WWE SmackDown results, recap, grades: Edge humiliates Roman Reigns and the Usos

Friday night was the final time WWE SmackDown will be held from inside the ThunderDome, with WWE returning to touring with live fans beginning with next week’s SmackDown. Friday’s show focused on the story that has been the highlight of the ThunderDome era: the tale of Roman Reigns and The Usos.

Reigns spent the show waiting for the inevitable callout of Money in the Bank opponent Edge. When the callout did happen, the Usos were by his side, but that doesn’t mean the night ended on a positive note for the universal champion.

CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from the ThunderDome inside Yuengling Center in Tampa.

Edge humiliates Roman Reigns and the Usos

At the top of the show, Jimmy Uso was looking for Roman Reigns after Reings left Uso to a beating at the hands of Edge last week. Paul Heyman vowed that Uso would receive Reigns’ full attention. Reigns was out to the ring shortly after for a promo, explaining that Edge’s success in nearly beating him at WrestleMania was a result of being distracted by family drama involving the Usos. After Jimmy came to the ring, Jey Uso also made his return, saying all three men needed to get on the same page, leading Reigns to embrace both men.

Edge announced his intention to end the show by going to the ring and calling out Reigns, challenging his manhood if he needed help from the Usos dealing with that. When he executed that plan, Reigns and the Usos were shown watching on a monitor in the back before Reigns stood and told the Usos to stay while he handled things on his own. Reigns did begin his walk to the ring alone, but the Usos made the decision to walk out and join him for backup. Reigns entered the ring and began brawling with Edge. As the Usos went to enter the ring, Rey and Dominik Mysterio ran in to lay out the Usos with chairs. The Usos were able tos top Reigns from taking a spear, but were taken out by a Mysterio 619 before Edge hit Jey with a spear before ending the show by locking him in a crossface with the bottom post of a steel chair, vowing to take Reigns’ title in one week at Money in the Bank as Reigns was forced to look on from the top of the ramp, offering no help to his cousins.

It’s difficult to ignore the fact that Jimmy Uso was arrested for yet another DUI in the past week and WWE apparently chose the storyline over pushing him to get help he appears to need for this repeated issue. Setting that aside and just focusing on the content of the show, this has been a solid build to the match at Money in the Bank and continues the story of the uneven nature of the relationship between Reigns and his cousins. Edge has been presented in a strong way, as expected, and the upcoming match should be an exciting one. Grade: B+

What else happened on WWE SmackDown?

  • Shinsuke Nakamura def. Baron Corbin via pinfall with a Kinshasa in a Money in the Bank qualifier.
  • Shotzi Blackheart & Tegan Nox def. Tamina & Natalya via pinfall when Blackheart hit Natalya with a senton from the top rope. Blackheart and Nox made a surprise debut to beat the women’s tag champions in non-title action.
  • Sonya Deville announced that Carmella will challenge Bianca Belair for the SmackDown women’s title next week. The decision was made after Bayley was injured. Rather than changing opponents for Money in the Bank, Deville said Belair will defend her title as SmackDown returns to live crowds two days before the pay-per-view. Liv Morgan was given Carmella’s spot in the Money in the Bank ladder match.
  • Seth Rollins def. Cesaro via pinfall with a stomp in a Money in the Bank qualifier. Cesaro was busted open during the match, bleeding profusely from his forehead. Things tilted Rollins’ way at that point before Rollins hit the stomp to advance to Money in the Bank.

The tension between Edge, Daniel Bryan and Universal champion Roman Reigns intensified on the penultimate SmackDown before WrestleMania 37 Friday night on SmackDown as WWE delivered the latest build to the Triple Threat main event of this year’s Showcase of the Immortals.

The latest developments between the blue brand’s top dog and his challengers headlined a show that also featured an appearance by YouTube celebrity Logan Paul and the latest in the rivalry between Bianca Belair and SmackDown women’s champion Sasha Banks.

What went down, who emerged with momentum on their side, and what did it mean for the brand heading into the biggest show of the year?

Find out with this recap of the April 2 broadcast.

2021 Royal Rumble winner Edge kicked off this week’s show, discussing the “chaos” that has ensued over the last few weeks before thanking Daniel Bryan for awakening in him the Rated R Superstar, “the guy who does whatever he has to do.”

He said his WrestleMania opponents don’t understand the ramifications of what they’ve done, nor does Adam Pearce. He admitted to snapping, to “waking the hell up.” He is a Hall of Famer, an Ultimate Opportunist, and The Rated R Superstar. He is what they aspire to be, he exclaimed.

He ended the promo and headed up the ramp.

    B

    Analysis

As Edge exited the arena, he looked almost relieved, as if a giant weight had been lifted off his chest.

    It’s not particularly surprising, either.

He has always been at this most comfortable as a heel and now is no different. His promo on this show, announcing the re-emergence of The Rated R Superstar, was the best he has cut since this latest return and sets the stage for him to cheat and steal his way to the Universal Championship come April 11.

Of course, his whole story arc is a lot like Batista’s in 2014, which saw the former world champion return, only to be overshadowed by Bryan. It will be interesting to see if his return to the grand stage features the same result or if he can thwart the surging leader of the YES! Movement and Tribal Chief to capture the top prize on SmackDown.

Ahead of next week’s special WrestleMania edition of SmackDown, Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode will defend the blue brand tag team titles against The Street Profits, Alpha Academy, and Rey and Dominik Mysterio in a Fatal 4-Way Match.

This week, Ziggler and Roode teamed with Chad Gable and Otis to battle the Mysterios, Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins in a big eight-man tag team match.

After an energetic sequence to start, the match came back from the commercial break with Dawkins a ball of fire. A clubbing clothesline by Otis halted his momentum and allowed the heels to take control of the match.

Dawkins finally created separation and tagged Ford into the match. The former tag champ exploded into the match and took the fight to the opposition. The action broke down, the Mysterios taking the fight to the champions Ziggler and Roode.

Back in the ring, Gable and Otis teamed up to put an end to Ford’s onslaught, the latter finishing him off with a flying splash from the middle rope.

Backstage, Paul Heyman approached Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville about a hold-harmless agreement for Jey Uso so that he will not be held accountable for what he does to Daniel Bryan later tonight. Deville agreed with it, to the dismay of Pearce.

    Result

Alpha Academy, Ziggler and Roode defeated Street Profits and the Mysterios

    Grade

    C+

    Analysis

There was little in the way of narrative or real flow to this one as half of it took place during the commercial break. The action that there was, though, was explosive and highlighted what has been a solid division over the last two months.

Gable and Otis appear to be the hottest team in the division entering next week’s title match, but this feels very much like an opportunity for WWE to book Rey and Dominik to make history and become the first father-son duo to capture tag team gold.

The company does, after all, like to pat its own back when it comes to producing history-making events.

Corey Graves conducted an in-ring promo with Cesaro and Seth Rollins ahead of their WrestleMania match next Saturday night.

Rollins insisted he was unshakable, attempting to no-sell the effects of last week’s humiliating backstage swing courtesy of Cesaro. The Swiss Superman responded, teasing his opponent with mentions of the swing.

“He may be unshakable but he damn sure isn’t unswingable,” Cesaro said.

Rollins threatened to end Cesaro before WrestleMania, to which his opponent dared him to “take a swing.”

The segment ended with Rollins retreating and, thus, saving face.

    Grade

    D

    Analysis

Cesaro is over, only of the most interesting Superstars ahead of WrestleMania. The surest way to kill his momentum is to book promos like this one, full of cheesy “swing” lines and no real substance.

We know nothing more or less about Cesaro than we did prior to this promo, except for his penchant for puns that elementary students wouldn’t find funny.

Rollins did his best to deliver a money promo but this just did not click.

Natalya, seconded by partner Tamina, squared off with women’s tag team champion Shayna Baszler, accompanied by Nia Jax and Reginald.

Before the match could really get started, The Queen of Harts countered a small package rollup and scored the pinfall victory.

After the match, the tag champs beat Natalya down before The Riott Squad made the save. Mandy Rose and Dana Brooke joined the fray, followed by Naomi and Lana. Eventually, Tamina joined Nattie for a Hart Attack on Lana before standing tall.

    Result

    Natalya defeated Baszler

    Grade

    C

    Analysis

There is an argument to be made that this was a rushed mess that would have been better off not airing, but it did shine a light on the budding tag division and the duos jockeying for a title opportunity.

Natalya and Tamina continued to build momentum here, Brooke and Rose shined, and Naomi and Lana looked as good as they have since forming their team.

How WWE solves this puzzle has yet to be officially announced but it should result in a tag team title picture much stronger coming out of WrestleMania than it has been in years.

Sami Zayn welcomed YouTube and podcast celebrity Logan Paul to the squared circle for the red carpet premiere of his documentary trailer.

Paul appeared somewhat taken aback by the overzealousness of the host. Zayn threw to the trailer, a grand production that furthered his conspiracy theory.

The special guest started to break it to Zayn that the trailer wasn’t particularly good, even mentioning that he had talked to Kevin Owens and knew that Sami had become delusional. Before things got too heated, Owens came from out of nowhere and dropped Zayn with a stunner to end the segment.

After the commercial break, Owens told Alyse Ashton that he can stun anyone at anytime. Zayn attacked from out of nowhere and vowed to see KO at WrestleMania.

    Grade

    B-

    Analysis

The much-hyped appearance by Paul amounted to nothing as he didn’t bring anything of note to the segment. He looked uneasy and uncomfortable, perhaps nervous.

Zayn, on the other hand, was extraordinary. He chewed the scenery, making the most of the segment and reminding fans why he has been one of the bright spots of COVID-era WWE. He was nothing short of outstanding, even as Owens dropped him.

Their match, if it is allowed to meet its potential, has the potential to be a genuine show-stealer and one of the defining bouts of a jam-packed card.

Ahead of her SmackDown Women’s Championship Match against Sasha Banks at WrestleMania, 2021 Royal Rumble winner Bianca Belair battled former top contender Carmella.

The wine-drinking starlet attacked Belair before the match and worked her over during the break. Belair fought her way back into the match following the commercial and put her away with the KOD.

After the match, as Belair celebrated her win, Banks attempted a sneak attack. The EST stopped her. “WrestleMania. Not tonight.”

The victor stood tall to end the segment while Banks held her title high, a reminder to her challenger who holds the power in the division.

    Result

    Belair defeated Carmella

    Grade

    C

    Analysis

Like most of this show, this felt like a placeholder segment.

Belair got the win, after selling way too much for Carmella, and Banks nearly got one more over on her top contender. Instead, the staredown ensued and nothing was really accomplished between the rivals.

It was merely an excuse to keep both women on-screen, while simultaneously putting Carmella over in defeat as the woman who proved she could hang with the Rumble winner. WWE’s insistence on 50-50 booking, evidenced here by Carmella dominating, only to lose so Belair continued her winning ways, benefits no one in the long run.

Apollo Crews cut a promo, officially challenging Big E to a Nigerian Drum Match for the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania. There was no further explanation of what said match entails.

Edge joined Michael Cole and Corey Graves at ringside for the night’s main event, a street fight between Daniel Bryan and Jey Uso.

Uso rocked Bryan with a steel chair shot as the latter attempted a tope suicida, but the former WWE champion roared back with chair shot of his own. Before he could do any more damage, Roman Reigns appeared at the top of the ramp with Paul Heyman as the show headed to the final commercial break of the night.

Back from the timeout, Uso produced a steel chain and delivered a clothesline with it. He blasted Bryan with a shot to the face and delivered a frog splash for a two-count as Heyman calmed Reigns on the stage.

Bryan fought back into the match, catching Uso with a missile dropkick. He kicked the hell out of Uso as Edge took exception to Cole calling Bryan the best high-pressure competitor in WWE. Bryan caught Uso in the YES Lock and tapped him out.

He rolled out of the ring and attacked Edge, stunning him with a running knee and slamming him into the ring post. He rushed the ramp and stunned Reigns with another knee, then applied the submission to The Tribal Chief.

Bryan stood tall, pointing to the sky, momentum on his side heading into a WrestleMania in which he hopes history repeats itself.

    Result

    Bryan defeated Uso

    Grade

    B

    Analysis

To both Edge and Reigns, Bryan proved he was not just some guy who schemed his way into a title shot at WrestleMania. First, he outlasted Uso and showed he can brawl as well as anyone. Then, he left both heels lying, sending a message loudly and clearly to anyone doubting his ability to capture the universal title on April 11.

Edge was great on commentary, too, filling the role of the paranoid bad guy. Whether he was telling Uso not to look at him or chastizing Cole for considering Bryan a better high-pressure wrestler than he, The Rated R Superstar relished the opportunity to be the heel rather than the returning babyface just happy to be back in wrestling.

The story involving these three has been the best thing in the weeks and months leading into WrestleMania so it should be of no real surprise that, on this night of underwhelming creative, Bryan, Edge and Reigns excelled.

WWE SmackDown results, recap, reactions (Mar. 12, 2021): Contract signed

Edge started the show saying he had some words for the two men having a title match at Fastlane.

He called Reigns and Heyman spin doctors and said that Reigns begged him to acknowledge the Tribal Chief. Then when he did, he made a U-Turn down “Daniel Bryan Boulevard” and Daniel Bryan went into business for himself.

He took offense to Bryan saying that he deserved to be in the main event of WrestleMania and not him. He listed all of his former opponents and stated that he’s back because like Bryan, he loves this.

That brought Bryan out and he called out the “Ultimate Opportunist” for getting worked up over Bryan going into business for himself. He felt demoralized after Elimination Chamber and if this is his last WrestleMania he wants to give it everything he’s got. He’ll do whatever he has to do to be in the main event.

Okay show of hands – who else now wants an Edge/Bryan feud? One, two, three… thirty eight, thirty nine, forty… eh let’s just say literally everyone reading this. Given both their similar retirement into grand returns, it would be amazing. We have a Roman Reigns problem though (and a good problem to have!) and the contract signing closed the show.

Before that though, we saw a bit of the tension starting again in the Family when Heyman denied Jey Uso access to Reigns. Edge went up to Uso and recalled memories of Uso’s past with his father. He mentioned that in 2015 he watched the Usos and was reminded of why he loved wrestling, but now he sees Jey walking with his head down as the subordinate to Reigns.

Bryan came out for the contract signing and Reigns said that even though he had agreed to this before, the answer is now no. And then Bryan dug deep. He said that he was surprised the Head of the Table wasn’t a man of his word, but he must have realized that last week changed for him because he did something Reigns could never do on his own – make Jey Uso quit.

Reigns got so mad he signed the contract and then Jey tossed the table out of the ring and got in Bryan’s face. Jey decided to make himself the special enforcer for their match, and Edge came down and suggested both he and Jey face each other next week for the right to be the enforcer. Adam Pearce made it official and they all brawled, but when Edge tossed Bryan aside, Bryan gave him the running knee to close the show!

WHO ELSE NOW WANTS AN EDGE/BRYAN FEUD? WE DESERVE THIS!

On a serious note, I loved Bryan getting his way by bringing us all back to Hell in a Cell last year when Roman had to nearly murder Jimmy in order for Jey to finally say “I Quit”. Brilliantly done. And next week’s match to decide who gets to be special enforcer will rule because everyone has a vested interest in it. Roman wants Jey, but he knows Jey usually can’t get the job done. Bryan wants Edge, but Edge should come to the conclusion that if he really helps Bryan, Bryan gets his spot at WrestleMania Edge says he doesn’t deserve.

Is it Friday already? I’m ready for this.

But like… give me Edge/Bryan pretty please?

Let’s get to the rest of the main hits and misses of this show. For a full rundown of SmackDown, check out the live blog by Rev. Claire Elizabeth!

“You’ll never be on my level!”

Seth Rollins was interviewed about Cesaro.

He said that he went out to help Cesaro because he saw the potential in him. But when he tried to help, he got embarrassed. He called Cesaro the biggest waste of potential in WWE.

Kayla Braxton said that Cesaro and Murphy would be having a rematch, and Rollins walked off delighted.

So Rollins walked out for the match and sat on the stage. Murphy hit Cesaro with a high knee (and slapped his leg! Oh no!) Cesaro superplexed Murphy from the apron to the mat. His strength is incredible. Cesaro started swinging Murphy and Rollins interfered.

He hit Cesaro with two curb stomps and grabbed a chair and set it up on Cesaro’s head. Jaime Noble jumped on Seth to stop him. What a cute reunion. The referees helped Cesaro up as Seth berated him.

Seth walked to the back and was greeted by an angry Shinsuke Nakamura! I would have like… attacked him but Nak just stood there. The segment and match were good and I’m liking the direction of Cesaro here. We haven’t seen him presented this way in a long time.

The “biggest waste of potential in WWE” line cuts a little deeper doesn’t it? It’s how a lot of us have felt WWE’s, specifically Vince’s, opinion has been of Cesaro for years. Time to prove ‘em wrong.

The Reginald division

Kevin Owens said that he needed some time away because of how physically exhausting the past few months were. He brought out Sasha Banks and Bianca Belair.

Owens said that they could potentially be tag team champions at WrestleMania but they have to beat Jax and Baszler first, which they haven’t been able to do. He addressed their underlying tension.

Belair said that Banks has been entertaining Reggie and that’s why he keeps coming out for her matches. Banks said she can’t help it if she looks this good, and said that the EST would be nothing without the bEST. They kept going at it, but then Jax, Baszler, Reginald, Natalya, and Tamina came out and that led to the tag match.

Of course Reginald distracted the referee when Belair was about to get the victory, and then he dove into the ring and Sasha went after him which distracted the ref again and Tamina pinned Belair.

I don’t like this at all. Reginald is the focal point of the WWE women’s division. He was even standing in the middle of everyone with the camera right on him at the end. Stop this.

Fashion show

So we have a… Sugar Mama situation going on.

Nia Jax took Reginald to an upscale suit place and told him he could get whatever he wanted.

Cut to every dressing room scene in any movie and television show you’ve already seen 100 times. Reggie came out in different suits to the delight of Jax, and the dismay of Baszler, who just sat looking at her phone the whole time.

At one point he came out in a gold suit with these cool looking shoes and honestly that should have sealed the deal. Dude looking hella good in that one. But in the end they both chose this gray one and then he sat in Jax’s lap and they basically alluded to sex.

So… huh. To be honest the segment wasn’t awful. Nia really just takes me out of it because I don’t really like her, but who doesn’t relate to Shayna here the most? We’ve all been there.

The Rest

Big E defeated Sami Zayn

Big E returned and said that now that Crews opened Pandora’s box, there’s no coming back. Now he has to go Old Testament on him. He told Crews to come down to get his opportunity, and no Apollo. E decided to make an open challenge and King Corbin came out to accept it. As he was about to, Sami Zayn ran out and accepted it instead. I’m loving the dynamic between Zayn and Corbin lately.

E screamed out Apollo’s name as he attacked Zayn. Big E won and continued to call for Apollo. Finally, Apollo’s music hit and he blindsided E. He threw the steel steps in the ring and hit E with them again. Maybe this will take Big E out of Fastlane so that their match can be for the Intercontinental championship at WrestleMania. This match certainly deserves to be a marquee match at WrestleMania. The ferocity of Crews in this heel turn has truly revitalized him.

Street Profits and Mysterios defeated Dirty Dawgz and Alpha Academy

The Dirty Dawgz and Alpha Academy attacked the babyfaces before the match started. Poor Rey got knocked right off of Dominik’s shoulders. Dawkins started with intensity and drop kicked everyone. Alphas double teamed Dom and Gable did a phenomenal suplex. I really want these two in an Iron Man. Roode grounded him but Dom did a tornado DDT that also looked great. Roode knocked Ford off the turnbuckle and he took quite a tumble to the floor. Rey came in and wow I couldn’t even keep up with him. Ford flew up 30,000 feet and hit the frog splash to win. This was a really fun match. Montez pinning Bobby Roode would mean be on the lookout for a tag title match soon.

Grade: A-

WWE SmackDown Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from February 19 | Bleacher Report

The February 19 edition of Friday Night SmackDown was the final show before WWE Elimination Chamber 2021, and that made it one of the more important nights on the Road to WrestleMania 37.

In the main event, the six men who would fight inside the Elimination Chamber to earn a shot at Roman Reigns would battle. Kevin Owens teamed up with Daniel Bryan and Cesaro to fight Jey Uso, King Corbin and Sami Zayn.

Edge wanted to make a statement before Elimination Chamber, and he announced he would open SmackDown. With two Elimination Chamber matches determining the future champions of red and blue brands, The Rated-R Superstar had a major decision to make.

Bayley invited Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler for the second-ever edition of “Ding Dong, Hello!” The WWE women’s tag team champions had many future challengers, including Lana and Naomi as well as Dakota Kai and Raquel Gonzalez, but SmackDown’s Bianca Belair and Sasha Banks also had a beef with the champions.

This show had work to do in building up WWE Elimination Chamber. Everyone was sure to have their eyes on this big night.

Edge talked about his future at WWE WrestleMania and the choice he still has to make. Roman Reigns interrupted to make clear that he was the main event and deserved to be the main event. As The Rated-R Superstar and The Head of the Table got close, Sami Zayn arrived.

The Master Strategist refused to be disrespected, only to take a superkick from Jey Uso. Reigns walked up to Edge and whispered in his ear before walking away.

Backstage, Edge caught up with Kevin Owens, showing his respect to KO for continuing to fight hard. He told Owens he was rooting for him. King Corbin tried to tell Edge to keep out of his kingdom, but The Rated-R Superstar was not impressed.

The Rated-R Superstar put over Cesaro after The Swiss Cyborg’s interview talking about Seth Rollins. Daniel Bryan asked Edge to choose him if The Planet’s Champion defeated Reigns on Sunday.

    Grade

    B

    Analysis

Edge continues to tease a decision without delivering. However, this worked because it was more about Reigns trying to convince The Rated-R Superstar to choose him. The two were truly intense facing off, selling the likely WrestleMania dynamic.

Zayn is entertaining every time out. However, it made little sense for him to get involved in the segment. He had a tag team match later in the night and would not have wanted to get injured. Playing his hand early served no purpose to his strategy for WWE Elimination Chamber.

Big E joined commentary on his own couch, complaining about Apollo Crews demanding another shot. Crews ruined the WWE intercontinental champion’s TV dinner by throwing Shinsuke Nakamura into the champ. This nearly set off Big E, but he managed to calm himself and continue his foot soak.

Crews thought he had The Artist’s number, but Nakamura caught the young star in a small package to win. Afterward, Crews lost it, attacking The Artist. Big E got in the way, but that only convinced Crews to attack Big E, including dropping steel steps from the ring to the floor onto the champion.

The intercontinental champion had to be stretchered out of the ring due to the attack.

    Result

    Nakamura def. Crews by pinfall.

    Grade

    B

    Analysis

Crews vs. Nakamura was a fine match with limited story behind it. While The Artist still looked to be working at a higher level, he did not click with Crews at the same level as he has other recent opponents. However, this was ultimately about the aftermath.

Crews’ brutal assault of Big E was special. It felt like a turning point where his character was finally realized. Big E set him off by telling him to “go back to catering”, and it is clear that Crews is done playing in the background. He finally feels ready to dethrone Big E.

3 of 7

Seth Rollins arrived as Big E was being stretchered to the back. He sympathized with Big E’s pain and betrayal. He wanted everyone to accept his vision, lodging a formal legal complaint against WWE for ruining his return.

He particularly warned Cesaro that he would feel the wrath of The Messiah every time he stepped into a ring.

    Grade

    B+

    Analysis

Rollins has absolutely nailed his role as the cocky cult leader since his evolution, and it is fascinating to watch his evolution. His rhetoric is reminiscent of televangelists and even the 45th president. It works really well now that he has no help to back him up. It sells his delusion.

It is great to see that WWE is fully embracing a rivalry between Rollins and Cesaro. The two can be great together, and this is an opportunity to keep The Swiss Cyborg a major force on SmackDown after likely losing in the Elimination Chamber.

4 of 7

Tamina looked dominant throughout in this contest, but The Riott Squad managed to isolate Natalya, nearly taking the win. Billie Kay arrived to provide the distraction that set up Liv Morgan to walk into a spin-out side slam by Tamina to win.

Natalya and Tamina took out Kay after the match to make clear they were not looking for a third member.

    Result

Tamina and Natalya def. Riott Squad by pinfall.

    Grade

    D-

    Analysis

This was an ugly match from the outset. It was only a couple minutes long, but Tamina did not seem to be working at the same pace as Morgan. Natalya was clearly rushing with the limited time, and the Kay appearance was so frustratingly telegraphed.

Kay is entertaining. The Riott Squad can be a solid tag team for WWE. However, this story is not working. It is time to find someone else for Kay to work with. Natalya and Tamina don’t exactly cut it.

Bayley introduced her guests Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler. The WWE women’s tag team champions immediately started trash talking Sasha Banks and Bianca Belair, which surprisingly sent Reginald to the ring. He spoke up for both The Boss and The EST as better than the tag team champions.

Banks arrived to remind Reginald she could speak for herself, and Belair took exception to Reginald and Banks’ comments about her. Reggie convinced them to work together, setting up a surprise six-man tag team match.

After the heels isolated Banks to beat her down, Reginald had to tag in. Against The Irresistible Force, Reginald could not make a dent until The Boss and The EST dropkicked Reginald on top of Jax to take a surprise pinfall.

Carmella questioned Reginald, telling her sommelier to do the right thing. She yelled at him for giving her a bad glass of wine.

    Result

Reginald, Banks and Belair def. Jax, Baszler and Bayley by pinfall.

    Grade

    C+

    Analysis

This was an odd segment, especially because of the involvement of Reginald. In just a couple months, he has gone from help for Carmella to an odd infatuation with Banks. It made no sense for him to get involved without The Untouchable One inserting herself in the action.

WWE has avoided intergender matches almost entirely in WWE, yet Reginald is just thrown into random women’s matches. This would make sense in other wrestling promotions, but WWE has seemingly set up a divide that it is breaking without explanation.

Bayley was the best part of all of this. She makes every inch of her talk show set work. She sold the insanity with her frustration.

6 of 7

As Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode watched on commentary with solo cups, this looked to be a friendly competition between two developing teams until Otis snapped. He attacked Rey Mysterio until the referee called for the bell.

Chad Gable encouraged the aggression, setting up Otis to hit a diving splash on Rey with Dominik Mysterio already out of the way. Dominik had to help his father to the back, wheezing in pain.

    Result

Rey and Dominik def. Alpha Academy by disqualification.

    Grade

    C+

    Analysis

This could have been executed better, especially with more time, but it served its purpose. Gable and Otis have not fully worked so far. The reason was because it was unclear where it was going. Gable just seemed to be headed for a beatdown when Otis saw through him.

Instead, it has moved in a more interesting direction. Otis is truly learning from Gable. He’s clearly in better shape. Now, his attitude is evolving as well. The two can be a good tag team if the two can work in sync, and that adds an interesting team to the division.

It is a shame though that Heavy Machinery was broken up just so that Otis could team with Gable instead. Tucker has more or less been discarded.

7 of 7

Just before the match, Daniel Bryan and Cesaro questioned whether Kevin Owens would turn on them like he had all his past partners. Edge joined commentary to scout the potential competition.

Cesaro showed off early, swinging Sami Zayn and King Corbin for minutes. Jey Uso grabbed The Swiss Cyborg and threw him over the announce table. Paul Heyman arrived to join commentary to go back and forth with The Rated-R Superstar.

The Master Strategist gladly talked trash as Cesaro got beat down but was silenced by the hot tag from Daniel Bryan. Kevin Owens slipped outside to take out Corbin with a cannonball off the apron.

Zayn hit a Blue Thunder Bomb then went to the top rope. However, that was The Master Strategist’s last mistake. Bryan caught him with a superplex unto the Yes Lock for a quick tap out by Zayn to preserve his health.

Everyone in the match went after each other after the bell until Uso speared Edge followed by Reigns catching The Rated-R Superstar with a Spear of his own.

    Result

Bryan, Cesaro and Owens def. Zayn, Corbin and Uso by pinfall.

    Grade

    C+

    Analysis

This was far from the level of impact that we got on Monday Night Raw with the gauntlet match. However, he was a solid match thanks to Cesaro. He did the heavy-lifting in this contest physically, showing out in a big way, before the others got in the big moments at the end.

The action did look a little too choreographed at times, especially given the wrestlers involved. It all built to Bryan gaining some momentum that was immediately overshadowed by Edge and Reigns building their rivalry past the wrestlers in the Elimination Chamber.

While WWE should be building toward WrestleMania, it was a mistake to let the go-home show end with a moment that was not about the immediate pay-per-view. This makes it all too clear that Reigns will retain.

WWE SmackDown results, recap, reactions (Feb. 5, 2021): The future

This recap is properly titled “The future” because there are many men and women in WWE who are indeed the future of wrestling. Roman Reigns, Sasha Banks, Apollo Crews, Bianca Belair, Dominik Mysterio, Liv, Ruby, and Billie Kay are just some of those names.

Hulk Hogan has no place in that future, and it’s time for the business to move on from him.

Hogan right before the Black History Month video package? Hmm. I am not interested in hearing from ol’ red and yellow talking about the Andre the Giant match or any of his opinions on what’s going on right now. And I’ve got a bridge to sell you if you think that he’s even interested in the modern era of wrestling.

Total contrast to the 2021 Men’s Royal Rumble winner Edge. Edge is not here for himself. You could see it on this show, and you could see it throughout his interactions with people. You can see the happiness in his face. This is not even comparable to Goldberg, and yeah I’ve seen that and it’s a dumb comparison.

The future of wrestling is bright. Time to stop trotting out the legends of yesteryear to “pop a rating”. Build up the performers who this generation will want to look to in 20 years. SmackDown generally does the right thing, and did with this show too, with one miss I’ll touch on in a moment.

Let’s get into the main hits and misses of this show. For a full rundown of SmackDown, check out the live blog by Rev. Claire Elizabeth!

Building the suspense

Reigns started the show, talking about looking to the future. (Hey I did that, too!)

He demanded Edge come out to make his decision because Edge should be begging to face him, but Heyman had to inform him that Edge was not here yet.

Dude got MAD. He demanded an answer from Edge by the end of the night.

This promo wasn’t even over yet and I wanted Edge to pick Roman. Immediately was sold on this match. I haven’t seen him as irate as he was since his feud with Jey Uso. Angry Roman is… is something, isn’t he?

Edge came out later and put over all the WWE champions throughout the brands. Reigns came out with a very creepy Uso stalking Edge and Edge called him out for having back up. Reigns told Uso to go back to the bus and said he insulted his family, and he wants to be acknowledged. All of a sudden, Kevin Owens hit the Stunner on Reigns. Edge smirked and got out of the ring to close the show.

The way Jey Uso stalked Edge was frightening, by the way. I just needed to mention that. Jey’s fully enrolled in Fight Club with Roman Durden. We all know the first rule…

This was a brilliant finish. Accomplished multiple things. For starters, I said on my Royal Rumble recap that the ending of Owens and Reigns should not be the last time they interact. Seeing this Stunner likely means one more match? I’ll take it. We need a placeholder until WrestleMania. Secondly, the suspense. And it’s already killing me. Edge and Drew would be fun, as would Edge and Balor.

But Edge and Reigns? After this show, sign me up.

Who’s the bEST?

People are blowing up Belair’s phone because of her Royal Rumble win.

She put over the Empress of Tomorrow and The Boss Sasha Banks’ Mandalorian appearances, and said both would be incredible opponents.

Enter Reginald. He offered advice, saying picking Asuka would be way better because she’ll never beat Banks. Carmella came out and said she beat Banks twice and Belair wouldn’t be able to beat her.

Banks made her grand entrance and put Belair over hard. She’s been paying attention to the EST and her record breaking win, but she’s not the bEST. Reginald tried to butt in again and Belair whipped him with her ponytail.

The emotion and presence did not match from last Sunday, but that’s really because WWE has no clue how to book babyfaces. Bianca is a damn star. Let her talk. She was brilliant after her win on Sunday. She didn’t even need to sell it because that was real. We need more of that.

The Rest

Big E defeated Apollo Crews and Sami Zayn

Big E knew he signed up for fights by being champion. He really is such a wonderful talker.

Crews’ strength was on full display here. He launched himself over the top rope and took out Big E, and then did a moonsault from the apron to the floor. Even my gut hurt from that. Zayn tried for a Blue Thunder Bomb but couldn’t get E up. E sent Crews of the rope and I almost jumped because it looked nasty. But he came back in and got a near fall on Zayn. Incredible height on a frog splash! Crews took Zayn out but fell to the Big Ending. This was a great match and boy did Crews look pissed. I’m excited to see what comes of that!

Cesaro defeated Daniel Bryan

These two locked up immediately. Bryan had urgency and aggression right from the jump. Cesaro threw Bryan up for an uppercut but Bryan took him down and tried for the Yes Lock. Cesaro’s head was already bleeding. Bryan stomped on that bleeding head and went for the running knee and Cesaro transitioned into a Backbreaker. I did not expect Cesaro to make Bryan tap, but as Bryan’s said in the past, he wants to put guys over. Cesaro going back to show respect to Bryan was intriguing! Rumor mills swirled saying that Cesaro was originally planned to be in the Nakamura spot weeks ago, so maybe a face turn incoming?

Bayley defeated Ruby Riott

I really hope they never make this Billie Kay stuff bad. It’s so so good, y’all. She was at commentary claiming that she didn’t take Riott’s and Morgan’s discussion as them telling her they didn’t want her around. Some really awesome spots in the match, like when Bayley launched Riott into the top turnbuckle head first and I nearly gout Carmella from the Royal Rumble vibes. She also sold her arm like it was broken, and of course Kay tried to help but it didn’t work. Loved Billie going up to Bayley with her resume.

Dirty Dawgz defeated Otis and Chad Gable

Roode and Ziggler have new music, and it sounded pretty good! Y’all I have no clue what happened in this match because I was totally distracted by the new box that popped up with the Street Profits doing Cole’s and Graves’ jobs. All I know is Roode and Ziggler have new music, and Roode and Ziggler won. My apologies to Otis and Gable.

Dominik Mysterio defeated King Corbin

Dominik was the super underdog for most of this match, but I actually like what they did here. Both Corey and Corbin were selling Dom needing to split from his father in order to become something, while Cole was selling Dom’s babyface qualities linked with his father. Corbin got out of the 619 path and hit the Deep Six. Rey crawled under the ring and grabbed Corbin’s leg and Dom took advantage with a 619, frog splash, and victory.

WWE SmackDown Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from January 29 | Bleacher Report

It’s the last show before WWE Royal Rumble, and you know what that means. Friday Night SmackDown promised to build the excitement to a fever pitch just two days before one of the biggest nights of the year. This January 29 edition of the blue brand was certain to be unpredictable.

Only one match was promised ahead of the night as Bianca Belair looked to avenge her loss to Bayley. After everything The Role Model has put her through, this was The EST’s opportunity for welcomed revenge.

Roman Reigns and Kevin Owens did not want to wait until Sunday to start the trash talk. SmackDown promised a war of words where KO and The Head of the Table could speak their final piece before an epic Last Man Standing match.

This was far from all that SmackDown would give fans just days before the Rumble. However, the blue brand was keeping it all under wraps. Could Raw stars invade SmackDown to make a statement? Would new stars earn a slot in the men’s or women’s Rumble matches? Everyone wanted to build momentum.

The January 29 edition of SmackDown felt like a monumental occasion and a chance for WWE to truly bring the absolute best to the table before the night that will begin to define the Road to WrestleMania.

1 of 6

Daniel Bryan opened the show to talk about what it meant to him to win the men’s Royal Rumble. He wanted to change his life one more time by main eventing WrestleMania one last time. He was not certain of how many more WrestleMania moments he had left.

He put over Chad Gable and Otis with the Alpha Academy getting him in shape for a long difficult climb to the top. AJ Styles interrupted as part of the quarterly Brand-to-Brand Invitational, setting up e challenge by The Planet’s Champion for later in the night.

Styles pushed Bryan to the mat, and Omos got in the way of The Planet’s Champion seeking retribution. Bryan called out Styles for standing behind the big man too often.

    Grade

    B-

    Analysis

Bryan is one of the best in the world, but his promos each week are growing tiring. He continues to play hype man for the Royal Rumble, spending too much time explaining how the match works. It will be best for him to get past WWE Royal Rumble.

The quarterly Brand-to-Brand Invitational is a silly technicality that WWE likes to pull out at random times. However, bringing The Phenomenal One to SmackDown just before Royal Rumble was a smart way to hype the event.

Styles vs. Bryan is a guaranteed fantastic clash of top talent. Both men have been considered the best wrestler in the world, and each time they step into the ring, they steal the show.

After a video package was rolled for last week’s obstacle course, Bayley explained to Kayla Braxton in a pre-match interview why she was simply better than The EST and would win the women’s Royal Rumble.

The Role Model took over the action early, beating down on The EST. Bayley made a mistake by taunting Belair with her braid, motivating The EST to get physical. She landed a series of punches followed by an impressive standing moonsault for a nearfall.

Bayley tried to take advantage of the injured left elbow of Belair from last week, stopping her from hitting a Glam Slam. However, The EST fought with all that she had, knocking Bayley loopy with a right hand followed by the KOD for the win.

Afterward, on the top of the ramp, Braxton asked Belair about how much this win meant to her, and The EST put over Bayley as The Role Model glared at her from inside the ring.

    Result

    Belair def. Bayley by pinfall.

    Grade

    B+

    Analysis

Bayley has been the perfect challenger to introduce Belair to the SmackDown audience. Each segment shows more and more why The EST is not just the future of WWE but good enough to challenge the absolute best already. This match was no different.

While Belair can just rely on her athletic prowess to shine, she has a complete game in the ring, switching her style to tell a complete story. She just needs time. She and Bayley got it in a really good opening contest. This was completely different from their first fight.

The main mistake WWE made her was the post-match interview. Belair can cut a promo, but she was exhausted after a long fight. She should not have had to put words together when her actions spoke for themselves.

3 of 6

Dominik Mysterio attacked King Corbin from behind while The King was headed to the ring. This only seemed to anger Corbin, who emphatically took over once the match began. He physically beat down Dominik with right hands as Rey Mysterio watched on commentary.

Rey’s son tried everything he could to stay in the action, reversing The King’s dangerous attempts injure him. Both men went into the steel post, and Dominik managed to reverse an End of Days attempt into a tilt-a-whirl DDT. However, that could not get the win, and the second End of Days attempt connected to win.

Afterward, Corbin tried to attack Rey as well, but The Master of the 619 sent him into the steel post outside.

    Result

    Corbin def. Dominik by pinfall.

    Grade

    C+

    Analysis

Corbin vs. the Mysterios has hardly been an interesting rivalry. After Rey and Dominik disappeared from television, the story halted, and their return has made Dominik look like a rookie again rather than the young prodigy he seemed to be against Seth Rollins.

Dominik has decent chemistry with The King, but each loss has cut off what little momentum Dominik already had. He is back to playing second fiddle to his father. The clear focus is to build up one more match between Corbin and Rey.

Ideally, this rivalry ends within the next month. However, with The Knights of the Lone Wolf off TV lately as well as Murphy, WWE will likely complicate things again soon with those stars returning.

4 of 6

After Kalisto chatted up Sasha Banks, The Boss ran into Reginald, who gave her the “perfect wine to pair with losing” the SmackDown Women’s Championship. Banks left the wine bottle with the sommelier to return to Carmella.

WWE showed a video package for the whole history of Kevin Owens and Roman Reigns. Michael Cole led a final interview between The Head of the Table and KO. Owens explained that he would never stop getting back up on Sunday until he won.

Paul Heyman initially refused to let Reigns waste his words on KO, but The Head of the Tables heard Owens speak for too long. He blamed Owens’ father for raising him the wrong way to believe he could beat a better man. He called him and his whole family fools.

With each painful word, Owens lost his cool more and more, calling him a fake mob boss. Reigns turned off the camera for his side of the interview as KO yelled at the screen with fire. Owens looked ready to find Reigns and start the fight early.

    Grade

    A+

    Analysis

WWE hyped up KO and Reigns’ interview as the biggest moment of the night, and it absolutely was. Reigns found a way under Owens’ skin and exploited it. However, at the same time, KO clearly frustrated his rival by never losing his confidence.

The Head of the Table promotes himself as a family man while KO prides himself as the ultimate family man. This interview clearly defined the dynamic between these two that has made this story so special. Without being able to defeat Reigns, KO has just made the WWE universal champion better.

This match could be the best on the whole card. Even if it is not, these two men will tell a special story together as they have all along the way to get to WWE Royal Rumble.

5 of 6

The Miz and John Morrison got into a fight with Big E backstage about who would make a bigger impact in the men’s Royal Rumble match. Sami Zayn tried to recruit Shinsuke Nakamura, but The Artist completely dismissed him.

AJ Styles told Omos to stay in the back for this match, wanting to prove he can beat The Planet’s Champion. Cesaro joined commentary to explain why he has more momentum than either man in the ring.

After an impressive series to start off the match, Bryan got the upper hand only to be interrupted by Sami Zayn. The distraction allowed The Phenomenal One to knock The Planet’s Champion off the top rope to the floor.

The Master Strategist refused to be left off the show and be silenced, so he spoke to commentary with his camera crew. In the ring, Bryan struggled to get off the ring, trapped in the Calf Crusher until he made it to the bottom rope.

Bryan shifted his weight to plant Styles with a butterfly suplex that transitioned into the Yes Lock until The Phenomenal One made it to the ropes. Big E arrived and clotheslined The Master Strategist, starting a brawl between everyone.

Zayn attacked Bryan to cause a disqualification then the heels beat down the faces until Shinsuke Nakamura evened the odds. Cesaro and Nakamura almost came to blows, but Zayn got involved and dumped outside.

    Result

    Bryan def. Styles by disqualification.

    Grade

    B+

    Analysis

While the cheap ending was expected and stopped this match from becoming truly special, Bryan vs. Styles was fantastic once again. The two had a great technical showcase in the midst of chaos at ringside, reminding everyone that they still both have plenty more great matches in store together.

The two got too much time to wrestle the rest of the hour, so something was always going to happen. With the Rumble Sunday, this was the time to build up a variety of challengers. Bryan and Styles may be more likely to win than most in the match, but WWE needs to build a variety of options.

The six-man tag team match was only a promise of more action and a story that feels more apprioriate as the Royal Rumble go-home show main event.

6 of 6

Daniel Bryan was the first victim of the heels after Sami Zayn caught The Planet’s Champion with a chop block. After an emphatic missile dropkick, Bryan finally got to rest his knee, giving an impressive hot tag to Big E that could not be stopped even after a European uppercut from Cesaro.

The Miz and John Morrison arrived to take out Shinsuke Nakamura at ringside then team up on Big E, forcing the referee to call for another disqualification. Otis arrived, seeing an opportunity to finally get revenge on The A-Lister and The Shaman of Sexy. He cleared both out of the ring.

The match was restarted as a five-on-four handicap match by Sonya Deville. Again, the heels isolated Bryan, who competed over 30 minutes in the various restarted matches. It looked like the heels had the match won after taking out the other faces, but Sheamus arrived to even the odds.

Everyone hit impressive offense in a chaotic scene that left Zayn fighting a fresh Celtic Warrior. Sheamus planted him with a Brogue Kick to win. Braun Strowman arrived and took out everyone, hitting a running powerslam on Cesaro to end the night.

    Result

Big E, Bryan and Nakamura def. Cesaro, Styles and Zayn by disqualification; Sheamus, Big E, Bryan, Nakamura and Otis def. Cesaro, Styles, Zayn, Miz and Morrison by pinfall.

    Grade

    C

    Analysis

The positive in the original six-man match was seeing more great action. Cesaro and Nakamura gave an early preview of the great match they can have together soon. Bryan and Zayn got back to basics with a fun sequence. Big E got to look like a monster with his hot tag.

It was just an awkward transition to an unnecessary bigger match because Miz and Morrison had to get involved. All the wrestling here was memorable, and everyone got a small chance to stand out. It just was far too much chaos to enjoy it.

Strowman ended the night as the big late addition to the men’s Royal Rumble match, but everyone knew he would be in the contest without official word. While The Monster Among Men should be seen as a favorite, this moment may have built him up too strong to actually pull it out.

As WWE prepares for the Royal Rumble on January 31, it’s all hands on deck as more and more Superstars declare their entries and attempt to qualify for the titular Rumble matches.

This week’s SmackDown continued to build up the pay-per-view while also dealing with some in-house business for the blue brand.

After earning a title shot by defeating Sami Zayn last week, Apollo Crews challenged Big E in a match for the Intercontinental Championship.

We also saw Bayley and Bianca Belair compete on an obstacle course to see which one was the superior athlete, and Roman Reigns and Kevin Owens prepared for their showdown at The Royal Rumble.

Let’s look at everything that happened on Friday’s show.

1 of 8

SmackDown opened with a video package recapping what happened last week with Reigns and Adam Pearce before The Tribal Chief and Paul Heyman made their way to the ring.

Reigns spoke about how Owens and Pearce might have put one over on him but he is the champion because he doesn’t believe in the mentality of “Card subject to change.” He said his back is starting to hurt from carrying this company for years.

Pearce came out and said this has gone too far and things are getting out of control. Reigns said the only thing that is out of control is Owens being in a title match.

Reigns felt disrespected and had Heyman rip into Pearce. This led to Heyman challenging Pearce to a match, which was quickly accepted.

    Grade: B-

    Analysis

Pearce has grown into a great on-screen authority figure and seeing him used in more meaningful ways in recent weeks has been a lot of fun.

This was a solid opening segment that probably lasted a few minutes longer than it needed to but never became insufferable.

Reigns was more vocal than usual, which helped express his rage at being tricked. Despite being a heel, almost everything he said was true, especially when it came to his health.

2 of 8

The women’s tag team champions took a trip to the blue brand this week to take on Liv Morgan and Ruby Riott with Billie Kay in their corner.

The Queen and Riott started the match with a basic lockup and takedown combination. Asuka got the tag and ran Riott over with a shoulder tackle.

Morgan made a blind tag and hit a dropkick to Charlotte while she was distracted with Kay. She scored a two-count with a crossbody from the top rope. After a break, Riott and Morgan still had the upper hand.

Asuka tagged in and hit a running knee but Riott was there to break up the pin. Riott had Asuka pinned but Kay accidentally distracted the ref. The Empress recovered and tagged in The Queen to hit Natural Selection for the win.

    Analysis

We are only a couple of weeks into this angle but Kay is already impacting the outcome of The Riott Squad’s matches in a negative way, which means this union is doomed to fail.

The match itself was pretty good and gave all four women a chance to showcase their skills. Morgan and Riott looked especially good despite Kay’s involvement.

The women’s tag team division needs a lot of work but if The Riott Squad is one of the main duos holding it down, there is hope that it can improve in 2021.

Daniel Bryan came out to talk about how The Royal Rumble event always makes him feel excited. He was eventually interrupted by Cesaro, who rubbed in how he beat Bryan last week.

Cesaro issued an open challenge and Dolph Ziggler answered the call. We returned from a commercial to see the match getting going. They fought for control with a series of holds and reversals.

The Swiss Cyborg nailed an uppercut in the corner and swung Ziggler around by his feet. They went back and forth with near falls until The Showoff hit the Zig Zag for a two-count. Cesaro caught him and hit the Neutralizer for the win.

    Grade: A

    Analysis

This was what pro wrestling could be. Cesaro and Ziggler are miles ahead of most of the roster in terms of technical ability and they didn’t even need a long match to prove how good they are.

A few more minutes would have helped but they packed a lot into the time they had and told a solid story from bell to bell while Bryan provided context on commentary.

Between this and his win over Bryan last week, Cesaro appears to be getting a push heading into the men’s Royal Rumble match. Even if he doesn’t win at the PPV, it’s awesome to see a talented performer being used the right way for once.

Reginald tried to win over Sasha Banks with a rose at the start of the match but she smacked the taste out of his mouth. She tried to take him down but he flipped up to his feet.

He grabbed Banks by the waist but she reversed it. He rolled right out of the ring and he backflipped off of the apron just to show off. The Boss made him pay with a baseball slide dropkick.

Banks took him down with a wheelbarrow bulldog but missed a meteora in the corner. Reginald ate a knee to the face but caught her in a crossbody. She sent him out of the ring with an arm drag and took him down with a meteora from the apron.

She eventually brought him down into the Bank Statement for the submission victory.

    Grade: C+

    Analysis

As impressive as some of Reginald’s acrobatics were, this match still had some sloppy moments and awkward spots that would have benefitted from this bout being pre-taped.

Still, this was better than anyone expected it to be, so that’s a plus. The feud between Carmella and Banks didn’t need this but it was a fun change of pace from what we have seen in the past.

WWE has always shied away from intergender wrestling so it will be interesting to see if we get more matches like this down the road.

As soon as the bell rang, Big E hit a huge belly to belly suplex followed by a splash on the apron. Crews fired back with a couple of kicks that rocked the champ. He got a quick two-count with a standing moonsault and stayed on the big man with a pair of German suplexes.

Big E prevented a third and hit a big urinagi slam for another near-fall. Crews fought him off in the corner with a few headbutts. Sami Zayn had handcuffed himself in the aisle as a protest but he released himself and ran to the ring to hit both men with Helluva Kicks to cause a no-contest finish.

    Grade: C

    Analysis

The match was just getting going when Zayn interfered, so it ended up stopping short of reaching its full potential in many ways.

This might keep the storyline going but it still robbed us of what could have been a great title fight, so it’s hard not to be a little mad about it.

Crews, Zayn and Big E will likely end up in a triple threat match at The Royal Rumble to settle this once and for all.

Bayley gave us a rundown of the obstacles before they took to the course. She decided to run the course first and pushed Belair out of the way.

She took her time getting through each obstacle and ended up cheating by running around the walls that were set up instead of climbing over them. She ended with a time of 1:12.

Before Belair took her turn, Bayley had some of the obstacles made more difficult. Belair still flew through the course but when she got to the fireman’s carry, she had to carry Otis instead of Chad Gable. She still did it and beat Bayley’s time by 17 seconds.

Bayley attacked her and beat her down before throwing her into the pole of a basketball hoop that was part of the course.

    Grade: C+

    Analysis

This was nothing special in terms of entertainment value but Belair’s physical prowess made it more enjoyable than it would have been without her.

We all saw this ending with an attack so there was no surprise or swerve. It played out how it needed to even if it was the most predictable thing on the show.

Dominik Mysterio was looking to get some payback on Baron Corbin after The King defeated his father last week. Corbin’s knights were absent once again.

Dom went right after him and hit a few quick strikes before he sent Corbin out of the ring. The King leveled him with a clothesline for a two-count.

Corbin was able to secure the win with The End of Days.

    Grade: C

    Analysis

This wasn’t bad but it also wasn’t good. It just…was. We’ll move on and forget about this in a week or two after one of the Mysterios beats Corbin in a rematch.

It was nice to see Dominik again but it’s hard not to wonder why WWE had him skip NXT altogether. He could benefit from having more time to polish his mic skills.

As Heyman made his way to the ring, he pretended to suffer a leg injury. He did the same thing Pearce did last week and named a replacement. That is when Reigns came to the ring.

As soon as he hit the ring, The Tribal Chief nailed him with a Superman Punch. Pearce tried to come back but a low blow stopped him in his tracks.

KO came out of nowhere and saved Pearce from certain destruction by attacking the universal champion. They brawled near the LED screens with fans on them before going back to the ring.

Owens blocked a Superman Punch and hit a Stunner. It took several officials to keep them apart and even then, they still managed to get to each other a few times. KO hit a second Stunner before he put Reigns through the announce table with a Popup Powerbomb.

    Grade: B

    Analysis

We might not have gotten to see Pearce come out of retirement to hand Heyman a beating but we did get to see Owens destroy Reigns, so the show had a happy ending.

It was clear Heyman was never going to have a real match but there was still hope for Pearce to get in a few good shots. Maybe he will have another chance in the future.

The feud between Reigns and KO is being carried solely by the skill of the two men involved. The storyline is nothing special or original but how it is being executed has been fun to watch.
