made 35.4% of their 3-pointers as a team in the season’s first 16 games. If Kentucky is going to put the Kansas loss behind it quickly and build off the progress it made since the loss to the Gamecocks, it will need to find better shooting from somewhere. Wallace is doing his part, but getting Reeves and Fredrick going is going to be essential to this team’s long-term success.

John Legend is every inch the proud dad as he holds newborn daughter Esti in an adorable snap

John Legend appeared absolutely besotted with his newborn baby girl in a snap shared to his Instagram on Wednesday.

The Ordinary People crooner, 44 — who welcomed Esti Maxine Stephens with wife Chrissy Teigen, 37, on January 13 — held the infant in his arms with a broad smile on his face.

‘Our new love,’ the Grammys-Award winning musician — who also shares daughter Luna, six, and son Miles, four, with Teigen — captioned the heartwarming photo.

The singer — who’s been married to Teigen since 2013 — looked cozy in the snap, wearing a white and black knitted turtleneck.

Meanwhile little Esti was clad in a pink onesie.

His 15.1M followers were charmed by the father and daughter duo, with one calling Esti his ‘twin.’

Another fan wrote, ‘Literally it’s been five minutes and already she looks just like you dude.’

Meanwhile SNL star Keenan Thompson simply left five red-heart emojis.

The day prior his wife shared the first close-up snap of her bouncing baby girl’s face.

The model – who has been documenting her post partum recovery on social media – took to Instagram on Tuesday afternoon to share an adorable photo of her new daughter.

Baby joy: The proud parents originally announced her gender by sharing a sweet snap showing the baby being cuddled by her older siblings: daughter Luna, six, and son Miles, four

The newborn looked cute while wrapped up in a grey blanket as she rested her head onto her own arm while Chrissy cradled her.

Chrissy captioned the snap to her 40.5million followers: ‘look at u out here lookin like a baby.’

The proud parents also previously posted a sweet snap showing the baby being cuddled by her older siblings.

Sharing the baby’s name, the post read: ‘She’s here! Esti Maxine Stephens – the house is bustling and our family could not be happier.

‘Daddy sheds nightly tears of joy seeing Luna and Miles so full of love, and I am learning you still need diapers with a c section!? We are in bliss. Thank you for all the love and well wishes – we feel it all!’

The A-list dad has also been spending plenty of quality time with the couple’s older children, and recently took them to their elementary school’s Lunar New Year Party on Friday.

Legend posted an adorable picture of him holding hands with Miles and Luna as they were dressed in traditional clothing.

Legend first shared the news while performing at a private concert last Friday night, telling the crowd that he and his wife welcomed ‘the little baby this morning.’

‘What a blessed day,’ the singer said, adding that although he ‘didn’t get a lot of sleep’ he felt ‘energized’ after being by spending ‘a lot of time’ by Chrissy’s side at the hospital.

Healing: Chrissy touted the benefits of a postpartum tummy wrap to Instagram on Friday, exactly one week after giving birth to her and John’s baby girl

Bumping along! Teigen – who’s been married to Legend since 2013 – documented her latest pregnancy on social media with plenty of bump updates

Chrissy announced she was expecting on Instagram back in August, posting photos of her blossoming baby bump.

The happy news came nearly two years after she and John lost their son Jack 20 weeks into her pregnancy. She later revealed that her late son’s passing was the result of a life-saving abortion, not a miscarriage as she originally stated.

She explained that she made the ‘difficult decision’ to terminate the pregnancy after coming to terms with the fact that she nor Jack would likely survive.

‘Let’s just call it what it was: It was an abortion. An abortion to save my life for a baby that had absolutely no chance. And to be honest, I never, ever put that together until, actually, a few months ago,’ confessed Chrissy, according to THR.

Eagles-Giants snap count analysis: A new WR3 for the playoffs?

The official snap counts from the Philadelphia Eagles’ Divisional Round playoff win over the New York Giants are in. Let’s take a look and run through some analysis.

  • Dallas Goedert tied DeVonta Smith to lead skill players in snap count percentage. Goedert caught all five of his targets (extremely efficient, per usual) for 58 yards and a touchdown while DeVonta caught six of his 10 for 61 yards and a touchdown.
  • Pretty impressive that Lane Johnson was able to play the entire game prior to resting for three garbage time snaps. Dude is tough as heck.
  • Landon Dickerson missed a couple snaps at one point after getting banged up. Andre Dillard briefly replaced him at left guard before Dickerson was able to return.
  • A.J. Brown ranked second in targets only behind DeVonta … but only had three catches for 22 yards. He would’ve had a touchdown if Jalen Hurts hadn’t overthrown him in the end zone. Brown seemed frustrated that he got banged up on that play but the buzz is that he’s going to be OK.
  • Jack Stoll played his highest snap count percentage since Week 15. A bit more 12 personnel in this game.
  • Kenneth Gainwell played his third-highest snap count percentage thisseason. It was a career night for him with 12 carries for 112 yards and a touchdown. An unexpected but welcomed development.
  • Zach Pascal played his eighth-highest snap count percentage this season. This was the first game where he outsnapped Quez Watkins. Was this decision matchup-related or does it speak to the coaching staff losing trust in Quez after some late season struggles? Perhaps a mixture of both? We’ll see if Pascal continues to be WR3.
  • For the first time since Week 1, Quez did not even see a target. Pascal, meanwhile, saw one that resulted in a four-yard catch.
  • You knew the Eagles were going to get Boston Scott a touchdown against the Giants.
  • Cam Jurgens and Jack Driscoll saw a few garbage time snaps. Jurgens’ shotgun snap was a bit high (but well handled) on the touchdown run by Gainwell.
  • Gardner Minshew didn’t get to attempt a pass but he logged the first playoff snaps of his career. Cool to be able to pull your starters in a playoff game.

  • This was a relatively lighter workload for the defense. By contrast, the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive starters had to play as many as 61 snaps on Sunday night.
  • How about an undrafted rookie free agent out of Middle Tennessee leading the Eagles’ defense in snaps played in a playoff game?
  • This is just the second time this season where Marcus Epps did not play the entire game. He only missed 10 regular season snaps. Nice to be able to get him a little rest near the end of this one.
  • Haason Reddick was a beast. He tied for the team lead in tackles with five in additions to posting 1.5 sacks, one TFL, and three quarterback hits. All that on just 36 snaps. Efficient.
  • Josh Sweat also posted 1.5 sacks.
  • Jordan Davis played more snaps than Linval Joseph for the first time since the latter joined Philly’s roster. Interesting.
  • Robert Quinn logged a tackle but he’s still looking for his first Eagles sack.
  • Brandon Graham only played 12 snaps but had one sack and one TFL.
  • K’Von Wallace was effective in limited playing time with three total tackles, one pass defensed, and one quarterback hit. He’s gotten better as the season has gone along.
  • Josh Jobe put a huge hit on Richie James late in the game. Nice little moment for the UDFA CB, who only saw 12 defensive snaps in the regular season.

  • Jake Elliott scored eight points by going 5/5 on extra points and making his sole field goal attempt, a 30-yarder.
  • Brett Kern bounced back in this game with a long of 53 and all three of his punts downed inside the 20-yard line.
  • Britain Covey didn’t return any punts. Not the worst thing to see him be a fair catch machine.

INACTIVE: Avonte Maddox, Ian Book, Trey Sermon, Josh Sills, Kyron Johnson, Anthony Harris

  • Maddox was seen without a walking boot on Saturday night. Maybe he’ll be able to return for the NFC Championship Game? If not, he should be back if the Eagles make the Super Bowl.
  • The Eagles temporarily elevated Harris only to keep him inactive, seemingly so he could get a game check. Doing a solid for the veteran safety.

UK’s National Grid to pay people to use less power amid cold snap

LONDON, Jan 23 (Reuters) – Britain’s National Grid (NG.L) said it would pay customers to use less power on Monday evening and that it had asked for three coal-powered generators to be warmed up in case they are needed as the country faces a snap of cold weather.

The group said that it would activate a new scheme called the Demand Flexibility Service where customers get incentives if they agree to use less power during crunch periods.

The service, which has been trialled but not run in a live situation before, would run from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, it said, adding that the move did not mean electricity supplies were at risk and advised people not to worry.

The measures were announced in order to “ensure that everyone gets the electricity they need,” Craig Dyke, Head of National Control at National Grid ESO, told BBC Radio on Monday, adding that 26 suppliers had signed up for the scheme.

Below freezing temperatures have been recorded across much of the UK in recent days with the national weather service, the Met Office, last week issuing severe weather warnings for snow and ice.

National Grid’s Dyke said consumers could make small changes to make money by reducing their energy usage, such as delaying cooking or putting on the washing machine until after 6 p.m.

National Grid said in December that over a million British households had signed up to the scheme, which is one of its strategies to help prevent power cuts.

The announcement about the coal-powered generators did not mean they would definitely be used, it said in a separate statement.

Coal-powered generators were last put on stand-by in December when temperatures dropped and demand for energy rose, but they were not needed on that occasion.
