Trump settles lawsuit with protesters over alleged 2015 security scuffle

Comment

Former president Donald Trump settled a lawsuit Wednesday, just days ahead of the trial of a lawsuit filed by protesters who alleged they were manhandled by his security personnel outside Trump Tower in New York in 2015.

The details of the settlement have not been made public, but jury selection for a civil trial presided over by Bronx Judge Doris Gonzalez had been underway, according to court documents.

In a brief, joint statement announcing the settlement, Trump and the protesters said, “The parties all agree that the plaintiffs in the action, and all people, have a right to engage in peaceful protest on public sidewalks.”

The suit was brought by five New Yorkers of Mexican descent, led by Efrain Galicia, who alleged that Trump’s bodyguards engaged in a scuffle with them as they demonstrated outside the building on Sept. 3, 2015, over anti-Mexican comments Trump made during his presidential campaign.

The case sought punitive damages after alleging that Trump bodyguard Keith Schiller and others punched one of the men in the head while trying to grab a sign that read, “Make America Racist Again!” Schiller has previously said that he was simply trying to make space on the sidewalk and that he struck the protester only after the man grabbed him from behind.

“Plaintiffs are proud to have settled their claims and to have obtained written recognition by Donald Trump of their right to protest on the public sidewalk,” their attorney, Benjamin Dictor, told The Washington Post in a statement Thursday.

“Powerful men may put their names on buildings, but the sidewalk will always belong to the people,” Dictor added.

Trump was a defendant in the suit, being named along with the Trump Organization, his presidential campaign and several security people, according to court documents.

In 2019, Gonzalez said Trump’s testimony was “indispensable” to the trial and ordered the then-president to sit for videotaped testimony. In a 2021 deposition transcript, Trump said Schiller “did nothing wrong,” and, when asked about details of the fray, Trump said he “didn’t know about it.”

Jury hears opening statements in Trump Organization’s criminal trial

Trump lawyer Alina Habba said in a statement, “Although we were eager to proceed to trial to demonstrate the frivolousness of this case, the parties were ultimately able to come to an amicable resolution. We are very pleased with this outcome and are happy to finally put this matter to rest once and for all.”

Trump lawyers saw Clarence Thomas as key to stop Biden electoral count, emails show

The former president is involved in a handful of other legal cases, including over government documents found at his Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida and allegations that he tried to interfere with Georgia’s electoral count in 2020. He also faces investigations tied to the role he played ahead of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

In May, the Trump Organization and presidential inaugural committee agreed to pay D.C. $750,000 to settle a lawsuit the city had filed, alleging that the organizations had misused nonprofit funds to benefit the former president and his family.

Separately, his namesake organization, including its payroll-processing subsidiary, the Trump Payroll Corporation, is on trial in New York Supreme Court on charges of an alleged scheme to defraud, conspiracy, criminal tax fraud and falsifying business records.

Trump and three of his adult children who have served as executives at the company have not been charged personally. The criminal trial began last week and could last up to six weeks.

Michigan State suspends 4 players as school police investigate scuffle after Wolverines defeat Spartans

CNN
 —

Four Michigan State University football players have been suspended while school police investigate a scuffle in a stadium tunnel after the No. 4 University of Michigan Wolverines defeated the unranked Michigan State Spartans 29-7 on Saturday.

Michigan State Head Coach Mel Tucker announced in a statement that the players have been suspended from the team after “reviewing the disturbing electronic evidence” of the altercation. The suspensions will be in effect until investigations of the incident are complete, Tucker said.

A video posted on Twitter from The Detroit News showed several Spartan players in an altercation with a Wolverine player in the tunnel at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor.

Michigan football Head Coach Jim Harbaugh said two of his players were “assaulted,” and one of them may have a broken nose.

“I saw the one video, the 10 on one, it’s … pretty bad,” Harbaugh said.

“What happened after the game is completely unacceptable,” Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel said.

School police from both universities are jointly investigating the incident. In his statement on player suspensions, Tucker said Michigan State will continue to evaluate “additional student-athlete participation in the altercations and contributing factors.”

Michigan State Vice President and Athletics Director Alan Haller called the evidence “alarming,” adding that “the behavior we reviewed was both uncharacteristic of our football program and unacceptable.”

Manuel said he has spoken with Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren, and “he is looking into it.”

“Police are also looking into it, and it’s because they’ve seen the video,” Manuel said. “We will leave it in their hands.”

CNN has reached out to the Big Ten for comment.

Michigan State President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. apologized to Michigan, calling the incident “unacceptable behavior.”

“I’m extremely saddened by this incident and the unacceptable behavior depicted by members of our football program,” Stanley said in a statement.

“On behalf of Michigan State University, my heartfelt apology to the University of Michigan and the student athletes who were injured. There is no provocation that could justify the behavior we are seeing on the videos. Rivalries can be intense but should never be violent.”

Tucker addressed the scuffle on Twitter.

“As Spartans our program has a responsibility to uphold the highest level of sportsmanship,” Tucker tweeted Sunday.

“While emotions were very high at the conclusion of our rivalry game at Michigan Stadium, there is no excuse for behavior that puts our team or our opponents at risk.”

MSU’s president said “Coach Tucker will be holding the players involved responsible, and our football team and university will be cooperating with all related investigations by law enforcement and the Big Ten Conference.”

The two schools released a joint statement saying, “The University of Michigan Police, in partnership with Michigan State University Police, Michigan Athletics and Michigan football, is actively reviewing footage and investigating the postgame incident.”

“Situations like these, and the safety of the community, are taken very seriously,” the statement said.

The cross-state schools have had a storied rivalry for generations.

“But this is not how we should interact after a game,” said Manuel, Michigan’s athletic director. “It’s completely and utterly unacceptable. … This is not what a rivalry should be about.”

Caleb Martin apologizes to Christian Koloko for scuffle

Miami Heat small forward Caleb Martin said he called Toronto Raptors forward Christian Koloko to apologize and promised him a future dinner after their scuffle Saturday.

Martin was suspended by the NBA for Monday’s game, a 98-90 Heat loss, after the league determined he was the instigator in the scuffle that spilled into the baseline seats near the Miami bench two nights earlier.

Martin said he accepted his sanction, and said his only issue with the penalties handed out during the game and from the league Sunday was that Koloko paid too high a price.

“I don’t think that Christian should have gotten thrown out or ejected anyways. He did what he had to do,” Martin said Monday.

Both Martin and Koloko were whistled for technical fouls and ejected from Saturday’s game. Koloko was fined $15,000 for grabbing Martin during the altercation.

Heat rookie Nikola Jovic, who was found to have left the bench area during the incident, also was suspended for Monday’s game.

Martin fouled Koloko as the two jostled for position on a rebound early in the third quarter, with the Raptors rookie ending up on the ground. Martin walked toward him, Koloko bounced up quickly, tempers flared and Martin then drove Koloko backward into the seats — the ones taking the brunt of the impact not occupied by any fans at that time. There were some fans in nearby seats who had some contact with those involved in the scrum.

Buccaneers vs Saints: Tom Brady throws tablet to ground, involved in scuffle in nervy Tampa Bay win

Four of those seven losses have come since Brady arrived at Tampa Bay, and those three years of frustration seemed to weigh on the seven-time Super Bowl winner.
With 10:48 remaining in the third quarter and trailing the Saints 3-0, Brady took out his anger on the sidelines by throwing a Microsoft tablet to the ground.

His frustrations simmered over into the fourth quarter and, after a third-down incomplete pass with the score tied 3-3, he came to blows with New Orleans cornerback Marshon Lattimore. Buccaneers running back Leonard Fournette and wide receiver Mike Evans intervened, sparking a skirmish that eventually led to the ejections of Lattimore and Evans.

Evans was later suspended for one game without pay by the NFL on Monday for “violations of unnecessary roughness and unsportsmanlike conduct.”

While the suspension will not be welcome news to Tampa Bay, the incidents seemed to galvanize the Bucs on Sunday as Brady connected with wide receiver Breshad Perriman for a 28-yard touchdown in the team’s next series to put Tampa Bay up 10-3.

After a 47-yard Ryan Succop field goal to extend the lead with 5:50 left in the game, the Bucs sealed it when Mike Edwards picked off Saints QB Jameis Winston and returned it 68 yards for a touchdown.

“It’s an emotional game,” Brady told reporters afterwards. “A little bit of execution helps all the way around. I thought the defense played well again and the offensive line fought hard.

“It’s a really tough team, really well coached — a team we really struggle with, so it feels good to win.”

“And sorry for breaking that tablet,” he added on later on Twitter. “I think that’s gonna be another Twitter meme or something like that.”

It had been a closely fought game, dominated by both teams’ respective defenses as New Orleans held Brady to 14/24 passing with 142 yards and shut Tampa Bay out until a field goal from Ryan Succop tied the scores at 3-3 late in the third quarter.

But, after the fight and Perriman’s touchdown, momentum swung towards the Bucs.

“We lost a good player and they lost a good player. It was a physical ballgame,” Tampa Bay coach Todd Bowles said, according to ESPN. “I don’t know if it was a turning point … It could have gone either way. We knew we had to make some plays.”

Although the Saints had several chances late in the game, the Tampa Bay defense held firm, intercepting Winston three times — including the game-sealing pick-six — in the last 12 minutes.

New Orleans secured a touchdown of its own through a Winston pass to Michael Thomas with 1:08 remaining, but it was too late as the Bucs held on to seal their first regular season win over the Saints since September 2018, snapping the seven-game losing streak.

The Bucs remain atop the NFC South with a 2-0 record and will host Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

A wild scuffle broke out after a men’s college basketball game between North Dakota State and Oral Roberts on Thursday night after the Bison topped the Golden Eagles 77-59.

The situation occurred following the final play of the game.

North Dakota State had the Summit League matchup already in the bag when Bison guard Maleeck Harden-Hayes stole the ball from Golden Eagles guard Max Abmas. Harden-Hayes would go up for the dunk just after the final whistle.

Bison players were celebrating after the dunk but would go into the handshake line on the sideline. As players were shaking hands, Oral Roberts head coach Paul Mills and North Dakota State head coach Dave Richman were seen exchanging words as well.

A lot of pushing and shoving and trash talking ensued. Golden Eagles player Elijah Lufile had to be held back and dragged down to be stopped from escalating matters further.

“You see the emotions of the game. You saw two teams playing until the end and some things spilled over,” Richman said after the game, via InForum. “That’s not anything that I want this program to be a part of. There are situations that are going to be learning experiences for myself and our group as we move forward.

NO. 3 ARIZONA ROLLS IN SECOND HALF, TOPS OREGON STATE

“Anything from our end, I will apologize to Oral Roberts and coach Mills. But I also asked our guys to play until the end and we played to the end tonight.”

Mills also commented on the incident in a tweet.

“I am very saddened about what transpired at the conclusion of our game tonight v NDSU. ORU nor NDSU want to be represented in a negative light. Dave Richman & I have spoken & I have the utmost respect for the Bison program. Congratulations to the Bison on a dominant performance,” he wrote.

Jonathan Allen, Daron Payne involved in sideline scuffle during Washington-Cowboys Sunday night game

Things did not go very well for the Washington Football Team on “Sunday Night Football.” Washington didn’t put up much of a fight on the field in its 56-14 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. But the Football Team did battle among themselves on the sideline.

During the NBC broadcast, defensive linemen Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne were spotted having some sort of argument. Payne pointedly put one of his fingers into Allen’s face, seemingly lecturing his teammate. That’s when Allen snapped, batted Payne’s finger away, and then took a swing at his defensive linemate.

Allen and Payne were previously college teammates at Alabama. Washington drafted each of them in the first round, making Allen the No. 17 overall pick in 2017 and Payne the No. 13 pick in 2018. They have combined to be one of the better interior defensive line pairings in the NFL, though the defense overall has been far less effective this season than it was a year ago.

Perhaps the frustrations with how that defense is performing — not just tonight, but all year — finally boiled over. Or perhaps there’s some other explanation. Playing on the same team and in the same position group as somebody for a long period of time could bring up any number of problems, of course. Whatever the issue, Washington would surely prefer that the two players settle it in some way other than sideline fisticuffs.

LeBron James ejected: A strike to Pistons’ Isaiah Stewart’s face leads to scuffle

The ejection is only the second in James’ career — the first coming in 2017 for comments made to a referee.

Sunday’s altercation occurred with 9:18 remaining in the third quarter and the Lakers trailing 78-66 in Detroit. As a free throw was being attempted, James swung his arm backward while boxing out for a rebound, hitting Stewart.

The foul led to a prolonged game stoppage while Stewart, with blood coming down his face, had to be held back by Detroit coaches and players as he tried to confront James on several occasions. Stewart was also ejected from the game.

The Lakers would go on to win 121-116.

Both James and Stewart did not speak to the media postgame. CNN has reached out to the National Basketball Association (NBA) and Lakers for comment.

Lakers teammate Anthony Davis came to the defense of James after the game, saying that James isn’t a “dirty guy” and that he wasn’t sure why Stewart reacted the way he did.

“I’ve never, in 10 years, seen a player try to do that as long as I’ve been playing, at least in basketball. It’s uncalled for. You got a cut above your eye, accidental — like, it wasn’t on purpose. And we weren’t going to allow him to keep charging our brother like that,” Davis said.

Lakers head coach Frank Vogel said he spoke to James in the locker room after the game.

“Yeah, that’s really something that should stay in the locker room,” Vogel said. “I mean, I talked to him, yup, but I’m not going to disclose what his message was.”

Stewart was “upset,” Pistons coach Dwane Casey said after the game.

“I told him, ‘Don’t let this define who you are. It doesn’t define your game whatsoever.’ I felt for the young man because he’s such a competitor and he plays so hard. He’s a great kid but he felt like he got cheap-shotted across his brow and on the street, it would be a different story,” Casey said.
