Minnesota’s COVID-19 update for Wednesday, September 8

Due to the Labor Day holiday, data from Sept. 4-7 is included in today’s update. The numbers will be higher than usual because of the reporting lag.

Wednesday’s COVID-19 update from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) includes 5,777 new cases and 9 newly reported deaths, including three people in their 40s from Becker, Otter Tail and Ramsey counties. Seven of the nine deaths happened in August, with two occurring in September.

The state’s death toll is 7,865 since the start of the pandemic. Of the total deaths, 58.0% (4,555) were residents of long-term care.

As of Sept. 6, the state reported that 3,342,677 people have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 3,149,597 people have completed the vaccine series. The percentage of Minnesota’s population with at least one shot, based on age group:

  • 12-15: 52%
  • 16-17: 58%
  • 18-49: 62%
  • 50-64: 74%
  • 65+: 92%
  • Total population: 60%

56.6% of Minnesota’s total population, including children under the age of 12 who are not eligible for the vaccine, has completed the vaccine series. That jumps to 67.0% when excluding kids under the age of 12. MDH has a public dashboard to track vaccine progress in Minnesota, and you can view it here.

Hospitalizations

Through Sept. 7, the number of people with COVID-19 hospitalized in Minnesota was 654 (up from 615 reported Tuesday).

Of those hospitalized, 174 people are in intensive care and 480 were in general hospital care. The spring surge saw a high of 202 patients in intensive care and 517 people in general hospital care.

Here’s how many people are hospitalized based on regional location, though this doesn’t mean that each patient contracted the virus in these specific regions, as they may have been diverted depending upon available staffed beds.

  • Metro: 93 ICU, 260 non-ICU
  • Central: 28 ICU, 56 non-ICU
  • Southeast: 24 ICU, 66 non-ICU
  • Northeast: 13 ICU, 28 non-ICU
  • Northwest: 5 ICU, 14 non-ICU
  • South-central: 5 ICU, 36 non-ICU
  • Southwest: 2 ICU, 13 non-ICU
  • West-central: 4 ICU, 7 non-ICU

Testing and positivity rates.

The 5,777 positive results in Wednesday’s update were from 81,167 completed tests, creating a test positivity rate of 7.11%.

According to Johns Hopkins University, Minnesota’s test positivity rate over the past seven days is 6.56%.

The World Health Organization recommends that a percent positive rate (total positives divided by total completed tests) of below 5% for at least two weeks is necessary to safely keep the economy open.

Coronavirus in Minnesota by the numbers

  • Total tests: 11,684,659 (up from 11,603,529)
  • People tested: 5,199,753 (up from 5,152,429)
  • People with at least 1 vaccine shot: 3,149,597 (up from 3,332,860)
  • People who have completed vaccine series: 3,134,652 (up from 3,134,652)
  • Positive cases: 663,248 (up from 657,492)
  • Deaths: 7,865 – 433 of which are “probable*” (up from 7,856)
  • Patients no longer requiring isolation: 642,434 (up from 635,784)

* Probable deaths are patients who died after testing positive using the COVID-19 antigen test, which is thought to be less accurate than the more common PCR test.

Correction may strike stocks after record September: Tom Lee

Longtime market bull Tom Lee is predicting a profitable period for investors in September.

According to Lee, the S&P 500 is positioned to surge more than 100 points this month. However, he warns the positive momentum has an expiration date.

“We could have a really strong rally in September,” the Fundstrat Global Advisors’ co-founder and head of research told CNBC’s “Trading Nation” on Friday. “We didn’t think there was a window for a 10% correction for most of 2021. The window where we think you could start to have potentially a 10% pullback is October.”

Lee attributes the vulnerability to growing fiscal and monetary policy risks — as well as uncertainty surrounding the pandemic and flu season.

“We get that much closer to tapering,” the CNBC contributor said. “That’s really when the debt ceiling rhetoric comes back, and if there are going to be concerns about the debt ceiling, the bond market could panic.”

When there’s upheaval in the bond market, it typically spills to stocks. But in the meantime, Lee indicates he would be a buyer.

He sees uncertainty regarding Covid-19 delta cases and its economic impact pushing the Federal Reserve to stay dovish for longer. According to Lee, it’s a recipe for new market highs.

“The U.S. is still in an underlying expansion. This is a risk on formula,” said Lee, who ran equity strategy for JPMorgan Chase from 2007 until 2014.

He cites a crude oil price comeback and bitcoin’s return above $50,000 as evidence.

Lee’s top market picks still involve trades most tied to the economic recovery. He particularly likes energy, and materials. He also sees opportunities in FAANG stocks, otherwise known as Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Alphabet.

“My guess is that quite a number of investors thought we’d have a 10% correction in August,” Lee said. “So, money was taken off the table. Usually when people re-risk they start buying cyclical and epicenter ideas.”

Lee believes the S&P 500 could exceed 4,650 in September — 50 points above his year-end target. On Friday, the index closed at 4,535.43 and is about a quarter of a percent below its record high.

Disclosure: Tom Lee owns bitcoin.

Hackaday Links: September 5, 2021

Good news from Jezero crater as the Mars rover Perseverance manages to accomplish for the first time what it was sent to do: collect and cache core samples from rocks. Space buffs will no doubt recall that Perseverance’s first attempt at core sampling didn’t go as planned — the rock that planetary scientists selected ended up being too soft, and the percussive coring bit just turned the core sample into powder. The latest attempt went exactly as planned: the cylindrical coring bit made a perfect cut, the core slipped into the sample tube nested inside the coring bit, and the core broke off cleanly inside the sample tube when it was cammed off-axis. Operators were able to provide visible proof that the core sample was retained this time using the Mastcam-Z instrument, which clearly shows the core in the sample tube. What’s neat is that they then performed a “percuss to ingest” maneuver, where the coring bit and sample tube are vibrated briefly, so that the core sample and any dust grains left around the sealing rim slide down into the sample tube. The next step is to transfer the sample tube to the belly of the rover where it’ll be hermetically sealed after some basic analysis.

Did any Android users perhaps oversleep this week? If you did, you’re not alone — lots of users of the Google Clock app reported that their preset alarms didn’t go off. Whether it was an actual issue caused by an update or some kind of glitch is unclear, but it clearly didn’t affect everyone; my phone mercilessly reminded me when 6:00 AM came around every day last week. But it apparently tripped up some users, to the point where one reported losing his job because of being late for work. Not to be judgmental, but it seems to me that if your job is so sensitive to you being late, it might make sense to have a backup alarm clock of some sort. We all seem to be a little too trusting that our phones are going to “just work,” and when they don’t, we’re surprised and appalled.

There seem to be two kinds of people in the world — those who hate roller coasters, and those who love them. I’m firmly in the latter camp, and will gladly give any coaster, no matter how extreme, a try. There have been a few that I later regretted, of course, but by and large, the feeling of being right on the edge of bodily harm is pretty cool. Crossing over the edge, though, is far less enjoyable, as the owners of an extreme coaster in Japan are learning. The Dodon-pa coaster at the Fuji-Q Highland amusement park is capable of hitting 112 miles (180 km) per hour and has racked up a sizable collection of injuries over the last ten months, including cervical and thoracic spine fractures. The ride is currently closed for a safety overhaul; one has to wonder what they’re doing to assess what the problem areas of the ride are. Perhaps they’re sending crash test dummies on endless rides to gather data, a sight we’d like to see.

And finally, you may have thought that phone phreaking was a thing of the past; in a lot of ways, you’d be right. But there’s still a lot to be learned about how POTS networks were put together, and this phone switch identification guide should be a big help to any phone geeks out there. Be ready to roll old school here — nothing but a plain text file that describes how to probe the switch that a phone is connected just by listening to things like dial tones and ring sounds. What’s nice is that it describes why the switches sound the way they do, so you get a lot of juicy technical insights into how switches work.

Dreading September? Bitcoin price hopes to break the slump trend

Bitcoin (BTC) has been struggling to break the $50,000 mark for over 10 days now. However, on Sept. 2, the premium cryptocurrency briefly surpassed the milestone, sending positive ripples across the market. Since then, the token has dropped below the mark to trade in the $49,000 range before rebounding to hit the $50,000 mark yet again on Sept. 3.

As Bitcoin often behaves in a cyclical pattern, a look at the monthly trends for September could reveal patterns in the price, which in turn could be helpful to gauge the outlook for the upcoming month. Historically, September has been one of the more lackluster months for BTC. A look at the monthly price data since 2013 reveals that the token has posted positive gains in September twice in eight years — in 2015 and 2016 — with a maximum of 6%, which could be considered to be almost flat.

Pete Humiston, manager of Kraken Intelligence — the research department of the Kraken exchange — told Cointelegraph about what this trend could mean for this year:

“September is historically Bitcoin’s worst-performing month. That said, it has been verging on $50,000 for the past three weeks or so now. Should Bitcoin stage a breakout above this psychologically significant milestone, it could renew investor interest and spark the momentum needed to carry it all the way back to $60,000.”

In fact, BTC has posted red in September in four of the last five years, making it the bleakest period for the coin. However, the $50,000 mark is considered to be one of the significant resistance levels for this asset ever since it broke the barrier just days after Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk announced that the company had bought BTC worth $1.5 billion on Feb. 8, along with starting to accept Bitcoin as a payment method. The token briefly going past this resistance level at the onset of this month could be a positive sign for the asset.

Cointelegraph discussed the current scenario with Hunain Naseer, senior analyst at OKEx Insights — the research team at cryptocurrency exchange OKEx. He said, “As things stand today, BTC’s struggle under $50,000 is the big fight bulls need to win before we can look at $60,000. The move from $50K to $60K is likely to be much faster than the current move between $40K to $50K.”

S2F model sees lesser deflection

Twitter user PlanB’s stock-to-flow (S2F) model has been one of the most accurate quantitative models that attempt to evaluate and forecast the price of Bitcoin. It does this based on the supply injections of the asset into circulation in a certain period. According to the model, the price of Bitcoin is supposed to have gone past $100,000 to exchange hands around the $105,000 mark.

However, BTC is currently recovering from a larger deflection from S2F at the end of July when it seemed like the model could be invalidated. This is not the first time that the price of Bitcoin negatively deviated from the model. The deviation began at the end of October 2018 and lasted until mid-June 2019 for a duration of nearly seven months. In comparison, the current ongoing negative variation has lasted only about three months. It is noteworthy here that for the rest of the year, the S2F model is considerably flat and forecasts a similar range at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

Naseer further discussed the model’s forecasts in comparison to the market price, saying, “Given the current sentiment and long-term fundamentals, it is not out of the question for BTC to hit $100K by December, especially since October and November have historically been big months for Bitcoin. They could easily set it up to touch $100K by mid-December before any corrections.”

Concerning this model, Jake Wujastyk, chief market analyst at TrendSpider, a technical analysis software company, told Cointelegraph, “Based on using the measured move from the March 2020 low to the October 2020 candle (seven months), applying this measured move to the June 2021 low would put this right around $100,000 by the end of the year, assuming the move is the same.”

Related: Mass appeal: Could a Bitcoin futures EFT electrify US investors?

Even though the S2F model has been highly accurate in forecasting the price of Bitcoin until now, it is important to note that all technical indicators have their limitations. Humiston spoke more on the broader perspective of the cryptocurrency market, saying, “A move to $100,000 in four months would require a significant inflow of capital. While certainly not impossible, it seems improbable now that investors’ attention has turned to alternative crypto assets such as Ether, Cardano and Solana.”

Altcoin boom may prevent $100K BTC this year

While Bitcoin has been slowly creeping towards the $50,000 mark and, in fact, struggling to hold it currently, altcoins like Ether (ETH), Cardano (ADA) and Solana (SOL) have been on an absolute tear in the last few weeks.

According to data from CoinMarketCap, in the previous seven days at the time of writing, BTC has posted 6.40%. In comparison, altcoins have dwarfed these numbers, with SOL posting 73.83%, ETH posting 26.57% and ADA posting 15.97% in the same duration. SOL and ADA have recently posted new all-time highs as well in September.

This altcoin boom has put the Bitcoin Dominance (BTCD) Index down to 41.46% at the time of writing, according to data from TradingView.com. This is similar to the levels it had reached back in June 2018. The CEO of crypto exchange KuCoi, Johnny Lyu, told Cointelegraph:

“It is important to understand how ETH and other altcoins are able to compete with BTC for the money of new investors and how those who have been on the market for a long time can behave[…] Crypto mass adoption cannot be achieved without the prosperity of altcoins. Many market participants believe that at the current price level, it is the value of altcoins that is more prone to a multiple increase.”

The price of Solana, for example, has grown more than 100 times since the beginning of the year. Even PlanB’s optimistic S2F model for BTC forecasts its value to be just over $100,000 by the end of the year, only three times the token’s value at the beginning of the year. Such vast differences in returns could even push investors to choose altcoins as their investment vehicle over Bitcoin.

However, the institutional interest in Bitcoin is seeing an upwind as compared with the levels seen in June and July. Microstrategy made yet another purchase of BTC on Aug. 24, this time worth $177 million. This amounts to a total of 105,085 BTC, valued at $5.2 billion currently and is 0.5% of the maximum supply of 21 million BTC.

Even one of the most prominent financial institutions globally, Citigroup Inc., is considering trading Bitcoin futures offered by the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the largest derivatives exchange in the world. According to the recent report, the banking firm is waiting for regulatory approval to trade in this derivatives instrument.

Lyu further talked about how the growth of the cryptocurrency market as a whole is renewing institutional interest in the industry, stating, “The gradual recovery of institutional interest in cryptocurrency is already obvious. Positive news about SpaceX’s investments in Bitcoin, the network upgrades of Ethereum in August and Cardano in September — all of this neutralizes the bear market of May and June and strengthens the confidence of market participants in further growth.”

Wujastyk also suggested that the price movements that Bitcoin has made over the last few months require the injection of large amounts of capital to move the market, which indicates that institutional capital is definitely involved. This market momentum that currently exists for both Bitcoin and altcoins could be the differentiating factor leading to a historically dreaded month for the cryptocurrency market.

Biden orders review and potential release of classified documents related to September 11 attacks

(CNN) President Joe Biden on Friday signed an executive order directing the Department of Justice and other federal agencies to conduct a declassification review of documents related to the FBI’s investigation of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The review could result in the release of new documents, should the agencies find some that can be declassified.

“The executive order requires the Attorney General to release the declassified documents publicly over the next six months,” Biden wrote in a statement. “My heart continues to be with the 9/11 families who are suffering, and my Administration will continue to engage respectfully with members of this community. I welcome their voices and insight as we chart a way forward.”

The move comes about a month after more than 1,600 people affected by the September 11 attacks released a letter calling on Biden to refrain from going to Ground Zero in New York City to mark the anniversary of the event unless he releases additional documents and information the government has previously blocked. Not long after that letter, the Department of Justice announced that it would review what previously withheld information or documents related to the September 11, 2001, attacks it can disclose to the public.

A Justice Department spokesperson said in August that the government advised a Manhattan federal court that the FBI had recently closed an investigation related to certain September 11 hijackers.

“Although this development followed the U.S. District Court rulings upholding the government’s privilege assertions, the FBI has decided to review its prior privilege assertions to identify additional information appropriate for disclosure. The FBI will disclose such information on a rolling basis as expeditiously as possible,” the spokesperson said.

Biden praised the DOJ’s decision at the time, saying it followed through on his campaign promise to have the department work on releasing 9/11 records.

“As I promised during my campaign, my Administration is committed to ensuring the maximum degree of transparency under the law, and to adhering to the rigorous guidance issued during the Obama-Biden Administration on the invocation of the state secrets privilege,” Biden said in an August statement.

He added that the Department of Justice filing “commits to conducting a fresh review of documents where the government has previously asserted privileges, and to doing so as quickly as possible.”

The President also last month reiterated his commitment to the families of victims from the September 11 attacks, but Brett Eagleson, who lost his father that day and is an advocate for many families of the victims killed in the attacks, criticized the Justice Department’s move, saying it did not go far enough toward full transparency.

“The DOJ/FBI have already had three years to ‘review’ the files and can act immediately to produce the documents including the unredacted 2016 FBI Review Report of the bureau’s years-long investigation of Saudi government agents who ‘are known to have provided substantial assistance to’ the hijackers, as well as phone records and witness statements,” Eagleson said.

Eagleson at the time urged the Biden administration to disclose the information pertaining to the FBI’s investigation.

“The DOJ finally admitted that its investigation is actually closed, contrary to the bureau’s prior claims about investigative status. We hope the Biden administration comes forward now to provide the information the 9/11 community has waited to receive for 20 years, so we can stand together with the President at Ground Zero on 9/11,” he said.

Tesla now aims for Full Self-Driving Beta public release ~September 25th (U)

Update: Sept 2: In a series of new Tweets, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has pinpointed the target delivery date of the “FSD opt-in Button” to on or around September 25th, details below.

Elon Musk is now saying that Tesla is aiming for the wider public release of its Full Self-Driving Beta in about four weeks.

We are coming up on almost a year since Tesla started testing its Full Self-Driving Beta in its early access program with some customers.

The software enables Tesla vehicles to virtually drive themselves both on highways and city streets, but it is still considered a level 2 driver assist since it requires driver supervision at all times. The driver remains responsible for the vehicle, needs to keep their hands on the steering wheel, and be ready to take control.

CEO Elon Musk has been promising a wider release of the Full Self-Driving Beta software to customers who purchased the FSD package, but the release has been delayed for a while.

More recently, the CEO has linked the wider release to Tesla pushing a new FSD Beta version 10 update, which has been expected after two more “point releases” in the coming weeks.

In a new comment on Twitter today, Musk says that the plan has apparently changed and Tesla now aims to push FSD Beta v10 to the early access fleet next week.

After that release, the CEO is expected for it to get tested for about four weeks before the wider release:

“We should be there with Beta 10, which goes out a week from Friday (no point release this week). It will have a completely retrained NN, so will need another few weeks after that for tuning & bug fixes. Best guess is a public beta button in ~4 weeks.”

The wider release is expected to take the form of a download button for people who purchased the FSD package to decide whether or not to download the FSD Beta software.

Tesla recently pushed a new version 9.2 of FSD Beta, which Musk wasn’t impressed with, but he has been personally testing v9.3 and liked the new version.

Now it sounds like v9.3 will become v10, and will get pushed to the early access fleet for testing before a wider release.

Electrek‘s take

Well, it’s an Elon timeline, and he says that it is his “best guess.” And we know how good those are when it comes to FSD timelines.

Also, you should keep in mind that this is only for the US market.

Other markets are not expected to get the download button, even if you purchased the FSD package as Tesla needs to adapt the system to the specificities of the road in other countries.

Update September 1: Musk today updated his timeline with a more dialed in date. On Friday September 10th, Tesla is expected to roll out Beta 10. “Looks promising that Beta 10.1, about 2 weeks later, will be good enough for public opt in request button”

Upcoming Nintendo Switch Games And Accessories For September And October 2021

Image: Nintendo

Well, we’ve made it through the quieter middle months of the year and we’re now on the downhill slope speeding towards Holiday 2021 and the busiest time of the video gaming calendar. Switch owners have plenty to look forward to over the coming months — things are starting to heat up, with the return of a fan-favourite franchise and new hardware launching ON THE SAME DAY.

Below we’ve listed some of the upcoming highlights of big Switch games scheduled for September and October. Beneath these physical releases you’ll also find a selection of other games releasing from September — usually physical versions of previously digital-only Switch eShop games — plus a selection of Switch accessories and related peripherals available in the coming months.

Enjoy!

A remaster of the Wii-exclusive Sonic Colo(u)rs, SEGA’s 30th anniversary tie-in Sonic Colo(u)rs: Ultimate brings what is arguably one of the finest 3D Sonic games ever to Switch. We spent some hands-on time with a version of the game, and you can check out our thoughts so far in Alex’s video, but we’re definitely excited to see one of the hedgehog’s best games get a second chance on Switch.

Mario’s greedy nemesis Wario is finally bringing his brand of micro-game mayhem to Switch in the form of WarioWare: Get It Together!, the long-awaited Switch entry in the series that now includes a simultaneous 2-player mode and the ability to play not only as the titular villain, but also his friends. We bagsy 9-Volt!

It’s been too long since we indulged in some manic micro-games, so we can’t wait to play this on 10th September.

NBA 2K22 – 10th September

We’ve been big fans of 2K’s basketball output on Switch, and although it has been confirmed that NBA 2K22 on Switch will be lumped in with other previous gen consoles and won’t have several features available in the PS5 and Xbox Series S/X releases, we’re still interested to see the next iteration of this premier b-ball series.

This sequel originally came to PS4 back in 2018, and we’ve been hoping this might find its way to Switch ever since the port of Wrath of the White Witch. Set 100 years since the events of that game, it was announced for Switch in May in both physical and digital forms.

Ni No Kuni II features a similar Ghibli-esque art style that caught everyone’s attention back in 2011, and the Switch version — dubbed the Prince’s Edition and out on 17th September — also contains The Tale of a Timeless Tome, The Lair of the Lost Lord and The Adventure Pack DLC.

Bringing content and courses from the first three Super Monkey Ball games to Switch, Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania got many a super simian enthusiast excited when it was officially announced at E3 2021. It’s landing on Switch on soon, so there’ll definitely be plenty to keep ball-rolling fans busy once the tenth month of the year rolls round…

Metroid Dread, the fifth installment in the 2D Metroid franchise is coming a whopping 19 years after Metroid Fusion on the Game Boy Advance, but from what we’ve seen so far it’s going to be worth the wait and then some. With a Special Edition and two new amiibo launching alongside the new game — a joint development between Nintendo and Metroid: Samus Returns developer MercurySteam. — 8th October is shaping up to be red letter day for fans of the galaxy’s greatest bounty hunter.

Oh, and there’s the Switch OLED Model launching that day, too. Featuring a lovely (and larger) OLED screen compared to the other two Switch models, it also has double the internal memory, a wider and sturdier kickstand, ‘improved’ audio of some sort and a a fetching new dock (with a LAN slot) that will make the Switch OLED the premium model — especially for handheld players.

Previously a Wii U exclusive in the Fatal Frame franchise (known as Project Zero in Europe), Koei Tecmo’s Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water was one of the few titles that actually made use of Wii U’s central asymmetrical gimmick. That coupled with a lukewarm critical reception made a Switch port seem unlikely — we gave it a 2/10 likelihood of a Switch port in our round-up of the Wii U games not yet on Switch.

The franchise has a devoted and loyal fan base, though, and Koei Tecmo has made the decision to rework the Gamepad elements and bring the game not only to Switch, but other platforms, too. A very welcome surprise!

And finally, just in time for Halloween, we’ve got Mario Party Superstars arriving at the very end of October.

Updating five boards and 100 minigames from the first three Mario Party games on Nintendo 64, Mario Party Superstars is the second entry in the series to grace Switch following Super Mario Party. While some might call that overkill, these are incredibly popular party games and the mini-games and gentle competition they contain make it hard not to have fun when it’s Mario Party time.

More Awesome Nintendo Switch Games

Aside from the highlighted games above, there are lots more Switch retail games which might take your fancy in September and beyond.

Awesome Accessories For Your Switch

And finally here are a selection of the finest Switch accessories coming up in September and beyond, for your consideration.

So that’s it for September and October — did we miss anything? Let us know with a comment and also tell us if you’ve pre-ordered any of these goodies!
