Eagles’ Nick Sirianni fires back at Jonathan Gannon’s critics

Nick Sirianni might have his alarm set for Monday morning already.

He can’t wait.

That’s when he’ll get to call in to the WIP Morning Show and fire back at longtime host Angelo Cataldi and anyone who has been quick to criticize defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon this season.

“Man, what did they score? 7. Yeah, big time,” Sirianni said after the Eagles’ 38-7 clobbering of the Giants in the divisional round. “Jonathan Gannon puts these guys in great positions. Obviously, we have great players. Sometimes I have to hear some things about Jonathan Gannon, and I don’t know if it’s you guys. Might be more other people. I won’t say names – Angelo — right?

“But this guy is an unbelievable coordinator. The fact that he doesn’t get respect from our radio station blows my mind. It blows my mind.”

The Eagles’ defense on Saturday night was great.

After pitching a first-half shutout, the Giants finally got on the scoreboard with a touchdown in the third quarter but drained 6:01 off the clock in the process. With a comfortable lead by that point, Gannon was probably pretty happy to trade the time for seven points in the blowout.

While Gannon has received a ton of criticism during his two years here as defensive coordinator — from more than just Cataldi — it’s hard to argue with the results or how they were attained on Saturday night.

The Eagles held the Giants to just 227 total yards. They made quarterback Daniel Jones’ night a living hell. And they never even allowed the Giants to think they had a chance of winning that game.

During the regular season, the Eagles finished with the No. 2 defense in the league, giving up 301.5 yards per game.

Sirianni said he doesn’t really listen to the criticism of Gannon until it’s brought up to him by the Eagles’ PR staff when they prep him for interviews.

“So, every time I hear an answer about Jonathan Gannon, I laugh to myself,” Sirianni said. “As a matter of fact, coaches from other teams ask me, does Jonathan Gannon get crap here? I’m like, somehow, yeah. Like this guy is incredible.

“He’s going to be a head football coach in the National Football League because of what he does. This guy is a stud. He’s a stud. I can’t wait to talk to Angelo on Monday.”

Jalen Hurts gave Eagles ‘Jordan’-like boost, Nick Sirianni says

PHILADELPHIA — Eagles coach Nick Sirianni compared Jalen Hurts to Michael Jordan when asked about the emotional lift the quarterback provided his team Saturday night in its 38-7 romp of the New York Giants in an NFC divisional round playoff game.

“I know this is high praise, but to have him out there is like having — I shouldn’t even go there — it’s like having Michael Jordan out there,” Sirianni said. “He’s your leader. He’s your guy.

“Hopefully, that’s the biggest respect I can pay to him, comparing his ability to being on the field to a Michael Jordan type. This guy leads. He brings this calmness to the entire team. He plays great football. He’s as tough as they come. To me, nobody has played any better football than him this year.”

Hurts threw for two touchdowns and ran for another despite playing through a sprained sternoclavicular (SC) joint in his throwing shoulder, an injury suffered at the Chicago Bears on Dec. 18 that sidelined him for two games.

According to the Fox broadcast, Hurts said before Saturday’s contest that he is “nowhere near 100 percent,” adding that he also came down with an illness late in the week.

“Good enough,” Hurts said when asked how he felt physically during the game.

The Eagles largely stayed away from designed runs in Hurts’ return from the injury in the regular-season finale against New York, but they dialed up six designed runs for him in the first half alone on Saturday, according to ESPN Stats & Information. The offense got back to its explosive ways, and Philadelphia racked up 268 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

The mindset of the squad was established during the week, Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert said, when Hurts addressed the players during a team meeting, telling them, “I ain’t hungry; I’m starving for this s—.”

“With everyone in the locker room, he sets the tone for it, and we follow along. Whatever he says goes. He is the leader of this place,” Goedert said. “He had it in him, so we all follow suit.”

After dropping two of their final three games to finish the regular season, the Eagles are back up and rolling just in time for next Sunday’s NFC Championship Game. They’ll face the winner of the divisional round game between the Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers.

Speaking of this Eagles team, Hurts said there is a “special type of togetherness that we have, and I don’t think it’s something that I’ve experienced quite like this — for sure on the NFL level.”

“We’re not just hungry for it; we’re starving for growth, getting better and learning from our mistakes,” he added. “I think that’s a beautiful thing, and that was a little motivation as a team. We wanted to come out and play our best ball.”

Nick Sirianni disappointed by several things from the Eagles’ loss to the Cowboys, including turnovers

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni spoke to reporters on Saturday following the team’s tough 40-34 loss to the Cowboys, and cited turnovers as a huge factor in the outcome.

“As far as the turnovers, you can’t give a good team like that the ball four times and expect to win the game. It put the defense in a tough spot, and so, disappointed in the turnovers, disappointed in some of the things we gotta do better as coaching, disappointed in some of the third down conversions by Dallas. But, credit to them, part of that too is that they’re making plays, too and they’re forcing it. So, that’s a good football team, but we can’t help a good football team beat us by giving the ball away.”

The head coach went on to explain that they made a lot of mistakes this game, and now have eight days to correct them all. That’s what he loves about this team, the willingness to go through and make those corrections.

On the QB play

“I thought Gardner [Minshew] played a good game.

On the first interception, I thought it was a really good play by 27 [Jayron Kearse], hats off to him, he’s a good player. And the second one was kind of a — the ball was in both of their hands and the guy came away with it.

So, Gardner played a really good game.”

Sirianni was non-committal about the quarterback for next week against the Saints, reiterating that he wouldn’t put anything past Jalen Hurts, who had a chance to play in this game against the Cowboys. The head coach later said that if Hurts is ready to play, he’ll play — he’s their starting QB, and if he’s ready to go, he’ll go. He made sure to point out that was not a reflection of Minshew.

On being safe for the postseason

Sirianni was asked if already clinching their spot in the playoffs took the pressure of this game and this loss, but the head coach said that they’re not thinking about that right now.

He mentioned that they need to take their lumps from this one, sit in that for a little bit, and identify all the things that went wrong. That’s how they’ll get better from it, and they’ll focus on the Saints once they make the corrections from the Cowboys game.

Other notables

  • Sirianni said it was tough to lose Avonte Maddox and they’ll have to see what happens from that. He noted that the CB is a good player and anytime you lose a player it affects things, but they have a lot of faith in his backup, Josiah Scott, as well.
  • His message to the team following the loss was that they win and celebrate together, and they also pick each up together. “Together, together, together.” Sirianni mentioned that it wasn’t one phase that let the team down, everything from coaching down impacted the outcome of the game, so they’ll work together to learn from it and get better.

Late hit on Jalen Hurts sends Nick Sirianni into a tizzy

Getty Images

Friday night’s game between the Eagles and Jets may have resulted in a serious knee injury for New York quarterback Zach Wilson. The other starting quarterback provided his team with a brief scare, too.

Jets linebacker Quincy Williams applied a massive — and late — hit to Jalen Hurts, after he scrambled out of bounds on a third-down play. Coach Nick Sirianni reacted as if he wanted to go three rounds.

After the game, Sirianni explained his outburst, which included Sirianni yelling to the other sideline, “Saleh! What the fuck?!”

“I wasn’t mad at Coach [Robert] Saleh,” Sirianni told reporters. “I was mad at the situation. I was more mad at the player, than Coach Saleh. Coach Saleh is a great guy. I have so much respect for him. It was just emotions of the game. I was just sticking up for Jalen. I’ll never apologize for sticking up for my players. I should have handled it a little bit better than I did. Obviously, I didn’t want that hit to happen on the sideline. I know it happens, and I know it’s football. I was more mad at the situation, not mad at Coach Saleh.”

Coach Saleh wasn’t happy with the play, either. Primarily because it gave the Eagles 15 yards and a fresh set of downs.

“I talked to him after the game,” Saleh told reporters. “Egregiously awful from Quincy, and he knows that. He knows better. And those are the plays that Quincy has to get out of his game if he wants to become the linebacker that I think he can be, that we all think he can be. It’s one thing to make a mistake in the game, it’s another thing to make a mistake that leads to points, touchdowns. It’s a good drive, we’re off the field, Jalen is a phenomenal quarterback, and to stop them, hold them to a field goal after giving up an explosive — pretty good showing for the first drive. Then to have that happen extends the drive. Anytime you extend the drive like that it’s probably going to lead to bigger points. So Quincy knows, but at the same time those are the plays he’s got to get out of his game if he wants to be the player we think he can be.”

The fact that Williams hit Hurts so late suggests that Saleh is coaching his players to treat running quarterbacks like running backs. That’s something more teams will be doing — and it’s something the officials supposedly will be calling appropriately this year. But a player still can’t be blown up when he’s clearly out of bounds regardless of whether he’s a quarterback or a running back, and Hurts was.

For his part, Hurt had no complaints. “It happens,” he told reporters. “He hit me late. They called a flag. We moved on.”

He was happy, however, that so many came to his defense.

“I think that’s what we’re about,” Hurts said. “In the end, I think that’s us having each other’s backs. That’s Philly.”

The good news for Philly is that Hurts emerged from the game healthy. That’s always the top priority for any team playing in the preseason.
