Cowboys’ Brett Maher shaky in warmups ahead of 49ers game; team reportedly practices extra two-point plays

Dallas Cowboys kicker Brett Maher had himself an awful game last week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,

On each of the Cowboys’ first four touchdowns, Maher missed the extra point. He pushed the first two kicks wide to the right, then pulled the third one wide to the left. On the fourth kick, he hit the outside of the upright. He was the first kicker in NFL history to miss four extra points in a playoff game. (He did convert the extra point on Dallas’ fifth touchdown.)

Despite the poor performance, the Cowboys staunchly supported him throughout the week. Maher had gone 50 of 53 on extra points during the regular season, as well as 29 of 32 on field goals.

“I’m Money Maher’s biggest fan,” Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott said following the team’s win over Tampa. “I talked to him individually after the game, just told him, ‘Hey let that go, we’re going to need it’ I just played like s— a week ago, so that happens. So I mean that happens. Knowing what that guy’s done, with the resiliency he’s shown throughout his career. Personally, no doubt that he’ll comeback and be perfect and help us win.”

Maher also got vocal support from Mike McCarthy and CeeDee Lamb. Nevertheless, during the week leading up to their divisional round game against the San Francisco 49ers, the Cowboys signed kicker Tristan Vizcaino to the practice squad, to give them another option in place of Maher for Sunday night. But Dallas didn’t elevate Vizcaino to the active roster, so Maher will be their kicker.

And apparently, he had a rough go of it during warmups. And not just when it comes to whether or not he was making his kicks. The 49ers apparently did not take kindly to Maher warming up on their side of the field, briefly interrupting his warmup before eventually allowing him to kick again.

Oh, and he did struggle to make the kicks as well. According to The Athletic, Maher missed at least four kicks during the early portion of his warmups, pushing them all to the right.

Things apparently went so badly (he missed two more kicks) that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones walked onto the field during warmups to give Maher a pep talk. To put it kindly, this is highly unusual, although Maher then went on to make his next three attempts.

That is certainly not the type of news the Cowboys want to get ahead of the most important game of their season. It might influence their decision-making when it comes to whether or not to trust Maher in kick-or-go-for-it situations, though, because Cowboys special teams coach John Fassel is a believer in the yips. In fact, according to the Fox broadcast, the Cowboys have twice the number of two-point conversion plays as they did last week — in case Maher continues to struggle.

“I believe in the hot hand, and I believe in the yips, absolutely,” Fassel said, via ESPN. “And you know, you wonder sometimes how you get into the yips, and you wonder sometimes how you get back into the hot hand. I think it’s keep stepping up to the line and shooting that thing. We missed a couple of free throws [Monday] … He had a hot hand. Let’s face it, he only missed [six] kicks all season. The yips happen, so I expect a hot hand coming up.”

If his warmup kicks are an indication, Maher may not have rediscovered the hot hand just yet.

No respite in Ukraine fighting as shaky Russian truce nears end | News

Ukrainians and Russians mark Orthodox Christmas under the shadow of war, as reports of fighting come from the eastern Donbas region despite Russian President Vladimir Putin unilaterally ordering his forces to pause attacks.

Ukraine rejected the purported 36-hour ceasefire from midday on Friday to mark Orthodox Christmas, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy describing it as a ploy by Putin to buy time to reinforce troops that have taken heavy losses this week.

The Russian defence ministry on Saturday insisted its forces were observing the ceasefire until midnight local time (21:00 GMT) which is 11pm in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, but added that its army had repelled attacks by Kyiv forces in eastern Ukraine and killed dozens of Ukrainian soldiers on Friday.

In a Facebook post, the general staff of Ukraine’s armed forces said Russian troops had shelled dozens of positions and settlements along the front line on Saturday.

President Zelenskyy said the attacks showed Moscow could not be trusted.

“They were saying something about a supposed ceasefire. The reality, however, was that Russian shells once again hit Bakhmut and other Ukrainian positions,” he said in a video address on Saturday.

No respite from fighting

Humanitarian volunteer Vasyl Liesin questioned the unilateral ceasefire.

“When Putin says there’s a ceasefire, it’s actually the other way round: there’s no ceasefire,” the 30-year-old told Reuters on Saturday.

They shelled us a lot yesterday. During the night, it was more or less calm. But that’s how it usually is: one day there’s shelling, the next day it’s calmer.”

Olha, who declined to give her surname, poured scorn on the idea of any Christmas respite from Russia’s onslaught. “I think they’re tricking us, it’s pretty obvious to me,” the 75-year-old said.

“What else can I tell you? If someone makes a promise, that someone must fulfil it. Promises are made to be kept. I just don’t understand, what do they need?”

Russia said its troops had only returned artillery fire when fired upon by Ukrainian forces.

Reuters was not able to ascertain the origin of the shells heard in Bakhmut.

The head of Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region on Saturday reported two civilian deaths the previous day from Russian attacks in the fiercely contested city of Bakhmut and to its north, in Krasna Hora.

In the southern Kherson region, Governor Yaroslav Yanushevych said on Saturday that Russian forces shelled 39 times on Friday, hitting houses and apartment buildings, as well as a fire station. One person was killed and seven others were wounded.

The Ukrainian governor of the front-line eastern Luhansk province, Serhiy Haidai, said that in the first three hours of the purported ceasefire, Russians had shelled Ukrainian positions 14 times and stormed one settlement three times.

The Ministry of Defence in the United Kingdom, a leading supplier of military aid to Ukraine, said on Saturday that “fighting has continued at a routine level into the Orthodox Christmas period.”

Putin cut a lonely figure

In Moscow, 70-year-old Putin cut a lonely figure as he stood by himself at a service at a Kremlin church, the Cathedral of the Annunciation, to mark Orthodox Christmas.

Putin on Saturday praised the Russian Orthodox Church for supporting Moscow’s forces fighting in Ukraine in a Christmas message designed to rally people behind his vision of modern Russia.

In his message issued by Kremlin, accompanied on the Kremlin website by an image of him standing before religious icons, Putin made it clear he saw the Russian Orthodox Church as an important stabilising force for society at a time he has cast as a historical clash between Russia and the West over Ukraine and other issues.

“It is deeply gratifying to note the enormous constructive contribution of the Russian Orthodox Church and other Christian denominations in unifying society, preserving our historical memory, educating youth and strengthening the institution of family,” said Putin.

Historic service in Kyiv

In the 1,000-year-old Lavra Cathedral in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, the Christmas service on Saturday was delivered in the Ukrainian language – instead of Russian – for the first time in decades, highlighting how Ukraine is seeking to jettison Moscow’s remaining influences over religious, cultural and economic life in the country.

Security was tight at the ceremony as worshippers had their passports checked and had to walk through metal detectors. Orthodox Christians observe Christmas on January 7.

In Russia and Ukraine, Orthodox Christianity is the dominant religion and used to be seen as one of the strongest bonds tying the two nations.

Ukrainians have now largely turned their backs on the Russian Orthodox Church whose head Patriarch Kirill has backed the invasion.

Ukraine’s government on Thursday took over the administration of the revered Lavra complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, from the Russian Orthodox Church and allowed the Ukrainian church to use it for the Christmas service.

Anatol Lieven of Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft said the Russian Orthodox Church is acting as “a pillar of the Russian state” in line with its ancient identity.

“[It is] a central force in Russian nationalism,” he said, adding that the church’s support for the war has created great anger among Ukrainians.

Ukrainian Presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak on Saturday called Moscow’s ceasefire “fake” and accused Russian troops of firing along the entire contact line.

The United States, which announced on Friday $3.75bn in defence aid to Ukraine, called the ceasefire a “cynical” ploy.

Putin’s order to stop fighting came after Moscow suffered its worst loss of life yet, with Ukrainian attacks killing at least 89 troops in the eastern town of Makiivka.

Dow Jones Futures Rise As Nike Jumps; Market Rally Still Shaky As Tesla Meltdown Continues

Dow Jones futures rose modestly after hours, along with S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq futures, with FedEx (FDX)  and Nike (NKE) earnings leading the charge.

X

The stock market rally bounced modestly Tuesday, snapping a four-day losing streak.

Meanwhile, Apple (AAPL) flirted with undercutting its bear market low, a day after Amazon.com (AMZN) did.

Tesla (TSLA) continued to plunge. TSLA stock has now round-tripped its gains since the August 2020 stock split.

On the plus side, oil field services plays Schlumberger (SLB), Halliburton (HAL) and ProFrac (ACDC) are showing strength, with Schlumberger stock and ACDC stock flashing early buy points Tuesday.

The video embedded in the article discussed Tuesday’s market action and analyzed SLB stock, Halliburton and ProFrac.

Nike, FedEx Earnings

Dow Jones giant Nike and FedEx reported earnings late Tuesday, also offering some sense about the holiday shopping season.

Nike earnings and sales topped views, but inventories surged 43% vs. a year earlier. Margins fell due to markdowns. NKE stock spiked 13% after hours, signaling a move back above  the 200-day line. Shares edged up 0.2% to 103.21 on Tuesday.

FedEx earnings topped views, but revenue fell short. FDX stock rose 5% in extended trade. Shares closed down 2.6% to 164.35, below the 50-day line.

Dow Jones Futures Today

Dow Jones futures climbed 0.65% vs. fair value, with NKE stock offering a boost. S&P 500 futures advanced 0.55%. Nasdaq 100 futures rallied 0.65%.

The 10-year Treasury yield climbed 3 basis points to 3.71%.

Remember that overnight action in Dow futures and elsewhere doesn’t necessarily translate into actual trading in the next regular stock market session.

Stock Market Rally

The stock market rally erased opening losses and closed slightly higher.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.3% in Tuesday’s stock market trading. The S&P 500 index climbed 0.1%, with Tesla stock the index’s worst performer. The Nasdaq composite edged up 1 point. The small-cap Russell 2000 advanced 0.5%.

Apple stock fell as low as 129.89, within 1% of its June bear-market low of 129.04. Shares rebounded to close down 7 cents to 132.30. Amazon stock edged up 0.3% after briefly undercutting Monday’s fresh bear low.

U.S. crude oil prices rose 1.2% to $76.09 a barrel. Natural gas prices sank 9% after tumbling more than 11% on Monday.

The 10-year Treasury yield rose 10 basis points to 3.68%, after popping 10 basis points on Monday. The Bank of Japan on Tuesday turned slightly hawkish, letting Japan’s 10-year yield rise as high as 0.5%.

The 2-year yield, more closely tied to Fed policy, was essentially flat at 4.27%.

On Friday, investors will get the November PCE inflation report, with economists expecting another notable drop in overall and core inflation.

ETFs

Among growth ETFs, the iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (IGV) rose 0.5%. The VanEck Vectors Semiconductor ETF (SMH) fell 0.6%.

Reflecting more-speculative story stocks, ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK) edged down 0.2%, hitting a fresh five-year low. ARK Genomics ETF (ARKG) rose 0.8%. Tesla is a major holding across Ark Invest’s ETFs.

SPDR S&P Metals & Mining ETF (XME) popped 2.6% and the Global X U.S. Infrastructure Development ETF (PAVE) edged up 0.4%. U.S. Global Jets ETF (JETS) advanced 0.4%. SPDR S&P Homebuilders ETF (XHB) gave up 0.55%. The Energy Select SPDR ETF (XLE) rebounded 1.5% and the Financial Select SPDR ETF (XLF) climbed 0.4%. The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) closed fractionally lower.

Five Best Chinese Stocks To Watch Now

Stocks Near Buy Points

Oil services firms are rallying, even with crude prices near one-year lows, perhaps in anticipation of stronger prices in 2023. Exxon Mobil (XOM) and Chevron (CVX) recently released their capital spending plans for next year, suggesting strong demand for services firms such as Halliburton, Schlumberger, ProFrac and more.

SLB stock rose 3.9% to 51.76, moving back above the 50-day and 21-day moving averages and arguably breaking a tight downward-sloping trendline, making a case for an early entry. Schlumberger stock is back in a still-valid buy zone from a deep cup base. SLB stock is set to have a new base with a 56.14 buy point after this week.

Fellow oil services giant Halliburton bounced above its 21-day line, up 3.8% to 37.42, still close to its 50-day line. HAL stock has a 40.09 buy point from a 47%-deep cup-with-handle base, according to MarketSmith analysis. It doesn’t have an obvious early entry. The handle will be long enough to be its own base after this week.

ProFrac stock jumped 6.9% to 23.23, back above its 50-day and 21-day lines and breaking a recent downtrend, much like SLB stock. That could serve as an early entry. ACDC stock should have a new consolidation with a 27.10 buy point after this week. ProFrac stock came public at 18 a share. It’s had three bases since then, with the breakouts not working for long.

Tesla Stock

Tesla stock dived 8.1% to 137.80, hitting yet another two-year low. Shares of the EV giant have plunged 67% from the November 2021 peak and 29% just in December.

Tesla stock has now round-tripped its advance since its August 2020 5-for-1 stock split. (TSLA stock split 3-for-1 in August 2022 as well.)

Tesla China sales slowed for a second straight week, according to weekly registration data. That’s despite ever-increasing year-end incentives, which are set to end on Jan. 1 along with China EV subsidies.

Elon Musk’s Twitter saga is raising concerns of significant damage to the Tesla brand. Many long-term notable TSLA bulls are increasingly critical of Musk.

Evercore and Daiwa Capital Markets on Tuesday cut TSLA stock price targets, both citing Twitter. Oppenheimer downgraded Tesla on Monday.

Tesla stock failed to rally Monday despite Elon Musk saying he would step down as Twitter CEO after polling Twitter users on that issue.

Shares kept tumbling Tuesday even as the major indexes and many leading stocks tried to make a stand. The heavy volume selling in the past several weeks suggests big institutions are unloading or paring TSLA stock holdings.

Late Tuesday, Musk says he will step down as Twitter chief as soon as he finds a successor and that he’ll run the software and server teams.

At some point Tesla stock may rebound and go on another run, but that could be months or even years away.

Tesla Vs. BYD: Which  EV Giant Is The Better Buy?

Market Rally Analysis

After a sharp sell-off from the Dec. 13 highs, the stock market rally ended its losing streak, barely.

The major indexes were looking oversold and arguably “due” for a bounce. They got one, though it wasn’t much.

The Dow Jones found support at the 50-day line, but the other key indexes didn’t make any notable technical  moves.

The stock market rally remains under pressure.

AAPL stock bounced from near bear market lows, but that doesn’t mean it’ll continue to do so.

Many leading stocks found support at key levels. But whether they’ll hold and rebound strongly is largely dependent on the overall market.

Energy names could be a partial exception, given how they trade on underlying crude oil or natural gas prices. Oil services firms such as SLB stock and coal producers like Consolidated Energy are doing better right now.

Time The Market With IBD’s ETF Market Strategy

What To Do Now

It’s not a good time to be buying stocks. While the major indexes held their ground and some top stocks didn’t fall apart, the market rally is still weak.

The S&P 500 regaining the 50-day line would seem like a minimum sign of strength, with the 200-day and December highs much-bigger tests.

Even if the market rebounds, Tesla’s continued meltdown Tuesday shows that not all stocks will follow.

If you do feel compelled to play this market, take pilot positions and be ready to take quick profits and cut losses short.

Keep looking for stocks holding up and finding support at key levels. Stocks with strong relative strength during weak markets can be leaders in the next advance.

Q4 off to shaky start as stocks stumble, but oil jumps

LONDON, Oct 3 (Reuters) – The final quarter of the year got off to a shaky start on Monday, with world stocks languishing at their lowest levels since late 2020 – when the global economy was still reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Oil prices jumped more than 4% as the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies, a group known as OPEC+, said it would consider reducing output, while sterling rallied after the British government said it would reverse a controversial tax cut that had rocked UK markets.

But sentiment across markets remained frail given worries that aggressive interest rate hikes from the U.S. Federal Reserve and others raise global recession risks.

European equity markets were a sea of red, with the STOXX 600 index down 0.4%, pulling back from earlier losses of 1.4% (.STOXX). Shares in beleaguered Swiss bank Credit Suisse (CSGN.S) fell around 10% in early trading, reflecting market concern about the group as it finalises a restructuring programme due to be announced on Oct. 27.

Asian stocks mostly fell in holiday-thinned trade although Japanese markets found support on strong energy and semiconductor shares (.N225).

U.S. stock futures were mixed and MSCI’s world equity index (.MIWD00000PUS) fell to its lowest level since late 2020.

News of the British government’s tax U-turn didn’t appear to lift broader sentiment but probably helps to calm market worries about fiscal excess, said Kallum Pickering, senior economist at Berenberg Bank in London.

“Markets seem to have lowered their expectations for the BoE bank rate while gilt yields have fallen further from their recent highs. Less tight financial conditions may ease the near-term shock on economic performance,” said Pickering.

MSCI’s 47-country world stocks index rallied 10% between July and mid-August. But aggressive Fed rate hikes soon came swinging back in, and that index has plunged 15% since, leaving it down 25% and $18 trillion so far this year.

Central banks in Australia and New Zealand meet this week and are expected to deliver further rate increases.

Oil prices rallied on reports what OPEC+ will this week consider cutting output by more than 1 million barrels a day, for its biggest reduction since the pandemic, in a bid to support the market. Brent crude futures rose more than 4% to almost $89 a barrel and U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was up 4.5%, at $83 a barrel.

UK RESPITE

Britain’s battered pound was up around 0.4% at $1.12085 and its government bond yields fell, pushing their price up, following the UK policy reversal , .

“From a market perspective, it is a good step in the right direction. It will take time for markets to buy the message but it should ease the pressure,” said Jan Von Gerich, chief analyst at Nordea. “Questions still remain and sterling will likely remain under pressure.”

London’s FTSE-100 stock index was down 0.5% (.FTSE), falling in line with other markets.

Japan’s yen meanwhile briefly fell as low as 145.4 to the dollar even as Japan’s finance minister, Shunichi Suzuki, said that the government would take “decisive steps” to prevent sharp currency moves.

It was the first time the yen has fallen through the 145 barrier since Sept. 22, when Japan intervened to prop up its currency for the first time since 1998.

Trade across Asia was generally subdued. South Korea had a national holiday and China entered its “Golden Week” break on Monday. Hong Kong is closed for a public holiday on Tuesday.

Gold was just 0.4% firmer to $1,665.79 an ounce .

Survivors of Texas plane crash were headed to Astros game in Boston: ‘shaky and shocked’

The survivors of the plane crash in Texas on Tuesday were headed to an Astros game in Boston, and recounted feeling “shaky and shocked” following the crash.

“When it finally stopped everyone went ‘Get out! Get out! Get out!’ We jumped out on that inflatable thing and then everyone went ‘Get away!’” passenger Cheryl McCaskill of Cypress, told the Houston Chronicle.

All 21 people on board the plane were safely evacuated, and had left the airport on Tuesday morning to cheer on the Astros as they faced off against the Boston Red Sox in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series, Fox 26 reported.

“They’re going to Boston to the Astros game for entertainment, a joyful event, then this happens,” Texas Emergency Management District Coordinator Ronald Walker said.

PLANE CRASHES IN TEXAS FIELD WITH 21 ON BOARD, INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY

Many of the passengers even left the Houston Executive Airport in Brookshire wearing their Astros jersey as the plane behind them was still engulfed in flames, Fox 26 reported.

McCaskill described feeling “shaky and shocked” after she ran from the burning plane in her Astros jersey.

“I lost my shoes,” she added.

“Yes. Thank the Lord,” Walker said of the passengers being able to tell the tale of surviving a plane crash.

The McDonnell Douglas MD-87 had rolled through a fence and caught fire at the Houston Executive Airport, the FAA said. The plane is registered to a Houston-area investment firm.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board is investigating what caused the crash, with the Texas Division of Emergency Management also assisting the federal agencies.

“It’s an accident. Everybody came out safe. It’s under investigation,” one investigator told Fox 26.

Yankees’ Aroldis Chapman velocity still down in shaky outing

SEATTLE — At least Aroldis Chapman didn’t blow this one.

But he is still far from right.

The Yankees used Chapman in the lowest of low leverage situations in Tuesday’s 12-1 win over the Mariners and the left-hander was anything from dominant in yet another alarming performance.

His velocity was down — dipping to 94 mph on more than one occasion and loaded the bases on a single and two walks before finally finishing the game without giving up a run.

Aaron Boone said Chapman looked “better” than in his previous recent outings and blamed his inefficiency on the fact he might not have been “reaching back for all his velocity” due to the situation and was instead trying to regain his delivery.

“Hopefully this was a step forward for him,’’ Boone said.

Asked if Chapman would be used as his closer, Boone emphasized the desire to get Chapman in more games, regardless of they score.

“It could be closing or it could be in a different situation,’’ Boone said. “We want to get him locked back in.”

Chapman had given up leads in three consecutive appearances — and had an ERA of 18.90 in his 10 previous outings before Tuesday.

Boone said he still believes they can get an effective Chapman back if they get his mechanics straightened out.

“It’s as simple as getting him unlocked from a delivery standpoint,’’ Boone said. “Once we get that going, we’re not that far removed from the best Aroldis Chapman we’ve ever seen.”

Chapman shot back at critics on Instagram on Monday night.

“For all those people that criticize my bad moments, I will tell them that I do not know how my story ends, but in its pages you will never read, ‘I gave up,’” Chapman wrote in both English and Spanish. “So I will move on. I still have many wars to win and many mouths to shut up.”

Zack Britton (hamstring) threw another bullpen session that went well, according to Boone, but their bullpen took another hit when Darren O’Day was put on the IL with a left hamstring strain.

The right-hander already has been sidelined this season with a strained rotator cuff. Nick Nelson was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to take his spot on the roster.

Domingo German blamed his bad last four starts on mechanical issues.

“One of the things that usually gets me in trouble is my balance on the mound,’’ German said through an interpreter. “I’m falling off to one side and that’s what causes my command to not be as good.”

It’s resulted in an ugly stretch for the right-hander, who enters his start on Wednesday having allowed 18 runs — 17 earned — in 15 innings in four outings (9.98 ERA), which brought his season ERA from 3.12 to 4.50.

The Yankees still are awaiting test results to determine the next course of action for Clint Frazier, who is on the IL with vertigo. … Boone said Michael King’s role is “fluid and flexible” at this point after the right-hander made his last appearance out of the bullpen following six consecutive starts. This season, the right-hander is 0-3 with a 5.47 ERA over 24 ²/₃ innings in six starts compared to 0-1 with a 1.90 ERA over 23 ¹/₃ innings in eight relief appearances.
