Residents asked to conserve water as Jackson suffers setback at Curtis plant

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Customers can expect pressure fluctuation through the next 24 hours as the city of Jackson’s water system has experienced a setback at the O.B. Curtis Water Treatment Plant Saturday night.

Crews spent New Year’s Day working to get back on track.

“The water system was showing signs of recovery and had reached 80 PSI by the end of the day Saturday,” Interim Third-Party Manager Ted Henifin said in an email on Sunday. “The elevated tanks had started to fill for the first time since Christmas.”

However, he said “overnight process challenges” at Curtis, Jackson’s main treatment plant, stalled that process.

“As a result, the distribution system lost pressure and most of the gains reported,” he said. “Many customers who had water restored [on Saturday] have lost pressure again.”

Curtis is Jackson’s main water treatment facility, serving approximately 43,000 connections across the city, in Byram, and parts of Hinds County.

Problems occurred on the plant’s conventional treatment side. Details of the setback were under investigation. “It’s now running again,” Henifin said. “We don’t know what happened. We’re trying to figure it out.”

Areas impacted primarily include west, central, and south Jackson, as well as elevated areas in the capital city.

“Staff at O.B. Curtis are working diligently to fully recover the process and expect to make gains again late today,” Henifin wrote. “The current goal is to restore system pressure fully by Monday evening into early Tuesday morning.”

Pressure needs to be above 80 PSI, or pounds per square inch, to ensure all customers in the city have water. Pressure needs to be around 20 PSI at each connection before officials can begin testing to have boil water notices lifted.

As Jackson continues recovery efforts, the precautionary boil notice remains in place for much of the city, with the exception of those homes and businesses in the 39211 zip code.

“All customers with water are encouraged to conserve as much as possible to speed the recovery to those without water,” Henifin wrote.

NFL Week 15 grades: Patriots get a ‘D’ for shocking loss to Raiders; Cowboys earn a ‘C’ for surprising setback

After a wild Saturday that gave us the biggest comeback win in NFL history, the action on Sunday might have actually topped that.

In Las Vegas, the Raiders beat the Patriots with one of the wildest walk-off plays ever: Chandler Jones snared a lateral on the game’s final play and then proceeded to return it for a touchdown to give the Raiders an improbable 30-24 win over the Patriots.

In Tampa Bay, Tom Brady blew the biggest lead of his career in a home game. The Buccaneers led the Bengals 17-0 in the first half, before suffering a total second-half meltdown in a 34-23 loss.

In New York, the Lions won the game after being down to their final play. On a fourth-and-1 with under two minutes left to play, the Lions needed a first down to keep the game alive and instead, they did themselves one better: They got a 51-yard touchdown pass from Jared Goff to Brock Wright. The Lions have now taken one step closer to becoming just the second team in NFL history to make the playoffs after starting the season 1-6.

In Jacksonville, the Jaguars looked hopelessly out of the game when they were trailing the Cowboys 27-10 with just four minutes left in the third quarter, but they ended up rebounding to pull off a wild win in overtime. The victory over the Cowboys ended a 20-game losing streak to NFC teams for the Jags.

So what kind of grade do you get for blowing a 17-point lead to the Jaguars? Let’s get to the Week 15 grades and find out. If you want to know what kind of grades we handed out for Saturday’s games, including Minnesota’s historical 33-point comeback win, be sure to click here. Kherson: Russia will withdraw forces in Ukraine war setback

CNN
 —

Russia has ordered a retreat from the key southern city of Kherson, the only regional capital it has captured since February’s invasion, in a dramatic strategic setback for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In the face of Ukrainian advances in the region, Russian troops across the Kherson region will withdraw from the west bank of the Dnipro River, an area that includes Kherson city, Russian state media reported Wednesday.

The order came at a meeting in Moscow between Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and the commander of Russian forces in Ukraine, Gen. Sergei Surovikin, as Ukrainian forces approach the city from two directions.

The Russian withdrawal would represent the most significant military moment in the war since Ukrainian forces swept through the northern Kharkiv region in September.

Ukrainian officials have however remained skeptical that Russian forces had left the west bank altogether.

“Actions speak louder than words. We see no signs that Russia is leaving Kherson without a fight,” Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser in the Office of the President, tweeted.

Ukraine “is liberating territories based on intelligence data, not staged TV statements,” Podolyak added.

Defending occupied territory on the west bank of Kherson had become increasingly difficult for the Russians as Ukrainian forces disabled bridges across the Dnipro and attacked Russian supply lines.

Kherson was one of four Ukrainian regions illegally annexed by Russia in September. Once the withdrawal is complete, several thousand square kilometers of that annexed territory will have been surrendered.

The withdrawal “demonstrates the courage, the determination, the commitment of Ukrainian armed forces and also the importance of the continued support” of the West, NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Wednesday.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Surovikin said that “Kherson [city] and adjacent settlements in the current conditions cannot be fully supplied and function.”

Surovikin claimed that Ukrainian forces “are attacking schools, hospitals and civilians in Kherson, who are being evacuated to the other side of the Dnipro river.”

Surovikin, who had warned that difficult choices would be required when he was appointed overall commander of the operation, said: “The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation successfully resisted the attempts of the offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the direction of Kherson.”

He claimed that “from August to October, the Armed Forces of Ukraine lost more than 9,500 people in Kherson,” a number he said was seven to eight times more than Russian losses. It is impossible to verify Surovikin’s claim.

Meanwhile, Russian reporters in Kherson’s north have described withdrawals from some areas.

A prominent Russian Telegram channel, with more than one million subscribers, reported “there was a withdrawal to back up positions,” near the town of Snihurivka, on the west bank, which is in neighboring Mykolaiv region.

“A bridge was also blown up by our forces in this area today,” the channel, RVVoenkor, reported.

It added: “Ukrainian sources published a photo with the raising of their flag at the Snihurivka railway station. The settlement is under their control.”

CNN has geolocated the photograph of the flag on a tower in Snihurivka.

The channel also said that the Ukrainians had entered a nearby village (Kalynivske) and that “the front line is steadily moving towards Kherson.”

Another Russian military reporter, Alexander Kots, said on Telegram that after “receiving several urgent recommendations to cross to the east bank” from Kherson city, he decided to take two Russian flags on the departing ferry “so that those who would mock our state symbols would not get them.”

Kots added: “One was taken from the flagpole at the City Council…..I’ll keep the state flag until we come back. So I can hang it up again.”

Sean McVay on loss to Bills: We’re going to respond the right way to this setback

Getty Images

The Rams didn’t look like a Super Bowl team in Thursday night’s 31-10 loss to the Bills, but Rams head coach Sean McVay was not discouraged afterward.

McVay said repeatedly that he blames himself for not having his team better prepared, and that he is confident that Rams will play much better against the Falcons in Week Two.

“This isn’t the first setback we’ve experienced,” McVay said. “We’re going to respond the right way. I do trust that. All I know how to do is look at this film, correct it, put together a good week of preparation and be ready to go against the Falcons next week. There’s no way to put it other than, didn’t do a good enough job. It starts with me, and overall we can execute better in a lot of areas.”

McVay also said that the Bills provided a tough challenge for anyone.

“That’s gonna be a really, really good football team,” McVay said. “Tonight was a humbling night. . . . But my favorite part about sports is the opportunity to respond.”

Stroll’s ‘very fortunate’ Dutch GP engine setback

Aston Martin has changed Lance Stroll’s engine ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix following a problem that “fortunately” occurred at the end of qualifying.

Stroll was frustrated that his most competitive Saturday of the season so far ended without him having a chance to take part in Q3 because of a hydraulic problem.

He felt it would have been possible to qualify seventh or eighth, and saw that as a missed opportunity given that overtaking is so difficult at Zandvoort.

Aston Martin believes it understands the issue, but it has required a precautionary engine change ahead of the race.

For the grand prix here, Stroll has an older engine, turbocharger, MGU-H and MGU-K in his power unit package, and Aston Martin hopes to bring the new power unit back next week in Italy.

The indication is that while the setback was irritating at the time, it has ended up well-timed for Aston Martin.

Performance director Tom McCullough said: “It’s one of those ones that’s not too bad, but it’s unfortunately stopped Lance running in Q2.

“We’re very fortunate actually that the problem happened on the inlap of Q2.

“That could have happened on the lap to the grid, so then we’d have a different set of sad faces.

“Hopefully we’ve caught it in time. Hopefully we can rectify and hopefully the car runs fine today.”

Aston Martin’s form has been better on Sundays this season but the team has often been hamstrung by poor qualifying performance.

Sebastian Vettel was eliminated in Q1 at Zandvoort after going off when encountering dirt on the track at the penultimate corner but Stroll’s grid position gives the team chance to score for only the fifth time this season.

“We’ve been pushing really hard back at the factory, try to bring bits to the car, and this is maybe a good track for us,” said Stroll.

“It was the first strong quali we had in, I don’t know, five or six events, even more maybe.

“Then we’ve always had the pace on Sunday. But it was nice to see that we were in the position on Saturday that we are normally always on Sundays.

“I’ll try and get a good start, get a few places.”

Perez back to older engine

Stroll is not the only driver who has been forced to take on an older power unit for the Dutch GP, with Red Bull having to change components on Perez’s RB18.

Among the changes declared for Perez are previously-used ICE, TC, MGU-H, MGU-K and exhaust system, as well as the LHS and RHS rear drop link and the rearward plank section.

Perez will line up fifth on the grid following his spin at the end of Q3.
