What Else Is An M.2 WiFi Slot Good For?

Many mainboards and laptops these days come with a range of M.2 slots, with only a subset capable of NVME SSDs, and often a stubby one keyed for ‘WiFi’ cards. Or that’s what those are generally intended to be used for, but as [Peter Brockie] found out when pilfering sites like AliExpress, is that you can get a lot of alternate expansion cards for those slots that have nothing to do with WiFi.

Why this should be no surprise to anyone who knows about the M.2 interface is because each ‘key’ type specifies one or more electrical interfaces that are available on that particular M.2 slot. For slots intended to be used with NVME SSDs, you see M-keying, that makes 4 lanes of PCIe available. The so-called ‘WiFi slots’ on many mainboards are keyed usually for A/E, which means two lanes of PCIe, USB 2.0, I2C and a few other, rather low-level interfaces. What this means is that you can hook up any PCIe or or USB (2.0) peripheral to these slots, as long as the bandwidth is sufficient.

What [Peter] found includes adapter cards that add Ethernet (1 Gb, 2.5 Gb), USB 2.0 ports, SIM card (wireless adapter?), an SFP fiber-based networking adapter, multiple M.2 to 2+ SATA port adapters, tensor accelerator chips (NPUs) and even a full-blown M.2 to x16 PCIe slot adapter. The nice thing about this is that if you do not care about using WiFi with a system, but you do have one of those ports lounging about uselessly, you could put it to work for Ethernet, SFP, SATA or other purposes, or just for hooking up internal USB devices.

Clearly this isn’t a market that has gone unexploited for very long, with a bright outlook for one’s self-designed M.2 cards. Who doesn’t want an FPGA device snuggled in a PCIe x2 slot to tinker with?

Galaxy Z Fold 5 could get a major camera boost, built-in S Pen slot

Last updated: January 16th, 2023 at 06:04 UTC+01:00

There is some spicy news for an upcoming Samsung smartphone. No, it isn’t the soon-to-be-launching Galaxy S23 series, which is all set to debut on February 1. The rumors are about the Galaxy Z Fold 5, which is expected to launch in the second half of 2023. Going by the rumor, the Galaxy Z Fold 5, could come with a 108MP primary rear camera.

According to a new report by the Vietnamese publication The Pixel, Samsung might ditch the 50MP camera for the 108MP primary camera, which is currently found on the Galaxy S22 Ultra. This, in turn, would make the device a bit heavier, and it will weigh around 275 grams (which is a little hard to believe). For comparison’s sake, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 weighs 263 grams.

Galaxy Z Fold 5 rumored to get a 108MP main camera and 64MP telephoto camera

This increase in weight will be partly because of the new 108MP camera that the rumors are leaning towards. This is great news (although it isn’t anything concrete, and is just a rumor), especially since foldable phones are often criticized for their less-than-stellar camera performance. Not that they are bad by any means, they just aren’t at the level of the premium slab phones but are priced higher than them.

Not only the Galaxy Z Fold 5 main camera but the telephoto camera is also rumored to get a boost. As per reports, the main 108MP snapper will be accompanied by a 64MP camera with 2x optical zoom and a 12MP ultrawide shooter on the Galaxy Z Fold 5. But one should take this piece of information with a pinch of salt since Samsung upgraded the cameras on the Galaxy Z Fold 4 last year. The company’s track record indicates that we shouldn’t expect a major camera revision two years in a row.

Other details about the Galaxy Z Fold 5 include that the phone will come with a dedicated slot for the S-Pen, and is implementing a new hinge design to decrease the screen crease and let the phone fold completely flat.

Android swings + slot machines [Video]

Google is back at CES for the first time in several years. To highlight several of the big software announcements, there’s a huge Android booth for attendees to visit. Not everyone is able to attend CES in Las Vegas, but we’ve made things a little easier by touring it for you.

The space just outside the Las Vegas Convention Center is home to Google for CES 2023, but it also is most certainly a vehicle for the Android operating system. Most importantly, there’s room for plenty of “Bugdroid” in all forms and finishes.

Before the booth opened to the public, Google gave selected media (including 9to5Google) a chance for a sneak peek inside the dedicated Android booth for CES 2023. There were plenty of demos for features like enhanced group Nearby Share, cross-device audio switching, improved Android Auto redesign, and even a brief demo of the smart home Matter quick connection in action. If you have a Pixel Watch, you’ll soon be able to keep your phone unlocked so long as your wearable is nearby. This was showcased in a neat throwback “slide to unlock” setup.

The CES booth has plenty of room for some Google Assistant action plus the deeper Fitbit integration with your Pixel Watch and Pixel phone. All of this was wrapped up in typically Googley color schemes and a little bit of Material You plus a Bugdroid-themed swing seat to chill on.

To top the whole thing off, there was even a Fast Pair-powered slot machine that dispensed candy-filled gacha pods in the classic Google green color. You don’t need to miss out, check out our brief first-person tour of Google’s Android CES booth down below:

Samsung aims to add S Pen slot to its future Galaxy Z Fold phones

Last updated: November 2nd, 2022 at 06:12 UTC+01:00

Samsung is, without a doubt, the undisputed king of foldable smartphones. The Galaxy Z Flip and the Galaxy Z Fold series of smartphones are the most successful foldable phones across the globe. And Samsung’s mobile business expects that the foldable smartphone market will grow by 80% by 2025.

During a meeting conducted by Samsung MX (via TheElec) in the third week of October 2022, parts suppliers were told that the foldable smartphone market will have an annual growth rate of up to 80% by 2025. Moreover, the company also added that it expects tech giant Apple to join the foldable space in 2024. However, entry will be with notebooks and tablets first and not with smartphones.

In the South Korean market, Samsung shared that the youth in their 20s and 30s were changing their devices from Apple to Samsung foldable phones. This is “at a rate three to four times higher than before.

Samsung thinks foldable phones need to get thinner, lighter, and have less crease

Samsung also believes that 90% of foldable smartphone users will stick with the new form factor and will purchase a foldable smartphone as their next device. Industry sources reveal that the foldable smartphone market is a mere 1% of the total smartphone market. However, customers are showing high satisfaction levels towards foldable smartphones, and the sector is expected to grow “substantially.

There are a few things that Samsung also noted that need to be revamped for foldable phones to become more popular. Notably, the size and weight of the foldable phones need to go down, they need to become more durable, and the crease on the screen needs to be reduced.

Also, there needs to be a slot for the S-Pen, as they are the ultimate productivity handheld devices. This is a feature that a lot of consumers are asking for. The company also wants to add improved cameras to its future foldable phones. Apparently, the company wanted to add flagship cameras to the Galaxy Z Fold 4, but it didn’t due to weight issues. Samsung also stressed the development of software that fits the 4:3 ratio screen on the fold series.

AMD B650E Chipset Motherboards To Offer PCIe Gen 5.0 Slot & PCIe Gen 5.0 M.2 At Mainstream Prices

AMD is working on four 600-series chipsets for its AM5 platform which includes X670E, X670, B650E & B650 motherboards. While X670E & X670 have been the main talk and B650 has been official, the latest leaks bring us the final confirmation of the B650E chipset too.

AMD B650E Chipset Motherboards: Bringing PCIe Gen 5.0 Slot & Gen 5.0 M.2 Support At Mainstream Prices

We reported back at Computex 2022 that the B650E series motherboards offer more PCB layers to efficiently offer better signaling due to PCIE’s rigid Gen5 protocol specifications. Right now, there is the Extreme X670 chipset has been announced officially, adding to the capability of PCIe Gen 5 slot for graphics support and PCIe Gen 5 M.2 for storage.

In an internal presentation leaked by @wxnod, we can see that a manufacturer has listed the B650E (E For Extreme) chipset in one of its slides. The main advantage of B650E motherboards will be that since they feature a singular Promontory 21 chipset, they will definitely be aimed at the mainstream consumer segment with more affordable prices compared to the X670E and the X670 lineup.

While losing a Promontory 21 chipset will lead to decreased I/O capabilities, this implementation will allow for more feasible mATX and mITX designs. We have seen ASUS’s ROG Maximus X670E Gene and ROG STRIX X670E-I Gaming WiFi which feature an mATX & mITX design, respectively.

Both motherboards are based on the X670E chipset which means that they will be priced higher. But a board with a B650E chipset can retain the two most crucial aspects of the Extreme series platform and that’s support for a PCIe Gen 5.0 slot and PCIe Gen 5.0 M.2. At the same time, the pricing compared to the standard B650 (Non-E) motherboards will be slightly higher for the B650E offerings considering they will pack more PCB layers to support the necessary signaling interface for Gen 5 slot and M.2 support.

B650E will give AMD an edge in the mainstream segment where they do lack DDR4 support versus the Intel offerings but having proper Gen 5 slot and M.2 port support can have better longevity, especially considering that Gen 5 SSDs and the DirectStorage API are going to be a major deal in the upcoming years.

There have so far been no product announcements regarding either, the B650E or B650 boards. But, we expect to see products in October as they were previously meant to launch in early Q4 2022. Till then, you can feast your eyes upon the various yet more expensive X670E offerings in our roundup here. AMD will be hosting its official Ryzen 7000 & AM5 unveil in a few hours so make sure you tune in with us during the Livestream here.

Apple Allegedly Preparing for iPhones Without SIM Card Slot by September 2022

Earlier this week, a rumor from Brazilian website Blog do iPhone claimed that iPhone 15 Pro models might not have a physical SIM card slot in at least some countries and regions, but the change might happen even sooner.

Image: iFixit

An anonymous tipster informed MacRumors that Apple has advised major U.S. carriers to prepare for the launch of eSIM-only smartphones by September 2022. The tipster shared a seemingly legitimate document outlining the timeframe for this initiative, although the document does not specifically mention Apple or the iPhone.

As part of the transition, some U.S. carriers will allegedly start offering select iPhone 13 models without a nano-SIM card in the box in the second quarter of 2022. iPhone 13 models sold at Apple Stores or on Apple.com already lack a nano-SIM card in the box, with users typically able to activate a cellular plan via eSIM by turning on the iPhone, connecting to a Wi-Fi network, and following the on-screen instructions.

Given the alleged September 2022 deadline, it is possible that Apple might remove the physical SIM card slot starting with some iPhone 14 models, rather than some iPhone 15 models as originally rumored, but nothing is definitive at this point.

An eSIM is a digital SIM that allows users to activate a cellular plan without having to use a nano-SIM card. It’s worth noting that eSIM service is not available in all countries, so iPhones with a SIM card slot may remain available in some markets. Adoption is expanding rapidly, though, with over 100 carriers offering eSIM service worldwide and more planning to roll out support in 2022, including Three in the UK and Vodafone in New Zealand.

iPhone 13 models already support multiple eSIM profiles, allowing users to subscribe to several cellular plans digitally and switch between them, and this functionality could pave the way for the SIM card slot’s removal in select countries.

Apple’s former design chief Jony Ive once envisioned the iPhone as becoming a “single slab of glass,” and the SIM card slot’s removal would be another step towards a seamless design and improve water resistance in the process. Taking out the slot would also free up some valuable internal space in the iPhone — every bit counts.
