Joaquin Phoenix had to leave set during Her orgasm sequence

If Joaquin Phoenix’s turn in 2013’s Her as a man smitten by his virtual assistant teaches anything, it’s this: the only thing more fearsome than a haunted Alexa is a horny one. According to Scarlett Johansson (who voiced Samantha, the AI who Phoenix’s character Theodore falls in love with), filming a simulated sex scene between the odd duo was “so gross” that Phoenix fled the set.

During a conversation with Dax Shepard and Monica Padman’s “Armchair Expert” podcast, Johansson recalls Phoenix struggling to keep it together after an initial take of the scene, which involves Samantha virtually orgasming while Theodore has intercourse with a sex surrogate. It’s an uncomfortable scene to watch—and apparently, even more uncomfortable to shoot.

“We tried to get through one take, and he was, like, losing it,” Johansson says of her co-star. “He left the studio. He needed a break.”

Phoenix’s discomfort proved more than worthwhile— in 2013, Her won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and was nominated for Best Picture. Directed by Spike Jonze, the film ranks easily among Phoenix’s best performances, despite the apparently discomforting cost of filming.

Although the virtual tryst clearly marked a trying time for Phoenix, Johansson didn’t much care for hearing her own fake climax either (a bad sign for anyone dreaming of a ScarJo-led When Harry Met Sally reboot.)

“You don’t want to hear your voice ever,” she says. “You definitely don’t want to hear what you sound like having an orgasm. You definitely don’t want to hear what you sound like having a fake orgasm — ew.”

“It’s so gross,” Johansson shudders. “It was so bizarre.” Gross and bizarre— now that’s romance!

‘Full Frontal with Samantha Bee’ is canceled by TBS after 7 seasons

Comment

After seven seasons of bold jokes and witty monologues, the Emmy-nominated late-night show “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee” was canceled Monday by TBS.

The decision came as a result of a “new programming strategy,” according to a TBS spokesperson. “We are proud to have been the home to ‘Full Frontal with Samantha Bee’ and thank Sam, and the rest of the Emmy-nominated team, for their groundbreaking work.”

The Twitter account for “Full Frontal” confirmed the decision Monday afternoon.

“We’re so thankful for our loyal audience, our amazing team, and that we got to annoy the right people every week—that there wasn’t wrestling or baseball or a very special episode of Big Bang,” the tweet read, poking fun at the network events for which the show had been preempted throughout its run.

“Full Frontal,” which centered the voice of one of the few women in late-night comedy, was known for its incisive political commentary. When President Donald Trump did not attend the White House correspondents’ dinner in 2017, Bee created her own counterprogramming called “Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner” that aired as a special the same night. She also made controversial news of her own in 2018, when she insulted Ivanka Trump using a charged expletive; the show remained in the news cycle for weeks afterward and both Bee and TBS eventually issued an apology. And throughout her series, Bee has also been a consistent advocate for abortion rights, using “Full Frontal” to draw attention to policies and politicians limiting access to the procedure.

Samantha Bee on Ivanka Trump comments: ‘I hate that this distracted from more important issues’

“It can be really difficult” to be an avid news consumer, Bee said in a 2019 phone interview with The Washington Post. But she viewed it as her job to “carve a comedic path through it.”

The cancellation of “Full Frontal” follows a trend of late-night show cutbacks: TBS and Conan O’Brien parted ways last year, NBC and Lilly Singh ended their partnership, and James Corden is leaving “The Late Late Show” in 2023.

Samantha Bee isn’t covering antiabortion laws because she’s a woman. It’s because laughter makes a statement.

“Bee made television history in the late night space, paving the way for female voices in what has traditionally been, and continues to be a male dominated landscape,” a representative for Bee told The Washington Post in a statement Monday. The show “consistently broke barriers with Sam and her team boldly using political satire to entertain, inform and empower viewers, while embracing critically underrepresented stories, particularly about women.”

But with just “The Amber Ruffin Show” as the sole female voice in the late-night show circulation, there’s a serious lack of gender diversity in the late-night circuit, and some of Bee’s work will be hard to replicate, especially as the United States reckons with the overturning of Roe v. Wade. In that same 2019 interview with The Post, Bee said she’d spend hours defending abortion “regardless” of her gender.

“I don’t,” she said, “feel a different responsibility because I’m the last woman standing.”

Samantha Bee Canceled: ‘Full Frontal’ Ending

Samantha Bee’s “Full Frontal” is getting a kick in the rear from Warner Bros. Discovery.

The show, which became a signature program for the large cable network TBS, “will not return to the network in the fall,” according to a statement from Bee’s representatives.

“As we continue to shape our new programming strategy, we’ve made some difficult, business-based decisions,” TBS said in a statement. “We are proud to have been the home to ‘Full Frontal With Samantha Bee’ and thank Sam, and the rest of the Emmy-nominated team for their groundbreaking work. We celebrate this extraordinarily talented cast and crew and look forward to exploring new opportunities to work with them in the future.”

Over the course of seven seasons, Bee’s “Full Frontal” brought an aggressive and saucy voice to TV’s late-night arena, and one of the few programs led by a female point-of-view. Bee captured attention with outrageous humor and monologues that pushed the usually genial cable network to embrace hefty amounts of profanity and tackle political issues that are often polarizing. In 2018, the show became part of the news cycle when Bee used a charged epithet that refers to a part of the female anatomy to insult President Donald Trump’s daughter, Ivanka. Advertisers pulled back commercial support, for a time.

“We do a show to please ourselves,” Bee told Variety during an interview in 2016. “This gives us an opportunity to say the things we want in the exact way we want to say them.” In the process, her viewers get a few laughs, but also can exorcise their frustrations with modern politics and culture. When Bee watches TV, she says, “I like a firm hand to take me somewhere. I think that’s what we do with the show — provide a firm hand. You might not like where it takes you, and that’s OK, too.” She hopes viewers “walk away with comedy first, and then the catharsis after.”

The end of her show will come as TV continues to trim back its late-night antics. WarnerMedia decided to end its long-running “Conan” late-night program on TBS with Conan O’Brien in June of last year. NBC and the late-night host Lilly Singh, a digital entertainment influencer who had launched a new show on the network in the wee hours of the morning, decided to part ways last year. Comedy Central, which once boasted three different late-night shows, now only has one, “The Daily Show,” on regularly during weeknights. Showtime’s “Desus & Mero,” a weekly humor showcase, isn’t returning to Showtime thanks to a fallout between its hosts. And CBS is mulling cheaper alternatives to replace James Corden when he leaves “The Late Late Show” in early 2023.

The end of “Full Frontal” comes as Warner Bros. Discovery has been cutting back on its content spend for big cable networks like TBS and TNT. To be sure, the outlets continue to feature movies and have added more nights of sports, thanks to a recent rights deal struck between Warner Bros. Discovery and the NHL. But TBS has been cutting back on scripted series, with shows such as “Chad” and “The Last O.G.” scrapped in recent weeks. Brett Weitz, general manager of TBS, TNT and TruTV, left the company in May after the cable networks were consolidated under the aegis of Warner Bros. Discovery executive Kathleen Finch. Weitz had been a strong backer of “Full Frontal.”

“Full Frontal” presaged a new parade of weekly late-night humor shows that aimed at smaller niches rather than a broader crowd. Once Bee’s program gained traction, BET tried a similar showcase for Robin Thede — produced by the same company behind Bee. Comedy Central has been trying a weekly program led by Charlamagne Tha God.

Bee often surprised viewers by traveling to distant locales, landing interviews with interesting analysts, and giving time to new voices like Amy Hoggart, Mike Rubens and Ashely Nicole Black. One of her funniest segments centered on her trying to procure a costume of NRA mascot Eddie the Eagle — and found it more difficult than buying firearms. “Full Frontal” was recently nominated for an Emmy in the category of Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction or Reality Series.

Astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti drops stunning lunar eclipse photos

New images reveal the recent lunar eclipse as seen from the International Space Station.

European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti took to Twitter on Monday to share three stunning new photographs of space.

The images display the recent lunar eclipse – also known as a “Blood Moon” – that occurred on May 15 from three different vantage points.

In one of the photos, Earth’s glowing blue atmosphere could be seen in the background.

Also seen clearly in all three images are the wings of the International Space Station (ISS) – which consist of solar array panels.

“A partially eclipsed Moon playing hide-and-seek with our solar panel,” Cristoforetti tweeted in both English and Italian.

Since going live, the images have garnered thousands of likes and hundreds of comments and retweets.

“Saw the station last night while watching the eclipse! Waved at you all and wondered how great the view was from up there. Thank you for sharing these photos!” one Twitter user commented.

“Amazing photos, thanks for sharing,” a second user echoed.

“These are some of the coolest pictures of the moon I’ve seen. It looks like they’re straight out of a movie,” a third person chimed in.

What is a lunar eclipse?

The Earth is constantly rotating around the Sun, and the Moon is constantly rotating around the Earth.

Sometimes all three can align, placing the Earth directly between the Sun and the Moon in a straight line.

It means the Moon is in the darkest part of Earth’s shadow – the “umbra.”

And due to the convenient sizing and distancing of all three objects, no sunlight can directly reach the Moon.

However, some sunlight is refracted by Earth’s atmosphere, making the Moon appear reddish – hence the name “Blood Moon”.

Lunar eclipses typically last just a few hours and can be viewed from anywhere on the night side of Earth.

Because they’re typically quite dim, it’s also possible to view lunar eclipses without eye protection, which isn’t the case with a solar eclipse.

How many types of lunar eclipses are there?

There are three different types of lunar eclipses.

A “total lunar eclipse” is when the Moon turns deep red, receiving only light that’s passed through Earth’s atmosphere.

“Penumbral lunar eclipses” happen when the Sun, Moon, and Earth fail to form a perfectly straight line, so the Moon only travels through the outer part of Earth’s shadow.

Lastly, a “partial lunar eclipse” describes when part of the Moon travels through Earth’s full shadow – which results in part of the Moon being darkened.
