Angels owner Arte Moreno exploring potential sale: What it would mean for the Halos and Shohei Ohtani

Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno announced Tuesday he has begun a formal process to “evaluate strategic alternatives including a possible sale of the team.” Moreno purchased the Angels from Disney for $180 million in May 2003, a few months after the franchise won its only World Series championship.

Here is Moreno’s statement on a potential sale:

“It has been a great honor and privilege to own the Angels for 20 seasons. As an Organization, we have worked to provide our fans an affordable and family-friendly ballpark experience while fielding competitive lineups which included some of the game’s all-time greatest players.”

“Although this difficult decision was entirely our choice and deserved a great deal of thoughtful consideration, my family and I have ultimately come to the conclusion that now is the time. Throughout this process, we will continue to run the franchise in the best interest of our fans, employees, players, and business partners.”

This news comes three months after the Anaheim City Council voided a $320 million deal to sell the 153-acre Angel Stadium property to Moreno, who would have then developed the real estate. The deal was negotiated illegally and the City Council paid a $96 million fine following a FBI corruption probe into former mayor Harry Sidhu. Sidhu resigned shortly thereafter.

Moreno, 76, is MLB’s only non-white principal owner. He will leave behind a complicated legacy, one in which he consistently spent money on the big-league team but too often meddled in the day-to-day operations, and reportedly went over the front office’s head to broker several large free-agent contracts. The Angels were among the first teams to furlough employees during the pandemic shutdown in 2020, and Moreno pushed to cancel that year’s amateur draft as a cost-cutting move.

The Angels have not been to the postseason since 2014 and they have not won a postseason game since 2009. With the caveat that a lot can change between now and a sale, the next Angels owner will inherit a team with several pricey long-term contracts. Also, the Angels are currently being sued by the family of former pitcher Tyler Skaggs following his drug-related death in 2019.

Here are three things to know about the fallout stemming from the news Moreno is exploring a sale of the Angels.

Ohtani’s future is even cloudier

When a team is put up for sale, it creates a whole lot of uncertainty. Will the new owner come in and pump money into the roster in an effort to contend like Steve Cohen with the Mets? Or will he authorize a tear down and a rebuild? The argument can be made the Angels need a rebuild. Then again, new owners typically like to come in and make a splash.

Shohei Ohtani, the reigning AL MVP, is scheduled to become a free agent after next season. He has indicated his top priority is winning, and the Angels are not doing that. Can a new owner come in and convince Ohtani to sign long-term? Sure. Could a new owner come in and realize trading Ohtani, while painful, is the best path forward? Also sure.

It should be noted an Ohtani trade would be extremely unpopular with the Angels fanbase, in which case prospective owners may want Moreno’s regime to make that trade, allowing them to can come in and be the good guys. The Nationals, who are also for sale, essentially followed that blueprint with Juan Soto. The current owner ripped off the band-aid. The new owner gets a clean slate.

A new owner would also create uncertainty about Mike Trout’s future. Now 31, Trout is signed through 2030 at huge dollars, and injuries have become more frequent in recent years. Trout has full no-trade protection and controls his own destiny. The question is whether a new owner would keep Trout and build around him, or try to sell him on the idea of a fresh start elsewhere.

Two MLB teams will be up for sale

As noted, the Nationals are up for sale as well. A legal battle among the Angelos family has led to speculation the Orioles could be sold too. The Nationals most definitely are for sale, however, complicating things for both Washington and the Angels. Neither is the only team up for sale now, meaning they’ll compete for the same potential owners.

Cohen purchased the Mets for roughly $2.4 billion in Nov. 2020. The Royals were sold to John Sherman for $1 billion in 2019, and the Marlins were sold to Bruce Sherman for $1.2 billion in 2017. As a large -market team in Southern California, the Angels figure to fetch a price much closer to what the Mets sold for rather than the Royals and Marlins.

A new ballpark could be on the way

Moreno has been trying to secure a new ballpark for several years and the new owner will presumably pick up the torch. Angel Stadium is the fourth oldest ballpark in the big leagues behind Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, and Dodger Stadium, and the team’s lease runs through 2029. So, a new ballpark is not a pressing matter the way it is for, say, the Athletics, but it is certain to be a top priority for the next owner.

An Angels sale could increase chances of Shohei Ohtani trade; these five teams are best positioned to land him

The Los Angeles Angels announced Tuesday that owner Arte Moreno has initiated a formal process to evaluate “strategic alternatives” involving the franchise, including a potential sale. Moreno, who has owned the Angels since buying the franchise from Disney in 2003 at the cost of $184 million, said the following as part of his statement:

“Although this difficult decision was entirely our choice and deserved a great deal of thoughtful consideration, my family and I have ultimately come to the conclusion that now is the time. Throughout this process, we will continue to run the franchise in the best interest of our fans, employees, players, and business partners.”

If Moreno’s process does result in a sale, that development will have major repercussions throughout the league, in no small part because it could clear the way for a Shohei Ohtani trade. As CBS Sports reported last month, rival front offices believe that the biggest hurdle to an Ohtani trade would be getting Moreno to sign off on it; if he’s out of the picture, the odds of an offseason deal would increase.

It’s fair to wonder why an incoming owner would be OK trading one of the best players in baseball, but the situation is comparable to what the Washington Nationals faced this past deadline with Juan Soto. Ohtani, 28, is a year away from free agency, at which point he’s certain to demand a massive contract. The new owner will already have several large obligations on the books, including those given to Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon, and will likely have to leverage themselves financially in order to complete the purchase. As a result, they may shy away from another big contract — especially if they take a realistic view of where the Angels stand, competitively.

The last point is crucial because Ohtani — a two-way sensation and the reigning AL MVP — has a say in where he’ll play after next season. He’s publicly stated that his top priority is to win games, making it possible — if not downright probable — that the Angels are far down on his list of preferred suitors.

Let’s say that the next Angels owner accepts that reality, and that Ohtani is placed on the block this offseason. Just which teams are best positioned to land him in a trade? Here are five that jump to mind, presented below in perceived order of likelihood.

The Dodgers have been enamored with Ohtani dating back to when they tried to sign him out of high school. He chose to play professionally in Japan instead, but it’s unlikely the Dodgers harbor any ill will about his decision. Top executive Andrew Friedman is no stranger to making blockbuster trades, and his best-in-show player development apparatus has once again armed him with a warchest of top youngsters to offer to the Angels. The Dodgers could dangle some combination of catcher Diego Cartaya; righties Bobby Miller, Ryan Pepiot, and Gavin Stone; and infielders Miguel Vargas and Michael Busch. The one potential snag in a Dodgers pursuit is if the Angels elect against moving Ohtani to their biggest geographical rival.

The Mets have a lot of things working in their favor. Owner Steven Cohen has demonstrated time and again that he’s willing to spend big on top talent; general manager Billy Eppler is the same executive who signed Ohtani in the first place; and the Mets have several notable youngsters they could float the Angels’ way. That group includes rookie third baseman Brett Baty and catcher Francisco Álvarez, who is one of the best prospects in the game. The Mets could even include one of their first-round picks from this past summer, be it catcher Kevin Parada or shortstop Jett Williams. Unlike in the Juan Soto talks, there’s no intradivisional weirdness to get in the way.

Speaking of those Soto talks, it only makes sense to include one of the other finalists. The Cardinals still have two of the top position prospects in the minors, in third baseman/outfielder Jordan Walker and shortstop Masyn Winn, and they have a slew of youngsters who could serve as secondary pieces, including pitchers Cooper Hjerpe, Gordon Graceffo, Matthew Liberatore, and Tink Hence. The Cardinals have shown a willingness to pony up in the past, and if Ohtani is serious about prioritizing winning above all, he could do worse than settling down in St. Louis for the long haul.

The Yankees are tough to get a read on in these situations. They would make sense as a landing spot for Ohtani (then again, so do most teams), but the question is, are they willing to part with the prospects it would require to get a deal done? Although the Yankees did thin their farm-system depth by trading for Frankie Montas (and others) at the deadline, they were able to retain shortstop prospects Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza. Outfielder Jasson Dominguez remains in the system, too, and rumors had New York being amenable to shipping him out in the right trade. Another factor worth considering is how the Aaron Judge talks could impact the Yankees’ long-term financial plans, and their willingness to hand out another massive deal next winter.

There are several other teams who could pop up in Ohtani-related rumors this winter. We’re going to cap our skim of the market with a wild-card team: the Rangers. If owner Ray Davis and general manager Chris Young want to put the Jon Daniels era behind them, they could execute another splash move by adding Ohtani. The Rangers certainly have the prospect means to get a deal done, as they have several notable youngsters in their farm system, such as third baseman Josh Jung; righties Jack Leiter, Owen White, Kumar Rocker, and Brock Porter; and outfielder Evan Carter. It’s possible that the Rangers being in the same division would lower their chances of completing a trade; it’s also possible that Young wants to build from within, and that Davis would prefer to not hand out another big contract, having received mixed results from Corey Seager and Marcus Semien. Still, if the Rangers are serious about making the proverbial leap, then Ohtani should be one of their top targets this winter.

Los Angeles Angels’ Shohei Ohtani joins Babe Ruth as only players in MLB history to have at least 10 HRs and 10 wins in same season

OAKLAND, Calif. — Another home run, another pitching win, another spot in the history books. Just another night for Shohei Ohtani.

The two-way sensation from Japan withstood another injury scare and pitched six scoreless innings to go with his team-leading 25th home run, reaching yet another monumental milestone as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Oakland Athletics 5-1 on Tuesday.

Ohtani joined Babe Ruth (1918) as the only players in major league history to have at least 10 home runs and 10 wins in the same season. According to the Angels, two players from the Negro Leagues also did it: Bullet Rogan of the 1922 Kansas City Monarchs and Ed Rile of the 1927 Detroit Stars.

“I feel like every time we’re out there he does something special,” Angels interim manager Phil Nevin said. “You try not to take for granted what we’re seeing every night but it’s pretty awesome to be a part of. These things don’t go by us lightly.”

Ohtani singled and scored on Taylor Ward’s three-run homer in the fifth, then connected for a towering drive off Sam Selman leading off the seventh as a throng of red-clan fans sitting behind the Angels dugout roared.

That moved Ohtani past Ichiro Suzuki for the second-most home runs (118) by a Japanese-born player. Hideki Matsui had 175.

“Obviously we’re very different types of hitters, but if I get to pass Ichiro I’m really honored,” Ohtani said through an interpreter.

On the mound, Ohtani (10-7) was mostly crisp. He had five strikeouts, allowed four hits and retired seven of his final eight batters. He has now recorded 25 home runs and 100 pitching strikeouts for the second straight year — a feat no other player has accomplished in a season in MLB history.

“After that home run today, I turned to the umpire and third base coach and was just like, ‘I don’t know how he does it,'” A’s third baseman Vimael Machin said. “Just being an elite player overall who can throw over 100 mph with nasty off speed and hit the ball the way he hits it, I can’t even describe that. I wish I could do that, too. It’s amazing what he does.”

The reigning AL MVP almost didn’t make it out of the third.

Two days after getting spiked on the top of his left foot following a collision with Mariners pitcher Marco Gonzales near the on-deck circle, Ohtani was hit near the same area by an 87 mph line drive from Ramon Laureano.

After making the play for the final out of the inning, Ohtani bent at the waist in obvious discomfort and then limped slowly off the field. He returned to the field a few moments later to test his leg, and stayed in the game.

“It hit my foot pretty square so initially I thought there was a good chance that might be it tonight,” Ohtani said. “Got back in there and it wasn’t as bad as I initially thought.”

Nevin said Ohtani’s foot got increasingly sore as the game progressed. X-rays taken afterward were negative.

“He’s good. He’ll play tomorrow it looks like,” Nevin said. “It hit him right on the instep. Those things, if you sit for a while, a little bit of a chilly night, it tightened up on him a little bit.”

Rosenthal: Why the Yankees traded Jordan Montgomery, plus Shohei Ohtani talks and wild-card pressure

It’s an old baseball adage: You can never have enough pitching. So how is it that the Yankees traded a quality starting pitcher for an injured center fielder at the trade deadline, perplexing many of their fans and even some in the industry?

The answer comes down to this: The Yankees, according to major-league sources, believe Harrison Bader will be more valuable to them than Jordan Montgomery would have been through 2023, especially in the postseason.

The exchange is not without risk. If one or more of the Yankees’ current starters gets injured or struggles, general manager Brian Cashman very well might regret this move, perhaps even before the postseason begins. The Yankees, after lacking home-field advantage in their ALCS losses to the Astros in 2017 and 2019, want to maintain their 1 1/2-game lead over Houston for the best record in the AL.

Bader, recovering from plantar fasciitis in his right foot, is not expected to return before September, eliminating any short-term benefit from the trade. But the Yankees still believe the calculus of the deal is in their favor, in large part because they did not see Montgomery starting a postseason game over Gerrit Cole, Frankie Montas, Nestor Cortes and Luis Severino, who is on the 60-day IL until mid-September with a right lat strain, but already has resumed throwing.

Jameson Taillon is another Yankees starter who might have bumped Montgomery from the postseason rotation, depending upon the matchup. Domingo Germán will replace Montgomery in the rotation. Clarke Schmidt, currently back at Triple A, offers further protection against injury. So, that’s six potential starters for the stretch run, plus Severino once he returns.

Earlier this season, Cole said of Montgomery, “the more he pitches, the better he gets.” Over time, Montgomery has gained confidence in his stuff, becoming less afraid to pitch to contact. The change in mentality led to better results — his 4.9 percent walk rate and 14.9 pitches per inning are both the lowest of his career. Yet from the Yankees’ perspective, he still wasn’t good enough.

The Yankees did not envision using Montgomery out of their bullpen in the playoffs. Even if he somehow had made it into the rotation, he might not have lasted more than the four innings he pitched in his only career postseason start, Game 4 of the 2020 Division Series against the Rays. Montgomery threw only 62 pitches that night and allowed only one run, but the Yankees deployed their bullpen aggressively, as teams often do in October.

Harrison Bader (Gregory Fisher / USA Today Sports)

So then the question becomes: What will Bader offer once he is healthy?

For starters, defense. Center field is the Yankees’ worst defensive position, according to the advanced metrics. Since 2018, Bader leads all center fielders in Statcast’s Outs Above Average. His sprint speed this season is in the 94th percentile. And while he struggled offensively before getting injured, his OPS-plus in both the shortened 2020 season and 2021 was 14 percent above league-average.

In the Yankees’ view, Bader is simply a more useful part than Montgomery might have been. On most nights, he will start in center. But if the matchup calls for say, an outfield of Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge and Andrew Benintendi, with Matt Carpenter at DH, Bader can come off the bench as a defensive replacement or pinch-runner.

The Bader-Montgomery talks grew out of the Yankees telling teams, “If we import another starter, we would have a starter available.” Yet the Yankees kept trying to acquire another starter even after adding Montas, sources said, pursuing deals for the Marlins’ Pablo López, Giants’ Carlos Rodón and Tigers’ Tarik Skubal. So obviously, they were not entirely comfortable with their rotation.

Both Bader and Montgomery are under club control through 2023, and the Yankees will save a bit of money in the exchange. While the difference in remaining salary between the two this season is negligible, Montgomery’s salary will rise from $6 million next season in his final year of arbitration, while Bader’s will remain flat at $5.2 million.

The Yankees, though, did not make this deal to save a few million, or protect themselves against the possible loss of Judge in free agency; if Judge leaves, they will need a lot more than Bader. No, they made the deal for the same reason teams usually make deals. Because they believed it improved their overall team.

No way to get Shohei

Officials from two clubs interested in trading for Shohei Ohtani were left with the impression that to start the discussion they needed to offer six high-end players, and in the end probably more. A few teams threw out names, even though the Angels made it clear that owner Arte Moreno was resistant to moving Ohtani, making a deal all but impossible.

An Angels official said the team never asked for a set number of players, but merely invited clubs to make offers. The Padres proposed some of the same players they sent the Nationals for Juan Soto and Josh Bell, sources said, and a comparable level of talent overall. The Angels believe if Moreno had allowed talks to advance to completion, Ohtani would have warranted an even stronger package.

Soto is under club control for two-plus seasons, Ohtani one-plus.  Ohtani, however, is two players — a top-of-the-rotation starting pitcher and a middle-of-the-order hitter. Combine those, and a team would have obtained the equivalent of 2 2/3 seasons of control, or the same amount the Padres gained with Soto and Bell. Considering the returns dominant starters usually command at the deadline — see, the Reds and Luis Castillo — perhaps the Angels indeed could have exceeded the return for Soto and Bell.

The next chance for the Angels to move Ohtani will come this offseason, and as The Athletic’s Jayson Stark writes, rival clubs doubt they will even do it then.  If a deal were to happen, the Angels likely would want the return to include more major-league-ready players than long-term prospects. The same would have been true if they had gotten serious at the deadline. Moreno, with Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon signed long-term, shows no interest in rebuilding.

The Padres, by the way, were not in position to acquire both Soto and Ohtani; they had some of the same players in both proposals. The more interesting question is whether they would have had enough left for Soto if they had succeeded in landing José Ramírez from the Guardians shortly before Opening Day.

The Padres’ offer to the Guardians included the 39th pick in the draft, a competitive-balance pick, but not as much overlap in other prospects with the Soto-Bell package, sources said. Both deals, then, might have been possible. But Ramírez ended any possibility of a trade that when he agreed to his new, seven-year, $141 million contract just before Opening Day.

Wild cards facing enormous challenge

The motivations of the Padres and Mariners are easily explained. The Padres are seeking to become the first San Diego team to win a championship in a major professional sports league. The Mariners are seeking to end their 20-year postseason drought, the longest in the four major North American professional sports.

Both teams stand virtually no chance of winning a division title, much less securing a first-round bye. Under baseball’s new, expanded postseason format, the only remaining incentive for each is a top wild-card berth. That’s no small thing — the top wild card will play entirely at home in the best-of-three first round. Yet every team that fails to secure a bye will find it exceedingly difficult to win the four rounds necessary to become a World Series champion.

The lowest wild-card qualifier will be entirely on the road against the lowest-ranking division champion. The other two wild cards will face each other, with the survivor advancing to the Division Series against one of the clubs that earned a bye — most likely the Yankees and Astros in the AL, and the Dodgers and Mets or Braves in the NL.

So, consider the plight of the Blue Jays, who are in a similar spot to the Padres and Mariners, likely capable of only securing the top wild card. The Jays, too, should be highly motivated, considering they have not won the World Series since 1993. Yet, they also know they would use their two and possibly best starting pitchers in the first round, leaving them compromised for the Division Series against the Yankees or Astros.

Is it possible the difficulty of such a task discouraged the Jays from going all-in for a top starting pitcher at the deadline? That might be a stretch — the Jays did not exactly stand pat, adding relievers Anthony Bass and Zach Pop at the deadline, infielder/outfielder Whit Merrifield and depth starter Mitch White. But in a world of hyper-rational club behavior, it will be interesting to see if front offices in the coming years perceive the path to a championship to be too difficult without a bye, and adjust at the deadline accordingly.

Explaining the Iglesias trade

One rival official expressed surprise the Angels traded closer Raisel Iglesias to the Braves only eight months after signing him to a four-year, $58 million, free-agent contract. Iglesias rejected the team’s qualifying offer, and the Angels could have received a draft pick after Competitive Balance Round B if he had signed with another club.

That pick, which this year extended between selections 67 and 80, might have represented greater value than the return the Angels received for Iglesias — left-hander Tucker Davidson, whom rival officials described as highly available, and righty reliever Jesse Chavez, who turns 39 on Aug. 21. But for the Angels, circumstances are markedly different than they were last offseason.

The Angels no longer see themselves as a closer away from contention. By trading Iglesias, they cleared $51.5 million. They can use that money to invest in position players, including, perhaps, viable backups for Trout and Rendon, both of whom have spent significant time on the injured list the past two seasons.

Brandon Marsh, who once projected as the Angels’ center fielder of the future, might have been the alternative to Trout, but the Angels sent him to the Phillies for catcher Logan O’Hoppe, whom MLBPipeline.com immediately installed as the team’s No. 1 prospect.

Around the horn

• The Cubs’ best chance of trading catcher Willson Contreras might have been if the Padres had been unsuccessful in their quest to land Soto. The Padres, according to major-league sources, had interest in Contreras; left fielder Ian Happ, whom the Cubs also did not trade; and reliever David Robertson, who went to the Phillies for pitching prospect Ben Brown.

In the end, no team made an offer for Contreras the Cubs found acceptable. The Astros parted with low-ranked prospects for Christian Vázquez. The Mets might have been spooked by last year’s trade of outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong to the Cubs for shortstop Javier Báez. The Guardians and Rays were not willing to meet the Cubs’ price.

• One thing to remember about the return the Nationals received at last year’s deadline for Max Scherzer and Trea Turner, which a number of rival officials regarded as too light: The Nationals were restricted by Scherzer’s no-trade clause, and his initial willingness to go to only one of three teams — the Dodgers, Giants or Padres.

Scherzer’s stance compromised the Nationals’ leverage. He also was only a rental, while Turner was under club control for one additional season. The Nats, who received catcher Keibert Ruiz and right-hander Josiah Gray as part of a four-player package, did much better for Soto and Bell, neither of whom had no-trade protection. Soto also came with two additional years of club control.

• Mitch White gave the Dodgers the same type of versatility and adaptability that fellow right-hander Ross Stripling provided from 2016 to 2020, and now the two are reunited with the Blue Jays.

White, 27, frequently played catch with Stripling, 32, during his first few spring trainings with the Dodgers, and the two would talk about clawing their way into different roles. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said earlier this season that White’s fastball command is much-improved, his slider was real, and that he was showing more confidence in his curveball.

For now, White represents insurance for the Jays at Triple A.

• And finally, perhaps the biggest reason to believe in the White Sox is their remaining schedule, which is the weakest of the three AL Central contenders and one of the weakest in the game.

The caveat: The White Sox face the first-place Twins nine more times, all in September. Six of their last nine games are against the Twins with three against the Padres in between.

The Twins lead the Guardians by one game and the White Sox by two in the most competitive of the division races.

Shohei Ohtani pitches, hits his way into history again

Shohei Ohtani’s dominance has almost become normal, and yet he often finds a new way to make history. Wednesday was another one of those nights as Ohtani put himself in a class of his own again.

The Los Angeles Angels two-way star pitched seven innings in a 5-2 win over the Miami Marlins, allowing two hits without surrendering an earned run. At the plate, he delivered a two-run single in the fifth to give the Angels the lead for good. And on the base paths, he recorded his 10th stolen base.

Since the RBI became an official stat in 1920, Ohtani is the first player to strike out 10 batters, drive in two runs and steal a base in the same game, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

Ohtani is in the middle of an illustrious stretch, even by his standards. He has pitched 28⅔ consecutive innings without allowing an earned run, dating back to the fifth inning of a June 9 start against Boston, and has won five consecutive starts. He also is one of six pitchers since 1913 (including Clayton Kershaw twice) to have a four-start span with no earned runs and 40 strikeouts.

Of course, none of those pitchers hit like Ohtani. Since that June 9 start against the Red Sox, he is batting .305 with a .398 on-base percentage and .634 slugging percentage — making his 1.032 on-base plus slugging nearly triple the measly .364 mark that opponents have managed against him.

From the archives: Shohei Ohtani is the star that baseball never knew it needed

On the mound, Ohtani continued his unblemished record despite a slow start Wednesday. The Marlins scratched out a first-inning run on a throwing error, a double and a sacrifice fly. They added a walk and a single in the second. But then Ohtani retired the next 13 batters, striking out eight of them, while the Angels built a 5-1 lead.

Over the past four weeks, Ohtani has raised his OPS from .765 to .839 and lowered his ERA from 3.99 to 2.44.

While Ohtani’s night was historic, he has recorded other similar performances this year in an encore to his American League MVP season. Last month, he pitched eight scoreless innings one day after clubbing two three-run homers. And on May 5 at Fenway Park, Ohtani pitched seven scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts and also hit a 109 mph line drive off the Green Monster.

Two-way star earns 5th win in as many games after fanning 10, hitting decisive single

4:39 AM UTC

MIAMI — Baseball is a game of statistics, of which there can only be so many for one player to break. Yet Shohei Ohtani continues to make history with every start, especially when he takes the mound.

Fittingly, it was Ohtani who stole the show in Miami on Wednesday, earning his fifth win in as many pitching starts for the first time in his career with a 5-2 victory over the Marlins at loanDepot park. The two-way phenom is the first Halos pitcher to tally five wins in as many starts since Hector Santiago in 2016.

“There can’t be many [records to set] left, right?” acting manager Ray Montgomery said postgame. “I mean, he has most, if not all of them by now. He competes at everything. And he’s relentless. He can’t quench his thirst for what he does. It’s really fun to watch.”

Ohtani, currently in a tight race to start the All-Star Game on July 19, allowed one unearned run over seven innings while racking up 10 strikeouts — retiring 15 in a row at one point — while also driving home the go-ahead run. Though he saw his scoreless-innings streak end at 21 2/3 innings with the first-inning run, Ohtani has not allowed an earned run in 28 2/3 frames.

“It’s special, it’s historic, it’s elite,” catcher Max Stassi said. “He’s a frontline guy. He’s established himself as one of the better arms in baseball — everybody else knows that — and you’ve got to fear him at the plate the same day, too. He’s a superstar pitcher and he’s a superstar hitter.”

Ohtani went 1-for-4 with two RBIs, one walk and a run scored on Wednesday. With the bases loaded in the fifth, Ohtani threaded a two-run single through the left side to end an 0-for-7 streak and give the Angels a 3-1 lead, providing himself with an insurance run.

That go-ahead RBI ultimately ended Los Angeles’ four-game losing streak, ironic given that it was an Ohtani start that ended the Angels’ 14-game losing streak at the beginning of June. That start (June 9) was also the first win of Ohtani’s current five-win streak, and was the last time he homered during a pitching start.

Ohtani also stole second base as part of a double-steal with Jonathan Villar in the seventh, making Ohtani the fourth Angel with multiple seasons of 15 home runs and 10 stolen bases prior to the All-Star break.

Here are three notable stats from Ohtani’s outing:

• Ohtani is the first player since RBI became official in 1920 to record 10 strikeouts as a pitcher, two RBIs as a batter and a stolen base all in a single game.

• Ohtani’s 111 strikeouts over 81 innings pitched make him the first Angels pitcher to record 110 K’s in the first half in fewer than 100 innings. He’s the first to 110 K’s in the first half since Garret Richards in 2014.

• Ohtani is the eighth Major Leaguer since earned runs were official (1913) to record 40-plus strikeouts and zero earned runs in a four-start span.

A big reason Ohtani has been so successful, and why he only gets harder to hit the deeper he pitches into a game, is his baseball IQ and ability to adjust mid-game — whether to adjust his mechanics, his body or his game plan.

“It’s another magnificent outing,” Stassi said. “It was just amazing. He navigated through seven innings; he threw sliders, he threw splits, he threw fastballs, threw in some curveballs [and] called it a day.”

Ohtani has been masterful on the bump this season. That’s nothing new. Entering Wednesday’s matchup, his 33% swing-and-miss rate was the fourth-best in the American League (among pitchers with a minimum of 70 innings pitched). Meanwhile, three of his pitches (his splitter, curveball and slider) have a whiff rate above 43%. It was Ohtani’s splitter and slider that recorded the most whiffs vs. the Marlins (six whiffs and 11 whiffs, respectively).

And Ohtani only gets better the longer he’s in a game. He recorded just one strikeout his first time through the Marlins’ lineup, while he struck out five his second time through and four his third. That ability to get stronger as he progresses deeper into a game just goes back to his in-game adjustments and knowledge of the game.

“The line of communication that we have throughout the game [is awesome],” Stassi said. “He tells me what he likes and what he’s feeling, and then I’ll give him some reads on some hitters and then we’ll kind of talk about that. He didn’t do it this outing, but last outing he threw a 71 mph curveball, and then the next pitch [was] 81. So not only does he have all the pitches, but he can add and subtract velocities.

“Sometimes I have to take a step back and be like, ‘Whoa. This is special. This is unique. And this will not be done again. That level will not be done again.’”

Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani strikes out career-high 13 batters in 5-0 win over Kansas City Royals

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Shohei Ohtani adheres to strict routine in nearly every aspect of his life. When his latest mound start was delayed 12 minutes by a pregame ceremony honoring the Los Angeles Angels’ 2002 World Series champions, his meticulous preparation took a hit before he even threw a pitch.

A slightly bumpy beginning still led to a second straight incredible night for the two-way superstar.

Ohtani struck out a career-high 13 over eight dominant innings of two-hit ball, and the American League MVP also reached base three times in Los Angeles’ 5-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday.

After giving up two singles to start that delayed first inning, Ohtani (6-4) retired 16 straight Royals and 23 of the final 24 batters he faced. While matching the longest start of his major league career, he allowed just one baserunner over his final seven innings — on a walk that was quickly erased by a double play.

“I think the biggest thing was putting up that zero in the first inning after giving up those first two hits,” Ohtani said through his translator. “I was able to do that, and it set the tone for the game. I wanted to go as long as I could, but I wasn’t really thinking about the pitch count early in the game.”

With the backdrop of a rare Southern California lightning storm illuminating the sky far beyond center field at the Big A, Ohtani also had a single and two walks at the plate in his latest electrifying two-way performance.

One night after Ohtani hit two three-run homers and drove in a career-high eight runs in an extra-inning loss, he set a personal best for strikeouts by fanning Emmanuel Rivera on his 108th and final pitch.

“He just put us on his back,” Angels interim manager Phil Nevin said. “I thought about taking him out going into the eighth, and he was adamant: ‘No. This is mine. I’m staying.’ … What a day. What a performance by him.”

David MacKinnon got his first major league hit with an RBI single in the seventh for the Angels, who avoided a series sweep with their fourth victory in six games overall. Luis Rengifo had an RBI double in the seventh before scoring on that single to right by MacKinnon, who got his first career RBI two innings earlier with a sacrifice fly.

After scoring 18 runs in the previous two games at Angel Stadium, the Royals were shut out for the second time in four days and the 10th time this season. Kansas City still has won five of seven.

“That was a display,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “It’s a very unique repertoire of pitches. I don’t think you’re going to find as many guys with as many weapons as what we saw today. He was throwing three different sliders, plus a cutter and a curve. When the split started going, that’s when the strikeouts really started to happen, and he’s got 100 (mph) in the tank that he hardly ever showed. … It’s going to be a tough day at the plate.”

Ohtani is unbeatable on the mound lately, allowing just one run in his past 20 innings over three starts. In his most recent home start two weeks ago, he pitched seven innings of one-run ball and also homered in a victory that snapped the Angels’ franchise-record 14-game skid.

Whit Merrifield and Andrew Benintendi singled in the Royals’ first two at-bats against Ohtani, but he subsequently set down every batter he faced until Merrifield drew a one-out walk in the sixth — and Benintendi quickly grounded into a double play.

Ohtani’s fastball topped 99 mph twice in the second half of his start while he baffled Kansas City, getting a whopping 34 combined strikes on swing-and-misses or called strikes.

Daniel Lynch (3-7) wasn’t as effective for the Royals early on, but the left-hander resourcefully shut down the Angels until they loaded the bases in the fifth on two walks and an infield single. Lynch, who left after MacKinnon’s sacrifice fly, gave up three hits and five walks on a career-high 104 pitches.

Mike Trout got a rest day for the Angels, leaving their struggling lineup decidedly lacking punch. But MacKinnon came through as the team’s improbable cleanup hitter, getting first major league hit after getting called up last weekend for his MLB debut.

MacKinnon was pleased by his breakthrough swings, but other aspects of the game also thrilled him.

“I got to play the field behind Shohei and see how good he is,” MacKinnon said. “It’s crazy being here.”

TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: C Salvador Perez sat out after reinjuring his left thumb on a swing Tuesday night, but Matheny said the team is still determining the seriousness of the injury after an MRI exam.

Angels: RHP Jimmy Herget went on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder impingement. Right-handers Elvis Peguero and Oliver Ortega came up from Triple-A Salt Lake, while inconsistent rookie Reid Detmers went down just six starts after throwing a no-hitter.

UP NEXT

Royals: Zack Greinke is expected to come off the injured list Friday to start when Kansas City opens a three-game weekend series at home against Oakland. Greinke (0-4, 5.05 ERA) went on the IL three weeks ago with a strained forearm.

Angels: After a day off at home, Los Angeles opens a three-game weekend series against Seattle on Friday night. Neither team had confirmed a starter.

Shohei Ohtani’s homer, pitching gem help snap Los Angeles Angels’ 14-game losing streak

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Shohei Ohtani was facing only his second batter, and Phil Nevin, in his third night as the Los Angeles Angels’ interim manager, sensed something special might be afoot. He turned to his pitching coach, Matt Wise, and relayed his intuition.

“He’s got that look, doesn’t he?” Nevin said.

The Angels were struggling, floundering, and Ohtani — the anchor of a team suffering through the loss of Mike Trout, Anthony Rendon and Taylor Ward — delivered for them. His seven one-run innings and his well-timed home run propelled the Angels to a 5-2 victory against a red-hot Boston Red Sox team on Thursday night and ended their franchise-record-setting losing streak at 14 games.

It was the type of performance the Angels desperately needed.

It was the type of performance only Ohtani could provide.

“Shohei was unbelievable,” Trout said. “As always.”

The Angels’ losing streak was the longest ever for a team with a reigning MVP on its roster, passing the 13 straight by the 1985 Chicago Cubs of Ryne Sandberg and the 11 straight by the 1995 Houston Astros of Jeff Bagwell. But Ohtani, who won the American League’s Most Valuable Player Award unanimously last season, made sure it didn’t extend further. He became the fifth player since 1900 and the first since 1969 to hit a home run and earn a win in the victory that snapped a losing streak of at least 10 games, according to research by the Elias Sports Bureau.

“Obviously, definitely wanted to win this one,” Ohtani said through his interpreter. “Especially on the days I pitch — I just wanted to put the team in a spot to have a chance to win, and I felt like I was able to do that today.”

Coming off allowing nine runs in nine innings over his previous two starts, Ohtani limited the Red Sox — who were winners of seven in a row heading in — to six baserunners and generated 18 swings and misses, 15 more than he accumulated seven days earlier against the New York Yankees. He set a new season high in pitches (100) and fastball velocity (101 mph), and he also seemed to come alive offensively.

Ohtani slashed only .192/.333/.383 during the Angels’ 14-game losing streak, but he gave them a 2-1 lead with an opposite-field two-run homer in the fifth and added a line-drive single in the seventh. Andrew Velazquez, a light-hitting middle infielder who was riding an 0-for-22 slump, broke the game open with a three-run homer in the sixth, sending the Angels to their first win since May 24, when the team stood 10 games above .500.

The Angels’ postgame celebrations at home have been especially boisterous this season, complete with strobe lights, fire pits and giveaways. The prolonged absence of one elevated Thursday’s to another level.

“It felt like we won a playoff game today,” Velazquez said. “Just a big relief.”

The Angels’ losing streak was the longest for a team that was at least 10 games above .500 when that streak began, according to Elias. Only three teams have ever made the postseason despite a double-digit losing streak — the 2017 Los Angeles Dodgers, the 1982 Atlanta Braves and the 1951 New York Giants, none of whom dropped more than 11 straight.

The Angels, who abruptly fired Joe Maddon as their manager on Tuesday, are currently three games below .500 and 2½ games back of the sixth and final playoff spot in the American League, but they believe they can get back to resembling the team that dominated the first six weeks.

“We know what we’re capable of,” Velazquez said. “We have the same guys in here.”

The Angels outscored opponents by 53 runs through their first 44 games but were outscored by a combined 45 over their next 14.

Trout navigated through a career-worst 26-game hitless stretch, then tweaked his groin on Tuesday night. Rendon (wrist) and Ward (hamstring) landed on the injured list, robbing the Angels of the menacing top of the lineup that made them such a force for most of April and half of May. Ohtani struggled, the bullpen imploded, the starters couldn’t pitch deep into games and a short-handed offense consistently failed to score runs.

The Angels lost three consecutive one-run games to the Toronto Blue Jays, then were outscored 17-3 by the Yankees. The Philadelphia Phillies swept them in a three-game series, capturing the finale on the strength of Bryce Harper’s eighth-inning grand slam. Then the Red Sox won three consecutive one-run games, two of which saw the Angels get shut out.

It gave Nevin his first win as a major league manager — and it ultimately earned him the game ball.

“Shohei gave it to me,” Nevin said. “That was neat.”

Shohei Ohtani’s homer, pitching gem help snap Los Angeles Angels’ 14-game losing streak

ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Los Angeles Angels desperately needed a win, and Shohei Ohtani provided it almost singlehandedly.

Ohtani pitched seven innings of one-run ball against the red-hot Boston Red Sox and delivered a crucial home run, leading the Angels to a 5-2 victory that snapped a franchise-record 14-game losing streak on Thursday night.

Joe Maddon thinks Shohei Ohtani tipped pitches vs. Yankees

Angels manager Joe Maddon has some thoughts on Shohei Ohtani’s Yankees struggles.

The Angels two-way star was roughed up in the Bronx on Thursday, getting tagged for four earned runs on eight hits — three of them homers — over 3 2/3 innings in a 6-1 loss.

“They’re really good at reading pitches, they’re really good at it,” Maddon told reporters. “I’m not accusing anybody of anything except that they’re good at it. If you’re able to acquire things through natural means, I think it’s great. There are things that pitchers do that other teams can pick up on. We need to be more vigilant.”

Ohtani didn’t seem to have many answers for his poor showing, either.

“They have a great lineup, and if I don’t make my pitches, they’re going to hit my pitches hard, and that’s what happened,” Ohtani said through an interpreter. “I’m not sure [if I was tipping]. You should ask the other team.”

It was the second time the Yankees had handed Ohtani a beatdown on the mound. In his first go-round, he was tagged for seven earned runs over just 2/3 of an inning on June 30, 2021, an outing which included giving up four walks.

Aaron Boone, Maddon’s Yankees counterpart, was at least willing to play along with the idea his team is good at picking up opposing pitchers’ indicators.

“I think we are,” Boone said. “We’re going to hopefully continue to be good at it.”
