Slain Texas students and their grandfather remembered as ‘bright, shining stars’

Collins, 66, was visiting the family’s weekend ranch in Leon County with four of his seven grandchildren — brothers Waylon, 18, Carson, 16, and Hudson, 11, and their cousin, Bryson Collins, 11. They were killed there by a convicted murderer who had been the subject of one of the largest manhunts for an escaped inmate in Texas history.
Gonzalo Lopez, who escaped from a prisoner bus last month, was later killed in a shootout with officers.
“What happened to the Collins family is unspeakable,” Harris County Sheriff’s Det. David Crain, a close friend of the family, told CNN affiliate KTRK-TV, describing them as “bright, shinning stars.”

The family’s pastor, Steve Bezner, called Collins and his grandsons an “amazing family” that was “close-knit and of deep faith.”

Waylon Collins had graduated from Tomball High School just days before his death, KTRK reported.

“The loss of a student, for any reason, is heartbreaking, but to lose four in such a tragic way is excruciating,” Tomball Independent School District Superintendent Martha Salazar-Zamora said in a letter. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of these beloved students and grandfather.”

On Friday, friends and family shed tears and shared hugs during the vigil at the Tomball school district baseball field, where Waylon was an umpire for the little league.

Suspect was member of a violent prison gang

Lopez was killed in a shootout with authorities late Thursday, hours after he was named the suspect in the killing of Collins and his grandsons, officials said. Investigators believe Lopez broke into the family’s home and stole a truck.

Lopez was driving that truck when it was disabled with a spike strip in the town of Jourdanton, said Jason Clark, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Lopez then got into a firefight with officers after crashing the vehicle.

“He fired several rounds at officers and was armed with an AR-15 and a pistol,” said Clark, adding the firearms were likely also stolen from the Collins’ ranch.

No officers were injured.

Lopez was affiliated with a powerful and violent prison gang known as the Mexican Mafia, and had ties to San Antonio and the Rio Grande Valley area, according to the state’s public safety department.

He had been convicted of capital murder, attempted capital murder and aggravated kidnapping, the Texas Department of Public Safety said. He was serving two life sentences for those convictions.

The Collins’ ranch was within the perimeter police were searching following Lopez’s escape, which happened May 12 near Centerville as he was being taken from a facility in Gatesville to another unit in Huntsville for a medical appointment.

Centerville is around 120 miles north of Houston, according to officials.

Lopez was being driven in a separate, caged area of the prison bus but broke out of his restraints, cut through the metal and crawled out of the bottom of the cage, officials said.

He attacked the driver and forced the bus to a stop, authorities said. The two got out of the vehicle, and as another officer began approaching, Lopez went back into the bus and tried to drive it away.

Officers shot at the tires and stopped the vehicle, authorities said. Lopez then left the bus and ran into the woods off of Highway 7, according to authorities.

Lopez was on the state’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives List, with authorities offering up to $50,000 for information leading to his capture.

CNN’s Andy Rose, Raja Razek, Chuck Johnston, Rebekah Riess, Caroll Alvarado, Sharif Paget and Hannah Sarisohn contributed to this report.

Shining a light on synthetic dimensions

Humans experience the world in three dimensions, but a collaboration in Japan has developed a way to create synthetic dimensions to better understand the fundamental laws of the universe and possibly apply them to advanced technologies.

They published their results on January 28, 2022 in Science Advances.

“The concept of dimensionality has become a central fixture in diverse fields of contemporary physics and technology in past years,” said paper author Toshihiko Baba, professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Yokohama National University. “While inquiries into lower-dimensional materials and structures have been fruitful, rapid advances in topology have uncovered a further abundance of potentially useful phenomena depending on the dimensionality of the system, even going beyond the three spatial dimensions available in the world around us.”

Topology refers to an extension of geometry that mathematically describes spaces with properties preserved in continuous distortion, such as the twist of a mobius strip. When combined with light, according to Baba, these physical spaces can be directed in a way that allows researchers to induce highly complicated phenomena.

In the real world, from a line to a square to a cube, each dimension provides more information, as well requires more knowledge to accurately describe it. In topological photonics, researchers can create additional dimensions of a system, allowing for more degrees of freedom and multifaceted manipulation of properties previously inaccessible.

“Synthetic dimensions have made it possible to exploit higher-dimensional concepts in lower-dimensional devices with reduced complexity, as well as driving critical device functionalities such as on-chip optical isolation,” Baba said.

The researchers fabricated a synthetic dimension on a silicon ring resonator, using the same approach used to build complementary metal-oxide-semiconductors (CMOS), a computer chip that can store some memory. A ring resonator applies guides to control and split light waves according to specific parameters, such as particular bandwidths.

According to Baba, the silicon ring resonator photonic device acquired a “comb-like” optical spectra, resulting in coupled modes corresponding to a one-dimensional model. In other words, the device produced a measurable property—a synthetic dimension—that allowed the researchers to infer information about the rest of the system.

While the developed device comprises one ring, more could be stacked to cascade effects and quickly characterize optical frequency signals.

Critically, Baba said, their platform, even with stacked rings, is much smaller and compact than previous approaches, which employed optical fibers connected to various components.

“A more scalable silicon photonic chip platform provides a considerable advancement, as it allows photonics with synthetic dimensions to benefit from the mature and sophisticated CMOS commercial fabrication toolbox, while also creating the means for multi-dimensional topological phenomena to be introduced into novel device applications,” Baba said.

The flexibility of the system, including the ability to reconfigure it as necessary, complements equivalent static spaces in real space, which could help researchers bypass the dimensional constraints of real space to understand phenomena even beyond three dimensions, according to Baba.

“This work shows the possibility that topological and synthetic dimension photonics can be used practically with a silicon photonics integration platform,” Baba said. “Next, we plan to collect all topological and synthetic dimension photonic elements to build up a topological integrated circuit.”

Random: Twitch Streamer Encounters Double Shiny In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl Starter Battle

Image: MitchOG

You might have seen a shiny encounter in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl but have you seen a double shiny encounter before?

Twitch streamer MitchOG was doing a shiny-only run in the newest Pokémon remakes and managed to get the encounter of a lifetime – a shiny starter Turtwig and shiny Starly in the same battle. The odds of a shiny encounter are one-in-4096 and a double encounter is a one-in-almost 17 million chance.

It reportedly took the streamer around three and a half hours and 107 resets to encounter his first shiny (which ended up being a double encounter). Being the first battle in the game though, unfortunately, he wasn’t able to catch the shiny Starly – but it’s still pretty neat.

Since Mitch’s double shiny encounter, Pokémon fans around the world have been telling the streamer to go out and buy a lottery ticket – the odds are certainly better. If you would like some help catching your own shiny, be sure to check out our detailed guide:

Knicks’ Luka Samanic shining in NBA G-League

SAN ANTONIO — It was neat timing for the Knicks that two-way prospect Luka Samanic won G-League Player of the Week honors Tuesday while the Knicks were in Alamo City.

Samanic, a 2019 Spurs first-round pick whom San Antonio cut in training camp, is second in scoring in the G-League at 29.2 points. Defense is his issue, as a very flattering Spurs coach/team president Gregg Popovich alluded to before the Knicks faced the Spurs at AT&T Center.

Asked by The Post how tough a decision it was to cut Samanic in the third year of his rookie contract, Popovich admitted maybe the Knicks got a player.

“He’s got a lot of talent,” Popovich said. “He’s done a good job at this point. The sky’s the limit for him. If he sticks with it and do the things he’s got to do to improve defensively and get consistent. He’s a good kid and has a lot of talent. The future is bright for him.”

Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau, when the Knicks signed 6-foot-10 Samanic to a two-way contract, said it would be just “a G-League thing,” giving no indication he wanted the Croatian power forward with the big club yet.

But Samanic, 21, is turning heads. Thibodeau said he sees him all the time as the Westchester Knicks practice at Tarrytown. Samanic averaged 30 points, 12 rebounds and three assists this week.

“They practice in the building, so I get the chance to watch a little bit,” Thibodeau said. “He had a good week, obviously. He’s a good young prospect and he has to keep working. I try to watch practice and then I get feedback on what they’re doing. I talk to their coaches, also.”

When the Spurs cut Samanic, character and attitude were cited. One European scout told The Post recently one issue is he doesn’t love the game.

Popovich is friendly with Thibodeau but wouldn’t divulge whether he recommended Samanic.

“Historically we keep our conversations to ourselves and try not to share it with people like you,” Popovich said.

Popovich is leaving his post as U.S. Olympic coach. Thibodeau has Team USA experience but it didn’t sound as if he’s been talking to officials. Asked if he has thrown his hat in the ring, Thibodeau said, “You don’t throw your hat in the ring. They have the ring.”

Popovich said Thibodeau would be a good choice.

“Oh sure, there’s a lot of guys who would be fantastic,” Popovich said. “He’s one. That experience is great. The people we’re looking at are all great candidates. Everyone’s going to be happy about final selection.”

Thibodeau didn’t sound like he’s in USA talks.

“I enjoyed my experience and I’m sure there are a number of great candidates that they have,” he said. “So, anyone that has an opportunity to do it, I would strongly suggest they do it.”
