Meteor Sighting Friday Night November 4: Video From Baltimore County And Map Where It Tracked

On Friday November 4, we were greeted to a rare mild November evening while the moon was in conjunction with Jupiter. This provided a great opportunity for many to be outside viewing and spotting a spectacular meteor streak across the sky.  It was reported by many in the Mid Atlantic region and even captured on video in Baltimore County, Maryland.

First The Moon and Jupiter

This is what brought people outside Friday night and I wanted to show you the best photos I could find. Jim Olson was able to use a telescope to capture the moon. Jupiter, and a few of its surrounding moons in one frame.

Also captured was this photo from Brenda Bowman

Dave McHugh and his wife were doing just that by their fire pit when they saw a bright greenish-blue light streak across the sky around 9:15 PM EDT.  He messaged me, which prompted the search. I followed up by messaging my friend Mike Hankey at The American Meteor Society who lives in Baltimore County, Maryland. He has a network of cameras in his ALLSKY network pointing up at night, always recording.

Meteor Seen Over Northern Baltimore County Maryland

This was on AMS ALLKSY7 from Mike Hankey in Monkton MD. See around 9:15 PM EDT.

The result yielded the video below.   Thanks to reports to the American Meteor Society, they were able to triangulate and plot the most likely path.

Total Lunar Eclipse

November 8th – This will reach totality around sunrise. In fact, the eclipse will end for our region at 6:42 AM, the predicted sunrise that day.

This means that the moon will be setting in the West during the eclipse. If the sky is clear, it will provide a wonderful chance for photographers to capture the low angle blood red moon with great framing of buildings or landscape. I really hope it is clear and we get amazing pics to share.

Nasa rover sighting reignites fears about human space debris | Mars

Nasa’s Perseverance rover typically beams back evocative images of bleak dusty landscapes, red-hued sandstorms and Martian rock samples. So its operators were surprised to receive an image on Monday of a shiny silver object resembling a discarded crisp packet wedged between two rocks.

The object, the Nasa team concluded, is a piece of debris discarded by the robotic craft during its touchdown in February 2021.

“My team has spotted something unexpected: It’s a piece of a thermal blanket that they think may have come from my descent stage, the rocket-powered jet pack that set me down on landing day back in 2021,” the Perseverance Twitter account reported.

“That shiny bit of foil is part of a thermal blanket – a material used to control temperatures. It’s a surprise finding this here: My descent stage crashed about 2 km away. Did this piece land here after that, or was it blown here by the wind?”

The image has reignited concerns that space exploration risks contaminating the pristine Martian and lunar environments. The Outer Space Treaty of 1967 created an obligation under international law to avoid the harmful contamination of outer space, the moon and other celestial bodies, but some argue that the law is not detailed enough to ensure protection.

However, in the case of the Perseverance litter, Prof Andrew Coates, a space scientist at UCL’s Mullard Space Science Laboratory, said: “The good news is that everything is sterilised before it goes to Mars, and the space radiation environment helps during the nine-month trip to Mars as does the harsh surface environment.”

“As it is so difficult to land on Mars because of the thin atmosphere, landers always have associated landing system hardware which also lands on the surface – parachutes, back shells, and landing systems – like the sky crane for Perseverance and Curiosity, airbags and retro rocket systems for earlier missions,” he added. “These ‘fly off into the sunset’ from the landing site and ultimately crash, but the contamination risk is very low.”

Avoiding contamination is crucial for missions like Perseverance, which is hunting for signs of ancient life in Mars’ Jezero crater. Scientists believe that more than 3.5bn years ago, the area was flooded with water and was home to an ancient river delta. Conceivably, microbial life could have survived in Jezero during this wetter period and so the car-sized rover is collecting soil samples to return to Earth that scientists can assess for signs of ancient life.

Tesla Semi burns rubber and shows off turning circle in new Giga Nevada sighting

Back in November, PepsiCo CEO Ramon Laguarta remarked that his company was expecting its first Tesla Semi deliveries in the fourth quarter. This was a surprise to electric vehicle enthusiasts, as Tesla CEO Elon Musk noted during the 2021 Annual Shareholder Meeting that the Class 8 all-electric hauler would be hitting volume production in 2023. Yet if recent sightings at the Giga Nevada area are any indication, it appears that the Semi is now in limited production — and Tesla is doing some interesting tests with its freshly made trucks.

The Semi’s new video, which was shared on YouTube by Tesla advocate Sawyer Merritt, was shot last Friday near Gigafactory Nevada. The truck in the footage was reportedly manufactured in a production facility that has been constructed near Tesla’s massive battery plant. While the Semi in the footage looked quite similar to the white painted, updated prototypes that have been spotted several times this year, the new truck reportedly did not have any stickers from the Department of Transportation, nor did it have manufacturer plates.

Sightings of the Tesla Semi have been going on for some time, but what makes last Friday’s footage quite special was that it showcased a clear tire-shredding acceleration run from the Class 8 all-electric truck. The footage was brief, lasting only two and a half minutes, but it was enough to show just how quick the Semi really is when it accelerates at full speed. Granted, the Semi was not pulling a trailer when it was captured on video, but it’s still remarkable to see such a large all-electric vehicle run like a sports car on the road.

Also quite interesting was the Semi’s incredibly tight turning radius. After running the length of the production facility near Giga Nevada, the Semi simply took a U-turn to head back. The vehicle then proceeded to showcase its turning circle several more times, and just like its acceleration, the Semi’s turning radius is pretty remarkable. This bodes well for the Semi’s maneuverability, which would likely help it stand apart from its more conventional, more traditional competitors.

If recent reports are accurate and the Tesla Semi has indeed entered limited production, it would suggest that the company might be working with some of its first customers as part of its efforts to refine and finalize the Class 8 hauler. Considering CEO Laguarta’s statements last November, PepsiCo could very well be one of these first customers. PepsiCo has been dropping hints about its upcoming Tesla Semi fleet as of late, after all. Earlier this year, the company noted that it was expecting to receive 15 units of the Semi by the end of 2021. PepsiCo has also received a permit for a Tesla Megacharger at its Modesto, California facility.

Watch the Tesla Semi burn some rubber in the video below.

Chinese sighting of ‘cube’ on moon rouses speculation, inspires memes

An image provided by Our Space, a science website affiliated with China National Space Administration, and, according to the website, was captured by Chinese rover Yutu-2 on the far side of the moon, shows a cube-like object in this image provided to Reuters December 8, 2021. BEIJING, Dec 8 (Reuters) – A photograph of a cube-like object captured by a Chinese rover on the far side of the moon has fanned speculation over what it could be and inspired a host of memes by Chinese internet users.

The Yutu-2 caught an image of what seems like a large cubic object on the horizon about 80 metres (87 yards) from its location, said Our Space, a Chinese government science website, citing the rover’s last log on Dec. 3.

Under the hashtag “Yutu’s latest discovery”, a series of internet memes showed the rover rolling over the lunar plain towards a pair of obelisks, a tall monolith, and even a giant hammer and sickle – the symbol of the Communist Party.

“It’s space junk left behind by the U.S.,” one Chinese internet user wrote in a social media post.

“Get a bit closer, and you’d see it’s a nucleic acid test site for COVID-19,” another quipped.

“It’s the home of aliens!” a third said in mock horror.

Others suggested a more mundane possibility – it’s just a boulder.

The solar-powered Yutu, or “Jade Rabbit” in Chinese, will cover the distance of 80 metres in two to three lunar days, according to Our Space, or two to three Earth months.

The robotic rover has been operating in the Von Karman Crater in the South Pole-Aitken Basin since its deployment in January 2019.

The mission was a historic first, with no other nation having landed on the far side of the moon until then.

With the moon tidally locked to Earth – rotating at the same speed as it orbits our planet – most of its “dark side” is never visible to those on Earth.

Bear Sighting Inside Porter Ranch Ralphs Grocery Store – NBC Los Angeles

Imagine walking into your neighborhood Ralphs to do your daily grocery shopping and encountering a furry friend in the honey aisle.

Residents of Porter Ranch got a surprise Saturday morning, when they saw a 125 lbs. male bear walking through the aisles of a Ralphs.

The bear was spotted inside the store around 6:30 a.m. – 7 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department – Devonshire Station.

LAPD said there were reports of maybe three bear sightings in the area, but only one was seen inside the Ralphs.

The bear was chased outside toward the back of a nearby Walmart building, where officers waited for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Once they arrived, the bear was shot with a tranquilizer. He was then tagged and taken to a suitable habitat, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service PIO, Tim Badley.

No injuries were reported.
