Phillies blank Padres in NLCS Game 1 behind sensational Zack Wheeler, monster Kyle Schwarber homer

Dominant performance from an ace? Check. Home runs from your big sluggers? Check. The Philadelphia Phillies’ dream October somehow got better on Tuesday as Zack Wheeler flummoxed the San Diego Padres in Game 1 of the NLCS. Wheeler fired seven innings of sparkling one-hit ball, striking out eight to earn a 2-0 win.

Those two runs came on two swings off Padres starter Yu Darvish. The first sailed high into the air off the bat of Bryce Harper in the fourth, landing just barely in the left field seats. The second was a missile off the mighty bat of NL home run champ Kyle Schwarber. With an exit velocity of 119.7 mph and an estimated distance of 488 feet, it broke all manner of postseason Statcast records, and possibly Harper’s brain.

Outside of those swings, this was a tried and true pitchers duel. Darvish only allowed one other hit across seven innings of work himself, but the damage was done.

Beyond the win, the Schwarber homer has to be encouraging for the Phillies’ chances at a championship. Their stalwart leadoff hitter was batting .050 so far in the 2022 playoffs coming into the game. No one was worried that he couldn’t handle the postseason stage — he now has 10 postseason homers — but a prolonged slump might have forced the Phillies to alter their lineup plan.

The most intriguing moment of the game may have been when Phillies manager Rob Thomson chose to end Wheeler’s dominant night after just 83 pitches. He got a spotless eighth inning out of Seranthony Dominguez, but Jose Alvarado courted trouble in the ninth inning. The left-hander walked Jurickson Profar with one out, then had to work around a botched fielder’s choice that put two men on. He escaped by getting Manny Machado to pop up and then struck out Josh Bell.

The Phillies are now up 1-0, with a road win in the books. Tomorrow afternoon, they will send Aaron Nola to the mound opposite San Diego’s Blake Snell looking for a 2-0 lead.

‘Doctor Strange 2’ Flies to Sensational $90M Friday – The Hollywood Reporter

Game on.

Marvel Studios and Disney’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is on course to score $185 million to $200 million in its domestic debut and land one of the biggest openings of all time domestically after grossing an enormous $90 million on Friday.

Disney is being more conservative in suggesting an opening weekend in the $170 million to $185 range.

Friday’s haul — which included $36 million in Thursday previews — is the seventh biggest opening day of all time and gives the Marvel Cinematic Universe five of the top 10 opening days ever. It is also more than the entire opening weekends of 10 MCU titles, including the first Doctor Strange, which opened to $85.1 million in 2016, not adjusted for inflation.

Directed by Sam Raimi, the $200 million tentpole returns Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role. Doctor Strange 2 began opening overseas on Wednesday, grossing an impressive $139.3 million so far for an early global total of $229.3 million through Friday.

The sequel’s performance is a huge victory as Hollywood and theater owners kick off the summer 2022 box office season. After two years of struggle due the pandemic, studios are preparing to release a parade of delayed tentpoles.

Doctor Strange 2 is playing in 4,545 theaters, the widest location count of the pandemic and the fifth-biggest of all time, another sign that the movie business is emerging from COVID-19 after more than two years of fits and starts. While overall attendance is still down compared to “normal” times, moviegoer confidence is at an all-time high.

Another draw: Imax and other cinema operators are heavily promoting the fact that the first teaser trailer for James Cameron’s sequel Avatar: The Way of Water is premiering exclusively in theaters before Doctor Strange 2.

The generally well-reviewed superhero pic earned a B+ CinemaScore in the U.S., and so far is being fueled by moviegoers between ages 18-34. Males made up more than 62 percent of Friday ticket buyers.

After the first Doctor Strange, Cumberbatch’s character gained even more visibility when he appeared in Avengers: Infinity War and, much more recently, Sony and Marvel’s $1.9 billion blockbuster Spider-Man: No Way Home, which grossed a near-record $122 million on its first Friday (including $50 million in previews) on its way to a $260.1 million domestic debut.

If it hits $200 million, Raimi’s movie would boast the sixth biggest opening for a superhero title behind Black Panther ($202 million), The Avengers ($207.3 million), Avengers: Infinity War ($257.7 million), Spider-Man: No Way Home ($260.1 million) and Avengers: Endgame ($357.1 million).

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness picks up where No Way Home left off, with Stephen Strange coming to the assistance of a young girl named America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) who can jump across various universes. Now, however, a demonic force is trying to steal her powers.

Part sentimental, part horror, part comedy and always action-packed, the adventure that ensues sees the quirky superhero face-off with the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), meet up with an old flame (Rachel McAdams), enlist the aid of a former sidekick who has now transformed into the Sorcerer Supreme (Benedict Wong) and encounters Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor). There are also key cameos regarding other MCU properties, but readers won’t find any spoilers here.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is rated PG-13.

May 5, 7:55 a.m. Updated with Friday grosses and revised estimates.

BREAKING: Kevin Magnussen to make sensational F1 return with Haas in 2022

Kevin Magnussen has signed a multi-year deal to make a sensational return to Formula 1 with the Haas squad in 2022, following the team’s decision to part ways with Nikita Mazepin ahead of the season start.

Having driven in F1 for McLaren (2014-15) and Renault (2016), Magnussen raced for Haas from 2017 until his departure from the sport at the end of the 2020 season.

The Danish driver then moved Stateside, taking part in sportscars and IndyCar, and was set to join Peugeot’s World Endurance Championship squad in 2022.

But Magnussen, 29, will instead make an unexpected return to Formula 1 to partner sophomore driver Mick Schumacher for the season ahead, following Haas’ decision – announced last Saturday – to terminate Mazepin’s contract with immediate effect.

READ MORE: Haas part ways with Nikita Mazepin ‘with immediate effect’

Magnussen last drove for the team at the 2020 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Team Principal Guenther Steiner said: “I’m delighted to welcome Kevin Magnussen back to Haas F1 Team. When looking for a driver who could bring value to the team, not to mention a wealth of Formula 1 experience, Kevin was a straightforward decision for us.

“Kevin’s immediate availability means we can tap into him as a resource for pre-season testing alongside both Mick Schumacher and Pietro Fittipaldi. Pietro’s going to be first in this week with half a day’s running at the test on Thursday – that’s a great opportunity for him, with Mick and Kevin doing the rest ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix.

READ MORE: ANALYSIS – Why Haas brought Magnussen back to F1

“Kevin was a key component in our previous successes – not least when we both scored our best finishes in Formula 1 back in 2018. He continued to show last year that he’s an elite race car driver adding wins and podiums to his resume.

“As a veteran presence in both the garage and the engineering room, he’ll provide a solid benchmark for us with the on-going development of the VF-22. We’re all looking forward to welcoming Kevin back this week in Bahrain.”

Team Principal Guenther Steiner (L) and owner Gene Haas (R)

Magnussen added: “I was obviously very surprised but equally very excited to receive the call from Haas F1 Team. I was looking in a different direction regarding my commitments for 2022 but the opportunity to return to compete in Formula 1, and with a team I know extremely well, was simply too appealing. I really have to say thank you to both Peugeot and Chip Ganassi Racing for releasing me promptly – both are great organizations.

“Naturally, I also want to thank Gene Haas and Guenther Steiner for the chance to resume my Formula 1 career – I know just how competitive they both are and how keen they are to return to competing week in and week out. We’ve enjoyed a solid relationship and our positive association remained even when I left at the end of 2020.

“I’ve been briefed as much as possible on the development of the VF-22 and the potential in the package. There’s work to do but I’m excited to be a part of it. I can’t wait to get back behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car in Bahrain.”

Meghan Markle Scores Sensational and Final Victory Over Mail Online

Meghan Markle scored a stunning—and final—victory in her long running legal action against the publishers of the Daily Mail, the Mail on Sunday and Mail Online today, after a judge dismissed an appeal by publishers Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL) against her.

In a statement Meghan criticized the “harmful practices” of tabloids as “a daily fail that divide us.”

“This is a victory not just for me, but for anyone who has ever felt scared to stand up for what’s right,” she said.

Meghan called on people to be “collectively brave enough to reshape a tabloid industry that conditions people to be cruel, and profits from the lies and pain that they create.”

Meghan accused ANL of dragging the trial out and attempting to “twist facts and manipulate the public (even during the appeal itself), making a straightforward case extraordinarily convoluted in order to generate more headlines and sell more newspapers—a model that rewards chaos above truth.”

Meghan added: “As far removed as it may seem from your personal life, it’s not. Tomorrow it could be you. These harmful practices don’t happen once in a blue moon—they are a daily fail that divide us, and we all deserve better.”

Meghan was suing ANL for invasion of privacy and violating her copyright after ANL published extensive sections of a “deeply personal” hand-written letter she sent to her estranged father Thomas Markle shortly after her wedding to Prince Harry.

Earlier this year, a senior judge, Lord Justice Warby, who is highly experienced in media law, granted Meghan a so-called “summary judgment.”

This meant that he had unilaterally decided there was absolutely no prospect of ANL succeeding in their attempt to defend themselves against Meghan’s action, and was therefore calling a halt to proceedings in Meghan’s favor, without proceeding to a full trial.

ANL was appealing this decision, saying that the case at least deserved to be tried in court.

However their argument was soundly rejected by the Court of Appeal today, despite the fact that ANL introduced dramatic new evidence: a witness statement from Meghan’s former communications chief Jason Knauf, showing that Meghan had briefed the authors of the book Finding Freedom, something she had long denied.

Meghan was forced to admit to the court that she had “forgotten” sending Knauf a lengthy email equipping him with specific briefing points for the authors, Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand.

However the presiding judge, Sir Geoffrey Vos, Master of the Rolls, said “This was, at best, an unfortunate lapse of memory on her part, but did not bear on the issues.”

Knauf also provided more damaging evidence against Meghan, including a set of messages from her, which stated that she had addressed the letter to “Daddy,” specifically so that if her father did leak it, it would “pull at the heart strings.”

ANL said this new evidence showed that Meghan had written the letter in consultation with her press office, and with the expectation it would leak, and that she therefore should have had a different expectation of privacy around it than another private letter.

However, Vos refuted this, saying the new evidence was “of little assistance” to the matter in hand.

ANL also argued that Meghan herself had caused the letter to be put in the public domain when five of her friends gave an interview to People magazine in which they mentioned the letter, characterizing it, ANL said, incorrectly.

ANL said they were merely offering Thomas Markle a right to reply and correct the record.

The judge blew this claim out of the water, saying that the publication was “not a justified or proportionate means of correcting inaccuracies about the letter contained in an article published on 6 February 2019 in People magazine. The key point was that the Mail on Sunday articles focused on revealing the contents of the letter, rather than providing Mr Markle’s response to the attack on him in People magazine.”

Vos added that the Mail’s headline: “Revealed: The letter showing true tragedy of Meghan’s rift with a father she says has ‘broken her heart into a million pieces’” clearly showed “that the Mail on Sunday articles were splashed as a new public revelation of extracts from the Duchess’s letter to her father, rather than her father’s answers to what People magazine had written.”

Meghan denied she had authorized the friends to speak to People or that she had intended the letter to leak, merely arguing that she understood it might and wanted to be prepared for that eventuality.

Vos concluded: “Whilst it might have been proportionate to publish a very small part of the letter for that purpose, it was not necessary to publish half the contents of the letter as Associated Newspapers had done.”

Meghan’s thumping victory today will draw a final line under the case, and banishes the humiliating prospect of her being cross-examined in open court.

Shohei Ohtani: Sensational two-way baseball star named the unanimous choice for MVP of the American League

Ohtani, 27, is coming off a historic season that saw him starring on both the mound and at the plate for the Los Angeles Angels, a feat that has drawn comparisons to the Hall of Famer Babe Ruth.

He is the second Japanese-born player to be voted MVP, following on Ichiro Suzuki, who was voted the AL MVP in 2001 when he played for the Seattle Mariners.

As a starting pitcher, Ohtani made 23 appearances, winning nine games while suffering two losses. The Japanese hurler struck out 156 batters.

As a hitter, he crushed 46 home runs — second only to the 48 HRs struck by Salvador Perez of the Kansas City Royals and Vlad Guerrero of the Toronto Blue Jays — and drove in 100 runs in 155 games. He also stole 26 bases.

Ohtani’s performance at the plate also makes him the first player in American League or National League history with at least 45 homers, 25 stolen bases and five triples in a season.

Ohtani joins his teammate Mike Trout as an AL MVP. Trout, who missed most of the 2021 season with injuries, won the award in 2014, 2016 and 2019.

Trout congratulated Ohtani on his achievement. “It’s been something special to witness what you’ve accomplished as a teammate,” Trout wrote in a tweet. “You have put together a season of your own.”

In Japan, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida weighed in on Friday. “It’s an extraordinary accomplishment and as a Japanese citizen, I feel very proud,” he said.

Interviewed by the MLB network Thursday, Ohtani thanked teammates, the Angels fans and his manager. He also made sure to credit the doctor who performed Tommy John surgery on his elbow in 2018.
Ohtani was the 11th baseball player to be unanimously voted AL MVP after he was named first on the ballot by the 30 voters of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Toronto’s Guerrero came second, with 29 second-place votes and one for third, the BBWAA said.
In the National League, the BBWAA announced Philadelphia Phillies right fielder Bryce Harper as the 2021 MVP.

Harper was named first choice by 17 writers, and second choice by nine more, sealing his victory over Juan Soto of the Washington Nationals, who came second, and Fernando Tatis Jr. of the San Diego Padres, who came third.

Harper previously won NL MVP when he played for the Washington Nationals in 2015.
