Sources: Wounded teen was the gunman in SEPTA Broad Street Line shooting that killed 21-year-old

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Sources tell Action News the teenager wounded during a fatal shooting on a SEPTA subway on Monday afternoon was the one who fired the shots that killed a 21-year-old man.

Philadelphia police had been searching for the gunman who shot the man multiple times on the Broad Street Line train around 2:40 p.m. in the city’s Francisville section.

The victim was taken to Temple University Hospital where he died a short time later.

Police said a 16-year-old male was shot in the arm during the incident. He was originally reported to be an innocent bystander, however, sources tell Action News that is not the case.

According to sources, the teenager got onto the subway at the Susquehanna Avenue stop and tried to rob the 21-year-old man.

Sources say a struggle ensued and the teenager shot the victim multiple times. Philadelphia police called the shooting a “targeted attack.”

Fourteen fire cartridge casings were found at the scene. Earlier reports said the victim was shot 11 times, but sources say it may have been closer to six.

The victim, who had a permit to carry, was also armed and shot the teenager in the arm.

There were at least a dozen passengers aboard the train car, but no other injuries were reported.

Sources say the 16-year-old later showed up at the hospital but told police he was shot on a basketball court. He denied being shot on the subway at Broad Street and Fairmount Avenue.

That all changed though when his mother arrived at the hospital, sources say.

The mother allegedly knew her son was lying and he eventually confessed to the shooting.

Sources say he told police where he hid the gun.

The teen was released from the hospital and remains in custody.

Action News is told the 16-year-old has two prior arrests for theft.

There is no word on charges.

Philadelphia Homicide: Father of 7, a SEPTA manager, killed in Germantown ambush shooting, police say

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A father of seven is dead after a gunman ambushed him outside his home in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, police say.

The 37-year-old SEPTA manager was leaving his house on the 100 block of Washington Lane, near McCallum Street, just before 1 a.m. when the shooting occurred.

Witnesses told police a black sedan was parked outside.

Police say the suspect waited for the victim to exit his home, then got out of the sedan and began shooting.

At least 15 shots were fired and then the suspect fled in the sedan, police say.

“Witness statements indicate that the rate of volume of fire from the handgun was in such a rapid succession that it sounded like a machinegun. That brings us a concern that the weapon may have been modified,” Philadelphia Police Captain Anthony Ginaldi said.

The victim fell onto his front lawn and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say family members including the victim’s brother and sister arrived at the scene.

“You can actually hear one of the family members crying,” Ginaldi said as he spoke with Action News not far from the victim’s home.

Detectives are searching through surveillance video to help find the suspect, including Ring home security footage.

SEPTA Rape Investigation: Police investigating sexual assault at Snyder Avenue station in South Philly

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Philadelphia police are searching for the suspect who they say raped a woman while pointing a gun at her boyfriend in a SEPTA station in South Philadelphia.

It happened around 4:30 a.m. Monday at the platform of the Snyder station on the 2100 block of Broad Street.

The 40-year-old female victim told police she was with a 46-year-old boyfriend at the platform when they were approached by the suspect who was armed with a gun.

Police say the suspect held the gun at the victim’s back and then pointed it at the boyfriend. He then proceeded to sexually assault the victim.

Police say video shows the boyfriend holding up his hands while the assault was taking place.

After the incident, police say the suspect rode off on a bicycle.

The couple then called 911.

Police released surveillance images of the rape suspect which show him wearing a grey NASA sweatshirt.

The suspect is described as a Black male, in his mid-20s, 5’6″, 160 pounds with light brown or hazel eyes. He was also seen wearing black pants, white sneakers and a medical mask.

Police say he was armed with a black handgun with a green slide and an extended magazine.

The victim told police she had been trying on clothes with her boyfriend at the station before the sex assault. Philadelphia police were not sure if the station was opened at the time.

According to police, the suspect and the boyfriend had a brief encounter, along the lines of a short conversation of “hey, what’s up,” moments before the assault.

Police say the suspect had left the area before returning to the couple and then pulling out his gun.

Anyone with information on the suspect is asked to contact the Special Victims Unit at 215-685-3251/3252.

In April, a suspect was arrested for raping a woman on the Broad Street Line between the Erie and Girard Avenue stations.

SEPTA released the following statement to Action News on safety and security:

“SEPTA knows that riders have concerns about safety and security on the system, and we are addressing them. We are working to increase the visibility of police officers on the system and are actively recruiting new candidates to the SEPTA Transit Police Department. Last month, SEPTA reached an agreement with the Fraternal Order of Transit Police on salary increases that will help with efforts to recruit and retain talented officers.

“In addition to traditional policing, SEPTA has added social workers to help connect members of the vulnerable population with housing and medical services. There are also new outreach specialists deployed on the Market-Frankford and Broad Street Lines to reinforce the rules for riding and serve as eyes and ears for SEPTA Police. When there is an incident on the system, police have access to video from more than 28,000 cameras to aid in investigations and identify offenders.”

SEPTA station crash: 3 killed after SUV strikes pedestrians, hits turnstile, catches fire in Philadelphia’s Kensington section

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Three people are dead after an out-of-control SUV crashed into pedestrians and then a SEPTA station in the Kensington section of Philadelphia.

A police officer who was on patrol in the area saw a white SUV traveling at a high rate of speed at Kensington and East Allegheny avenues around 2:45 a.m. Tuesday.

Police say the SUV jumped a curb and then struck three pedestrians who were on the sidewalk.

The SUV then hit the turnstile at SEPTA’s Allegheny Station before crashing into the station itself and catching on fire.

“It sounded like a bomb went off and everyone started running away,” witness Ariana Kmecak told Action News. “Once it settled down, people started walking closer towards it. Then they saw the car so they started running over.”

Police say the male driver of the SUV was killed.

Two pedestrians, a male and female, were pronounced dead at the scene.

“There is a male body right in front of the vehicle. That body is clearly decapitated. The body is clearly mangled and appears to be somewhat burned,” Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

A third pedestrian, a 53-year-old male, was taken to Temple University Hospital with serious injuries. He is listed in stable condition.

Authorities say they have surveillance video showing the crash.

A large crack can be seen on the brick wall of the SEPTA station.

The Department of Licenses and Inspections has been called to check the structural damage at the station.

The area is closed off to traffic and SEPTA is bypassing the train stop as police continue to investigate.
