49ers’ wide receivers relish chance to step up in Deebo Samuel’s absence

The 49ers will need to plan for at least the next three games without Deebo Samuel, and Kyle Shanahan is confident that the wide receivers group will step up in the absence of the injury All-Pro.

Shanahan was relieved that Samuel suffered a less serious ankle sprain and MCL injury than originally thought. The “wide back” is expected to be out of action for “three-ish” weeks, which means he could return for Week 18 when the 49ers host Arizona Cardinals in the regular-season finale.

Until then Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings, Ray-Ray McCloud and Danny Gray will need to fill the void.

“I think the other guys are more than ready,” Shanahan said Tuesday. “I think those guys love the opportunity. They’re always wanting to be out there more. They’re mad I’m not in five wides every play, so those guys relish this.”

The 49ers’ group of wideouts had to step up without both Samuel and Jennings in Week 8 when both were dealing with hamstring injuries. Aiyuk was Jimmy Garoppolo’s top receiver, hauling in all six of his targets for 81 yards and a touchdown reception.

Christian McCaffrey also was a huge part of the offense’s dominance over the Los Angeles Rams in Week 8, throwing a touchdown pass, catching a touchdown reception and rushing for a touchdown.

“I know they did a hell of a job versus the Rams,” Shanahan said. “Even that week we thought we were going to get Jauan, we ended up not getting him towards the end of the week and a number of guys had to step up, so our guys will be ready on Thursday.”

Gray finally caught his first pass as an NFL wide receiver in Week 14 and Shanahan expects to see more of that from the rookie. Shanahan has previously spoken about the need of the Southern Methodist product to be more consistent and it seems, Gray has been progressing.

“I think Danny has gotten the urgency that he’s had, he has really been picking it up here in these last six weeks,” Shanahan said. “His play has gotten a lot better, so we felt it’s a matter of time where he can help us out there and he’s doing things the right way and he’s gone in the game a hair more.”

The 49ers also could look to work in McCloud in a similar fashion as Samuel. While McCloud is not the same body-type as Samuel, the five-year NFL veteran plays as if he is. A standout on special teams, the 26-year-old is ready for a bigger role.

“Yeah, you can use them similarly,” Shanahan said. “They’re definitely different bodies, but don’t tell Ray-Ray that. He gets extremely offended. If you put Deebo in any run and you tell him that he can only do these, but not that one, you’re going to have to prepare or make time for an hour meeting with him later, because he’s going to convince you otherwise.

“And that’s why he has been such a good football player his whole career. Ray-Ray is a bulldog out there and he doesn’t think about his size.”

Samuel is hard to replace, but Shanahan is confident the 49ers have the personnel to hold down the fort for a few weeks.

Kevin Samuels’ Cause Of Death Determined To Be Hypertension: Report

Kevin Samuels’ cause of death was reportedly due to hypertension.

Kevin Samuels’ death was “a result of hypertension,” and has been classified as one of natural causes, the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office has determined, according to TMZ. The polarizing YouTuber passed away at 57, back in May.

“Evidence of hypertension includes a heart whose chambers are thicker than normal,” the Medical Examiner’s report states, adding that Samuels was taking Atenolol, a drug used to treat hypertension.

News of Samuels’ death was first reported by TMZ shortly after his passing, causing his mother, Beverly Samuels-Burch, to learn about her son’s death from social media.

“That was a terrible thing for social media to put that out. I didn’t even know. I hadn’t even been notified,” she said, according to NBC News. “All I’m doing is requesting that people pray for us.”

Due to the controversial nature of his relationship advice, many took Samuels’ death as a chance to criticize the late YouTuber, something T.I. called people out for on social media.

“The shit is fucking a travesty of justice,” the rapper argued at the time. “I can’t stand it, I can’t stand it. I ain’t gon’ let y’all bully this dead man. We gon’ let this man rest in peace.”

The Raiders waived cornerback Stanford Samuels III, the team announced Monday.

Samuels had signed with the Raiders on May 16.

He entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Florida State, signing with the Packers in 2020. The Packers waived him out of the preseason but re-signed him to the practice squad the following day.

Samuels saw action on 13 defensive snaps and 22 on special teams in two games as a rookie. That is his only NFL experience.

The Packers cut him in training camp last summer, and he spent a few days on the Bears’ practice squad late last season.

Samuels, 23, has three career tackles.

But he said: “We have a great relationship. We’ve known each other since fourth grade.”

The couple shares a daughter, born in 2001.

Kevin Samuels, a Polarizing YouTube Personality, Dies at 57

Kevin Samuels, a YouTube and Instagram personality whose blunt lifestyle advice aimed at Black men and women drew a legion of admiring followers and a chorus of detractors who condemned his views as outdated and cruel, died on Thursday in Atlanta. He was 57.

His death was announced by two friends and fellow YouTube personalities, Dennis Spurling and Melanie King. Mr. Spurling, who is also a lawyer, identified himself as a family spokesman in an Instagram post.

The Atlanta police said he was found unresponsive on the floor of his apartment. No cause was cited.

Describing himself as an image consultant, Mr. Samuels had transformed in recent years from a personal stylist into a social media celebrity who built his following on an image of plain-spoken, hypermasculine authority, usually wearing a finely tailored suit. The approach brought him more than a million followers on both YouTube and Instagram, and many of his supporters viewed him as taking courageous stands for what they called traditional values.

In his videos and posts, Mr. Samuels urged his followers to adhere to rigid gender roles; he largely evaluated women for their appearance and youth, men for their assertiveness and money. He criticized women whom he saw as too career-focused, and asked questions suggesting women’s interest in men was based mostly on their income: “How much do you charge for submission?”

The messages were repugnant to many, especially women, who said his views were misogynistic and promoted a brand of masculinity that harmed the men who listened to him. More than 30,000 people signed an online petition asking YouTube and Instagram to remove Mr. Samuels, saying he had “galvanized a community of men of all races and nationalities in the outspoken hatred of women.”

On Thursday, when word of his death first surfaced, Mr. Samuels became one of the leading topics on Twitter, with many of the most amplified voices speaking out against him.

“Kevin Samuels has basically made a profit and has made his profile consistently perpetuating harmful stereotypes about Black men and women,” Ernest Owens, a journalist, said on Friday, adding that “a lot of his rhetoric and commentary was rooted in misogyny.”

The comments on Mr. Samuels’s YouTube and Instagram videos revealed a community, mostly but not entirely composed of men, who looked up to him. One commenter responded to a recent video by calling Mr. Samuels an “inspiration” to Black men around the world, and thousands of others indicated support for the comment.

Kevin Samuels was born on March 13, 1965, according to Mr. Spurling, who said he was survived by his mother and a daughter.

Mr. Samuels had an early interest in fashion, telling The Oklahoma Gazette in 2016 that as a child he “laid out my pajamas and made sure they were pressed.” He credited his mother with piquing that interest.

He attended the University of Oklahoma, where he studied chemical engineering, according to his LinkedIn page. He had a career in marketing before leaving the industry in 2013 and pivoting to his own image consulting firm. An early business went by the name Made Men Image Consulting.

In the early years there was little of the sharp-tongued content that would later launch him to stardom, as he focused initially on personal fashion and self-improvement for professionals.

“People can expect to receive high-level fashion and style ideas distilled down to the practical level that the average, everyday man and woman needs, finds useful and can immediately act upon,” Mr. Samuels told Uncovering Oklahoma in 2016.

But he later discovered a formula that would help his following skyrocket, based on harsh assessments of modern women and the dynamics of dating and relationships. Many of his videos, seeking to explain why people were not in relationships, centered on the inherent value of men and women, based on a set of traditional criteria.

In 2020, in one of his first viral hits, a video that assessed a woman as “average at best” received millions of views. He referred to women over 35 as “leftovers,” echoing a line he claimed was used by the Chinese Communist Party.

“If you have made it to 35 and you are unmarried, you are a leftover woman,” he said. “You are what is left. Men know that there is something likely wrong with you. Whether you want to hear it or not, I’m going to go there with you. I’m telling you the truth that you don’t want to hear.”

On social media, Mr. Samuels outlined a view of relationships that put men in a dominant position and said women should accept infidelity by men but not be unfaithful themselves.

“Successful men cheat,” he recently wrote on Instagram. “Either you will deal with it or not.”

The approach appeared to be lucrative. In addition to whatever revenue he accrued from his followings on Instagram and YouTube, as of Friday afternoon more than 1,700 people had paid between $5 and $20 per month for his newsletter.

New twists and turns in Deebo Samuel’s SF 49ers trade request

A couple new chapters were added to the trade saga of San Francisco 49ers star Deebo Samuel over the weekend.

The team’s best offensive player requested a trade from the organization on Wednesday, April 20, shortly after deleting all connections to the Niners from his social media pages.

Then on Saturday, Samuel was captured on video partying at a club in Los Angeles. As the night progressed, bottle service arrived with a big lit-up sign that read “DEEBO IS STAYING 49ERS.” The person filming then cuts to Samuel himself, who smiles, and then gestures to say “no.”

Some interpreted the video as a sure sign that Samuel is committed to leaving the Niners, but his gesture could just as easily be interpreted as a signal that no decision has been explicitly made.

The second bit of Samuel news came from his own social media. In a now-deleted post on his Instagram Stories, he revealed a text exchange with Seahawks safety Jamal Adams, who tried to offer some encouraging words after Samuel received angry responses to his trade request from some Niners fans. Samuel then outright insulted Adams, responding that his situation was different from the safety’s — who also publicly requested a trade — because he actually “carried” his team to the playoffs. The Seahawks did not make the playoffs this past season, as they finished last in the NFC West at 7-10.

This perhaps gives us more insight into Samuel’s mentality at the moment, as it indicates how much he values himself as a player. He believes he’s capable of carrying a team to the postseason, but apparently is not interested in using those capabilities to carry — his words, not mine — the Niners anymore, meaning the media will now be more likely to use the word “disgruntled” to describe him from here on out.

Samuel was an All-Pro player last season. He led the league with 18.2 yards per catch and 6.2 yards per carry while scoring a combined 14 touchdowns. His 1,770 yards from scrimmage ranked third in the league, and he rushed for eight touchdowns, which is an NFL single-season record for a receiver.

If the Niners are committed to making a move in response to Samuel’s trade request, their time is running out. The 2022 NFL Draft, where the team could at least find some semblance of a Samuel replacement or heir apparent, starts on Thursday.

Every once in a while, sports provides the rare moment where there is no possible negative reaction. Such was the case Sunday when Deebo Samuel appeared on the Nickelodeon broadcast for an interview with rapper Young Dylan.

First of all, if the whole rapping thing doesn’t work out, Young Dylan might want to study broadcast journalism when he reaches college age. The 12-year-old has the makings of a seasoned pro on the sidelines.

Nickelodeon has broadcast playoff games each of the past two seasons, adding a kid-centric mix to the games that has even won over some adults. With moments like this, it’s not hard to see why.
