Skull Session: Davison Igbinosun and Ja’Had Carter Are More Than Quick Fixes, Dawand Jones is a Massive Human and Ohio State Football’s Attendance Increased in 2022

Garrett Wilson needs YOU to help him win the NFL’s illustrious Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Year award.

Will YOU vote for him?

You can vote for Chris Olave while you’re at it, too. One of them will lose, which is unfortunate, but at least one Buckeye can win!

Let’s have a good Wednesday, shall we?

FILLING THE GAPS. Former Ole Miss cornerback Davison Igbinosun, the top remaining player in the transfer portal, committed to Ohio State on Tuesday in what was perhaps the biggest BOOM of the offseason for the Buckeyes.

Of course, the return of players like Steele Chambers, Miyan Williams, Cade Stover, Xavier Johnson, Tommy Eichenberg and Josh Proctor was also massive BOOMs for Ohio State. Still, something about the addition of Igbinosun – and that of safety Ja’Had Carter – speaks greater volumes to me about the direction of the defense in 2023 and beyond. And I have three reasons to believe that.

First, both of them have always been Power 5 talents. Igbinosun was a top-20 cornerback recruit in the 2022 class. Carter was ranked as the No. 2 prep school prospect in the 2020 class.

Second, both of them have already proven they can perform at the Power 5 level. Igbinosun started 10 games as a true freshman for Ole Miss, recording 37 tackles and five pass breakups. Carter started in 28 of his 31 games for Syracuse, collecting 138 tackles, five interceptions, 12 pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and a touchdown.

Third, and arguably most importantly, is the remaining eligibility both Igbinson and Carter can use as Buckeyes. Igbinson will be able to play three seasons in the scarlet and gray. Carter could play two seasons, one as a senior and another if he chooses to utilize his COVID year.

When I combine all of those points, I believe it tells me that Ryan Day and Jim Knowles wanted defensive players in the portal that were talented, experienced and, above all, here to stay.

It’s no secret the secondary was the hole in Ohio State’s defense last season, and the additions of Igbinosun and Carter aren’t some quick patch job to cover it up like something you’d see a landlord on a college campus do. No, those players are here to fill the gaps. And that should make every Buckeye fan excited as the team heads into 2023.

DAWAND JONES → THANOS. The Reese’s Senior Bowl released Dawand Jones’ measurements on Tuesday, and you have to see them to believe them.

Talk about a massive human.

Does anyone know if his birth certificate (if he even has one) is from Indianapolis, Indiana? Are we sure it doesn’t say Titan? Because I think we may be looking at Thanos disguised as an Ohio State offensive lineman.

According to The Mock Draft Database, Jones’ measurements from his weigh-in are among the best percentiles for an offensive lineman dating back to 1999, with his height (96th percentile), weight (99th), hand (98th), arm (99th) and wingspan (100th) all ranking near the top of prospects measured at the NFL combine in the last 23 years.

Jones’ wingspan of 89.5 inches is also expected to be the longest ever recorded at the NFL combine. And that checks out. His wingspan is 2.5 inches longer than NBA champion and two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, after all. And a friendly reminder that Antetokounmpo is seven feet tall and nicknamed the “Greek Freak.”

As for his hands, look at them when pressed against the hand of a “normal” human.

As for his play at the Senior Bowl, well, Jones is off to a phenomenal start. A widely projected second-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft, the buzz of his size and performance(s) in Mobile, Alabama, should only improve his draft stock, which means Ohio State could add yet another first-round selection to the record books on April 27.

TBDFITL. Attendance for Ohio State football games increased by over 8.17% from 2021 to 2022, proving that Buckeyes were out in full force to support their favorite team this past fall.

Ohio State’s regular-season finale with Michigan drew the largest attendance with 106,787 in the Shoe to witness the 118th edition of The Game. The Buckeyes’ home and season opener against Notre Dame had the second-largest attendance of 106,594.

Overall, Ohio State brought in an average of 104,663 for its eight home games in 2022, which ranked behind only Michigan (110,246) and Penn State (107,379) for the most in college football, according to 247Sports.

TOP 10 TEAMS BY AVERAGE HOME ATTENDANCE IN 2022
RANK SCHOOL AVG ATTENDANCE
1 MICHIGAN 110,246
2 PENN STATE 107,379
3 OHIO STATE 104,663
4 LSU 110,596
5 TENNESSEE 100,532
6 TEXAS 100,242
7 ALABAMA 98,981
8 TEXAS A&M 97,213
9 GEORGIA 92,746
10 FLORIDA 87,180

While Ohio State checked in at No. 3 in the rankings for 2022, the title “The Best Damn Fans in the Land” will be tested in 2023, as best-sellers like Notre Dame and Michigan aren’t on the schedule to fill seats this fall.

Penn State is the Big Ticket™. But then there’s Youngstown State, Western Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan State and Minnesota, and I think we all know those aren’t exactly Big Tickets™. Still, I have faith that Buckeye Nation will show out.

A FRIENDLY REMINDER. Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s ranking among wide receivers headed to the 2023 NFL draft has been a hot topic since early January, as some analysts have JSN as their No. 1 wideout in the class while others have him as low as No. 3.

Ohio State football and its media team weighed into the debate with a video on Tuesday. One that made its stance clear that JSN is, hands-down, the best wide receiver turning pro this year.

It would seem some have forgotten how talented Smith-Njigba is and how productive he was during his tenure as a Buckeye, namely his record-breaking sophomore season in which he collected 95 catches, 1,606 yards and nine touchdowns with Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave also demanding targets.

Still, the arguments will continue because of his hamstring injury and yadda, yadda, yadda – whatever. The bottom line is this. Whoever drafts JSN is set to receive a player with the potential to be a star at the next level. My bet is that potential turns into reality sooner rather than later.

650-pound fossil whale skull found in Maryland

A Pennsylvania family discovered a 650-lb fossil whale skull on the Chesapeake Bay in southern Maryland.

Cody Goddard, his wife, and their son were on Matoaka Beach in Calvert County when they saw a large, hardened block of sediment laying on the beach. According to the Calvert Marine Museum, the sediment had an “unusual” fossil protruding from one end.

The discovery was made in October, but due to the fossil’s sheer size, it took about two months for the fossil to be extracted.

The whale skull fossil was about five and a half feet long, 18 inches wide, and weighed approximately 650 pounds, according to the curator of paleontology at the Calvert Marine Museum, Stephen J. Godfrey.

Godfrey was contacted by Goddard about his discovery in October and worked with him to examine the large fossil.

Godfrey stated that the weight of the fossil mostly came, not from the skull itself, but from the unusual, cemented sediment that had formed around the skull.

“In a way, it created its own sarcophagus – its own little burial chamber that preserved it for millions of years and for us to be able to find,” he said.

The skull is estimated to be 12 million years old.

On Dec. 19, Godfrey and his team from the Calvert Marine Museum Fossil Club successfully removed the fossil from the beach and brought it to the bayside museum for further research.

According to Godfrey, the skull is around 12 million years old, based on the sediment age along Calvert Cliffs. The skull came from a baleen whale, a type of whale that uses its teeth to filter its prey, plankton, from ocean water.

Compared to modern baleen whales, such as humpback whales, the prehistoric whale the skull came from was quite small and narrow at 5 1/2 feet long and about 18 inches wide.

The fossil was originally discovered in October, but it took two months for it to be extracted.

Scientists will be able to determine which baleen whale species the skull belonged to after the sediment is removed.

“This would have been a very hydrodynamic type of whale, so it could probably swim fairly quickly,” Godfrey said. “And, of course, you’d want to because you have Megalodon swimming at that time, and you’re doing all you can to avoid being Megalodon’s next meal.”

Godfrey noted that the skull would be more completely analyzed in about two months, which will be the amount of time needed to remove the hardened sediment surrounding the skull.

When the skull is free of sediment, Godfrey and his team will be able to determine which baleen whale species the skull belonged to.

According to the Calvert Marine Museum, the skull — called “Cody” after Cody Goddard — is the most complete fossil whale skull ever recovered from that section of Calvert Cliffs.

Ubisoft shows off Skull and Bones’ “narrative gameplay” in new devstream

Following this week’s announcement of yet another delay for Skull and Bones, Ubisoft has shared 30 minutes of new footage from its beleaguered pirate adventure, focusing on what it calls the game’s “narrative gameplay”.

It’s perhaps something of an unexpected place to return after a lengthy absence, given Ubisoft insisted Skull and Bones was “not a narrative-driven game” last summer, but it does at least give players a better idea of how the publisher is attempting to inject a bit of variety into the action.

As Ubisoft explained last year, Skull and Bones is overwhelmingly focused on sailing and combat, with players only able to disembark their ships and explore dry land at a limited number of locations, defined as outposts. Functionally, outposts serve as places players can trade, cash in contracts, pay off factions, and meet other players – but, as detailed in Ubisoft’s latest gameplay devstream, they’re also locations where they might find narrative content Ubisoft is calling “investigations”.

Skull and Bones: The Deck – Gameplay Devstream.

Investigations are a “way to tell a story through a series of steps”, and can be initiated by discovering messages in bottles, unearthing scraps of lost journals, or simply by talking to characters in the world, and will provide clues to finding a specific treasure.

The investigation Ubisoft chose to demo in its latest devstream told the tale of a brother and sister who both believed themselves to be the rightful heir to the throne in the coastal African region the sequence was set.

Rather than taking players on a grand, cinematic narrative adventure, investigations – whose story elements are relayed entirely through on-screen text and accompanying narration – are more of a simple framing device, guiding them through several standard seafaring activities. In this instance, players must first sail to the location where the brother is said to have absconded with the crown, whereupon they’re required to complete a single stage of a settlement plunder (a core mechanic of Skull and Bones, as we learned last year) to receive another message leading to a new location.

Upon arrival, it’s simply a case of parking up alongside a shipwreck and hitting a button to retrieve the next clue, which then points players to a final location – in this case, a port where they can disembark and locate some buried treasure, bringing the sequence to a close.

Each investigation, Ubisoft explains, will fill in a little more backstory of a key character in Skull and Bones’ lore, Captain Freeman, who was said to have taken part in the biggest heist ever seen in the world’s fiction. Ultimately, by piecing together clues, players might be able to find the location of Freeman’s missing treasure.

The full 30-minute livestream also discusses some of Skull and Bones’ other features, including shanties and the variations seen in different parts of the in-game world.

Ubisoft is yet to share a new release date for Skull and Bones following its most recent delay, but says it’ll have more news “very soon”.
