Ukraine renews calls for US F-16s, German fighter jets after countries reverse decision on sending tanks

Ukrainian officials have renewed calls for the United States and Germany to supply them with fighter jets in their ongoing fight with Russia, after the two Western allies changed their decision on supplying tanks.

The U.S. and Germany previously said they would not send over the armored fighting vehicles but reversed the decision after further negotiations, ultimately agreeing to send more than 30 Abrams M1 tanks and 14 Leopard 2 tanks, respectively.

Ukrainian officials are now engaged in “fast-track” talks for long-range missiles and military aircraft, a top Ukrainian presidential aide said Saturday.

Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said Ukraine’s supporters in the West “understand how the war is developing” and the need for planes capable of providing cover for the tanks they pledged to send.

Podolyak said some of Ukraine’s Western partners maintain a “conservative” attitude to sending advanced weaponry “due to fear of changes in the international architecture.”

“We need to work with this. We must show (our partners) the real picture of this war,” Podolyak said in remarks to online video channel Freedom. “We must speak reasonably and tell them, for example, ‘This and this will reduce fatalities, this will reduce the burden on infrastructure. This will reduce security threats to the European continent, this will keep the war localized.’ And we are doing it.”

Podolyak did not identify any partnering countries.

Russia, which has received its own arms and supplies from China, North Korea, and Iran, has accused the West of providing Kyiv with increasingly sophisticated weapons. Russian officials say supplying Ukraine with weapons constitutes “direct involvement.”

Germany and the United States announced Wednesday they would send advanced battle tanks along with the Bradley and Marder vehicles to Ukraine and train Ukrainian troops to use them in an effort to help Kyiv make breakthroughs in combat stalemates.

The decision was met with groans and criticism from the Kremlin, which continues to criticize Western interference.

UKRAINE-RUSSIA WAR: GERMANY AGREES TO SEND 2 BATTALIONS OF LEOPARD 2 TANKS AFTER HEAVY PRESSURE

German Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius said Ukrainian troops will learn how to operate the German-made Leopard 2 tanks at a training site in Germany by the end of the month.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense took to Twitter Wednesday to celebrate the start of the training.

Zelenskyy also thanked the U.S. for the military aid.

“Thank you @POTUS for another powerful decision to provide Abrams to [Ukraine]. Grateful to [the U.S.] people for leadership support!” he wrote Wednesday. “It’s an important step on the path to victory. Today the free world is united as never before for a common goal – liberation of [Ukraine].”

“We’re moving forward,” he added.

North Korea condemns US sending battle tanks to Ukraine | Russia-Ukraine war News

Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of North Korea’s leader, accused the US of fighting a ‘proxy war’ against Russia.

The influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has condemned the decision by the United States to supply Ukraine with advanced battle tanks to help fight Russian forces, accusing Washington of crossing a “red line” and escalating a “proxy war” designed to destroy Moscow.

The comments on Friday by Kim Yo Jong underscored North Korea’s deepening alignment with Russia over the war in Ukraine while it also confronts the US and its Asian allies about its own growing nuclear weapons and missiles programme.

“I express serious concern over the US escalating the war situation by providing Ukraine with military hardware for ground offensive,” Kim Yo Jong said in a statement, her first public remarks in months.

“The US is the arch criminal which poses serious threat and challenge to the strategic security of Russia and pushes the regional situation to the present grave phase,” said Kim, who is vice-department director of the Central Committee of the Workers Party of Korea.

“I do not doubt that any military hardware the US and the West boast of will be burnt into pieces in the face of the indomitable fighting spirit and might of the heroic Russian army and people,” she said, adding that North Korea will always “stand in the same trench” with Russia.

Kim’s comments, carried by the country’s official Korean Central News Agency, came after the US said it would send 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, reversing months of indecision by Washington on the issue. The US announcement followed Germany’s decision to also provide Ukraine with 14 Leopard 2 A6 tanks from its own stocks.

Kim said US President Joe Biden’s administration was “further crossing the red line” by sending its main tanks to Ukraine and that the decision reflects a “sinister intention to realize its hegemonic aim by further expanding the proxy war for destroying Russia”.

North Korea has blamed the US for the crisis in Ukraine, insisting that the West’s “hegemonic policy” forced Russia to take military action to protect its security interests.

North Korea is also the only nation other than Russia and Syria to recognise the independence of Donetsk and Luhansk, two Russian-backed separatist regions in eastern Ukraine, and has also hinted at plans to send workers there to help with rebuilding efforts.

The US has accused North Korea of sending large supplies of artillery shells and other ammunition to Russia to support its offensive in Ukraine, although North Korea has repeatedly denied the claim.

Pyongyang has also accelerated its weapons development, test-firing more than 70 missiles in 2022 alone, including potentially nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Germany would not block Poland from sending tanks to Ukraine, minister says

PARIS, Jan 22 (Reuters) – Germany’s foreign minister said on Sunday her government would not stand in the way if Poland wants to send its Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, in a possible breakthrough for Kyiv which wants the tanks for its fight against Russia’s invasion.

Ukrainian officials have been calling on Western allies to supply them with the modern German-made tanks for months – but Berlin has so far held back from sending them, or allowing other NATO countries to do so.

Asked what would happen if Poland went ahead and sent its Leopard 2 tanks without German approval, Annalena Baerbock said on France’s LCI TV: “For the moment the question has not been asked, but if we were asked we would not stand in the way.”

Her remarks appeared to go further than German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s comments at a summit in Paris earlier on Sunday that all decisions on weapons deliveries would be made in coordination with allies including the United States.

Germany has been under heavy pressure to let Leopards go to Ukraine. But Scholz’s Social Democrat party is traditionally sceptical of military involvements and wary of sudden moves that could cause Moscow to further escalate.

German defense minister Boris Pistorius said on Sunday that he expected a decision soon on the tanks, though he kept up a note of caution.

Pistorius told ARD TV that Germany would not make a hasty decision because the government had many factors to consider, including consequences at home for the security of the German population.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy repeated his long-standing plea for the tanks at his Sunday meeting with former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson who was visiting Kyiv.

“We need more weapons: tanks, aircraft, long-range missiles,” Zelenskiy said, according to a statement on his website.

Ukraine says the heavily armoured Western battle tanks would give the Ukrainian ground troops more mobility and protection ahead of a new Russian offensive which Kyiv expects in the near future. It would also help Ukraine retake some of the territory that has fallen to Russia.

After the Paris summit, Scholz told a news conference that all weapons deliveries to Ukraine so far had taken place in close coordination with Western partners. “We will do that in the future,” he said.

Speaking at the same news conference, French President Emmanuel Macron said he did not rule out the possibility of sending Leclerc tanks to Ukraine.

Macron said that sending tanks must not escalate the situation, must take into account the time to train Ukrainians to be effective, and must not endanger France’s own security.

“Regarding the Leclercs, I asked the Army minister to work on it, but nothing has been ruled out,” Macron said, adding that the move would have to be coordinated with allies such as Germany in the coming days and weeks.

German sources have told Reuters they would allow German-made tanks to be sent to Ukraine to help its defence against Russia if the United States agrees to send its own tanks. But U.S. officials have said President Joe Biden’s administration is not poised to send its own tanks, including the M1 Abrams.

The Kremlin’s spokesman said on Friday that Western countries supplying additional tanks to Ukraine would not change the course of the conflict and that they would add to the problems of the Ukrainian people.

Lawmakers call for sending Abrams tanks to Ukraine as Russia warns of ‘global catastrophe’

Lawmakers upped the pressure on the Biden administration to send M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine on Sunday as Russian officials warned of a “global catastrophe” if more powerful weapons are supplied to Kyiv.

Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., and Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., visited Kyiv and met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy over the weekend.

“The debacle regarding sending tanks to Ukraine must end. It is impossible for Ukraine to expel Russia without tanks. I am hoping Germany and the United States will both send tanks ASAP – opening up other countries’ desire to help Ukraine,” Graham said in a statement on Sunday. “The tanks are outcome determinative in expelling Russia from Ukraine.”

Rep. Michael McCaul, the Republican chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, echoed Graham’s sentiment, telling ABC News that “Germany’s waiting on us to take the lead” and sending “just one” Abrams tank to Ukraine could unleash the flow of them from Germany and other European countries.

US HOSTS ALLIED DEFENSE OFFICIALS AS RUSSIA PLANS FOR MASSIVE OFFENSIVE IN WEEKS AHEAD

In Russia, State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin, the speaker of the lower house of Russia’s parliament, said that providing more weapons to Ukraine risks “global tragedy that would destroy” Western countries.

“Supplies of offensive weapons to the Kyiv regime would lead to a global catastrophe,” Volodin said. “If Washington and NATO supply weapons that would be used for striking peaceful cities and making attempts to seize our territory as they threaten to do, it would trigger a retaliation with more powerful weapons.”

US ADVISES UKRAINE TO HOLD OFF ON MAJOR OFFENSIVE UNTIL LATEST ARMS SHIPMENT: REPORT

French President Emmanuel Macron said Sunday that he asked his defense minister to “work on” the idea of sending Leclerc battle tanks to Ukraine, while Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said that his country was waiting for the green light from Germany to transfer Leopard tanks to Ukraine.

“Evidence of the Russian army’s war crimes can be seen on television and on YouTube,” Morawiecki said in an interview with the Polish state news agency PAP on Sunday. “What more does Germany need to open its eyes and start to act in line with the potential of the German state?”

Germany won’t keep Poland from sending tanks to Ukraine – DW – 01/22/2023

Germany would not stand in the way if Poland sent its German-made Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on Sunday in an interview with French television LCI.

Asked what would happen if Poland went ahead and sent its Leopard 2 tanks without German approval, Baerbock said: “For the moment the question has not been asked, but if we were asked we would not stand in the way.”

“We know how important these tanks are and this is why we are discussing this now with our partners,” the German foreign minister added. “We need to make sure people’s lives are saved and Ukraine’s territory liberated.”

Earlier Sunday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reaffirmed that Berlin and Paris would support Ukraine in its fight against Russian occupation, and would not allow Europe to revert back to “hatred and national rivalries.”

“We will continue to provide Ukraine with all the support its needs for as long as necessary. Together, as Europeans, to defend our European peace project,” he said while on a visit to Paris to celebrate 60 years of the landmark Franco-German Elysee Treaty.

Germany has been under considerable pressure both to deliver Leopard 2 battle tanks to Ukraine and to allow other countries to send their German-made tanks to Ukrainian forces. But Berlin has been hesitant to send the highly advanced, Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine out of concern it could lead to a widening of the Russian war in Ukraine.

Poland has repeatedly slammed Berlin over its hesitant stance.

“Germany’s attitude is unacceptable. It has been almost a year since the war began. Innocent people are dying every day,” Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told the national Polish PAP news agency. “Russian bombs are wreaking havoc in Ukrainian cities. Civilian targets are being attacked, women and children are being murdered.”

Here are other updates on the war in Ukraine on Sunday, January 22:

Norway estimates over 300,000 casualties

Norwegian Chief of Defense Eirik Kristoffersen said around 180,000 Russian and 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed or injured in the war in Ukraine.

“Russian losses are beginning to approach around 180,000 dead or wounded soldiers,” he said in an interview with TV2, without specifying how the numbers were calculated.

“Ukrainian losses are probably over 100,000 dead or wounded. In addition Ukraine has about 30,000 civilians who died in this terrible war,” Kristoffersen said.

It’s the highest estimate after General Mark Milley, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, in November said the Russian army had suffered more than 100,000 dead or wounded, with a “probably” similar toll on the Ukrainian side.

Neither Russia nor Ukraine released their casualty numbers in months, and none of the figures can be independently verified.

Kristoffersen warned, however, “Russia is able to continue (this war) for quite a long time,” citing Moscow’s mobilization and arms production capacities.

Macron doesn’t rule out delivering French heavy tanks to Ukraine

French President Emmanuel Macron said that his country was still studying the decision to deliver French-mad Leclerc heavy tanks to Ukraine.

Speaking at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Sunday, Macron said he had asked the Defense Ministry to work on it, stressing that “nothing is excluded.”

However, the French president stressed that dispatching any hardware to Ukraine to push Russian forces away should be “collectively” decided and coordinated with allies, Germany included.

Macron also said that deploying the heavy tanks to Ukraine must not weaken France’s own defense capabilities or escalate the conflict.

Germany has been under immense pressure lately to deliver battle tanks to Ukraine. Berlin has been hesitant to send the highly advanced, German-made Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine or allow other nations to transfer them.

On Sunday, Scholz reiterated Berlin’s stance on the matter, stressing that his country had always acted in close coordination with its allies.

Germany’s new defense minister planning to visit Ukraine

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said he was “certain” that he would travel to Ukraine soon. “Probably even within the next four weeks,” he told Bild am Sonntag newspaper.

Pistorius, who took office on Thursday after his predecessor Christine Lambrecht resigned, said his ministry was looking into how to be best prepared for any possible decisions on the matter.

“We are in very close dialogue with our international partners, first and foremost with the US, on this issue.”

Putin ally warns against supplying Ukraine with offensive arms

Vyacheslav Volodin, the speaker of Russia’s lower house of parliament, warned that the West delivering offensive weapons to Ukraine would lead the world to a “terrible war.”

“If Washington and NATO countries supply weapons that will be used to strike civilian cities and attempt to seize our territories, as they threaten, this will lead to retaliatory measures using more powerful weapons,” Volodin said on the Telegram messaging app.

“Deliveries of offensive weapons to the Kyiv regime will lead to a global catastrophe,” he said.

The head of the State Duma said Moscow considered attacks on the Ukrainian territories of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, which Russia annexed and occupied, as an attack on its territory.

War prompted ‘new revival’ of unity, says Zelenskyy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he was confident of victory as he marked the Day of Ukrainian Unity. Ukrainians celebrate the 1919 unification between the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the West Ukrainian People’s Republic on January 22.

Zelenskyy said in an emotional video that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine led to a “new revival of our Ukrainian unity” as millions of Ukrainians stood together to defend the country.

“Each region protects the other,” he said. “And all of us together are defending Kyiv. And all of us together defend Kharkiv. And all of us together are liberating Kherson.”

UK intelligence: Russia struggling to expand army

The British Defence Ministry said in its regular intelligence update that Russia was likely struggling to find the material and staff it needed after Moscow announced plans to expand its armed forces.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu recently announced measures to expand the military, including increasing troop numbers from 1.15 million to 1.5 million.

“Shoigu’s plans signal that the Russian leadership highly likely assesses that an enhanced conventional military threat will endure for many years beyond the current Ukraine war,” the British report said.

“However, Russia will highly likely struggle to staff and equip the planned expansion.”

The British ministry has released daily intelligence reports on the war since Russia launched the war in Ukraine last year. Russia accused the UK of a disinformation campaign.

More DW coverage on the war in Ukraine

A new investigation by a German newspaper said Bulgaria’s former government quietly supplied Ukraine with weapons soon after Russia invaded last year. DW looks into the news about the secret weapons supplies and what it means for Bulgaria.

Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy grid has forced many cities to roll out power cuts to save energy. Kyiv residents speak about the serious consequences for people out on the streets.
