Thanksgiving tradition started by mistaken text lives on for a seventh year

Comment

Just two days ahead of Thanksgiving, Jamal Hinton told fans what they wanted to hear: “To answer all your questions, yes Thanksgiving year 7 is planned out! See you guys Thursday!” he posted on Twitter on Tuesday.

Fans had been waiting with bated breath for Hinton to confirm his plans for an annual Thanksgiving meal with Wanda Dench — a now 65-year-old grandmother who accidentally texted him six years ago, inviting him to Thanksgiving.

As people fear the fate of Twitter amid Elon Musk’s recent takeover and the turmoil that has ensued, some users expressed worry that they might miss the long-awaited selfie of Hinton and Dench, which the unlikely pair post on social media each year.

“I hope twitter survives at least til next week so we can get our annual update from them,” one fan wrote Friday.

“Can Twitter hang on until Jamal Hinton and Wanda Dench share their annual Thanksgiving photo?” another tweeted Nov. 12. “That’s just DAYS away.”

Although their selfie has yet to be posted, it’s clear that the touching Thanksgiving tradition will, indeed, carry on for a seventh straight year — and the internet is delighted.

“This a Thanksgiving staple now like yams and mac & cheese,” someone tweeted after Hinton confirmed their plans.

The story started in November 2016, when Dench accidentally sent a text message to Hinton, thinking it was her grandson. She invited him to Thanksgiving.

When Hinton, then 17, received the message from an unknown number, he asked who it was. Dench responded: “Your grandma.”

“Grandma? Can I have a picture?” Hinton replied. He received a selfie of Dench, whom he had never seen before.

Hinton wrote back: “You not my grandma,” with a laughing emoji, then jokingly asked: “Can I still get a plate tho?”

Dench earnestly responded: “Of course you can. That’s what [grandmas] do … feed every one.”

Hinton took her up on the invitation, and so began an ongoing tradition — and an enduring friendship. Every year since the text message mix-up, Hinton has attended Dench’s Thanksgiving meal at her home in Mesa, Ariz. — a 25-minute drive from where he lives in Phoenix.

After nearly a decade of Thanksgiving holidays spent together with their respective families, people have still not stopped swooning over Hinton and Dench’s heartwarming bond. Year after year, devoted fans enthusiastically count down to their annual selfie.

They have supported each other through hardships, including the sudden death of Dench’s husband of 42 years, Lonnie Dench, who also developed a close relationship with Hinton, and was an active participant in their Thanksgiving tradition. He died of covid-19 complications in April 2020.

Before their first Thanksgiving meal without Lonnie Dench, Hinton tweeted: “Thanksgiving isn’t going to be the same anymore but we will make the best of it.”

“I don’t have my beloved Lonnie with me, but I will be with family I love dearly,” Dench echoed in a tweet, sharing a photo of her family, along with Hinton and his girlfriend, Mikaela.

In September, Dench got her first tattoo to memorialize her husband and parents, and, naturally, Hinton accompanied her for the appointment.

“I got three shooting stars. Each one represents my Guardian Angels in Heaven — my husband who stands for integrity, my mother who was courageous, and my father who was about unconditional Love,” Dench later tweeted.

Hinton and Dench’s feel-good friendship is set to be the subject of an upcoming Netflix film called “The Thanksgiving Text.” Hinton announced the partnership last December, though few details — including the release date — have been publicized.

“We are excited to share our story with the world,” Dench and Hinton said in a joint statement. “We hope it inspires more people to reach out and make connections that they wouldn’t ordinarily make.”

North Korea fires two ballistic missiles in seventh of recent launches

TOKYO, Oct 9 (Reuters) – North Korea fired two ballistic missiles early on Sunday, authorities in neighbouring countries said, the seventh such launch by Pyongyang in recent days that added to widespread alarm in Washington and its allies in Tokyo and Seoul.

Officials in the South Korean capital have said the uptick in the North’s missile launches could signal it is closer than ever to resuming nuclear testing for the first time since 2017, with preparations observed at its test site for months.

Both of Sunday’s missiles reached an altitude of 100 km (60 miles) and covered 350 km (218 miles), Japan’s state minister of defence, Toshiro Ino, told reporters.

The first was fired at about 1:47 a.m. (1647 GMT) and the second some six minutes later.

They fell outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone, and authorities were looking into what type they were, including the possibility that they were submarine-launched ballistic missiles, he added.

The U.S. military said it was consulting closely with allies and partners following the launches, which it said highlighted the “destabilizing impact” of the North Korean nuclear arms and ballistic missile programs.

Still, the United States assessed that the latest launches did not pose a threat to U.S. personnel or American allies.

“The U.S. commitments to the defence of the Republic of Korea and Japan remain ironclad,” the Hawaii-based U.S. Indo-Pacific Command said in a statement.

The latest missile launches from the Muncheon area on North Korea’s east coast are a “serious provocation” that harms peace, South Korean authorities said.

On Tuesday, North Korea test-fired a ballistic missile farther than ever before, sending it soaring over Japan for the first time in five years and prompting a warning to residents there to take cover.

Ino said Tokyo would not tolerate the repeated actions by North Korea. The incident was the seventh such launch since Sept. 25.

Japan’s foreign ministry said the nuclear envoys of the United States, South Korea and Japan held a telephone call and shared the view that the North’s ballistic missile launches threatened the peace and security of the region and the international community, besides posing a civil aviation risk.

North Korea, which has pursued missile and nuclear tests in defiance of U.N. sanctions, said on Saturday its missile tests were for self-defence against direct U.S. military threats and had not harmed the safety of neighbours.

“Our missile tests are a normal, planned self-defence measure to protect our country’s security and regional peace from direct U.S. military threats,” said state media KCNA, citing an aviation administration spokesperson.

South Korea and the United States held joint maritime exercises on Friday, a day after Seoul scrambled fighter jets in reaction to an apparent North Korean bombing drill.

The United States also announced new sanctions on Friday in response to North Korea’s latest missile launches.

Topical Storm Gaston becomes seventh named cyclone of season in central Atlantic

Tropical Storm Gaston formed Tuesday in the central Atlantic, but unlike it counterparts Hurricane Fiona and a disturbance off the coast of South America, Gaston will continue to spin mostly over open waters.

Gaston was last reported to be about 1,000 miles away from the Azores Islands and due to anomalously warm water has the potential to strengthen into a strong tropical storm.

The National Hurricane Center estimated maximum sustained winds are around 40 mph with higher gusts and is moving northward.

The FOX Forecast Center expects the steering flow guiding Gaston to collapse over the next couple of days, leaving the tropical storm to meander over the North Atlantic.

Marine interests and residents in the Azores are encouraged to monitor the cyclone’s progress do to potential impacts.

The Azores are situated about 900 miles off the coast of Europe and nearly 3,900 miles from the U.S. East Coast.

Swells generated by the Tropical Storm are forecast to reach the Azores later this week. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip-current conditions.

Hilaria Baldwin expecting her SEVENTH child with Alec Baldwin

Hilaria Baldwin has revealed she is pregnant with her seventh child with husband Alec Baldwin, just months after the actor became embroiled in a devastating tragedy when he accidentally shot dead a crew member on the set of his movie Rust.

The 38-year-old shared the news on her Instagram on Tuesday, posting a video of herself and Alec, 63, playing with their six children after sharing their happy news with their brood.

The announcement comes just five months after Alec’s fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the Rust set, something that Hilaria alluded to in her Instagram caption, which referred to their unborn child as a ‘bright spot in their lives’.

‘After many ups and downs over the past few years, we have an exciting up and a huge surprise: another Baldwinito is coming this fall,’ Hilaria wrote.

Hilaria, who suffered two miscarriages before welcoming her fifth child, Edu, admitted that she didn’t think anymore children were in her future, explaining that the news of her latest pregnancy came as something of a ‘surprise’ for the family.

Surprise: Alec Baldwin and wife Hilaria have revealed they are expecting a seventh child together just five months after the actor’s fatal Rust shooting

The couple welcomed their fifth and sixth child just six months apart after using a surrogate to carry daughter Lucia

‘We were pretty sure our family was complete, and we’re beyond happy with this surprise,’ she continued, before saying of the video post: ‘I’m sharing with you the moment we told the kids – as you can see, they are super excited!’

The post, which Alec also shared on his own Instagram account, went on to reference the ‘uncertain times’ that the Baldwins have faced – including, no doubt, the ongoing investigation into the on-set death of Hutchins last year.

‘Our new baby is a very bright spot in our lives,’ Hilaria – who announced earlier this month that she was taking a break from social media – wrote.

Tragedy: The couple’s news comes five months after Alec accidentally shot dead cinematographer Halyna Hutchins (pictured) on the set of his movie Rust

‘A blessing and a gift during such uncertain times. I’ve missed you during my break from social media…I’m back and looking forward to continuing with you this wild journey that we call “life.” Our love to you and your loved ones.’

Hilaria and Alec already share six children together: daughters María Lucía Victoria, 13 months, and Carmen Gabriela, eight, and sons Rafael Thomas, six, Leonardo Ángel Charles, five, Romeo Alejandro David, three, and Eduardo “Edu” Pao Lucas, 18 months.

Alec also has a daughter Ireland Baldwin, 26, with ex wife Kim Basinger.

Last year, Hilaria and Alec shocked their fans by announcing the arrival of their sixth child, Lucía, via surrogate just six months after the yoga guru gave birth to her fifth baby Edu following two miscarriages.

She shared her devastating news in April 2019, when she took to social media to document her miscarriage in a series of very candid photos and videos, the first of which showed her posing in her underwear, alongside a caption which read: ‘I want to share with you that I am most likely experiencing a miscarriage.’

Hilaria went on to document subsequent doctors’ appointments, and even shared selfies from her D&C procedure.

In November of that same year, she revealed that she’d had a second miscarriage, four months into her pregnancy, once again sharing the news on Instagram alongside an image of herself and daughter Carmen.

Brushing off scandal: The news also comes after Hilaria’s Spanish heritage controversy

Big brood: Hilaria shared this video of her family celebrating the news on Tuesday

‘We are very sad to share that today we learned that our baby passed away at 4 months,’ she wrote. ‘We also want you to know that even though we are not ok right now, we will be. We are so lucky with our 4 healthy babies – and we will never lose sight of this.

This week, Alec was spotted getting back to work as an actor, with pictures showing him reading reading through two film scripts in Italy after the fatal Rust accident last October.

Sitting outside a bar in the Italian city, Alec looked disheveled as he ate alone while reading his annotated script.

The actor is said to have been in talks to work on two Italian films – Kid Santa and Billie’s Magic World – before the Rust incident took place.

Billed as ‘live-action/animation family Christmas comedies,’ the films are being produced by Alec and his brother Daniel Baldwin, who is also starring in them.

The actor was holding a Colt .45 while preparing for a scene at a ranch near Santa Fe, New Mexico, on October 21 when his gun went off, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounding the film’s director, Joel Souza.

Announcement: The 38-year-old shared the news to her Instagram on Tuesday, posting a video of herself and Alec, 63, playing with their six children

Working: Alec has been pictured this week preparing for a new movie, five months on from the death of Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer who was killed on the set of his film Rust

Alec said in a December interview with ABC News that he was pointing the gun at Hutchins at her instruction on the set of the Western when it went off without his pulling the trigger.

Charges haven’t yet been filed in the ongoing criminal investigation by the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office.

Matthew Hutchins, the widower of the cinematographer, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Baldwin and others in the film in February.

In an interview with NBC in February, Matthew said: ‘I was just so angry to see him talk about her death so publicly in such a detailed way and then to not accept any responsibility after having just described killing her.’

Matthew, a Harvard-educated lawyer, told Today in an interview that he felt the majority of the blame lay with Alec.

Alec, in the December interview, said: ‘Someone is responsible for what happened, and I can’t say who that is, but it’s not me.’

Matthew said: ‘The idea that the person holding the gun and causing it to discharge is not responsible is absurd to me.

‘But gun safety was not the only problem on that set. There were a number of industry standards that were not practiced and there’s multiple responsible parties,’ he added.

Meanwhile, Hilaria has been on and off social media since her husband’s Rust shooting scandal, and her own controversy for faking her Spanish heritage – which she apologized for last year.

Candid: Hilaria even documented her two miscarriages on social media, revealing in April 2019 that she ‘was most likely’ losing her unborn child while sharing an image of herself in lingerie

The influencer, whose real name is Hillary Hayward-Thomas, finally said ‘sorry’ for the saga in a post shared to her Instagram account on February 5 last year – six weeks after a Twitter thread about her faux European background went viral.

Hilaria stopped short of confessing she had misled people about her Spanish roots instead doubling down on her previous claims that she was raised ‘with two cultures, American and Spanish’ and that she feels ‘a true sense of belonging to both’.

In a caption alongside a photo of her with Alec and their five children, she wrote: ‘I’ve spent the last month listening, reflecting, and asking myself how I can learn and grow.

‘My parents raised my brother and me with two cultures, American and Spanish, and I feel a true sense of belonging to both.

‘The way I’ve spoken about myself and my deep connection to two cultures could have been better explained – I should have been more clear and I’m sorry.

‘I’m proud of the way I was raised, and we’re raising our children to share the same love and respect for both.

Brood: The couple already share six children together; daughters María Lucía Victoria, 13 months, and Carmen Gabriela, eight, and sons Rafael Thomas, six, Leonardo Ángel Charles, five, Romeo Alejandro David, three, and Eduardo “Edu” Pao Lucas, 18 months

At the end of December 2020, it emerged that Hilaria – who in the past claimed to have grown up in Majorca and spoke with a Spanish accent – actually spent her childhood in Beacon Hill, Boston, and went by Hillary.

It started with a single tweet on December 21 which read: ‘You have to admire Hilaria Baldwin’s commitment to her decade long grift where she impersonates a Spanish person’.

The woman then continued to post videos and proof of how Hilaria’s accent has changed over the years.

Several former classmates came forward to confirm that Hilaria was in fact raised in Weston, Massachusetts, by American parents without a hint of a foreign accent.

In the wake of the scandal, Hilaria took a break from social media and retreated to the Baldwins’ home in East Hampton, where she was staying with her children, while Alec was renting a nearby property so that he could quarantine away from his family and commute back and forth to the city for work.

Since apologizing for the scandal on social media, Hilaria has been sharing much more regular updates, frequently posting candid images and videos of life at home with Alec and the kids – however she made no hints that the couple were planning to welcome a sixth child into their brood.

Assessing Perseverance’s Seventh Sample Collection

On Wednesday, Dec. 29 (sol 306) Perseverance successfully cored and extracted a sample from a Mars rock. Data downlinked after the sampling indicates that coring of the rock the science team nicknamed Issole went smoothly. However, during the transfer of the bit that contains the sample into the rover’s bit carousel (which stores bits and passes tubes to the tube processing hardware inside the rover), our sensors indicated an anomaly. The rover did as it was designed to do – halting the caching procedure and calling home for further instructions.

This is only the 6th time in human history a sample has been cored from a rock on a planet other than Earth, so when we see something anomalous going on, we take it slow. Here is what we know so far, and what we are doing about it.

Imaging Perseverance’s Sample: This image shows the cored-rock sample remaining in the sample tube after the drill bit was extracted from Perseverance’s bit carousel on Jan. 7, 2022. Credits: NASA/JPL-Caltech. Download image ›

The anomaly occurred during “Coring Bit Dropoff.” It’s when the drill bit, with its sample tube and just-cored sample nestled inside, is guided out of the percussive drill (at the end of the robotic arm) and into the bit carousel (which is located on the rover’s chassis). During processing of previous cored rock samples, the coring bit travelled 5.15 inches (13.1 centimeters) before sensors began to record the kind of resistance (drag) expected at first contact with the carousel structure. However, this time around the sensor recorded higher resistance than usual at about 0.4 inches (1 centimeter) earlier than expected, and some much higher resistance than expected during the operation.

The team requested additional data and imagery to ensure proper understanding of the state post anomaly.  Because we are presently operating through a set of “restricted Sols” in which the latency of the data restricts the type of activities we can perform on Mars, it has taken about a week to receive the additional diagnostic data needed to understand this anomaly.

Armed with that data set, we sent up a command to extract the drill bit and sample-filled tube from the bit carousel and undock the robotic arm from the bit carousel. During these activities, a series of hardware images were acquired.

The extraction took place yesterday (1/6) and data was downlinked early this morning. These most recent downlinked images confirm that inside the bit carousel there are a few pieces of pebble-sized debris. The team is confident that these are fragments of the cored rock that fell out of the sample tube at the time of Coring Bit Dropoff, and that they prevented the bit from seating completely in the bit carousel.

The designers of the bit carousel did take into consideration the ability to continue to successfully operate with debris. However, this is the first time we are doing a debris removal and we want to take whatever time is necessary to ensure these pebbles exit in a controlled and orderly fashion. We are going to continue to evaluate our data sets over the weekend.

This is not the first curve Mars has thrown at us – just the latest. One thing we’ve found is that when the engineering challenge is hundreds of millions of miles away (Mars is currently 215 million miles from Earth), it pays to take your time and be thorough. We are going to do that here. So that when we do hit the un-paved Martian road again, Perseverance sample collection is also ready to roll.

Taylor Heinicke leaves game after seventh hit; Tyler Larsen carted off

Getty Images

Washington is having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

It trails the Cowboys 27-8, which, with a loss, will give Dallas breathing room in the NFC East. Washington had receiver Terry McLaurin leave in the third quarter for a concussion check, and he has not returned.

On the same play, with 12:30 left in the fourth quarter, Neville Gallimore took out both center Tyler Larsen and quarterback Taylor Heinicke.

Gallimore destroyed Larsen to sack Heinicke.

Larsen was carted off after grabbing at the back of his ankle. Heinicke limped off, with Kyle Allen replacing him.

Heinicke left for one play in the first half.

The Cowboys have sacked him four times.

The Cowboys lost left tackle Tyron Smith, who had his left ankle rolled by teammate Connor McGovern. He is questionable to return.
