“Superager” Genes Can Shave a Decade Off Heart Age, Scientists Say

The genes of people who live to be over the age of 100 could one day help others stay heart-healthy for longer, according to some exciting new research.

A team of British and Italian researchers has found that a specific mutated gene in so-called “superagers” who make it into their centenarian years could be used to help those with heart failure turn back the clock by ten years, as detailed in a groundbreaking study published in the journal Cardiovascular Research.

Building on the discovery of the longevity-associated gene variant known as BPIFB4 in 2018, the researchers conducted experiments on human cells in test tubes and later on mice to see if the genes were still able to turn back the biological clock when introduced in a lab instead of being inherited.

Incredibly, they found that its introduction to damaged cells can both halt and even reverse heart aging.

“The cells of the elderly patients, in particular those that support the construction of new blood vessels, called ‘pericytes’, were found to be less performing and more aged,” said Monica Cattaneo, a researcher at the MultiMedica Group in Italy and co-author, in a press release.

“By adding the longevity gene/protein to the test tube, we observed a process of cardiac rejuvenation: the cardiac cells of elderly heart failure patients have resumed functioning properly, proving to be more efficient in building new blood vessels,” Cattaneo added.

The researchers also found that those same cells seemed to have reduced expression of BPIFB4 as well. In other words, people who tend to develop heart problems may actually be missing this key longevity protein.

As University of Bristol professor and co-author Paolo Madedu notes, these findings suggest that introducing a protein to the cells of patients with heart problems may be an alternative to gene therapy, which, in spite of being a promising branch of medical treatment, still carries a number of associated risks, including the potential of developing cancer.

“Our findings confirm the healthy mutant gene can reverse the decline of heart performance in older people,” Madedu said in the press release. “We are now interested in determining if giving the protein instead of the gene can also work.”

Obviously, this kind of potential treatment will take many years to perfect — but regardless, this could be a huge win in the war against heart disease.

Watch an SUV-sized asteroid zoom by Earth in close shave flyby

Asteroid 2023 BU zipped past Earth Thursday night (Jan. 26) to the delight of amateur astronomers worldwide. For skywatchers without access to a telescope or those who had their view hampered by bad weather, luckily the Italy-based Virtual Telescope Project was there to observe the event and livestream the whole thing for free.

The Virtual Telescope is a robotic telescope operated by Italian amateur astronomer Gianluca Masi near Rome, Italy. As 2023 BU hurtled toward Earth, the telescope was able to track the rock through a gap in the clouds when it was about 13,670 miles (22,000 kilometers) from the closest point on Earth’s surface (about the altitude of the GPS navigation satellite constellation) and 22,990 miles (37,000 km) from the Virtual Telescope.

Masi, who shared an hour-long webcast of the observations on the Virtual Telescope website, wasn’t able to capture the closest approach as clouds rolled in, however. Nonetheless, the Virtual Telescope Project was able to get a good look at the car-sized rock, seen in time-lapse above.

The rock, discovered less than a week ago on Saturday (Jan. 21), passed above the southern tip of South America at 7:27 p.m. EST on Thursday Jan. 26 (0027 GMT on Jan. 27), at a distance of only 2,240 miles (3,600 km) at its closest point to Earth’s surface.

This close approach makes 2023 BU the fourth nearest asteroid ever observed from Earth, with the exception of five space rocks that were detected before diving into Earth’s atmosphere

Only 11.5 to 28 feet wide (3.5 to 8.5 meters), 2023 BU posed no danger to the planet. If the trajectories of the two bodies had intersected, the asteroid would mostly have burned up in the atmosphere with only small fragments possibly falling to the ground as meteorites

In the videos and images shared by Masi, the asteroid is seen as a small bright dot in the center of the frame, while the longer, brighter lines are the surrounding stars. In reality, of course, it was the asteroid that was moving with respect to Earth, traveling at a speed of 21,000 mph (33,800 km/h) with respect to Earth. As Masi’s computerized telescope tracked its positionthe rock appeared stationary in the images while rendering the stars as these moving streaks.

The gravitational kick that 2023 BU received during its encounter with Earth will alter the shape of its orbit around the sun. Previously, the space rock followed a rather circular orbit, completing one lap around the sun in 359 days. From now on, BU 2023 will travel through the inner solar system on a more elliptical path, venturing half way toward Mars at the farthest point of its orbit. This alteration will add 66 days to BU 2023’s orbital period.

The asteroid was discovered by famed Crimea-based astronomer and astrophotographer Gennadiy Borisov, the same man who in 2018 found the first interstellar comet, which now bears his name, Borisov.

Dollar Shave Club Lays Off MEL Staff, Source Says, and Seeks a Buyer

  • Dollar Shave Club laid off MEL Magazine’s editorial team on Wednesday, a source said.
  • The site became a media-industry darling despite being owned by a razor brand.
  • MEL does not run advertising but recently launched paid newsletters.
  • See more stories on Insider’s business page.

Dollar Shave Club is laying off the staff of MEL Magazine, its men’s lifestyle and culture website, a person with direct knowledge of the matter said.

MEL staffers were informed of the layoffs on Wednesday. The publication is seeking a buyer and may face shutting down if it doesn’t find one.

It was unclear how many people were affected. MEL’s masthead lists about 20 people, plus 16 contributors.

“After six years of successful partnership and transforming the men’s health and media spaces for the better, MEL and Dollar Shave Club’s financial relationship will come to an end in 60 days,” Editor in Chief Josh Schollmeyer said in a statement.

Schollmeyer added: “MEL will stop publishing effective Wednesday, and the complete focus will now be on finding the right new owner. This has always been a part of the plan for our brand-backed partnership, and we’re incredibly proud of what we’ve built together.

“We look forward to our next phase of opportunities and growth, thank our incredible team and readers for their support and can now finally create all of the razor content we’ve been dying to explore.”

A spokesperson for Dollar Shave Club did not immediately return a request for comment.

Founded in 2015, MEL won industry attention for going beyond the traditional topics of men’s media like cars and fitness and instead publishing stories about toxic masculinity alongside cultural coverage and funny material. On Wednesday, popular articles on the site included stories about why Irish people dislike the band U2, the ethics of saving nude photos sent by an ex, and the black market for counterfeit Viagra.

Dollar Shave Club launched MEL amid a wave of brand-backed publications — projects that often ended abruptly, like in the case of Casper and Airbnb. MEL published on Medium before becoming a stand-alone site in 2018. While the publication covered men’s grooming, it maintained an editorial wall with Dollar Shave Club and was not a sponsored-content vehicle.

That separation raised questions about how much financial sense MEL made for the razor seller. Michael Dubin, the founder and former CEO of Dollar Shave Club who helped start MEL, stepped down from Dollar Shave Club earlier this year. (Unilever acquired the company in 2016 for $1 billion, according to Fortune.)

“When I interviewed for the MEL job, Michael Dubin told me the project would be ‘editorially pure,’ and he kept that promise,” John McDermott, a founding MEL writer who now works as a freelancer, said.

“Dubin and Josh gave us the time and space to take risks and find our voice, which is why MEL cultivated such a loyal following,” McDermott added. “MEL never would have been as successful if we didn’t have that creative freedom early on, and I can’t imagine another business organization would provide the same level of support.”

MEL’s site has no ads, but the publisher sells merchandise and has sought to bring in revenue through paid newsletters, which launched this month.

Prospective buyers for MEL remain unclear.

The author of this story has previously written for MEL.
