Feds seize more than $600 million in assets from FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried: Court filing

The federal government has seized more than $600 million in assets from disgraced cryptocurrency executive Sam-Bankman Fried this month, according to a new court filing.

The seizures are part of the criminal case against Bankman-Fried, 30, who has pleaded not guilty to fraud and conspiracy charges linked to the alleged theft of billions of dollars from customers of and investors in FTX, the now-bankrupt crypto exchange he founded.

Federal prosecutors provided on Friday a list of assets subject to forfeiture as a result of the criminal charges, including cash held in various banks and accounts along with more than 55 million Robinhood shares.

The most recent seizure came on Thursday, when the government took $94,570,490.63 in U.S. currency held at Silvergate Bank, according to the filing. Several Binance accounts have also been seized, the filing shows, though their values were not included.

Former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, who faces fraud charges over the collapse of the bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange, arrives on the day of a hearing at Manhattan federal court in New York City, Jan. 3, 2023.

David Dee Delgado/Reuters, FILE

Bankman-Fried has been charged with eight counts of fraud and conspiracy. Federal prosecutors have alleged Bankman-Fried orchestrated one of the “biggest financial frauds in American history” by steering billions in FTX customer and investor money and funneling it to his privately controlled hedge fund Alameda Research.

Other funds were used to buy lavish real estate and to make tens of millions in political donations, court records stated.

He is tentatively scheduled to stand trial in October.

Bankman-Fried was extradited from the Bahamas, where he lived in a multimillion-dollar mansion, on Dec. 21.

Before his arrest last month, Bankman-Fried insisted in numerous interviews, including one with ABC News, that he did not know about any improper use of funds from FTX customers.

In the ABC News interview, Bankman-Fried told George Stephanopoulos that he has just one ATM card and “$100,000 left in my bank account.”

“That’s honestly, to my knowledge, that’s what I have,” he said.

Andrew Tate loses $4 million in assets after Romanian authorities seize luxury vehicles, watches

Romanian authorities seized nearly $4 million in assets as part of their sex trafficking investigation against social media influence Andrew Tate on Sunday.

Romania’s National Agency for the Management of Seized Assets seized 29 “moveable assets” from Tate’s house near the capital of Bucharest and pictures from the compound show authorities towing away luxury vehicles. Tate, his brother and two women are facing sex trafficking charges.

Images show authorities loading up a Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini and other exotic vehicles on Saturday. Authorities did not release images of the watches and other items they confiscated.

Tate has been in Romanian custody since December 29, and Romanian courts rejected his challenge to his current 30-day arrest warrant, according to Reuters.

Prosecutors from the anti-organized-crime unit issued a statement on the matter after raiding Tate’s and others’ properties in Bucharest in late December.

ANDREW TATE CLAIMS BIG TECH BANNED HIM AFTER ‘LARGE SWATHS’ OF PEOPLE AGREED WITH HIS ‘MASCULINE VALUES’

“The four suspects … appear to have created an organized crime group with the purpose of recruiting, housing and exploiting women by forcing them to create pornographic content meant to be seen on specialized websites for a cost,” prosecutors said at the time. “They would have gained important sums of money.”

The investigation arose from six women who allege they were sexually exploited by the group.

Tate gained notoriety on social media for his rampant misogyny and commentary on masculinity. He has been banned from most mainstream social media platforms, though he made a return to Twitter following billionaire Elon Musk’s acquisition of the company in November.

Tate got into a viral argument with climate activist Greta Thunberg in late December, bragging to her about owning over 30 cars with “enormous emissions.” Romanian authorities now possess several of the vehicles.

Jeremy Renner accident – update: Police seize Snowcat that crushed Marvel star to rule out ‘mechanical failure’

Jeremy Renner in ‘critical but stable’ condition after ‘weather-related’ accident

Actor Jeremy Renner has undergone two surgeries at a Nevada hospital after suffering serious injuries in a “tragic” snowploughing accident.

The Hurt Locker star is “conscious, stable and speaking” and reportedly underwent the surgeries as part of his “long road to recovery”.

“We can confirm that Jeremy has suffered blunt chest trauma and orthopaedic injuries and has undergone surgery today (2 January),” Renner’s family said in their original statement. “He has returned from surgery and remains in the intensive care unit in critical but stable condition.”

In a press conference on Tuesday (3 January), Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam described how a family member had been driving Renner’s car when it got stuck in the snow.

“He went to retrieve his PistenBully or SnowCat – an extremely large piece of snow-moving equipment – to get his vehicle moving,” Balaam said. “After moving the vehicle from the stuck location Mr Renner got out of the PistenBully to speak to his family member and it started to roll.

“He attempted to try and get into the driver’s seat of the PistenBully, it was at this point that he was run over by the PistenBully.”

The plough accidentally ran over one of the actor’s legs, despite a large array of safety features, leading to major blood loss, a neighbour said.

In his first post since the accident, Renner shared a selfie from his hospital bed with the caption: “Thank you all for your kind words. Im [sic] too messed up now to type. But I send love to you all.”

Renner, 51, was met with an outpouring of support from his fans and Marvel co-stars, including Chris Hemsworth, Taika Waititi and Chris Pratt.

Details of Jeremy Renner’s snowplow accident revealed in 911 call

It has been reported that Jeremy Renner was “completely crushed” after a snow plough ran him over this week.

According to a 911 recording obtained by TMZ, the Marvel star was heard screaming in the background of the call as he was having “extreme difficulty” breathing due to his chest collapsing and his upper torso getting crushed.

A reminder of what Renner’s family have said

It’s been a few days now since Jeremy Renner was hospitalised after being ran over by his snow plough.

In their first and only statement so far, Renner’s family wrote 2 January: “We can confirm that Jeremy has suffered blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries and has undergone surgery today.

“He has returned from surgery and remains in the intensive care unit in critical but stable condition.

“Jeremy’s family would like to express their gratitude to the incredible doctors and nurses looking after him, Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue, Washoe County Sheriff, Reno City Mayor Hillary Schieve and the Carano and Murdock families.

“They are also tremendously overwhelmed and appreciative of the outpouring of love and support from his fans.”

John Legere wishes Renner well ‘from one superhero to another’

Former T-Mobile CEO John Legere somewhat confusingly shared well wishes for Renner “from one superhero to another”.

The tech magnate has frequently likened himself to Batman over the course of his career, describing competitors like AT&T and Verizon as his “villains”.

Renner, meanwhile, plays a real superhero – Marvel’s Hawkeye.

Renner is an ‘honourary deputy sheriff’ of the area

To many, Renner is best known as Hawkeye, but did you know he holds another special title in his community?

“He is an honourary deputy sheriff,” Balaam shared. “When I took office in 2019, he came and with his popularity amongst kids in the Marvels, he has a huge impact. Those kids that he touched during Shop with the Sheriff – he showed up and shopped with our kids – I can guarantee they will never forget that moment that they got.”

“He shared his time with us there and not only shopped with a few kids but interacted with the kids,” Balaam added.

“Throughout the community, he has been very generous. He’s one of those individuals that I can tell you most of the time you don’t know that he’s doing it, but he has made a tremendous impact on this community.”

Snowcat accidents aren’t uncommon

While this was a “tragic” incident it was not a freak accident. Although Balaam could not provide specific numbers or statistics for how common this kind of Snowcat incident is, he did say: “I would have to tell you probably, there’s always at least – because this type of Snowcat is one you’d see at ski resorts – that there’s always these types of injuries or accidents that occur. That exact number I do not know.”

Renner was conscious when responders arrived

Immediately after being nearly fatally crushed by the Snowcat, Renner was apparently still conscious. When asked what condition the actor was in when they arrived on scene, Balaam said that Renner was “speaking to the first responders”.

There was no doctor on-scene despite prior reports

According to earlier reports, Renner’s neighbour, a doctor, had saved his life by putting a tourniquet on his leg.

However, during Tuesday’s press conference, Sheriff Balaam confirmed that there “was no doctor on scene. It was good neighbours of Mr Renner’s that came out with some towels and rendered some aid”.

When asked whether they had tied a tourniquet, Balaam responded: “That part I do not know. I just know that they came out with some towels and helped him until our first responders could get there.”

Messages of support continue to roll in

Since Renner’s first social media post after the accident – a selfie shared from his hospital bed – commenters have sent their best wishes.

The actor’s Avengers co-stars Chris Pratt and Chris Hemsworth were quick to share their love, but since then a raft of other A-listers have commented, including Paul Bettany and Jimmy Fallon.

“Love you mate. Sending you love and healing,” Bettany wrote.

“Lotsa love out there for you bud,” wrote Fallon.

Unfortunately, some people on social media have used Renner’s accident to craft memes making light of his injury.

Many of Renner’s fans have scathed those joking about the incident on Twitter, with one writing: “Y’all quit saying stuff like, ‘he’s Hawkeye, as long as his arms are fine’ and ‘he’s a superhero’ Y’ALL THIS IS AN ACTUAL PERSON! YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE CONCERNED FOR HIM! NOT MAKING YOUR DUMB JOKES!”

Do you need a licence to drive a Snowcat?

Following the Sheriff’s press conference, a reporter asked if anyone could drive a Snowcat or if you needed a licence to operate one.

“It was on a private road, so he can drive that Snowcat. In this instance, as Mr Renner always does, those private roads. He was being a great neighbour and he was ploughing those roads for his neighbours up there. Again they had three feet,” Sheriff Balaam responded.

Now, while the Marvel actor was on private roads, many companies require professional Snowcat operators/drivers to have at least a driver’s licence. Some even require their drivers to go through training and certification before operating the Snowcat.

Sheriff clarifies ‘misinformation’ of Renner’s accident

Further in his press briefing on Tuesday (3 January), Sheriff Darin Balaam of Washoe County shared clarifying “details” of Renner’s accident to clear up “some misinformation that’s circulated”.

Balaam said: “I want to be clear here as well as going on a major accident investigation and we are handling it as we would any other major accident investigation. We are still conducting interviews and processing items from the scene.

“Based on our investigation, Mr Renner’s personal vehicle, which was being driven by a family member, had become stuck in the snow near his home.

“Mr Renner went to retrieve his PistenBully, or Snowcat, an extremely large piece of snow removal equipment, weighing at least 14,330 lbs (approx 6500 kg), in an effort to get his vehicle moving,” he continued.

“After successfully towing his personal vehicle from its stuck location, Mr Renner got out of his PistenBully to speak to his family member. At this point, it is observed that the PistenBully started to roll. In an effort to stop the rolling PistenBully, Mr Renner attempts to get back into the driver’s seat of the Pistenbully.

“Based on our investigation, it’s at this point that Mr Renner is run over by the Pistenbully. An eye-witness detailed seeing Mr Renner getting into the PistenBully and not seeing him again until the PistenBully came to a rest in a pile of snow in front of his driveway,” Balaam explained.

“At this point in the investigation, we do not believe Mr Renner was impaired at all and we believe this is a tragic accident.”

While the investigation is ongoing, Balaam stressed that they “do not suspect any foul play”.

Local authorities share timeline of accident response

During a brief press conference yesterday (3 January), Sheriff Darin Balaam of Washoe County provided a quick timeline of local authorities and medical response to Renner’s accident.

Balaam began: “On Sunday morning at 8:55am, a 911 call was received for a 10-50, or a crash involving a Snowcat versus pedestrian. The subject had been run over by a Snowcat in the area of Mount Rose Highway.”

Elaborating on the weather and road conditions at that hour, Balaam said: “The previous evening, we had seen approximately three feet of snow fall in the Mt Rose area, and multiple cars were abandoned on the multiple roads, including Mt Rose Hwy.

“Additionally, while it was not snowing at the time of the accident, Mt Rose Hwy was closed at that hour because of severe winter weather, of snow which had not yet been removed from the highway.”

Balaam shared that the first Washoe County Sheriff’s unit arrived on-scene at 9:30am, explaining that the “delay was a direct result of the weather, the traffic – moving around abandoned cars in the roadway – and the closure of Mt Rose Hwy”.

He continued: “When the first Washoe County Sheriff’s Office unit arrived on-scene, Truckee’s Meadows Fire Protection District and North Lake Tahoe Protection Fire District were on-scene.

“At 9:37, care flight landed in the vicinity of Mt Rose Hwy,” Balaam added. “At 9:56, Mr Renner was taken via care flight to a Reno area hospital.”

Idaho murders latest: Police seize five cars from crime scene as college community to hold vigils for students

Idaho student murders: Police believe four killed in ‘targeted attack’

Police have seized five cars from the home where four University of Idaho students were brutally stabbed to death in a quadruple murder that has rocked the small college town of Moscow.

A tow truck removed the vehicles on Tuesday – some of them believed to belong to the victims – and took them to “a more secure long-term storage location to continue processing evidence,” the Moscow Police Department said.

The development comes as the killer or killers is still at large 17 days on from 13 November, when Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kerndole and Ethan Chapin were butchered to deaths in their beds.

On Wednesday, the Moscow community will hold vigils in honour of the slain students, with some of the victims’ family members expected to speak.

The vigils were delayed until after the Thanksgiving break as terrified students fled the town. Police call logs analysed by The Independent reveal that, in the aftermath of the murders, locals remain on edge and have called 911 multiple times to report “suspicious” men and other disturbing incidents in the area.

Police seize five cars from crime scene

Police have seized five cars from the home where four University of Idaho students were brutally stabbed to death in a quadruple murder that has rocked the small college town of Moscow.

A tow truck removed the vehicles from outside the property on King Road on Tuesday – some of them believed to belong to the victims – and took them to “a more secure long-term storage location to continue processing evidence,” the Moscow Police Department said.

“Today, as part of the ongoing homicide investigation and original search warrant, there will be an increase in detective activity and tow trucks on-site as investigators move five vehicles from within the police perimeter to a more secure long-term storage location to continue processing evidence,” it said in a statement.

The vehices have reportedly already been searched by investigators, but will now undergo more detailed forensic analysis as the hunt for the killer continues.

The vehicles include two sedan cars, a Jeep Wrangler, and two SUVs that were parked outside the victims’ house on the night of the murders, according to Court TV.

Student urges university to do more to make campus feel safe

A University of Idaho student has opened up about the fear gripping her peers in the wake of the murders two weeks ago.

“There’s so much tension, there’s so much fear,” Megan Stanley told NewsNation as students returned from Thanksgiving break.

“With a couple of weeks left in the semester and finals approaching, campus should be full of students and really lively. And I feel like I’m only seeing a handful of students walking around.”

An apparel design student, Ms Stanley said some but not all of her classes have been moved online, meaning she and many others can’t finish the semester at home.

She said she and her peers “don’t really talk about” the killings because it’s so painful.

“We all know this is going on, but we don’t really talk about it because for a lot of us, it’s an emotional subject,” she said. “I didn’t know the victims personally, but a lot of my classmates who are in the Greek system did, and it’s a really hard subject to broach.”

Ms Stanley added that she wishes that more was being done by the university to make students feel safe.

“Scott Green, our president and Dr. (Blaine) Eckles, the dean of students — I’ve seen them tear up in the press conferences and everything. They’re feeling the same pain that we are,” she said.

“But I don’t feel that enough is being really done to reassure us as students or even just as a community.”

University vigils will take place today

The small college town of Moscow is preparing to hold a vigil on Wednesday in memory of the four victims murdered in a brutal knife attack on 13 November.

The University of Idaho will host the event at the Moscow campus at 5pm local time on 30 November followed by an event at the Boise campus at 6pm.

The university will “honor the memory of Ethan, Xana, Madison and Kaylee,” it says.

People will also be able to join the vigil remotely.

The vigil was originally slated to take place in the days after the murders but was postponed as the town emptied, with terrified students upping sticks and leaving as the killer or killers remain at large.

Several students returned to Moscow on Monday, after the Thanksgiving break.

911 call logs reveal sightings of blood stains, knives and ‘suspicious men’ in town of Idaho student murders

The Independent’s analysis of Moscow Police call logs has revealed several chilling complaints in the two weeks since the murders of four students.

On Wednesday 23 November, just before 9am, the owner of a laundromat in Moscow reported something alarming: “A mark on [a] column inside that looks like blood.” Though a police officer responded, they did not file any report.

It is just one of many potentially worrying but seemingly unconnected sights and sounds reported in the town since the murders.

One person reported a “suspicious vehicle in the parking lot”, along with “a person out digging in the dirt”. Officers made contact with the person, yet filed no report.

Another report said there was a person “standing in the cul-de-sac, wearing a big jacket and wearing a black ski mask”. Officers were unable to locate them. A report on Sun 20 November described “a male on the side of the road carrying a knife in front of him, stretched out”. Officers made no report.

The Independent’s Io Dodds delves into the police call logs:

Victim’s father reveals frustration with probe

Kaylee Goncalves’ father has said that he is trying to have faith in police investigating his daughter’s murder but cannot help being somewhat frustrated with the investigation so far.

Steve Goncalves told ABC News that he is feeling “a little defeated” and frustrated by the lack of information law enforcement are sharing with the family as the investigation rumbles into its third week.

“I have to assume and hope that this is all part of their plan and … they’ve got this all figured out,” he said.

“I know that there’s some really good, hard-working guys and girls that are on this case that I’ve met. And they looked me in the eyes and they told me straight-out that they’re working and they’re doing everything in their power.”

Knowing his daughter’s killer is still out there is the only feeling worse than the fact that she has died, he said.

“[The killer is] having a great life out there – and you’re just left in shambles,” he said.

“I have to have my justice. These families deserve that.

“We just have to come together as a community. Submit all those pieces of evidence … and get this guy off the streets.”

Rumours and conspiracy theories ruled out by investigators

Two weeks have now passed since four University of Idaho students were brutally stabbed to death in the small college town of Moscow – with no suspects identified, no arrests made and the murder weapon nowhere to be found.

Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20, were found murdered in the off-campus home that the three female students shared in the early hours of 13 November.

Despite multiple law enforcement agencies being drafted in to work on the case, police appear to be no closer to catching the killer, leaving students and residents of the notoriously safe town racked by fear and social media awash with speculation.

While officials are remaining tightlipped about key parts of the investigation including why they believe the murders were targeted, they have debunked several online rumours and ruled out potential ties to the killings.

This is what police have ruled out so far:

Kaylee Goncalves’ father reveals they all ‘died quickly’

The four students killed in the knife attack all died quickly, according to the grieving father of victim Kaylee Goncalves.

Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin were killed around 3am or 4am on 13 November, police said.

Their bodies were left undiscovered for several hours, with police receiving a 911 call at 11.58am to report an “unconscious individual” at the home.

Steve Goncalves told ABC News that he learned that it would have made no difference if the victims were found earlier as his daughter and her three friends had died quickly and so would not have been saved.

“Nobody suffered and nobody felt like that kind of pain,” he said.

Police insist crime scene was secured correctly

Idaho officials have insisted that the crime scene was secured correctly and that they believe in the integrity of the investigation.

On Saturday, Idaho State Police communications director Aaron Snell told Fox News Digital that investigators working on the case “have the information” but are intentionally withholding it in order to try to catch the killer.

“Ultimately, detectives on the scene have the information,” he said.

“The people that are working this case from all three agencies… they’re the best and the brightest and they have the most up-to-date resources.”

He added that officials have more information than they are releasing but cannot share it in order to protect the integrity of the investigation.

“And so if we just provide information to the public, I just don’t think that that’s going to be a wise choice,” he said, adding that keeping information “from view is going to be critical [in] trying to develop” the investigation in the future.

This includes information around why they believe the murders were targeted and a profile of the killer which is being created by behavioural experts.

As Arizona counts votes, Republicans seize on Election Day glitches

Comment

PHOENIX — Kari Lake, the Republican nominee for Arizona governor, seized on technical glitches at dozens of polling locations in a key county to call Thursday for a special legislative session to overhaul the state’s voting system, which she would have the power to do if elected.

Lake has yet to say that the election results can’t be trusted, as she did in 2020 when President Biden won the state, but her assertion that the system needs immediate change came as officials continued to count votes, a process they have warned could take up to 12 days. The results released so far show Lake, a former television news anchor, locked in a close contest with her Democratic opponent, Katie Hobbs, Arizona’s secretary of state.

Hobbs, meanwhile, wrote on Twitter: “This election will be determined by the voters, not by the volume at which an unhinged former television reporter can shout conspiracy theories.”

On Tuesday, nearly a third of polling locations throughout Maricopa County — home to Phoenix and more than 60 percent of the state’s voters — had problems with the printers that produce ballots on demand for individual voters. Starting early Tuesday morning, printers at 70 of the county’s 223 polling sites produced ballots with ink that was too light to be properly read by vote-counting machines, causing the ballots to be rejected, according to county officials. These officials had previously said that a smaller number of sites had problems.

The officials said they had yet to determine the cause of the printer problems; they said the printers passed required logic and accuracy tests ahead of Tuesday and had been used during the August primary election and the 2020 elections with the same settings, with no problems.

Voters had the options of waiting for the problems to be fixed, going to different polling locations, or dropping their ballots into secure boxes that were transferred to downtown Phoenix and counted there. Voters placed about 17,000 ballots in the secure boxes, a higher number than in previous elections, county officials said. They said all votes will be counted, that all voters who wanted to cast a ballot were allowed to do so and that the printer problems will not affect the counting of votes.

Maricopa’s problems remained a mystery Thursday to officials in Washington, who have been disappointed since Election Day by the lack of a clear explanation communicated to both voters and the agencies charged with election oversight, said two people tracking the developments. They spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press.

Kari Lake wants to upend how Arizonans vote, how their votes are counted

In a state central to widespread conspiracy theories after President Donald Trump’s loss in 2020, some Republicans leveraged the problems in Maricopa County to call for elimination of early voting and machines that count votes. Though early voting has long been popular in Arizona, ballots returned in the days leading up to Election Day and on Election Day, always take time to process, and ballots are processed in the order they are received. To post results more quickly, county leaders for weeks urged voters to return their ballots — which had more races than ever before — as quickly as possible.

Election workers were working through about 400,000 ballots in Maricopa County as of Thursday night. Officials here said they always expected the count to take as many as 12 days, though they had expected to report at least 95 percent of results by Friday. On Thursday, county officials said that it would take longer to meet that goal and that they are working through the Veterans Day federal holiday and the weekend.

Voters dropped off about 290,000 ballots on Election Day, the highest number ever released. The high volume of late drop-offs suggests many voters may have acted on instructions from Republican leaders and candidates who urged people to either vote in person or hand-deliver early ballots at polling locations.

Some Republicans claimed, without evidence, that the drip-drip release of results — which happens during every election here — suggested county officials wanted to delay what they asserted would be a win by Lake, and perhaps other Republican candidates.

Officials in Pima County, home to Tucson, swatted away such allegations. Gabriella Cázares-Kelly, the county recorder, said it was taking time to process the high volume of early ballots that didn’t arrive until Election Day. “We are following the law,” she said.

Maricopa County Supervisor Bill Gates (R) noted that it routinely takes days to complete tabulation in the county, a pattern that has recently drawn national attention because of Arizona’s swing-state status and the tight margins in statewide contests. Gates, who twice ran the state GOP’s Election Day integrity efforts, said Lake might not be familiar with the county’s tabulation process.

“Quite frankly, it is offensive for Kari Lake to say these people behind me are slow rolling when they’re working 14 to 18 hours,” he said, gripping a lectern at times during a 45-minute news conference. “I really hope this is the end of that now. We can be patient and respect the results.”

Gates said it is important that Arizonans don’t think “that we’re picking and choosing which ballots to tabulate. We use an accounting concept: first in, first out.”

Researchers examining attempts on social media to delegitimize election results said fraud narratives had gotten less traction in the immediate aftermath of the vote. But others warned that a prolonged count in Arizona could create an opportunity for misleading narratives to take hold or for rogue actors to try to disrupt the process.

Most immediately, Republican candidates and their allies in Arizona seized on the mechanical issues to prime the public for sweeping legislative changes. Lake ran on a platform during the primary election to count millions of votes not by machines, but by hand, a method that election experts say is less accurate. She favors “one-day voting,” where ballots are cast in assigned precincts. Arizona allows people to vote by mail, and in Maricopa County, they can vote at any voting location.

Lake was notably vaguer in the final days of campaigning about her plans for electoral reform.

At a stop southeast of Phoenix on the Sunday before Election Day, she told reporters simply that she planned to “work with our wonderful lawmakers, and we’ll come up with great laws that secure the vote.”

Her most hard-line allies also seemed to be equivocating. Wendy Rogers, a far-right state senator who has pushed for “decertification” of the 2020 election, a process that experts say is not possible under state or federal law, refused to commit to a system that would only allow voting on a single day — an idea that has been pushed by far-right activists here. When asked at the same event whether she favored such a proposal, she replied, “Essentially.”

But the problems in Maricopa County gave Lake and her supporters a fresh target for their ire. In an appearance on a radio show hosted by Charlie Kirk, the founder and president of Phoenix-based Turning Point USA, Lake called for a “task force to investigate what went wrong, how these anomalies happened.”

“That’s either maladministration, incompetency, we don’t know what it is,” she added.

Kirk went further, arguing without evidence, “I believe it was a traffic jam by design.”

But that belief wasn’t echoed by Lake, who had a delicate dance to pull off — railing against the administration of an election that, she told her supporters, will place her in the governor’s office.

“It’s a messed-up election system,” she said. “We knew we had to trudge through it to get to victory.”

That message left fellow Republican candidates in a difficult position. Other campaigns took their cues from Lake about how to respond to the uncertainty in the days after the election, according to a Republican familiar with the discussions. Blake Masters, the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in Arizona, suggested on Tuesday that something nefarious was occurring, but he fell mostly silent on social media as Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) gained an edge over him in incomplete results.

A fundraising appeal from Masters’s campaign on Thursday did not allege impropriety but argued that “some of the issues we’ve see occur during this election are troubling.” It added, “We’re expecting a contested road forward and legal battles to come.”

Abraham Hamadeh, the Republican nominee for attorney general, attacked Maricopa County but did not argue that the vote, which was showing him neck-and-neck with Democrat Kris Mayes, was fraudulent.

The exception was Mark Finchem, the GOP candidate for secretary of state, who was trailing Democrat Adrian Fontes in preliminary results. Finchem speculated on Twitter that Fontes and other Democrats could be “in the back room with ballots.” Fontes fired back that he was “having coffee with an old friend,” adding, “Stop with this conspiracy garbage.”

More broadly, the state’s top Democratic candidates urged patience, with Hobbs writing on Twitter, “Accurate election results take time.” Kelly thanked his supporters on social media, writing, “I’m confident we’re going to win. But we don’t have the final results yet.”

Lake was holed up Wednesday in meetings with advisers, outside allies and people who may ultimately serve in her administration. Among them was Floyd Brown, a longtime conservative operative and founder of the news and opinion website the Western Journal, according to two people familiar with the discussions, one of whom said it was an advisory meeting. They spoke on the condition of anonymity to talk about private discussions. Brown, who did not respond to a request for comment, suggested on social media that the mechanical issues in Maricopa County were an “effort to stop” Lake.

Lake also met with Eileen Klein, the former chief of staff for former Arizona governor Jan Brewer, a Republican; Danny Seiden, who heads the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and previously worked for Gov. Doug Ducey (R); and Tyler Bowyer, chief operating officer of the political arm of Kirk’s Turning Point USA. None commented on the meetings.

Maricopa officials said that while they did not yet know the underlying cause of the faint printing on some ballots, the problem appeared to be fixed by late Tuesday afternoon when technicians changed a setting to allow for a heavier kind of paper.

Printers like those used by the county contain “fusers” — heated rollers that melt toner and make it stick to paper. Different weights of paper require different temperatures for the toner to adhere properly.

The county has about 760 printers for printing ballots on demand, according to Megan Gilbertson, communications director for the county’s elections department. About 600 of those were made by Oki, a corporation headquartered in Japan, which discontinued all sales of its printers in the United States in March 2021. Oki has said it continues to supply parts, software updates and other services. Gilbertson said those printers are the ones that had problems.

“It is standard practice to continue to use equipment if an organization can continue to maintain it,” Gilbertson said. Dennie K. Kawahara, the president and chief executive of Oki Data Americas, said in an email that the firm had received no inquiries or customer service requests relating to the problem in Maricopa County. “The printers were tested prior to the election and were working fine,” Kawahara wrote.

Maricopa’s 2022 elections plan said each of the county’s 223 polling places would have two or three printers and that this would provide enough capacity in case some malfunctioned.

Gilbertson said each ballot printer was linked only to a laptop and that they were not connected to one another or to the internet. The printers’ settings could only be changed manually and changes require a password, she said.
