Brackenridge Police Chief Justin McIntire killed, another officer injured in shootout with suspect

BRACKENRIDGE, Pa. (KDKA) — One police officer is dead and another is injured after a shooting in Brackenridge, authorities said Monday.

LIVE UPDATES: Community offers condolences after shooting death of Brackenridge police chief

Police responded to the scene near 6th Avenue and Morgan Street on Monday around 4 p.m. in the Allegheny County borough. Officials say the officer killed in the shootout with the suspect is Brackenridge Police Chief Justin McIntire, who has been chief since 2018. Police said the suspect in the shooting is 28-year-old Aaron Lamont Swan.

According to sources, McIntire died at the scene while the other officer was shot in the leg. Police said that officer is in stable condition at a local hospital. The officer has not been named.

Police confirmed that Swan was killed in a shootout with law enforcement in Pittsburgh’s Homewood neighborhood on Monday night after fleeing Brackenridge in a carjacked vehicle. Swan was shot and killed by police near Brushton Avenue after shooting at police, officials said.

Law enforcement had been looking for Swan since Sunday night after he was wanted for probation violations involving weapons.

State police saw him on Route 28 near Cheswick on Sunday night, but he fled their traffic stop, officials said. On Monday morning, Swan led law enforcement on a chase. Harrison Township police got his car but Swan fled on foot. He was spotted by police around 2 p.m. near the Brackenridge-Tarrentum border and gunfire was exchanged at two locations, where McIntire was killed and the other officer was injured.

Police put out a “be on the lookout” alert for Lamont’s carjacked vehicle, a 2014 silver Subaru Legacy. Police said the people who were carjacked by Swan were not injured.

This was not the first time Swan had allegedly shot at law enforcement. In 2014, he was arrested and later convicted for shooting at a K-9 officer in East Liberty who stopped him for carrying a gun. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years in prison.

In 2017, he was convicted again and sentenced to another three years for armed robbery and inflicting serious bodily injury on another person. Most recently in 2019, he pleaded guilty to drug sales and was sentenced to another year in prison.

McIntire was named chief in 2018 after working his way up through the ranks from patrol officer and sergeant.

Police responded to the scene at 3000 Continental Colony Parkway after reports of people being shot around 5:08 p.m.

According to the police, a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old were pronounced dead at the scene while several other victims were transported to a nearby hospital.

The address appears to be an apartment complex named The Retreat at Greenbriar.

Police said three teens — a 15-year-old female, 15-year-old male, and an 11-year-old boy — were transported to a local hospital.

Police believe some type of argument on social media escalated the incident to gunfire.

“One group of individuals came to the apartment with their guns, then the other group fired their weapons,” Deputy Chief Charles Hampton Jr. said. “Both parties had weapons.”

Amy Anderson died by return fire in shootout with Branden Estorffe, Steven Rubin

The veterinarian who fatally shot two Mississippi police officers in a Motel 6 parking lot was killed by one of the cops who returned fire, authorities revealed Friday, as other new details emerged in the perplexing case.

Amy Brogdon Anderson and Bay St. Louis Police Officer Branden Estorffe discharged simultaneous shots after she first opened fire, killing Sgt. Steven Robin from inside her SUV, Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell told WLOX News.

Both of the latter shots were precise, and all three were found dead in the Bay St. Louis parking lot Wednesday morning. Anderson’s 8-year-old daughter was in the car and witnessed the chaos, but was not injured.

The commissioner divulged several other key details in the case, including why Anderson had been acting so frantically.

“Amy thought that she was being followed and clearly was showing some signs of mental health issues,” Tindell said.

A distressed Anderson had checked into the motel, approximately 650 miles from her Ocean Springs home, at 2:30 a.m. and asked the front desk manager to call 911 an hour later. Robin and Estorffe arrived within five minutes to find Anderson wildly packing her belongings from her room and into her SUV, the commissioner said.

Steven Robin and Branden Estorffe were killed in a motel parking lot Wednesday morning.

Officers spoke with her and her young daughter and were petting the family’s three dogs. Bodycam footage shows that the interactions remained cordial for approximately 30 minutes.

The white truck with plates from another state that Anderson thought was following her just happened to be passing through the parking lot of the motel, according to Tindell. Robin ran a background check on the truck and determined Anderson’s paranoia was unfounded.

The officers became increasingly concerned for the 8-year-old’s safety, so Estorffe walked a short distance from Anderson to call Child Protective Services.

Mississippi Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell said Anderson was killed by Estorffe’s return fire, not by suicide.
AP

“It was about that time that you heard a commotion and when he came around the corner Officer Robin had been shot in the head and rather instantaneously he drew his weapon was able to get two rounds off. She got two rounds off striking Officer Estorffe but he managed to shoot her in the chest,” Tindell said.

“Both of them received fatal wounds in that split second.”

Officials initially suspected that Anderson committed suicide after gunning down Robin at close range and Estorffe from about 20 yards away. Robin and Anderson died at the scene, while Estorffe was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Police are still investigating the incident and trying to piece together what led to Anderson’s distress. The only witness, Tindell pointed out, is a very traumatized 8-year-old girl.

Anderson was shot by return fire.

“I don’t know what she saw,” said Tindell, “but she was there.”

Anderson was working as an emergency veterinarian with a focus on small animals at the 24-hour animal hospital MedVet Mobile, her Facebook page said, which also states she is “single.”

Earlier in the year, Anderson wrote about a Hawaiian vacation she took with her three children.

“The kids and I checked another big item off of our bucket list, and we had the most amazing vacation with some added education in Maui, Hawaii!!” she wrote. “It was without a doubt the most beautiful place we’ve ever been, and we packed as much adventure, fun, hysterical laughs, and memories as we could in 6 days.”

Argentina reaches Qatar 2022 semifinals with penalty shootout win over Netherlands in World Cup thriller

CNN
 —

The hopes of Argentina and Lionel Messi winning the World Cup remain very much alive after a nerve-shredding penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands in a thrilling match at Qatar 2022.

Leading 2-0 with just eight minutes remaining thanks to goals from Nahuel Molina and Messi, the Netherlands staged a stunning comeback as a Wout Weghorst’s brace ensured the game went to extra time.

With neither side able to find the winner in those extra 30 minutes, the match was decided on penalties and Argentina goalkeeper Emi Martinez made himself the hero for La Albiceleste, saving two Dutch spot kicks.

Martinez has made a name for himself as an expert in penalty shootouts, saving three in Argentina’s Copa America semifinal against Colombia last year, and further cemented his place as an Argentine hero in Qatar.

After Enzo Fernandez missed the first penalty that would have given Argentina victory, Lautaro Martinez stepped up and hammered home the winning spot kick to send the thousands of Argentine fans inside the Lusail Stadium into delirium.

Argentina’s players remained out on the pitch long after the shootout was over, taking in the adulation of their adoring fans who will no doubt be celebrating long into the night in Qatar.

It was another remarkable ending to a match at this World Cup, which has seen all manner of shocks and comebacks, though this one perhaps exceeded them all.

Spanish referee Mateu Lahoz, known for his eccentricity and enjoyment of the limelight, certainly added to the drama, dishing out an numerous yellow cards, including one in the shootout, as he struggled to keep control of the game.

There were no less than three mass brawls throughout the 120 minutes and penalties, the first one sparked by Leandro Paredes smashing a ball straight into the Netherlands dugout at the side of the pitch.

It became difficult to keep a track of which players were being disciplined by Lahoz but according to FIFA, 18 yellow cards (two for Dumfries) and one red card were brandished during the quarterfinal.

This match will undoubtedly go down as an all-time World Cup classic, but Argentina will quickly need to bring itself down back to earth ahead of the semifinal against knockout specialist Croatia.

Millions of Argentines have dreamed of the day Messi emulates the late Diego Maradona and lifts the World Cup. That day is now one step closer.

The 35-year-old Messi has done everything within his powers to ensure Argentina had the best chance possible to win a first World Cup title since 1986.

There have been fleeting moments of the Messi magic football fans have grown accustomed to seeing over the years, most notably his wonderful touch and finish against Mexico in the group stages that gave Argentina a crucial breakthrough after the shock defeat by Saudi Arabia.

Few fans would have placed Argentina among the favorites ahead of the tournament, but with Messi in the team’s ranks anything is possible, at any time.

Under head coach Lionel Scaloni, a former Argentine international, the team is in a better place than it has been for some quite some time and in 2021 won the Copa America, the national team’s first major trophy since 1993 and Messi’s first in the famous blue and white shirt.

However, Argentina was yet to put together a convincing 90 minutes in Qatar and defensive frailties that has hindered it in recent years undoubtedly remain.

The Dutch, meanwhile, failed to impress in the group stages but were greatly improved in the 3-1 round of 16 win over the the United States Men’s National Team and Memphis Depay’s opener in that game, a patient, probing team move, is without question one of the best goals of the tournament so far.

This was the sixth World Cup meeting between these two teams and this fixture has provided plenty of history over the years. From a Mario Kempes-inspired victory in the 1978 final to Dennis Bergkamp’s stunning goal in the 1998 quarterfinals, this rivalry was ready for another player to write their name in soccer folklore.

The opening 35 minutes were predictably cagey, with neither side willing to take much of a risk while in possession.

But, unsurprisingly, it was Messi that unlocked a stubborn Dutch defense with a ludicrous, almost impossible, moment of genius.

Running towards the left-hand side of the penalty area, the Argentina captain played an absurd reverse pass perfectly into the path of Molina, who took one touch and poked the ball past Andries Noppert.

Replays showed Messi didn’t once look up to see Molina’s run; how he saw the pass, let alone played it, only he will know. Just when you think you’ve seen it all in his 18-year career, Messi still finds a way to leave mouths agape.

When Messi stepped up to make it 2-0 from the penalty spot after 75 minutes, it looked like game over. However, if there’s one thing the World Cup in Qatar has shown, it’s that these matches are never over until the referee blows for full time.

Having offered so little for more than 80 minutes, the Netherlands opted to hammer long ball after long ball towards the Argentina penalty area, aiming for the 6 feet 6 inch substitute Weghorst and Virgil Van Dijk.

It paid off spectacularly, as Weghorst headed home brilliantly from Steven Berghuis’ delivery with just under eight minutes left to play.

That goal set up a grandstand finish, which included the first of three mass brawls.

With almost the very last action of the game, the Netherlands were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area.

It looked as though either Cody Gakpo or Teun Koopmeiners were going to take a shot at goal, but the latter played an ingenious pass into Weghorst, who turned his defender and slotted the ball past Martinez.

That goal sparked wild scenes as the entire Netherlands bench emptied to celebrate by the corner flag, silencing the thousands of Argentina fans that had been so boisterous throughout the game.

It was an almost inconceivable turn of events with Weghorst, who struggled to make an impact at Burnley and is currently loaned out to Besiktas, temporarily putting a halt to Messi’s seemingly inevitable march towards a World Cup title.

However, Messi and Argentina were not to be denied and held their cool from the spot to bring to a close an incredible evening of football.

There were further sour scenes that followed, though, as some of the Argentina team celebrated in the faces of the distraught Dutch players once Martinez had scored the winning penalty, caused tempers to flare once again.

Messi is now tantalizingly close to lifting his first World Cup and it will take something special to stop an incredible player who seems hellbent on lifting the trophy he craves the most.

Argentina withstands late Netherlands rally, wins penalty shootout in wild World Cup quarterfinal

Lionel Messi of Argentina celebrates after Lautaro Martinez scored the winning penalty against Netherlands on Friday in Qatar. (Photo by James Williamson – AMA/Getty Images)

LUSAIL, Qatar — Lionel Messi and Argentina survived one of the wildest games of the 2022 World Cup in a penalty shootout. Emi Martinez sprung to his right, then to his left, for majestic saves. Messi converted to give Argentina the shootout lead, and from there, unlike in regulation, the Argentines never looked back.

They blew a 2-0 advantage in the final 20 minutes of regulation. The Netherlands conjured a master set piece goal in the 11th minute of second-half stoppage time to send the game to extra time, and eventually penalties.

From the spot, Argentina began with perfection. It led 2-0 and 3-1. It threatened to blow yet another lead when Enzo Fernandez pulled his attempt wide. But Lautaro Martinez converted in the clutch. Emi Martinez, the heroic goalkeeper, fell to the ground in relief. Messi was lifted into the air by teammates.

But before the penalty shootout, for over an hour, the story of Friday’s game was a Messi pass. It was his 34th-minute ascent to another planet. He glanced up and saw six orange jerseys impeding him. So he toggled to a bird’s-eye view. He peered down from on high and picked out an extraterrestrial ball, through four Dutchmen and onto the foot of a teammate, for a 1-0 lead.

He later converted a 73rd-minute penalty. He darted toward his adoring fans and spread his arms as his teammates spilled onto the field. He, and they, were up 2-0 and cruising into the semis.

But then disaster struck. The Dutch threw on Weghorst, and began pumping long balls into his feet and chest and onto his head. It became clear rather quickly that Argentina couldn’t cope.

Weghorst scored the first with a trademark header. Argentina, suddenly, was barely hanging on.

The game became an utter mess, replete with yellow cards and ruckuses. Much of the madness was by Argentina’s design. And until the final minute of stoppage time, it was helping.

The stroke of Dutch genius that nearly ended Messi’s World Cup career started at a standstill. It was the 101st minute of an increasingly frantic quarterfinal here at the Lusail Stadium, shortly after a controversial foul. Argentina had a 2-1 lead and one foot in the semis, but the Netherlands had a dangerous free kick that they absolutely had to score. And they did, just like Argentina had earlier, with a pass that not a soul saw coming.

The undoing began with an overzealous barge by Germán Pezzella into the back of Weghorst. It was Holland’s second free kick in such a position, just wide of center, 25 yards out. The Dutch had smashed the first into the wall. All of Argentina readied for a similar attempt. And Teun Koopmeiners seemed to step to the ball to do exactly that.

But instead, he slotted a brilliant pass to Weghorst, and executed a play that the Dutch had cooked up on the training ground.

It was eerily similar to a play that Argentina had used against England to earn a 2-2 tie (and eventually win on penalties) at the 1998 World Cup.

It was also remarkably similar to one that Weghorst had finished off for his then-club team, Wolfsburg, two years ago.

It was a preconceived answer to Messi’s genius, the collective brilliance to match his individual brilliance. Only the Netherlands couldn’t carry that same energy into extra time and after both teams went scoreless in the added 30 minutes it was time for Emi Martinez to do his thing.

La Albiceleste will play Croatia on Tuesday. And their fans are overjoyed by that. Around 8:40 p.m. here, with 80 minutes until kickoff, many gathered around phones and media-tribune monitors to watch their archrivals, Brazil, duel Croatia from the penalty spot. When Marquinhos struck the post and Brazil lost, the blue-and-white-clad acolytes erupted. Hundreds, perhaps thousands who’d already gathered behind one goal soon broke into song. The path was clear.

Outside the Lusail Stadium, TV reporters went live to Argentina in shock: “Brasil está fuera de Copa del Mundo.” Brazil is out of the World Cup.

They’ll conclude the night by saying: Argentina is very much alive and two steps from Messi’s elusive glory.

Major League Soccer Cup: Gareth Bale scores dramatic goal as Los Angeles Football Club triumphs in thrilling penalty shootout

CNN
 —

Gareth Bale’s dramatic, late goal helped Los Angeles Football Club win the Major League Soccer Cup for the first time in a thrilling, frantic final against Philadelphia Union at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles.

Jack Elliott looked to have won the game for Philadelphia when he scored in stoppage time of extra time, but substitute Bale’s header minutes later tied the game at 3-3 and forced a penalty shootout, which LAFC won 3-0.

“It’s always nice to score in finals, and I seem to have a knack for doing that,” Bale, who joined LAFC from Real Madrid earlier this year, told reporters after the game. “It’s big. It’s important for the club. It’s important for the fans.”

With Real Madrid, Bale scored three times in Champions League finals – including a stunning bicycle kick against Liverpool in 2018.

“The reason why I came here was to try and help the club win the MLS Cup,” the Wales international added.

“You can see how happy everybody is now – the fans, the city. It’s important for this club to go to the next level, and I think by winning this trophy, it shows that we are.”

LAFC opened the scoring in Saturday’s final through Kellyn Acosta’s deflected free-kick in the 28th minute.

Trailing 1-0 at the start of the second half, Dániel Gazdag of the Union scored the equalizer when he picked up José Martínez’s scuffed shot inside the box.

The game remained knotted up until the 83rd minute when Jesús Murillo’s goal gave Los Angeles the lead again. However, that lead wouldn’t last too long as Union’s Jack Elliott scored a header to force extra time.

In the 110th minute, LAFC goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau was shown a yellow card after a nasty foul on Philadelphia’s Cory Burke.

Both players were hurt by the foul and the card was changed to a red as Crépeau was carted off the field with an injury. Burke stayed in the game, while LAFC backup goalkeeper John McCarthy was brought on to finish the match.

Union’s Elliott stepped up again in stoppage time, scoring to give his side the lead with around five minutes left.

But just as the Union thought it had the championship secured, Bale produced the equalizer late in the final moments of stoppage time to force a penalty shootout.

McCarthy, who hails from Philadelphia, was the hero for Los Angeles as he saved two penalties in the shootout, while LAFC scored with three of its four attempts, including Ilie Sánchez’s championship-securing goal.

That sent the home crowd went crazy as players and coaches ran onto the field to celebrate the victory.

McCarthy was named the 2022 MLS Cup Most Valuable Player after the match.

NFL Week 6 picks against the spread: Dolphins topple Vikings, Chiefs take down Bills, shootout in Seattle

These two primetime games are a reward for our penance on Thursday night. Two elite divisional matchups on Sunday and Monday plus a bunch of eyebrow-raising chaos bombs lingering in the early window.

The two non Chiefs-Bills games in the late window are extremely “meh” at first glance. But a crazy NFC West shootout and Carolina playing spoiler could really turn the afternoon window into a full day of calamity.

Last week felt like a C+ or B- drama week for the NFL. This one has the makings of some very bizarre twists and turns.

New York Giants
+5.5

The Giants are the most fun question in football right now — is this start legit or will they regress? Brian Daboll is universally beloved regardless, both by Giants fans and football fans in general. He’s so dang blue collar. The only concern is New York’s coming back from London off a massive win against a very dangerous offense. The Giants will muddle things up because they can’t win with lockdown defense, but it’s asking a LOT of this team to slow down Lamar Jackson. I think we see a ton of points here, assuming the forecast remains benign, especially with Marcus Williams now on IR for Baltimore. I’m picking the Ravens but if I were betting them I’d take the first half line instead with New York battling potential jet lag.

New Orleans Saints

The Andy Dalton Revenge Game!! Cincy is 31st in yards per play in the NFL this year, which would be shocking except the bigger stunner is the Rams ranking 32nd. Quite the precipitous fall for the reigning conference champs. These teams feel like traditional scorers, but both defenses are substantially better than the current iteration of the offenses. This game is an LSU FEST. Betting against Joe Burrow in Louisiana does not feel smart and I bet we see a sneaky amount of Burrow jerseys in the stands from Saints fans who appreciate what he did at LSU. I have the Saints but barely.

The Pick: Saints 17, Bengals 14

Indianapolis Colts
-2

Insane stat: the Colts are the first team since the 1995 Chargers to not allow a single point in the fourth quarter of any game through five weeks of the season. More insane stat: if the Jaguars don’t score in the fourth quarter Sunday, the Colts will be the first team since the 1934 Bears and 1934 Lions to not allow a fourth-quarter point through six games of the season. Now, granted, this isn’t entirely the Colts being elite on defense — Jacksonville shut/blew them out a few weeks back and no one scored late. The Broncos stepped on their own foot last Thursday. Etc, etc., but still a crazy stat. The Jaguars are, somehow, the more desperate team here. The under is so low it’s hard to play, but it’s hard to see where the points come from here.

The Pick: Jaguars 14, Colts 9

Miami Dolphins
+3

Any discussion of this game is largely irrelevant without knowing the precise nature of the Miami quarterback situation. Skylar Thompson, the late-round rookie, has been announced by Mike McDaniel as the starter. I think Teddy Bridgewater plays (he never suffered a concussion, per the Dolphins, but the altered protocols forced him to remain out of the game and miss practice). I’m willing to bet on the +3.5 that he ends up playing and I think we see a ton of points in this game too.

Bill Belichick Revenge Game!!! The Patriots were written off several weeks ago and the BB eulogies were being crafted. Then they stuffed the Lions in a sack last week. It still didn’t get the radar up. What did put my antenna in the air was Tom Curran — the funniest-in-writing (decently funny in person too, I guess) reporter of any major NFL beat — of NBC Sports Boston giving some praise to Matt Patricia’s offense.

We all had a good chuckle but the numbers are on par with last year and the Pats have a very winnable schedule coming up. Ignoring the quality of competition from the current season’s teams, let’s acknowledge Bill Belichick is about to play the Jets twice, the Browns once and the Colts once in a six-game stretch. Bill might as well be Steve Buscemi writing names right before he gets that call from Billy Madison. The sixth opponent is the Bears. Even with Bailey Zappe (!), the Pats might be about to get hot.

The Pick: Patriots 18, Browns 13

Green Bay Packers

Aaron Rodgers is a complex individual, but he’s also got some very simple, very respectable and very dangerous tendencies when he’s questioned. Rodgers has Michael Jordan level spite levers working inside his head. There’s nothing more complimentary than the way Tom Brady approaches Rodgers — he’s treated as a contemporary despite being seven years younger. And Brady still stays aloof, because he knows Rodgers is a threat. Anywho, the Packers lost and Rodgers is probably going to carve up the Jets in this LaFleur vs. LaFleur matchup.

Atlanta Falcons
+5

If we’re going to ding a franchise for a perceived bad roster, we need to give credit to a coaching staff for maxing out that roster. The Falcons have played five games and have been in five one-score games. Arthur Smith is doing a really good job with the current Falcons roster and deserves credit for navigating the Matt Ryan/Marcus Mariota swap meet move. He had nothing to do with it and still has the offense giving people problems. If anyone gives these guys flak for using “smoke and mirrors” quickly remind them that’s coaching. I’m going Niners here but if the final injuries are bad for San Francisco I wouldn’t want to be on their side.

Pittsburgh Steelers
+9

Tom Brady is 9-3 all time against the Steelers with a 20-5 touchdown-interception ratio. Does that really carry over into Sunday’s game? Maybe not, especially with him on a different team and a lack of Bill Belichick to help gameplan. But Brady has a wealth of experience inside ACRISURE FIELD and that will make life easier for the Bucs QB. A whole host of injuries on both sides of the ball for Tampa Bay could make this a closer game than it should be, but I trust Brady to lock in and Todd Bowles to cook up enough defensive pressures to keep Kenny Pickett scrambling. The Steelers have never won a game without T.J. Watt since they drafted him in the first round. He’s that important.

The Pick: Buccaneers 24, Steelers 17

Honestly the pick here comes down to one thing for me: Patrick Mahomes is an underdog at home for the first time ever as a starter. I am going to take those points, even if the Bills have the best roster in football and are looking to try and shrink the perceived power gap in the AFC. Thirteen seconds still lingers for this Buffalo team, even if no one will talk to you about it.

The Pick: Chiefs 31, Bills 28
Bets: Chiefs +2.5

Seattle Seahawks
+2.5

Why are the Cardinals favored here? Geno Smith isn’t just playing better than Russell Wilson, he’s playing better than Kyler Murray too. The Seahawks can’t play a lick of defense right now, and I absolutely love the over in this spot. Everyone is going to be focused on Buffalo/Kansas City, but this is a sneaky fun game and it could result in an explosion of points. Over the last three weeks, the Seahawks and their opponents combined to score 224 total points, just an outrageous amount of scoring. Weather’s looking gorgeous and neither of these pass defenses can stop anyone.

The Pick: Seahawks 31, Cardinals 28
Bets: Seahawks +2.5, Over 50.5

Los Angeles Rams
-10

This is the stinky survivor game du jour. Everyone is out on the Rams with their lackadaisical offensive performance the last few weeks and offensive line issues. It would be hardly unsurprising if Matthew Stafford was battling some fairly serious injuries. The Rams were an easy pick if David Tepper allowed Matt Rhule to remain employed another week. But this becomes a Spidey Sense game because of the unknown with Steve Wilkes and P.J. Walker. Personally I think the Panthers are going to get steamrolled but the dead cat bounce for teams who fired their coach — particularly early in the season and against the spread — is a real thing. If Wilkes and Brian Burns decided to spend the next few months trying to get real paid it wouldn’t be surprising.

The Pick: Rams 21, Panthers 11
Bets: Pass

Philadelphia Eagles
-6.5

It’s so wild this game is for the NFC East lead considering the lack of Dak Prescott for the Cowboys since his Week 1 injury. The Dallas defense is carrying this team and, as I will continue to repeat every week in this space for the rest of the year, someone needs to hire Dan Quinn this coming offseason. The Eagles are deep enough on the offensive line to thwart the Cowboys pass rush and I’m not sure the Cooper Rush Cinderella story can last through what might be one of the wildest Philly sports weekends in a long time. This crowd is going to be rabid, and the Eagles can snuff out questionable traits from opposing teams.

The Pick: Eagles 31, Cowboys 14
Bets: Eagles -6

Broncos at Chargers

Latest Odds:

Los Angeles Chargers
-4.5

Russell Wilson’s first year in Denver isn’t going as well offensively as, um, anyone would expect. The Broncos and Chargers are fairly snug in overall DVOA but the Broncos are buoyed by their top-five defense. Wilson and Nathaniel Hackett’s monstrosity ranks 27th by offensive DVOA. The Chargers look balanced and might have survived their initial wave of injuries to stabilize their standing in the AFC. This is a massive game for playoff positioning; it’s unfortunate the Chargers will be playing in an away environment. I’ll still back them, but it’s largely because the Broncos just don’t look very good.

The Pick: Chargers 24, Broncos 17
Bets: Chargers -4.5
