Sort of PS5 Slim: No hardware upgrades and no disc drive compatibility with PlayStation 5 Digital Edition for the modular PS5 “Gen 2” console

There might be some considerable criticism heading Sony’s way soon if new details about the so-called modular PS5 shared by Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson are true. The source has frequently discussed upgrades and changes to the PlayStation 5, and he revealed that there was work ongoing with a console that would have a detachable disk drive, which will eventually replace the current PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition devices. This “PS5 Gen 2” would have a slimmer profile thanks to its modular nature, so it could even end up being the widely expected PS5 Slim.

While official word about a PS5 Slim would undoubtedly excite the community, Henderson’s latest tweet about PlayStation matters will likely not. Firstly, he states, “doesn’t seem like there are any major hardware changes from the original console”. So, this apparent PS5 v2 device will clearly not be any kind of PS5 Pro machine, and it won’t be the frequently rumored console coming with an improved custom SoC from AMD inside it. A sort of PlayStation 5 Slim console may be the best fans can hope for in regard to something new turning up in 2023.

However, Henderson rubs salt into the wound with the second part of his post, claiming, “disc drive likely won’t be compatible with the current digital version”. So, all those PlayStation 5 Digital Edition owners out there, and there are millions of them, may feel a pang of disappointment and even disapproval that this modular next-generation PS5 will be incapable of sharing its detachable disc drive with them. Some commenters have even called this potential situation a kind of money grab from Sony.

According to the source, production of this PlayStation 5 revision will start in April, and it could be available to buy in September. This means there will be a lot more leaks about the device to come yet, and it seems likely that Sony will make sure a PS5 Gen 2 will have plenty of selling points. If this rumored 2023 variant actually does end up being the PS5 Slim, there will still be many flocking to buy a slimmed-down and lighter PlayStation 5 console, regardless of it having a detachable and backwards incompatible disc drive.

GOP Gains College-Educated and Minority Voters in Slim House Pickup

In making modest gains in House seats this year, Republicans drew more support from minority and college-educated voters than in other recent elections, chipping away at important pillars of the Democratic coalition in ways that could better position the party for the next election.

Republicans narrowed the Democratic advantage among Latino voters, Black voters and white women with college degrees—important components of the Democratic voter pool—according to AP VoteCast, a large survey of midterm participants. GOP House candidates won a majority of white women in the nation’s suburbs, a swing group that helped power the Democratic Party to its House majority in 2018 and backed President Biden in 2020.

What did the results of the midterms tell you about the makeup of the GOP today? Join the conversation below.

“The numbers indicate that our party has been more successful than we previously knew in getting voters of color moving to the GOP,’’ said Neil Newhouse, a veteran pollster who led polling for several GOP presidential nominees. “Ever since I got involved in politics more than 40 years ago, that’s been a long-term goal of the party.”

The voter shifts helped Republicans win a majority of House votes nationally, preliminary results show, but weren’t strong enough to bring the party substantial gains in House seats. Republicans have so far lost a net of one seat in the Senate, with the final tally to be decided in Georgia’s runoff election next month. Still, the gain among these groups “tells me that Republicans are potentially well-positioned to win a national election, if we can replicate this,’’ Mr. Newhouse said.

Ruy Teixeira, a demographer at the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank, said the shift among Latino voters was particularly noteworthy and extends a move toward the GOP that was a feature of the last two presidential elections. “They lost quite a bit among Latinos, and the swing was significant,” he said.

Many caveats apply in drawing lessons from a midterm election. Far fewer voters participate than in a presidential contest. The voter shifts detected by AP VoteCast varied widely by state and by whether an election had the potential to restrict legalized abortion. Voters’ choices this year might have been driven more by their views of former President

Donald Trump

and of candidates who copied his style of politics, than by their views of the two parties. Mr. Trump is now a declared candidate for the GOP presidential nomination in 2024.

The AP VoteCast survey, which included more than 94,000 midterm voters nationwide, found a number of significant shifts in voter preferences:

—Latino voters favored Democratic House candidates by 17 percentage points—giving 56% support to Democrats and 39% to Republicans—a far slimmer lead than the 28-point edge that helped President Biden win in 2020 or the 34-point Democratic advantage in the last midterm elections, in 2018.

—Black voters gave 14% of their support to GOP House candidates, compared with 8% in the elections of two and four years ago.

—White women with college degrees, who had backed Democrats by 19 points in the last midterms and by 21 points in the 2020 presidential election, tipped toward Democrats by a far narrower 6 points this year.

—Republicans won an outright majority of white women in the suburbs, carrying the group by 6 percentage points. Suburban white women had backed Mr. Biden by 5 points, and Democratic House candidates in 2018 by 7 points. Female voters overall, who account for over half the electorate, favored Democrats by a single percentage point, down from 12 points and 15 points in the last two elections, respectively.

Some Democrats cautioned that little could be read into results from a midterm election with special conditions. The fate of legalized abortion was a pressing issue in some states, which helped Democratic candidates, and was less salient in others.

“I’m skeptical, because it wasn’t a national presidential election, and because you have such differences state by state,’’ said Elaine Kamarck, a veteran of the Clinton administration White House who is now a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.

Analysts said that more data were needed to better understand what the variations among voter groups from state to state meant to the election outcomes. Some early clues suggest that the Latino voter shift boosted the GOP vote share in some House races, even if the shift didn’t produce a victory.

In some Latino-rich House districts in California, Democratic candidates won their elections with far smaller vote margins than the party produced two years earlier. Rep.

Norma Torres

of Southern California, for example, won by 12 points in preliminary results in a district that Mr. Biden carried by 28 points.

Republicans cut into Democratic margins in two heavily Latino House districts in South Texas. Democratic Rep.

Vicente Gonzalez

won re-election by 8 points in a district that Mr. Biden had carried by 15 points, while Republican Monica De La Cruz won in a newly created district by 9 points, which Mr. Trump had carried by 3 points.

In a third South Texas House district, Democratic Rep.

Henry Cuellar

won re-election by a larger margin than Mr. Biden won in 2020.

Carlos Odio, co-founder of Equis Research, a Democratic-aligned firm that focuses on Latino voters, said the Hispanic vote varied significantly by state.

“Florida was an unmitigated disaster for Democrats across the board. But it is especially true among Latino voters,’’ he said. Republicans won a majority of the Hispanic vote for the first time since 2006, Mr. Odio said. Republicans carried heavily Latino Miami-Dade County, the state’s largest, “something that was unthinkable in the Obama era,’’ he said.

Republicans boosted their share of voters who don’t have a four-year college degree. They also dominated among white voters in rural areas and small towns, winning a commanding 70% of those voters—producing an advantage of about 40 points—compared with leads of about 30 points two years and four years ago.

The AP VoteCast survey was conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago for The Wall Street Journal, the Associated Press and Fox News.

Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon platform is built for slim augmented reality glasses

If companies are going to make augmented reality glasses you’d actually want to wear, they’ll need chips that are powerful but won’t require a large battery on your head. Qualcomm thinks it can help. The company has unveiled a Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1 platform that’s built with slim AR glasses in mind. The multi-chip design reportedly delivers 2.5 times the AI performance of the company’s XR2-based reference design while using half the power. You could have eyewear that intelligently detects objects in the room while remaining slim and light enough to use for hours at a time.

Part of the trick is to spread the computing load across the glasses’ frame, Qualcomm says. The primary, 4nm-based AR processor includes a CPU, Tensor AI processing, graphics and engines for features like visual analytics. It can support up to nine simultaneous cameras for tracking both your body and the world around you. A co-processor elsewhere in the glasses includes an AI accelerator for tasks like eye tracking and computer vision, while a third chip handles connectivity to networks and phones. This not only better-balances the weight, but leads to smaller circuit boards and fewer wires than you’d see with a single do-it-all chip.

That networking is also important, Qualcomm says. Like Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in phones, AR2 Gen 1 is one of the first platforms to support WiFi 7. That’s crucial not just to provide the gobs of bandwidth for connecting to a handset (up to 5.8Gbps), but to reduce latency (under 2ms to your phone, according to Qualcomm). Combined with lag reduction in the processor and co-processor, you should have a more natural-feeling and responsive experience.

Hardware built on AR2 Gen 1 is in “various stages” of progress at multiple well-known companies, including Lenovo, LG, Nreal, Oppo and Xiaomi. Importantly, Microsoft had a hand in the platform requirements. Don’t be surprised if you’re one day using AR2 for virtual collaboration in Mesh, not to mention other Microsoft apps and services.

Qualcomm has also introduced meaningful updates to its audio technology. New S3 Gen 2 Sound and S5 Gen 2 Sound platforms promise to make the latest listening tech more commonplace, including spatial audio with head tracking, lower latency for games and the latest take on adaptive active noise cancellation (think of the transparency modes found on some earbuds). You won’t see real-world products until the second half of 2023, but these chips could democratize features that were previously reserved for pricier buds and headphones.

Even SLIM type 2 diabetics can reverse their condition

Even SLIM type 2 diabetics can reverse their condition with ‘game-changing’ soup and shake diet: Top experts say patients just need to lose 10% of their body weight

  • This is the equivalent of someone with a 13st (83kg) frame losing 1st 4lbs (8kg)
  • Newcastle Uni scientists presented findings at a medical conference in Sweden
  • They said findings support the idea that everyone has a ‘personal fat threshold’

Even slim people with type 2 diabetes can reverse their condition through a soup and shakes diet, researchers revealed today.

And they only need to lose 10 per cent of their body weight, experts believe.

This is the equivalent of someone with a 13st (83kg) frame losing 1st 4lbs (8kg).

Newcastle University scientists say the findings, presented at a medical conference in Sweden, support the idea that everyone has a ‘personal fat threshold’.

Type 2 diabetes affects roughly 4.5million people in Britain and 37million in the US. Although heavily driven by obesity, roughly 15 per cent of all sufferers are of ‘normal weight’ (stock)

Professor Roy Taylor, a world renowned diabetes expert and lead researcher, said: ‘If you develop type 2 diabetes, you simply have more fat inside your body than you can cope with, even if apparently slim.

‘This excess fat spills into your liver and pancreas stopping normal function and causing type 2 diabetes.

‘You only need an extra half gram of fat in the pancreas to prevent normal insulin production.

‘I’m often asked, “Why have I got type 2 diabetes when all my friends are larger than me and do not have diabetes?” The present work answers this conundrum.’

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body doesn’t make enough insulin, or if the insulin it makes doesn’t work properly — leading to high blood sugar levels.

What IS type 2 diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is a condition which causes a person’s blood sugar to get too high.

More than 4million people in the UK are thought to have some form of diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is associated with being overweight and you may be more likely to get it if it’s in the family.

The condition means the body does not react properly to insulin – the hormone which controls absorption of sugar into the blood – and cannot properly regulate sugar glucose levels in the blood.

Excess fat in the liver increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes as the buildup makes it harder to control glucose levels, and also makes the body more resistant to insulin.

Weight loss is the key to reducing liver fat and getting symptoms under control.

Symptoms include tiredness, feeling thirsty, and frequent urination.

It can lead to more serious problems with nerves, vision and the heart.

Treatment usually involves changing your diet and lifestyle, but more serious cases may require medication.

Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to blindness and leave patients needing their limbs amputated or in a coma.

It affects roughly 4.5million people in Britain and 37million in the US.

Although heavily driven by obesity, roughly 15 per cent of all sufferers are of ‘normal weight’.

This puts them in the group known as TOFIs – who are ‘thin on the outside and fat on the inside’.

TOFIs are not usually advised to lose weight, with doctors under the belief that their condition has another cause.

But the new findings prove that guidance — which has been pushed out for years — is wrong.

Twenty participants were recruited for the study. They had an average BMI of 24.8 — defined as a ‘healthy’ weight.

All of the volunteers were asked to stick to a daily 800 calorie regime for a fortnight, consisting of low-calorie shakes and soups.

A similar diet, labelled ‘game-changing’, has been shown to help overweight type 2 diabetics reverse their condition. The results have even seen NHS doctors prescribe soup and shakes to help obese Britons slim down.

Participants were then allowed to ditch the soups and shakes but eat sensibly for up to six weeks, so they didn’t pile on the pounds again.

The cycle was repeated up to three times, until they lost at least 10 per cent of their body weight.

Fourteen volunteers went into remission, allowing them to ditch all their medication.

Reversal was defined as blood sugar levels staying below the technical threshold for diabetes for at least six months.

Their average BMI fell to 22.4.

Meanwhile, MRI scans showed levels of fat inside their liver and pancreas had fallen ‘substantially’.

The findings were presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) in Stockholm.

Marathon runner who was diagnosed with diabetes is now in remission after soups and shakes diet

Having recently run his first marathon, David Childs seemed an unlikely candidate for type 2 diabetes.

But he was diagnosed in June 2020 after suffering severe daily headaches and fainting, because his blood sugar had become too high.

Having recently run his first marathon, David Childs seemed an unlikely candidate for type 2 diabetes. But he was diagnosed in June 2020 after suffering severe daily headaches and fainting, because his blood sugar had become too high

Mr Childs, 48, signed up to the ReTUNE trial to reverse type 2 diabetes last March, as one of around 10 per cent of people with the condition who are a healthy weight.

The father-of-four, from the village of Cleadon in South Tyneside, said: ‘Even my GP did not believe I had type 2 diabetes at first.

‘I don’t have a family history of diabetes, I am slim, and I had recently run a marathon, after several half-marathons.

‘But unfortunately, while I didn’t have a beer belly, I did have excess fat in my liver.

‘I was determined to get off the tablets I had been given and reverse it if I could.’

Mr Childs completed two month-long diets of meal-replacement soups and shakes to lose around 10 per cent of his body weight.

That brought the 48-year-old, who is five feet 11ins tall, down to a weight of 82kg (12 stones and 13 pounds).

Mr Childs, who works for a pharmaceutical company, achieved remission from diabetes halfway through the trial and has not looked back.

He runs twice a week, tries to eat healthily and has reduced his consumption of crisps and bread.

He said: ‘I was worried my future entailed slowly increasing my medication, and being at risk of health problems from diabetes.

‘Now every morning I still prick my finger to check my blood sugar and, every time I see it is normal, I smile to myself that I don’t have diabetes any more.’
