World Cup 2022 highlights: Switzerland tops Serbia, 3-2, to advance

The group stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup came to a close Friday with Switzerland (2-0-1) outlasting Serbia (0-1-2) at Qatar’s Stadium 974— and there was no shortage of action in the Group G tilt.

Elsewhere, Cameroon (1-1-1) handed Brazil (2-0-1) its first loss of the tournament in the other Group G match.

Here are the top plays!

Switzerland 3, Serbia 2

1′: No time to waste

Switzerland didn’t waste any time setting the tone early in this one, making big moves in the opening minute.

20′: Goal!

Xherdan Shaqiri came up big for Switzerland in the first half, putting his team on the board early, 1-0, minutes after the first yellow card of the game was shown to teammate Silvan Widmer.

26′: Battling early

Serbia’s Aleksandar Mitrović came up with the equalizer on this smooth header following a fast break.

35′: New leader!

Serbia took a 2-1 lead late in the first half thanks to a smooth shot from forward Dušan Vlahović.

Meanwhile, Switzerland’s Rubén Vargas picked up a yellow card — the second of the match for the Swiss.

44′: Knotted up

Breel Embolo came up with the game-tying score for Switzerland just ahead of halftime.

48′: Second-half surge

Switzerland came out strong in the second half, as Remo Freuler knocked one in to give the Swiss a 3-2 edge. It marked the first time since 1994 that three different players scored for Switzerland in a World Cup match.

Meanwhile, Serbia’s Sergej Milinković-Savić was shown the third yellow card of the game — Serbia’s first.

65′: Chaos ensues

No penalty was called after Mitrović made contact with Switzerland’s Fabian Schar, infuriating Serbia’s bench so much so that it spilled out onto the field.

Serbian goalie Predrag Rajković was shown a yellow card in the dust-up — Serbia’s third of the match.

90’+5′: Fired up

Things continued to escalate in stoppage time. Three more yellow cards were dealt before things ended, 3-2.

Cameroon vs. Serbia, South Korea vs. Ghana, Brazil vs. Switzerland, Portugal vs. Uruguay

The second round of group stage games concludes on Monday as Groups G and H take to the field again. Brazil will be shorthanded for its game against Switzerland while Portugal and Uruguay meet in the game of the day at 2 p.m. ET.

South Korea vs. Ghana

8 a.m. ET Monday, FS1

South Korea would be in a great position entering its final game against Uruguay with a win over Ghana. The Ghanians’ loss to Portugal was a five-goal thriller and they’ll have to be much better at the back against a South Korea team led by Heung-Min Son. Under 2.5 goals is at -190, so we’ll take South Korea to scratch out a win.

Brazil vs. Switzerland

11 a.m. ET Monday, Fox

Brazil will be without Neymar and Danilo because of ankle injuries but this is one of the deepest teams in the tournament. Switzerland’s long odds are enticing given the upsets so far in this World Cup, but Brazil should take care of business. Under 2.5 goals at -115 is our play.

Portugal vs. Uruguay

2 p.m. ET Monday, Fox

Much like the U.S. on Friday, a draw isn’t the worst thing in the world for Uruguay, especially if South Korea loses to Ghana. But Uruguay would like to be sitting on four points after Monday’s games while Portugal can clinch advancement to the knockout rounds with a win. We’re going over 2.5 goals at +115.

Unless you’re a die-hard soccer fan you probably didn’t get up at 5 a.m. ET on Thanksgiving morning to watch Cameroon play Switzerland and you might have been watching the NFL instead of Brazil’s win over Serbia. We’re going with Serbia to win and set up a big game vs. Switzerland on the final day of group play.

Neymar injured, Richarlison scores for Brazil at World Cup

LUSAIL, Qatar (AP) — With Neymar limping off the field with an ankle injury, Richarlison came through for the “Seleção.”

A spectacular acrobatic kick followed an easy tap-in from close range as Richarlison scored both goals in Brazil’s 2-0 victory over Serbia on Thursday at the World Cup.

After the match, the Tottenham striker learned of the extent of Neymar’s injury.

“The most important thing for us it to have him at 100% for the next match,” said Richarlison, whose first goal came after a buildup started by Neymar. “When I get to the hotel I’m going to go and see how he is doing.”

Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar said Neymar sprained his right ankle. He declined to speculate on whether he would be available to play in the team’s next match against Switzerland on Monday.

“We put ice on it while he was on the bench and then in physiotherapy,” Lasmar said. “There is no test scheduled for now but we will schedule it if needed. He will be under observation. We will know more tomorrow.”

Neymar was also injured at the 2014 World Cup. Playing at home in Brazil, his tournament ended with a back injury in the quarterfinals against Colombia when he had to be taken off the field on a stretcher. Brazil ended up losing to Germany 7-1 in the semifinals.

Neymar was fouled nine times in the match against Serbia, four more than any other player so far at this year’s World Cup. But while taking care of Neymar, the opposing defense couldn’t stop Richarlison.

He had his back to the goal when he used one touch to get the ball up in the air near the penalty spot, then spun around and leapt off the ground before knocking the ball into the net with his right foot in the 73rd minute.

“My childhood dream has come true,” said Richarlison, who is playing in his first World Cup. “We knew it was going to be difficult to get past them. I’m used to playing against defensive teams like this in England. I wanted to take advantage of the opportunities that I had and I did.”

Brazil had struggled to get past the Serbian defense until Richarlison scored from close range in the 62nd. Vinícius Júnior assisted on both goals.

Neymar, seeking his first major title with Brazil, stayed at 75 goals for the national team, two shy of Pelé’s scoring record.

He was tackled hard a few times and sprained his right ankle in the second half. He was crying on the bench after being substituted in the 79th and was limping as he left the stadium.

Brazil coach Tite started with an attack-minded squad that included four forwards — Neymar, Vinícius Júnior, Raphinha and Richarlison. Attacking midfielder Lucas Paquetá played alongside Casemiro, the lone defensive midfielder.

But Serbia had several players back and was able to keep Brazil from creating many significant opportunities. Neymar tried to control the pace but struggled to get free. He, Vinícius Júnior and Raphinha all squandered chances early on.

Brazil’s best chance before Richarlison’s opening goal had been a low long-range shot by Alex Sandro that hit the post in the 60th. Neymar had his best opportunities with a free kick in the 50th and a shot from near the penalty spot in the 55th.

Serbia had its own injury issues for the match.

“We have three key players who are injured — it’s too much for us,” Serbia coach Dragan Stojković said. “We are not Brazil with 200 million people. We are a very small country.”

The 30-year-old Neymar arrived to his third World Cup as Brazil’s main attraction. He helped the “Seleção” win the 2013 Confederations Cup and its first Olympic gold medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, but has yet to win a major title with the national team.

Brazil, trying to win its first World Cup in two decades, is unbeaten in its last 20 opening games, with 17 victories. It has finished first in its group in the last 10 World Cups.

Brazil vs. Serbia Highlights | 2022 FIFA World Cup

A beautiful 2-0 finish over Serbia for Brazil: a win to remain unbeaten in their last TWENTY World Cup opening games.

Here are the top plays!

Brazil 2, Serbia 0

7′: Seeing yellow

Serbia picked up a yellow card early in this one, as Strahinja Pavlović got twisted up with Neymar.

13′: What could have been

Brazil was this close to taking the lead, but Neymar’s shot was narrowly batted away by Vanja Milinković-Savić.

Just like that, things remained scoreless through the first half.

45′: Nearly there

Once again, Brazil had a chance to take the lead, but its efforts came up just short as the second half got underway.

52′: Taking one for the team

Pavlović came up with a crucial tackle in the box for Serbia to keep Brazil from scoring. This came just minutes after teammate Nemanja Gudelj received a yellow card, Serbia’s second of the match, in the 49th minute.

59′: Off the post

Brazil kept knocking, and Alex Sandro nearly knocked one in. However, he came up short.

62′: Goal!

With momentum on Brazil’s side, Richarlison came up with the first goal of the match in the 62nd minute.

Richarlison scores to give Brazil a lead vs. Serbia

In Brazil’s World Cup opener, Richarlison scores to give Brazil a lead over Serbia.

73′: Goal of the tournament!

Richarlison, assisted by Vinícius Júnior, netted his second score of the day shortly after, putting Brazil up 2-0. Richarlison’s acrobatics brought Brazil fans to their feet.

80′: Injury alert

Antony replaced Neymar because of an injury around the 80-minute mark.

Meanwhile, Brazil continued to put pressure on Serbia, and things ended there.

PREGAME:

Setting the stage

Group G was back at the forefront Thursday, as the No. 1 team in the world took the field. Entering Thursday’s match, Brazil was 73-18-18 all-time in the World Cup and had more tournament appearances than any nation (22), including this year.

The Seleção have arguably the most talented roster in the tournament this year, headlined by Paris Saint-Germain superstar Neymar, who is one of FOX Bet’s favorites to win this year’s Golden Boot.

In the hunt

On the other side, Serbia entered Thursday’s match 18-20-8 all-time in the World Cup (including participation as Yugoslavia). It was the team’s 13th tournament appearance and second straight.

Switzerland vs. Cameroon, Uruguay vs. South Korea, Portugal vs. Ghana, Brazil vs. Serbia

The last remaining groups to play finally get their World Cup campaigns underway on Thanksgiving as Brazil and Portugal make their first World Cup 2022 appearances.

The World Cup favorites are the clear top choice to win Group G while Portugal is the favorite in Group H. While you’re likely to be spending more time with family and watching NFL football on Thursday than you are watching the World Cup, there are still four games to get some action on. Here’s what you need to know.

Portugal vs. Ghana

11 a.m. ET, Fox

How does the tumult at Manchester United affect the Portugal squad? Captain Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes are no longer club teammates after Ronaldo’s contract was terminated on Tuesday. Ronaldo is set to be the team’s starting striker on Thursday, though it’s fair to wonder if Portugal would have an even better chance to win the World Cup if he was on the bench.

Brazil vs. Serbia

2 p.m. ET, Fox

Serbia isn’t a massive underdog to the World Cup favorites because of the talent on the roster. Aleksander Mitrovic and Dusan Vlahovic are a strong striker pairing and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is a player that’s been long coveted by top clubs. We’ll still take the Brazilians to win this one but our preferred bet is to take under 2.5 goals at +100.

Switzerland vs. Cameroon

5 a.m. ET Thursday, FS1

Switzerland finished third in its Group in Euro 2020 but advanced to the quarterfinals and lost there to Spain on penalties after knocking out France on penalties in the Round of 16. The confidence from that Euro 2020 run should be a huge boost and we’ll take Switzerland straight up in this one at just -130.

Uruguay vs. South Korea

8 a.m. ET, FS1

This is the game projected to be the lowest-scoring. Uruguay still has Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez on the roster, though Darwin Nunes is primed to take over as the leader of the front line. Tottenham’s Heung Min Son is capable of taking a game over himself, especially if he can find space on the counter.

Mali’s Kourouma, Dabou fight following loss to Serbia

Two members of Mali’s women’s basketball team duked it out Monday following their latest loss in what has so far been a winless appearance in the women’s World Cup.

The brief, caught-on-camera scuffle took place in the postgame media area after the team was defeated 81-68 by Serbia, video posted online and social media shows.

One player even attempted to connect on a few haymakers before other teammates rushed in to break up the ugly situation, according to the footage that was captured by Serbian media during a player interview.

FIBA, the international basketball governing body, has opened an investigation into the incident between ballers Salimatou Kourouma and Kamite Elisabeth Dabou.

The scuffle occurred in the postgame media area after Mali’s loss.
YouTube | Sport Klub

Both players are averaging less than 10 points per game as the woeful Mali team has lost each of their four games by an average of 30 points.

Earlier in the tourney, Mali lost by an astounding 60 points to Australia.

FIBA has opened an investigation into the fight.
YouTube | Sport Klub

The African country originally didn’t even have the opportunity to compete on the world stage, but was a late entry to replace Nigeria, which had administrative issues.

Mali wraps up their tournament Tuesday against Canada.

If they win it would be the first World Cup victory for the country since 2010 when the team went 1-4.

Serbia police clash with right-wing protesters at LGBTQ march

BELGRADE, Sept 17 (Reuters) – Police clashed with right-wing protesters on Saturday as several thousand people joined an LGBTQ march in Serbia to mark the end of EuroPride week, an event staged in a different European city each year.

Police clashed with two right-wing groups trying to disrupt the march, Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said, adding that 10 police officers were slightly injured, five police cars damaged and 64 protesters arrested.

“I am very proud that we managed to avoid more serious incidents,” Brnabic, who herself is Serbia’s first gay prime minister, told reporters.

Following protests by nationalists and religious groups, the government had banned the march last week. But faced with calls by European Union officials and human rights activists, it allowed a shortened route for the march.

Those participating walked several hundred metres to the Tsmajdan stadium where a concert took place.

The United States’ ambassador to Serbia, Christopher Hill, and the European parliament’s special rapporteur for Serbia, Vladimir Bilcik, joined the march.

Previous Serbian governments have banned Pride parades, drawing criticism from human rights groups and others. Some Pride marches in the early 2000s met with fierce opposition and were marred by violence.

But recent Pride marches in Serbia have passed off peacefully, a change cited by EuroPride organisers as one reason Belgrade was chosen as this year’s host. Copenhagen was the host in 2021.

Serbia is a candidate to join the EU, but it must first meet demands to improve the rule of law and its record on human and minority rights.
