Manchester City defeat Paris Saint-Germain as both teams qualify for Champions League knockout stages

Having been on the back foot throughout the first half, PSG took the lead at the start of the second period when Lionel Messi’s deflected cross was finished by Kylian Mbappe.

But the lead lasted little more than 10 minutes as City equalized through Raheem Sterling’s poked shot from close range — just reward for City, which had dominated possession for most of the match.

And with 15 minutes remaining, Gabriel Jesus grabbed the winner for the home side after he was teed up by Bernardo Silva inside the PSG box.

RB Leipzig’s 5-0 win against Club Brugge in the group’s other game means that both PSG and City go through to the knockout stages.

The entertaining contest in Manchester — which pitted two of the Champions League’s best sides against each other, both of whom reached the final of the competition in the past two seasons — came to life in the second half after City had controlled the first 45 minutes.

Pep Guardiola’s side could have taken the lead in the game’s opening minutes, but Rodri’s header was cleared off the line by Presnel Kimpembe.

Then midway through the first half, Man City had further chances as Ilkay Gundogan’s powerful shot rattled off the post and Riyad Mahrez had an attempt saved by PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

PSG had few chances and was suffocated by City’s passing and high press, but with Messi, Mbappe and Neymar in attack, a breakaway goal always seemed a possibility.

That’s exactly what happened at the start of the second half when Messi broke down the left and crossed to Mbappe, who slid a shot through the legs of Ederson to give PSG the lead with his ninth goal of the season.

Man City continued to attack the PSG goal and hit back through Sterling after Kyle Walker’s cross went past Jesus and found the England forward at the back post.

Neymar had a golden opportunity to give PSG the lead on 73 minutes after a slaloming run through the Man City defense, but he pushed his shot wide.

It proved a costly miss, as moments later City took the lead through Jesus’ goal, handing his side a deserved victory.

The result means City has 12 points and is guaranteed to finish top of the group with PSG on eight points.

“We’re very happy — very happy with the three points, very happy because we qualified first in the group, which is very important for us, and very happy as well because our fans deserved a good performance and a good win,” Silva told BT Sport after the match.

Buildup to the game had been dominated by speculation linking PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino with City’s rival Manchester United, which parted ways with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the weekend.

But Pochettino, whose contract with PSG runs until 2023, declined to get drawn into the rumors.

“We cannot talk about that (because of) my respect to my club, to Paris Saint-Germain, my respect to another club. What another club are doing in that moment is not my business, is not my problem,” he told reporters ahead of the game.

“I need to be focused on Paris Saint-Germain. I’m not going to make the mistake to talk … I am so happy at Paris Saint-Germain and I am focused on trying to give my best like I’m doing.”

Paris Saint-Germain women’s soccer player arrested in attack on teammate

A player for the Paris Saint-Germain women’s soccer team was arrested Wednesday in France in connection with an attack on one of her teammates, the club said.

The player, midfielder Aminata Diallo, 26, was taken into police custody as part of an investigation “following an assault last Thursday evening against the club’s players,” the club said in a statement. It did not name the injured player.

“Paris Saint-Germain condemns in the strongest possible terms the violence committed. Since the evening of Thursday, Nov. 4, the club has taken all the necessary measures to guarantee the health, well-being and safety of its players,” the club said.

Diallo replaced her injured teammate, Kheira Hamraoui, for a European Champions League game Tuesday against Real Madrid.

The French sports newspaper L’Equipe was the first to report that the arrest was in connection with a violent attack on Hamraoui, a PSG midfielder, last Thursday.

After a team dinner organized by PSG, Hamraoui was in a car driven by Diallo when two masked men are alleged to have appeared around 10:30 p.m., pulled her from the passenger seat and hit her in the legs with an iron bar, the newspaper reported. The assault lasted a few minutes, and the attackers fled, L’Equipe reported, citing sources familiar with the incident.

Hamraoui, 31, suffered injures to both of her legs and hands, the newspaper reported.

“PSG is working closely with the Versailles SRPJ (Service Régional de Police Judiciaire) to shed light on the facts,” the club said, adding that it will consider what action to take.

The incident appears to echo the 1994 Tonya Harding scandal.

In January 1994, Harding’s ex-husband Jeff Gillooly orchestrated an attack on her skating rival Nancy Kerrigan, who was hit in the legs with a baton and forced to withdraw from the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Harding ended up winning the competition.

She pleaded guilty to conspiracy to hinder prosecution in March 1994, and Gillooly was sentenced to prison. Harding was banned for life from the U.S. Figure Skating Association in June 1994.

Lionel Messi PSG debut: Superstar comes off bench; Mbappe scores twice in Paris Saint-Germain win vs. Reims

REIMS — Lionel Messi finally made his PSG debut on Sunday, coming off the bench in the club’s 2-0 win away at Stade de Reims in Ligue 1. But it was Kylian Mbappe who stole the show with both goals in the win.

The France international scored once in each half as even the home crowd clamored for Messi (buy his new PSG jersey here) and was finally rewarded just after Mbappe hit the second. Mauricio Pochettino waited until the final 66th minute to unleash the legendary Argentine, who subbed in for Neymar. The switch means that we will have to wait to see if the Messi-Neymar-Mbappe trio ever sees the light of day at PSG.

As far as Messi and Mbappe went, the Frenchman was very clearly happy to be on the same pitch as his illustrious new teammate and immediately looked for him at times when he might not have with other more familiar teammates.

The 22-year-old Mbappe, heavily linked with Real Madrid as the transfer window approaches an end, underlined his importance to Les Parisiens once more with a clinical performance. Mbappe headed in from a Di Maria cross after a quarter of an hour and put the finishing touch to a lightning fast counter-attack after 63 minutes as his strong understanding with summer arrival Achraf Hakimi continues to develop.

Messi’s best chance was snuffed out 12 minutes from time after linking up with Mbappe, and the South American was introduced to Ligue 1’s customary heavy tackling as Reims lost their cool at times toward the end.

Lionel Messi PSG debut: Paris Saint-Germain vs. Reims live updates as Messi begins on bench; Mbappe starts

The moment has arrived when Lionel Messi could take the field for a domestic match wearing a jersey that is not Barcelona’s. The Argentine superstar will likely make his debut for Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday against Stade de Reims in a Ligue 1 matchup (here’s how to watch). But Messi is not in Mauricio Pochettino’s starting lineup.

The French giants confirmed Saturday that Messi (buy his new PSG jersey here), Neymar and Kylian Mbappe would be in the PSG squad for the clash at Stade Auguste Delaune. Messi will come off the bench if he plays Sunday, but Mbappe — potentially in his final game for the club — is in the PSG starting XI. Here’s the PSG starting lineup.

Messi’s potential debut is not the only major talking point coming into this game; there is also the question of Mbappe’s future. Real Madrid are pushing hard to secure him in a big-money move before this summer’s transfer window closes on Aug. 31. But both Mbappe and Messi are expected to feature heavily against Reims. As if that was not enough, Neymar is also in line for his first minutes of the 2021-22 season, having not featured in any of PSG’s wins over ESTAC Troyes, RC Strasbourg Alsace and Stade Brestois 29.

We’ll be providing live updates from Reims-PSG with analysis, highlights and the latest news. Follow along below.

Lionel Messi: Paris Saint-Germain now has ‘no excuses’ in quest for Champions League domination

But can this squad deliver Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), who bought PSG in 2011, the Champions League — the trophy the owners crave the most, but has so far eluded them?

The signings of highly-rated goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, Messi’s long-time adversary Sergio Ramos, Georginio Wijnaldum and Achraf Hakimi — added to an already stacked squad that includes Neymar and Kylian Mbappé — mean PSG will unquestionably be the overwhelming favorite to lift this season’s Champions League.

“QSI bought PSG in 2011 because they wanted increased exposure for the country ahead of an eventual World Cup,” Christian Nourry, founder of Get French Football News, told CNN Sport.

“That World Cup is now coming, it’s only next year, but what’s happened over the course of this decade is that we’ve seen Al Thani, the owner, fall in love with this club, really taking a lot of interest in this,” added Nourry, referring to the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

“[It’s] far more than a pet project for him and he’s seen this opportunity to create potentially the greatest attacking troika we’ve seen in modern football in Mbappé, Neymar and Messi, but also there are no excuses now.”

At PSG, Messi will work under coach Mauricio Pochettino, a former player of the Parisian club and a fellow Argentine.

“Mauricio Pochettino must win absolutely everything, that includes the Champions League, and he must do so in style, because in style has been something that Paris Saint-Germain have really struggled to do, with a largely counterattacking style of play over the course of the last two or three seasons,” added Nourry.

No pressure, then, Mauricio.

PSG ‘ideal’ for Messi

But it’s a sentiment that Messi appears to agree with.

In an interview with CNN after his arrival in Paris, the Argentine said he believes PSG is the “ideal” place for him to finally win another Champions League title.

Despite Messi’s consistently superlative individual performances over the years, the one blemish on his record in recent seasons has been his inability to again lead Barcelona to European football’s most coveted prize — although it is widely argued that the Catalan club’s ineptitude in building a suitable squad around him was the root cause of this.

That, however, will not be the case at PSG, a club now stacked with an eye-watering amount of talent and a visceral desire to win a first Champions League in its history.

“For me on a personal level, I would love to win another Champions League, like I’ve said in previous years, and I think I’ve come to the ideal place that’s ready for that,” Messi told CNN.

“We have the same goals. It’s got impressive players, one of the best squads in the world and, hopefully, we can achieve that goal which Paris wants so much, I want so much and hopefully we can enjoy it with the people of Paris too.”

PSG’s new front three of Messi, Neymar and Mbappé is unquestionably the most talented attack in world football and will give opposition defenders and managers nightmares trying to conjure up ways to stop them.

“It’s all just going to be about how many goals and assists is he [Messi] getting compared to Kylian Mbappé and Neymar,” Nourry says. “Who is going to be taking the majority of that responsibility on? I can’t wait to find out.”

Off the pitch, though, questions have already been asked about PSG’s finances and how the club has been able to get around the Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.

“We’re always attentive to Financial Fair Play. It’s the first thing we check with the commercial, financial and legal people before signing someone,” PSG chairman and CEO Nasser Al-Khelaifi told reporters on Wednesday when Messi was officially unveiled.

When rumors of Messi’s arrival began circulating, it was suggested that PSG would have to offload Mbappé — reportedly to Real Madrid — in order to balance the books. The French club, however, has been adamant that is far from the case.

“The message is clear from Paris Saint-Germain around Kylian Mbappé: the two situations are not linked,” Nourry says. “Mbappé has 12 months left on his contract. In fact, Paris Saint-Germain are confident this signing will encourage him more to sign a new extension.

“The argument that we hear a lot in the capital of France at the moment is: why would you go this summer or next to Real Madrid to play alongside Karim Benzema and Vinícius Júnior, when you could spend the next three seasons alongside Neymar and Lionel Messi for your development. I think that’s a pretty strong argument.”

French football rules allow clubs to operate with a wage bill that is almost 100% of its annual income, a far cry from the strict Spanish rules that ultimately forced Messi’s departure from Barcelona.

UEFA, European football’s governing body, has also relaxed its FFP regulations since the Covid-19 outbreak, allowing clubs to operate with annual losses of more than $35 million as long as they can prove these were due to the pandemic.

“Having said that, Paris Saint-Germain have promised to make €180 million ($211M) worth of player sales this summer to the French football financial watchdog, the DNCG,” Nourry explains.

“They’ve only done about €8 million of that, so it’s going to be a very busy four weeks if they are to fulfill that and because the transfer market has moved very, very slowly for the majority of clubs, I think that’s going to be tricky.

“But Paris Saint-Germain are looking to sell — or being open to sell — 12-14 players, those include lesser stars like Mauro Icardi and Pablo Sarabia, but [there is] no intention to sell a key player this summer in Paris.”

Boost for French football?

Perhaps the only people licking their lips at Messi’s arrival as much as PSG fans are those in charge of France’s top division, Ligue 1, and Amazon.

“The arrival of Lionel Messi will increase the attractiveness and visibility of our championship on all continents,” said Ligue 1 President Vincent Labrune in a statement on Wednesday.

“This unique event is the result of the strategy of the Paris Saint-Germain management, which has enabled the Parisian club to become one of the biggest franchises in world sport in 10 years.

“On behalf of French professional football, I want to thank PSG Chairman and CEO Nasser Al-Khelaïfi for making this dream possible,” added Lebrune, who ended his statement with three words: “Messi is magic!”

Nourry calls the signing a “huge surprise” for French football, but it is certainly a welcome one given the financial struggles the league has faced over the past 18 months.

Ligue 1 not only had to deal with the implications of being the only one of Europe’s top five leagues not able to finish the 2019/20 season due to Covid, but also with the collapse of broadcast partner Mediapro, which had been paying almost $1 billion per year for broadcast rights.

Amazon has since come in to pick up the majority of broadcasting rights, around eight matches per week, in a deal reported by the Financial Times to be worth $323 million per season, with French broadcaster Canal+ paying $390 million per season for two matches per week.

“[It’s] a great opportunity taken by Paris Saint-Germain and will hopefully result in lots of exposure for Ligue 1,” Nourry says. “Because we’re about 50% down on the TV rights deal this year compared to last year, with the collapse of Mediapro.

“So there’s lots of excitement in France, but it’s probably not going to stop about seven or eight clubs in the division this season from being unable to pay back loans they took out during Covid-19.”

However, Kieran Maguire, author of “The Price of Football,” believes that while PSG will certainly receive a financial boost from Messi’s signing, that won’t necessarily be the case for Ligue 1.

Maguire says the increased lack of competitiveness at the top of the league, created by PSG’s financial outlay this summer, will cause broadcaster interest to “wane quite quickly” and remains unconvinced Messi’s signing will “create a long queue” of suitors desperate to pay for TV rights.

“PSG will benefit because we already saw last night — 150,000 shirts sold within seven minutes was the claim — so they will benefit from being able to generate more money on match days,” he told CNN. “Even if they don’t put up the price of regular tickets, the commercial department will effectively be able to name their own price for hospitality packages.

“If you want to go in this box — if you’re a big firm of lawyers or accountants or you’re an investment banker and you want to entertain a client — we’ve got Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Neymar leading the line. How much are you willing to pay for that? So I think they’ll be able to to increase their revenues.”

Given Messi’s considerable talents and PSG now boasting arguably the greatest attacking trio in history, Maguire says it also seems likely that the club will earn more prize money for reaching the latter stages of the Champions League.

“So I think there’s lots of benefits for the club,” he explains. “But for French football as a whole, yes, there will be an initial media interest and a curiosity value attached to his recruitment, [but] whether that will convert into significant increases in the value of a broadcast deal … I’m not so certain.”

Lionel Messi completes move to Paris Saint-Germain, according to French media reports

French outlet L’Equipe says on its website that the football superstar will sign an initial two-year deal with the French giants.

L’Equipe and Le Parisien add the Argentine is expected to arrive in Paris on Tuesday afternoon.

Paris Saint-Germain said they had no comment when contacted earlier on Tuesday by CNN.

Messi’s move to Paris brings his historic 20-plus-year spell at Barcelona to an end.

The Argentine, widely considered one of the best players of all-time, failed to sign a new contract with Barcelona.

Barcelona said the club’s dire financial situation and La Liga’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations meant it could not give Messi a new contract, despite both parties coming to an agreement.

The 34-year-old’s previous contract, which expired at the end of June, was revealed by Spanish newspaper El Mundo to be worth $672 million and made him the highest paid athlete in sports history.

Messi had expressed his desire to leave the Catalan club last year but decided to stay because he had no intention of disputing the club’s decision in court and dragging out a legal dispute.

In a tearful press conference on Sunday, the club’s all-time top goal scorer reflected on his career at Barcelona in which he won numerous major collective and individual awards, including four Champions League titles and 10 La Liga titles.

“I gave my all for this club for this shirt, from the first day I arrived to the last,” he said.

“And the truth is that I am more than satisfied. I would have liked to say goodbye in a different way. I never imagined my farewell this way.”
