Where will you go? What will you do? Whose tale will you bring to life? Every path is yours to take. Embark on an Adventure [631 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/genres/adventure”>adventure all your own.

New World, New Tales [1 article]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/companies/new-tales”>New Tales

The story takes place in Solistia, a land comprising an eastern and western continent divided by the sea.

It is a bustling era, wherein large vessels navigate busy sea routes and the power of steam gives birth to new technologies.

Some people thrill to glamorous stars of the stage and industry, while others are brought to tears by war, plague, and poverty.

In this faraway realm, eight travelers hailing from different regions venture forth for their own reasons. Step into their shoes and explore the land as you see fit.

■ Throne Anguis, the Thief (voiced by Erica Mendez in English, Rie Tanaka in Japanese)

Your name is Throne Anguis, and you are a thief. Your tale begins in a thrilling city in the Brightlands.

You are a member of the Blacksnakes, a thieves guild that controls the city from the shadows. Your job is to steal…and clean.

“Not again… Not this stench. Every time I breathe it in, it feels as though my very lungs are rotting… The stench of blood.”

Determined to escape the cycle of bloodshed, you embark on a journey for the keys to your freedom…

■ Characters in Throne’s Tale

Father (voiced by DC Douglas in English, Kenyu Horiuchi in Japanese)

One of the leaders of the Blacksnakes, and a first-rate assassin who oversees the guild’s jobs. He taught Throné the art of assassination when she was young.

Mother (voiced by Meli Grant in English, Tomie Kataoka in Japanese)

The other leader of the Blacksnakes who values order and discipline above all. She manages the guild’s members and mercilessly punishes those who fail her.

Pirro (voiced by Sean Chiplock in English, Takamasa Mogi in Japanese)

A member of the Blacksnakes. Though somewhat resigned to his life in the guild, he also dreams of rising through the ranks and earning his freedom.

Scaracci (voiced by Eliah Mountjoy in English, Ryohei Arai in Japanese)

A member of the Blacksnakes. He puts on a bold front, but secretly fears being punished by the guild.

■ Throne’s Adventure Begins in the Brightlands

Eastern Solistia is an urban region home to the continent‘s largest city. Blessed by warm sunshine and a pleasant climate, it soon became known as the Brightlands. Agricultural abundance caused the region to flourish, and people flocked here in droves. Wealth soon followed, and development soon after. Before long, buildings like theaters and game parlors were erected to entertain the evergrowing crowds, and now the light of civilization shines as bright here as the sun does overhead. At the center of all of this lies the Brightlands’ beating heart: New Delsta. In the east of these lands can be found Clockbank, an industrial center that has prospered ever since the Age of Discovery.

—The urban Brightlands region.

—New Delsta’s theater.

—The industrial town of Clockbank.

■ Throne’s Path Actions

Steal

Steal townspeople’s belongings (with a given probability). Fail, and your reputation will suffer.

—You won’t be able to use Path Actions if your reputation suffers. Raise Thronée’s level to increase her chances of success.

Ambush

Knock people unconscious. You must be the appropriate level to succeed.

—If Throne’s level is high enough, she can knock someone unconscious. This will allow you to move forward when someone is blocking your path.

■ Throne’s Talent: Blessing of Darkness

Throne can augment all allies at the start of battle at night.

—Blessing of Darkness automatically triggers at the start of battles at night. This raises the physical attack, elemental attack, and speed of all allies, allowing your party to immediately go on the offensive.

■ Throne’s Latent Power: Leave No Tract

When her latent power gauge is full, Throne can act twice in a single turn.

—Throne’s latent power allows her to act twice in a row, giving her an extra edge in battle.

—The choice is yours on how best to use the two Action [820 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/genres/action”>actions. You can go on the offensive, heal, and more.

■ Temenos Mistral, the Cleric (voiced by Jordan Dash Cruz in English, Akira Ishida in Japanese)

Your name is Temenos Mistral, and you are a cleric. Your tale begins in the mountainous region of the Crestlands.

Though easygoing in your duties as Inquisitor, that all changes the day a tragic incident takes place in the church.

“Oh dear… I suppose it can’t be helped. After all, doubt is what I do.”

Sensing that there is much more to the incident than meets the eye, you set out to solve the mystery left in its wake…

■ Characters in Temenos’ Tale

Pontiff Jorg (voiced by Jay Preston in English, Fumitake Ishiguro in Japanese)

The most prominent member of the Order of the Sacred Flame, respected by all the townspeople. He trusts Temenos and has appointed him Inquisitor.

Crick (voiced by Stephen Fu in English, Junya Enoki in Japanese)

A newly anointed Sanctum Knight. He meets Temenos after being tasked with guarding the cathedral, and together they investigate the strange incident within.

■ Temenos’ Adventure Begins in the Crestlands

Northeast Solistia, a land of mountains and hills. Perched high atop one stony peak rises Aelfric Cathedral [3 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/games/cathedral”>Cathedral, the center of the Sacred Flame faith. Adherents of this religion’s tenets have worshipped the Sacred Flame that the cathedral houses since time immemorial. Even through the bitterly cold winter a century previous, the flame continued to warm the hearts and souls of all who visited. In both name and spirit, the Sacred Flame and its church are the divine lords of this land. At the base of the cathedral lies the small town of Flamechurch. Though its population is small, the townsfolk make a good living providing for the crowds of pilgrims who travel here to visit the cathedral.

—The mountainous Crestlands.

—Aelfric Cathedral.

—Flamechurch.

■ Temenos’ Path Actions

Guide

Lead a townsperson around. You must be the appropriate level to succeed.

—If Temenos’ level is high enough, he can Guide someone and even summon them to aid him in battle.

Coerce

Force information out of someone by breaking them in battle.

—Lower your foe’s Shield Points to 0 to break them and obtain the information you seek. You won’t need to defeat your target, so focus on exploiting their weak points.

■ Temenos’ Talent: Moonlight Judgment

Temenos can enfeeble all foes at the start of battle at night.

—Moonlight Judgment automatically triggers at the start of battles at night. This blinds foes, which lowers their accuracy and safeguards your party from oncoming attacks. It also decreases foes’ physical and elemental defense, giving you the upper hand.

Temenos’ Latent Power: Judgment

When his latent power gauge is full, Temenos can lower foes’ Shield Points with any attack.

—On the turn Judgment is activated, all of Temenos’ attacks will lower enemy Shield Points. Combine this with boosted attacks or multiple-hit skills and he can break an enemy in a single turn.

■ Secondary Jobs

Each traveler sets out with a primary job, which they can combine with a secondary job in battle as their journey progresses.

Changing your secondary job also changes the weapons and skills at your disposal.

—The more weapons you can use, the easier it will be to break an opponent. This will also drastically increase your power on the battlefield.

—The choice is yours as to whether you develop your travelers’ strengths, compensate for their weaknesses, or something else entirely.

Obtaining Secondary Jobs

You can obtain licenses at various guilds throughout the world for basic jobs like Warrior and Dancer. Fulfill the guilds’ requests and you can obtain up to three licenses, allowing multiple travelers to use the same secondary job.

—Some guilds operate openly in towns, while others are hidden away. Search every corner of the world to find them all.

—Special jobs require a unique item known as “proof” to be used in battle. Only a single traveler can use one of these powerful jobs at a time, so choose wisely.

■ Support Skills

Learn job skills to unlock support skills. Each traveler can equip up to four of these valuable skills that trigger automatically.

—Learn job skills to unlock support skills. Each traveler can equip up to four of these valuable skills that trigger automatically.

—Combine different jobs’ support skills, like Summon Strength and Eagle Eye, to further strengthen your travelers.

—Some support skills can be used outside of battle, like Evasive Maneuvers and Vigorous Victor.

■ Crossed Paths: Throne and Temenos

This installment includes Crossed Paths, which are stories involving two travelers.

Throne and Temenos return to Flamechurch. Throne recalls a rumor she heard of a treasure inside the cathedral and asks Temenos if he would like to do a little investigating…

New Treatment Significantly Improves Social Skills and Brain Function

The researchers anticipate that the study’s success will have positive implications for clinical treatment.

The treatment caused neurological changes, including a decrease in inflammation and an increase in functionality, according to the researchers.

A recent Tel Aviv University study found that pressure chamber therapy greatly improved social skills and the condition of the autistic brain. The research was carried out on autism animal models. The researchers discovered changes in the brain, including a decrease in neuroinflammation, which has been linked to autism. Furthermore, the social functioning of the animal models treated in the pressure chamber improved significantly. The success of the research has significant implications for the applicability and understanding of pressure chamber therapy as a treatment for autism.

Inbar Fischer, a Ph.D. student in Dr. Boaz Barak’s lab at Tel Aviv University’s Sagol School of Neuroscience and School of Psychological Sciences, led the team that made the discovery. The findings were recently published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences.

According to Fischer and Barak, hyperbaric medicine is a kind of treatment in which patients are treated in special chambers where the atmospheric pressure is greater than the pressure we experience at sea level, and they are also given 100% oxygen to breathe. Hyperbaric medicine is already being used to treat a wide range of medical conditions and is considered to be safe. Scientific evidence has accumulated in recent years that certain protocols of hyperbaric treatments boost the supply of blood and oxygen to the brain, thereby increasing brain function.

Dr. Barak: “The medical causes of autism are numerous and varied, and ultimately create the diverse autistic spectrum with which we are familiar. About 20 percent of autistic cases today are explained by genetic causes, that is, those involving genetic defects, but not necessarily ones that are inherited from the parents. Despite the variety of sources of autism, the entire spectrum of behavioral problems associated with it are still included under the single broad heading of ‘autism,’ and the treatments and medications offered do not necessarily correspond directly to the reason why the autism developed.”

In the preliminary phase of the study, a girl carrying the mutation in the SHANK3 gene, which is known to lead to autism, was treated by Prof. Shai Efrati, director of the Sagol Center for Hyperbaric Medicine at the Shamir “Assaf Harofeh” Medical Center, a faculty member at the Sagol School of Neuroscience, and a partner in the study. Upon completing a series of treatments in the pressure chamber, it was evident that the girl’s social abilities and brain function had improved considerably.

In the next stage, and in order to comprehend the success of the treatment more deeply, the team of researchers at Dr. Barak’s laboratory sought to understand what being in a pressurized chamber does to the brain. To this end, the researchers used adult animal models carrying the same genetic mutation in the SHANK3 gene as that carried by the girl who had been treated. The experiment comprised a protocol of 40 one-hour treatments in a pressure chamber, which lasted several weeks.

Dr. Barak: “We discovered that treatment in the oxygen-enriched pressure chamber reduces inflammation in the brain and leads to an increase in the expression of substances responsible for improving blood and oxygen supply to the brain, and therefore brain function. In addition, we saw a decrease in the number of microglial cells, immune system cells that indicate inflammation, which is associated with autism.

“Beyond the neurological findings we discovered, what interested us more than anything was to see whether these improvements in the brain also led to an improvement in social behavior, which is known to be impaired in autistic individuals,” adds Dr. Barak.

“To our surprise, the findings showed a significant improvement in the social behavior of the animal models of autism that underwent treatment in the pressure chamber compared to those in the control group, who were exposed to air at normal pressure, and without oxygen enrichment. The animal models that underwent treatment displayed increased social interest, preferring to spend more time in the company of new animals to which they were exposed in comparison to the animal models from the control group.”

Inbar Fischer concludes: “The mutation in the animal models is identical to the mutation that exists in humans. Therefore, our research is likely to have clinical implications for improving the pathological condition of autism resulting from this genetic mutation, and likely also of autism stemming from other causes. Because the pressure chamber treatment is non-intrusive and has been found to be safe, our findings are encouraging and demonstrate that this treatment may improve these behavioral and neurological aspects in humans as well, in addition to offering a scientific explanation of how they occur in the brain.”

The No. 1 thing that sets ‘SuperAgers’ apart from people with ‘weak memory skills’

There is a group of people that longevity researchers call “SuperAgers,” who are in their 80s and beyond, but have the cognitive function of those decades younger.

Conversely, it’s possible for your brain to be older than your chronological age, which is what we want to avoid.

As a neuroscience researcher and author of “The Age-Proof Brain,” I’ve found that it’s our behaviors, not just our genes, that have a powerful impact on our brain’s destiny.

So what sets SuperAgers apart from people who have weak memory skills? According to a 2021 study that followed SuperAgers over the course of 18 months, one key differentiator was that they kept learning new things throughout their life.

SuperAgers learn something new every day

Think of the brain like a bank account. We make “deposits” — or new connections between our brain cells — by learning. Our memories are housed in these connections.

As we age, we naturally lose some of those connections. It’s like making a withdrawal every year. But the more deposits we make throughout our lives, the less our net worth is affected by these withdrawals.

One study found that adults with more years of education had more active frontal lobes when they took memory tests. Activity in the frontal lobe is associated with better memory.

But higher education isn’t the only way to maintain memory. In another study, even if individuals had lower levels of education, if they attended lectures, read, wrote and read often, they had memory scores on par with those with more education.

Which types of learning are best for brain health?

Keeping your brain healthy is not all about Sudoku, Wordle or crossword puzzles. Those can have cognitive benefits, but you are mostly exercising with the knowledge and skills you already have.

What does make significantly new connections in the brain is learning new skills and information. And the process should be challenging: SuperAgers embrace — and sometimes crave — that feeling of frustration when they learn something outside of their expertise.

‘Cross-train’ your brain

Approach learning the way you would with fitness training. You wouldn’t go to the gym and only work out your forearms. Eventually, you would look like Popeye.

The same goes for the brain. Learning a new language, for example, works out different parts of the brain than a new sport or instrument does.

You can cross-train your brain by mixing mental and physical learning activities. Get out your calendar and plan different types of activities using this plan:

  • Day 1: Learn something mentally stimulating, such as listening to a podcast or taking an online course.
  • Day 2:  Do something that requires learning through movement, such as a new sport, dance or yoga pose.
  • Day 3:  Be social. Grab coffee with a friend or go to a dinner party. Yes, social interaction is a form of learning that has been associated with staving off dementia.

No matter what it is, learning new things keeps your brain young. So if you discovered something you didn’t know before from reading this article, you’re already helping your brain age at a slower pace.

The Best Skills and Armor to Get First – God of War: Ragnarok Wiki Guide

After its opening prologue, God of War Ragnarok will quickly open up with lots of features, skills, gear, and places to explore – and it can get a bit overwhelming. This page contains some of the best skills, weapon attachments, and gear to get first to start tearing through your enemies as you explore each of Ragnarok’s various realms.

Be sure to also check out these guides next:

advertisement

Best Skills to Get First

The following are some of the most important skills you can unlock for Kratos by using experience gained from battles and completing side quests:

  • Glacial Rake – Glacial Rake is a powerful ability that you can get fairly quickly if you save your XP first. You should have enough XP (750) if you save it all until just before returning home after tracking the bear. By holding R1, Kratos drags his axe through the ground, sending forward a shockwave of ice. This attack is very fast to use, it almost always applies frost to the enemies that it strikes, and it can hit many targets in its path. You can of course choose a ranged ability like Vengeful Sickle, or more varied movement attacks like Whirling and Evasive Storm if you prefer, but this is the strongest singular skill that you can buy for the Axe when you’re starting out.

  • Hyperion Grapple – After a particularly fateful encounter with Thor, Kratos will pick up his Blades of Chaos, which grants you a whole other set of skills to unlock. There aren’t too many options here to start out with, but we recommend saving your XP after Glacial Rake and putting the points towards Hyperion Grapple (750), which you should be able to buy before your next big fight. By holding R1 when aiming, Kratos will yank himself towards enemies, rather than pulling them towards him. This inflicts a large amount of stun and also allows Kratos to get close at a moments notice. For an extra 250 Experience Points you could instead buy Blazing Surge to increase the power of your Ranged Heavy attack instead, but we think that Hyperion Grapple is an essential movement technique that offers players a lot of flexibility.

advertisement

  • Serpent’s Snare – Use the Frozen Flame you get from defeating one of the first early bosses to upgrade your axe and increase the number of skills available to you. If you only bought Glacial Rake and Hyperion Grapple, you should have just enough points to buy anything you want for the Axe. We suggest purchasing Serpent’s Snare for a satisfying and powerful heavy attack that makes your target double as a ranged frost detonation bomb. You have plenty of purchasing options at this point, so you could also get away with another Ranged or Movement ability, or perhaps another skill for the Blades of Chaos if they are your preferred weapon of choice.

  • Permafrost and Immolation – Also unlocked at weapon level 2 is Permafrost for the Leviathan Blades and Immolation for the Blades of Chaos. For those confident in their combat abilities, these skills allow your weapons to be supercharged on successive hits (so long as you don’t take any damage). You can see the circle with the weapon icon start to fill next to your health as you are successful, and a fully charged weapon will deal a ton more damage for a short duration. Even better, get the next skill in the tree when you upgrade your weapon again to press L1+Triangle when charged to expend your charge and shoot out waves of frost or explosions!
  • Watchful Protector – At this same time, you will finally have enough points to unlock something for Atreus. His skill tree is quite small at the moment, so you may choose to save his XP and buy something more powerful later on, but we would suggest buying the first upgrade here, Watchful Protector. This allows Atreus to distract enemies if Kratos is becoming overwhelmed, which can give you enough breathing room to finish a tough fight.

Best Armor to Get First

  • A New Shield – Once you visit Sindri’s House for the first time, there are a number of things you can do. First on the list is Brok’s kind offer to make you a new shield while he repairs your Guardian Shield, and you have two options to pick from. The Dauntless Shield is the classic God of War 2018 experience, rewarding parries for last-second blocks. By comparison, the Stone Wall shield cannot parry enemies, but it absorbs damage from normal and even Yellow attacks. When you charge either shield by parrying or absorbing damage, you can unleash that energy at your enemies by double tapping L1. If you’re looking for a more straightforward defending experience, we recommend the Stone Wall shield to start with. The upcoming enemies have some unpredictable parry timings and ranged attacks, so you may be grateful for the extra defense from the Stone Wall. Otherwise, take the Dauntless shield if you want a more risk vs reward approach, as its parry attacks can not only stagger enemies but send them flying when you unleash a shield bash in response!

advertisement

  • Offensive or Defensive Armor – While you’re talking to Brok, you can also have a look at his available Armor. You probably only have enough Hacksilver to purchase one set at level 1, but here’s what you can expect from each set of gear when it is one level stronger and it gains an extra perk. The Fortified Husk set strengthens Kratos’ blocks and parries, adding a chance for you to retaliate against your foes with an explosive counterattack. The Vidar’s Might set is all about dealing more damage at the end of a combo, and empowering Kratos to do more damage after for a period of time. Both sets are viable options, but if we had to recommend one over the other, the Fortified Husk set will keep your health above 0 for longer as you learn the combat systems. Whatever you choose though, try to wear only a single set rather than mixing and matching, as the effects of each piece of armor compound to work stronger together when equipped at the same time.

Note that your starting gear doesn’t look like much, but with enough upgrading it will eventually massively boost your stats across the board. This makes it a decent armor to come back to later in the game, but you may want to amass a lot of late game resources first!

  • Nidavellir’s Finest Armor – Strength and Defense are great, but if you find yourself constantly at low health, stopping to take on one of Svartalfheim’s first side quest is a must. By destroying the Mining Rigs in the Bay of Bounty for the In Service of Asgard Favor, you’ll earn unique resources to craft a set of Nidavellir’s Finest, which greatly increases your Vitality, and allows for additional health boosts when grabbing stunned enemies. The bracers and waist give you more time to get over and grab enemies for said health boost, but you can also mix the chest armor with the other armor sets to get a nice mix with your vitality boost.

  • Armor of Radiance – Just a bit further into the game you’ll revisit the realm of the elves in Alfheim. After the story quest is complete here, you’ll be prompted to explore a large desert to the north that’s home to a lot of optional content. Exploring the barrens will net you a new set of gear from various legendary chests: the Shoulder Straps, Gauntlets, and Belt of Radiance. Both the wrists and waist can cause your last-second dodges to activate a Realm Shift, which slows down everyone for a second and lets you get off some major counterattacks. Coupled with the chest gear’s chance to give you a runic blessing on these dodges, you can obliterate any enemy with a well-placed dodge and counterattack!

Best Weapon Attachments to Get First

advertisement

  • The Furious Maul – You won’t have many Leviathan Axe handles to choose from early on, so we recommend upgrading The Furious Maul grip that you equip after meeting Thor for the time being. This is as good a time as any to mention that unlike the first game, you can keep your starting equipment and upgrade it all the way through to the end game, so feel free to experiment with new items you find, or keep upgrading the stuff you like.

  • Cursed Empress Handles – Once in the Bay of Bounty, beach on the central island and go to the West of Sindri’s shop. Here you’ll fight a miniboss Draugr known as The Hateful, and once defeated it will drop a number of things, including the Cursed Empress Handles for your Blades of Chaos. These handles have a low chance of granting an increase to Strength and Runic damage every time you hit someone with them, while also providing a better stat increase than the basic Steel Handles you start with.
  • Rond of Aggravation – Finally, to complete your gear with a new piece of equipment in every slot, you’ll want a new Shield Rond. You need to complete the Weight of Chains Sidequest, which you can start by going to the island near the giant geyser to the North of the central island called The Watchtower. Follow the quest until you zipline over to this outcropping to the East. Open up the chest to find the Rond of Aggravation. This Rond is best suited for Parrying, as it rewards you with a Rage Burst on a successful Parry, but even if you don’t want to parry with your shield, it has excellent stat increases to Defense, Vitality and Luck, so it’s worth getting if you want to move away from basic equipment.

Eating Omega-3 Fatty Acids in Midlife May Sharpen Thinking Skills and Improve Brain Structure

Fish oil, krill oil, or cod liver oil supplements are one way to improve your intake of Omega-3 fatty acids. One of the richest dietary sources of Omega-3 is from eating cold-water fatty fish such as salmon.

People who eat more foods with omega-3 fatty acids in midlife may have superior thinking skills and even better brain structure than people who eat few foods containing the fatty acids. This is according to an exploratory study that was recently published in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish such as salmon, sardines, lake trout, and albacore tuna. They are also found in dietary supplements as well as foods that are fortified with the fatty acids.

“If people could improve their cognitive resilience and potentially ward off dementia with some simple changes to their diet, that could have a large impact on public health.” — Claudia L. Satizabal, PhD

“Improving our diet is one way to promote our brain health,” said study author Claudia L. Satizabal, PhD, of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. “If people could improve their cognitive resilience and potentially ward off dementia with some simple changes to their diet, that could have a large impact on public health. Even better, our study suggests that even modest consumption of omega-3 may be enough to preserve brain function. This is in line with the current American Heart Association dietary guidelines to consume at least two servings of fish per week to improve cardiovascular health.”

The cross-sectional study involved 2,183 people with an average age of 46 who did not have dementia or stroke. Their levels of omega-3 fatty acids were measured. They took tests that gauged their thinking skills. They had scans to measure brain volumes.

The three main omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic

“These results need to be confirmed with additional research, but it’s exciting that omega-3 levels could play a role in improving cognitive resilience, even in middle-aged people,” Satizabal said.

She noted that the study was a snapshot in time, and participants were not followed over time, so the results do not prove that eating omega-3 fatty acids will preserve brain function. It only shows an association.

While the study included a small proportion of people of many races/ethnicities, Satizabal said that the majority of the sample were non-Hispanic white adults, which may limit the ability to apply the results to other groups.

For more on this research, see Omega-3 Linked to Improved Brain Structure and Cognition.

Tactics Ogre: Reborn details skills, battlefield, Wheel of Fortune, Chariot Tarot, World Tarot, more classes and characters

Square Enix [5,007 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/companies/square-enix”>Square Enix has released new information and screenshots for Strategy RPG [121 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/genres/rpg/strategy-rpg”>strategy RPG remaster Tactics Ogre: Reborn [5 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/games/tactics-ogre-reborn”>Tactics Ogre: Reborn, which introduces the game’s skills, battlefield, Wheel of Fortune, Chariot Tarot, World Tarot, and even more classes and characters.

Get the details below.

■ Skills

As a unit’s level increases, a greater variety of skills become available for each class. You can assign a unit up to four skills, giving them unique abilities depending on the skills assigned.

Skills are categorized into four types: Action [675 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/genres/action”>Action, Support, Auto, and Special.

Action

These skills can be executed at any time, similar to a weapon attack or magic. Assigned skills appear as an action under the “Skills” menu. Action skills require MP to use. Some give weapons a 100% hit rate and guarantee critical hits, while others enable you to recruit enemy units to join your party.

Support

Simply assigning these skills provides a passive benefit to the unit. Some support skills increase max HP or MP, while others will automatically trigger counter attacks when attacked.

Auto

The effects of these skills have a chance to trigger automatically when a unit becomes active. No MP is consumed when they trigger. There are auto skills that increase MP recovery, and others that increase the distance of ranged attacks. The trigger rate of auto skills can be increased by acquiring skill trigger rate buff cards or by reaching a certain unit level.

Special

These are unique skills that only certain races can use. Assigned skills appear as an action in the “Act” menu. Special skills require MP to perform. These are skills such as breath attacks by dragon units and other damage-dealing attacks that apply debuffs.

The skills that can be acquired differ depending on the unit’s class and race. Here are some of the skills that highlight the flavor they add to each class.

Wizard

Wizards are adept at using offensive and debuff magic, so they learn skills that focus on using magic more effectively. This includes skills that restore MP or extend the range of spells, allowing units to further specialize in offensive and support magic.

Rune Fencer / Valkyrie

Rune fencers and valkyries have a variety of weapons and magic at their disposal and learn skills to support themselves during battle. This class has a good balance of offensive and defensive skills, ranging from those that support magic to those that increase resistance to debuffs.

Knight

Knights act as a shield that can hold off enemy attacks. They excel at defense and can acquire skills that reduce damage dealt to friendly units. Knights learn skills that can be relied upon for leading the way and closing in on the enemy, such as those that can stop an enemy that approaches within a certain range, or reduce damage to their allies until the next turn

Ninja / Kunoichi

Ninja and kunoichi are extremely nimble, with a long range of movement and the ability to traverse large elevation differences with ease. They acquire skills that reduce the enemy’s strength with their quick movements, such as the “Double Attack” skill that can be used when two one-handed melee weapons are equipped, and a skill that increases the hit rate of the next ninjutsu move to 100%.

■ The Battlefield

The battlefield contains various elements that affect combat, such as weather and terrain. If you can make good use of these elements, it’s possible to gain an advantage in battle.

Terrain

Aside from the interiors and exteriors of buildings, such as forts, castles, and aqueducts, there is special terrain, such as plains, snowfields, and volcanoes. There can be various types of terrain within the same battlefield that have different effects on units. A typical effect pertains to hit rate, where the terrain of the tile the unit is standing on affects the hit rate of melee and ranged attacks.

Weather

It may rain or snow on outdoor battlefields. The weather will change from time to time during battle, with rain falling heavily at times or snow ceasing. The worse the weather, the worse the visibility and the lower the accuracy of your attacks. Weather also affects the cost of movement on some terrains, affecting the maneuvering and tactics of both your army and the enemy.

Buried Treasure [12 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/companies/treasure”>Treasures

When units end their turn on certain tiles, they may find items. Items are buried in various locations, some of which can be found by destroying obstacles or by burning grass or snowfields to expose the ground.

What Happens on the Battlefield

Various events occur in battle depending on the situation, such as the appearance of units under attack and surrounded by enemies, or special conversations between certain characters. The story can change dramatically depending on your actions and choices in such situations.

—Appearance of Units in Need of Rescue

Occasionally, units under enemy attack may appear on the battlefield. If you are able to keep the unit under attack on their feet and finish the battle with the target unit alive, you may see a change in the story that follows.

—Occurrence of Special Conversations

During battles, special conversation events may occur when certain characters are present. For example, if you’re preparing for a battle with a certain character who has history with others in your party, you may want to select those characters to send into battle on the Battle Party [18 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/genres/party”>Party Screen.

Recurring Units

One way to gather new units for your party is to hire them from the shop, but you can also persuade many hostile units you meet in battle to join you and put these formerly hostile units—and their powerful skills and special moves—to use within your own army. In order to successfully recruit an enemy unit, you need a recruiting skill (an action skill) that corresponds to the unit you are recruiting, with recruiting skills of different classes needed depending on the race of the unit you’re trying to recruit.

It’s not just humans who can join your party; monsters you face in battle can be recruited and trained as well. You can change the name of a unit when you hire them in a shop, or persuade them to join you in battle.

Items Found During Battle

Battle Cards or Bags of Loot will appear in battle. You can pick up Battle Cards and Bags of Loot by moving to the tile where they appear and selecting “End Turn.”

Battle Cards: These cards have mystical powers. When acquired, the card’s effect is applied to the unit. There are three types
of card effects, as follows.

—Buff Card

These cards temporarily enhance the unit that acquires them, appearing at random after a certain amount of time passes, an obstacle is broken, or grassy or snowy fields are cleared with fire magic or the like. Acquire [276 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/companies/gungho-online-entertainment/acquire”>Acquired buff cards stack, and one unit can gain the effects of up to four cards. A unit can also hold multiple cards with the same effect. In this case, the effect increases each time. If you obtain a new buff card with four cards already stacked, the oldest card is discarded and the effect of the discarded card is lost.

—Reset Card

These cards reset the effects of any buff cards that the unit has previously acquired, appearing at random after a certain amount of time passes, an obstacle is broken, or grassy or snowy fields are cleared with fire magic or the like. The reset triggers as soon as the card is obtained and does not stack. You can use this to your advantage by knocking back enemy units to a tile with a reset card to remove their card buffs.

—Stat Card

When you defeat an enemy unit, either a stat card or a bag of loot will appear. If a stat card drops, it will permanently increase the stats of the unit that picks it up by a small amount. The effect triggers as soon as it is obtained and does not count toward the 4 buff cards a unit can hold.

Bags of Loot: Bags of loot contains the equipment and consumables used by defeated enemy units. When you acquire them, they will be added to your party’s inventory.

■ Wheel of Fortune

In Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen, the first game in the Ogre Battle Saga, the 22 major arcana tarot cards were a hallmark of the game’s tactics, visuals, and lore. Those tarot cards inspired the “Wheel of Fortune” system introduced in Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, a feature also found in this latest entry.

Using the Wheel of Fortune, you can save characters you couldn’t save before or recruit characters who didn’t join your party because of choices you made, allowing you to experience parts of the story you might not otherwise have seen.

■ The Chariot Tarot

In tactical RPG [14,497 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/genres/rpg”>RPGs, there are many situations that require a high level of concentration and patience, as the actions you choose could have irreversible negative effects on your subsequent moves. If you make a mistake, you might have to start all over again from the beginning.

In Tactics Ogre: Reborn, the Chariot Tarot allows you to go back through your previous actions and re-play from any turn of your choice. The number of moves you can rewind within a battle using the Chariot Tarot is fixed at 10 turns at the start of the game, but this will increase as the game progresses. If you want to change the outcome, rewind and try a different course of action.

■ The World Tarot

This game contains a branching story where you will often need to make key decisions that have a huge impact on how the game unfolds. However, due to the nature of the tactical RPG genre, your total playtime can become rather extensive should you try to experience the entire story. The World Tarot, which can be used after meeting certain conditions, allows you to go back in time to a specific point in the story and choose a different route than the one you have taken thus far.

“Diego may be a man of the sea, but he can hold his own on shifting deck or solid ground.”
