Bob Saget death investigation: Orange County Sheriff’s Office’s final report reaffirms no foul play

“Yesterday, a court order was entered prohibiting the release of certain materials gathered during the course of OCSO’s investigation into the death of Bob Saget. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office will comply with the order, while remaining committed to transparency and following the law regarding access to public records,” OCSO said in an email.

Saget’s family filed a lawsuit last month against Orange County’s sheriff and the medical examiner’s office, requesting that some investigation records related to his death be exempt from being revealed publicly. A Florida judge granted a permanent injunction Monday blocking the release of additional records related to the death investigation, CNN previously reported.
According to the OCSO’s final incident report on Saget’s death, also released Tuesday, Saget’s family requested security at the Ritz Carlton in Orlando conduct a wellness check on Saget on his checkout date of January 9 after they were unable to reach him. Hotel security contacted local authorities after finding Saget “unresponsive and cold to the touch.”

Responding authorities found the room in order with “no evidence of a struggle, any type of foul play, or that anyone else was in the room at any time during his stay,” the report says.

“Mr. Saget was lying on his back on the right side of the bed, partially covered by the sheet and bedspread, with his left arm lying loosely across his torso and his right arm by his side. The sheets, bedspread, and pillowcases on the bed were white and there were no signs of blood or bodily fluids on them or anywhere else in the suite,” the report says, adding Saget appeared to have slight swelling and a bruise over his left eye.

The report notes that while the door between the room adjoining Saget’s was unlocked, the occupying guests checked out two days before and there was no evidence of entry afterward. The report says Saget’s room was opened shortly after 2 a.m. local time on January 9, a time consistent with his departure from his show in Jacksonville that night, and not opened again until around 4 p.m. by hotel security staff coming to check on him.

“No one entered or left his room, until security entered that afternoon at the request of his family,” the report says.

Four legally prescribed medications were found in Saget’s luggage, the report says.

An autopsy conducted the following day by Chief Medical Examiner Joshua Stephany found “a fracture at the base of Mr. Saget’s skull, the evidence of bleeding around the brain, and demonstrated the transfer of force that broke the orbital bones at the front of the skull.”

Stephany “explained that the amount of force necessary to cause the fracture, coupled with the fact that the skin on the back of the head was still intact, led him to believe that the injury was most likely caused by ‘something hard, covered by something soft,’ and he gave, as an example, a fall onto a carpeted floor,” the report says.

Stephany concluded such a blow would have “stunned” Saget and caused symptoms such as dizziness, confusion and slurred speech. Stephany told investigators Saget would not have been able to drive the two hours back from Jacksonville he reportedly did in his rental car after sustaining such a traumatic brain injury, the report says.

Following the autopsy, investigators returned to the hotel to reexamine the scene “to locate specific places or items in the room that could have caused the trauma.” Nothing definitive was identified, the report said.

Stephany noted Saget’s head injury likely occurred within a few hours of his death but could have occurred in the days prior, the report says. A number of interviews conducted by authorities with people who interacted with Saget in his final days produced no evidence of drug or alcohol use or any behavior out of the ordinary, the report says.

A photo taken at the request of the valet at the Ritz Carlton in Orlando in the early morning hours on January 9 shows no visual evidence of injury or trauma to Saget’s face, the report says.

The cause of death was determined to be blunt head trauma. The manner of death was determined to be an accident, the report says.

Police believe Bob Saget hit head on bathroom floor: report

Authorities investigating Bob Saget’s death believe the “Full House” star collapsed in his hotel bathroom and struck his head on the marble floor – before he stumbled into bed, lost consciousness again and died, according to a report.

The 65-year-old actor died on Jan. 9 after suffering “blunt head trauma” at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando Grande Lakes in Florida, an autopsy has revealed.

He suffered skull fractures so severe that one doctor reportedly speculated they could have been caused by falling from several stories or a baseball bat attack.

Investigators now believe Saget lost consciousness in the bathroom, fell backward onto the marble floor and stuck his head, People magazine reports.

He is believed to have regained consciousness and stumbled into bed before losing consciousness again and dying, according to the mag.

Saget’s time of death was estimated to be about 4 a.m., some 12 hours before his body was found, People said.

“It’s definitely an unusual case. There are still a lot of unanswered questions,” an Orange County Sheriff’s deputy told the outlet.

When he arrived at the swanky hotel, Saget “was cracking jokes, waving to people in the lobby,” an employee told the mag in the latest issue.

“When people asked for selfies, he would run over and grab their phones to take the pictures with them, joking the whole time. He was a ball happy, positive energy,” the staffer said.

The last time he was seen on surveillance camera, he was exiting an elevator on the ninth floor and walking down the long corridor toward his room, People reported.

Authorities who have seen the video told the mag that nothing appeared out of the ordinary before he entered his room at 2:17 a.m. and hung a “Do Not Disturb” sign on the doorknob.

The medical examiner has noted that Saget’s respiratory system was “COVID-positive.”

Saget’s widow, Kelly Rizzo, has explained that the late actor’s recent battle with COVID-19 — which he had revealed on a podcast a few days before his death — was “not anything serious.”

His death was ruled accidental and authorities have said there were no signs of foul play or drugs at the scene.

A Florida judge has granted Saget’s family a temporary injunction to block the release of photos and records connected to the investigation of his fatal injury.

As the probe nears the end, those close to Saget are focusing on their fond memories.

“We all want to keep Bob’s legacy alive,” “Full House” co-star Candace Cameron Bure told People. “I want to share things about Bob and share about the laughs and the good times. That part feels comforting.”

Judge blocks release of additional records in Bob Saget death investigation

The judge’s decision comes after Saget’s family filed a lawsuit Tuesday to block the release of certain records, citing privacy concerns, as CNN previously reported.

Saget, 65, was found dead in his hotel room in Orlando, Florida, last month. The Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that his death was accidental, most likely due to him falling backward and striking his head.

On Tuesday, Saget’s widow Kelly Rizzo and her three daughters filed a lawsuit against Orange County’s sheriff and the medical examiner’s office, requesting that some investigation records related to the death be exempt from being revealed publicly because of their graphic nature in how they portray the late actor.

“In the process of these investigations, Defendants created records which include photographs, video recordings, audio recordings, statutorily protected autopsy information, and all other statutorily protected information,” the lawsuit stated. “Upon information and belief, some of these Records graphically depict Mr. Saget, his likeness or features, or parts of him, and were made by Defendants during Defendants’ investigations.”

The family argues in the lawsuit that the release of this information — whether through a public records request or any other avenue — would cause them to “suffer irreparable harm in the form of extreme mental pain, anguish, and emotional distress.”

In court documents obtained by CNN affiliate WESH, Ninth Circuit Court Judge Vincent Chiu agreed and granted the motion.

Brian Bieber, a Saget family attorney, told CNN that the injunction was filed to “prevent disclosure of any photographs or videos of Mr. Saget made by the authorities during their investigation.”

“The facts of the investigation should be made public, but these materials should remain private out of respect for the dignity of Mr. Saget and his family. It’s very simple — from a human and legal standpoint, the Saget family’s privacy rights outweigh any public interest in disclosure of this sensitive information.”

“While we are sensitive to the family’s concerns about the right to privacy, that must be balanced with our commitment to transparency, compliance with the law, and the public’s right to know,” the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement to CNN on Wednesday.

The autopsy report showed that Saget had tested positive for Covid-19, though he died from a head injury when he fell in a hotel room in Orlando.

“It is the most probable that the decedent suffered an unwitnessed fall backwards and struck the posterior aspect of his head. The manner of death is accident,” Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Joshua D. Stephany said in his report.

According to the report, Saget also had an enlarged heart; 95% blocked on one side. And while there was no alcohol present in his body, his systems contained Clonazepam/Klonopin — which is taken for seizures, panic disorders and anxiety, the report shows. Additionally, the antidepressant Trazodone was found in Saget’s system, the report said.

CNN’s Joe Sutton and Chloe Melas contributed to this report.

Bob Saget died from accidental head trauma, medical examiner says

Actor and comedian Bob Saget died from accidental head trauma, a Florida medical examiner said Thursday. Saget was 65 when he died last month.

No illicit drugs or toxins were found in his system, Dr. Joshua Stephany, chief medical examiner for Orange and Osceola counties, said in a statement. Stephany said Saget died from “blunt head trauma” and was an accident.

“His injuries were most likely incurred from an unwitnessed fall,” Stephany said.

An autopsy report released later Thursday showed that Saget had an abrasion on his scalp, a fracture at the base of his skull, fractures around his eye sockets, bleeding between the brain and tissue covering the brain as well as bruises to the brain, according to the Associated Press.

In a statement to Entertainment Tonight on Wednesday, the “Full House” star’s family said he “accidentally hit the back of his head on something, thought nothing of it and went to sleep.”

“In the weeks since Bob’s passing, we have been overwhelmed with the incredible outpouring of love from Bob’s fans, which has been a great comfort to us and for which we are eternally grateful,” the family said. “Now that we have the final conclusions from the authorities’ investigation, we felt it only proper that the fans hear those conclusions directly from us.”

E! News was the first to report his cause of death.

Saget was found in his Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes hotel room by hotel security on January 9. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“His left arm was across his chest while his right arm was resting on the bed. No signs of trauma were seen,” the incident report said.

Bob Saget had Covid-19 and died as a result of blunt head trauma, according to autopsy report

“It is in my opinion that the death of Robert Saget, a 65-year-old white male found unresponsive in a hotel room, is the result of blunt head trauma. It is the most probable that the decedent suffered an unwitnessed fall backwards and struck the posterior aspect of his head. The manner of death is accident,” the statement from Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Joshua D. Stephany said in his report.

The report noted that a PCR test showed that Saget, 65, was also positive for Covid-19.

Saget, who died in his Orlando, Florida hotel room last month, had said in December that he had Covid-19, and PCR tests can return positive results for weeks after recovery.

The autopsy also noted he had an enlarged heart; 95% blocked on one side.

No alcohol was present in his system, according to the report. However, the report stated, his systems contained Clonazepam/Klonopin which is taken for seizures, panic disorders and anxiety. Additionally, the antidepressant Trazodone was found in Saget’s system, the report said.

CNN has reached out to the Saget family for additional comment.

Danger of head injuries

The report noted areas of bleeding in the space between the brain and the skull. This kind of injury compresses the brain and can be fatal.

On Wednesday, prior to the release of the Medical Examiner’s report, CNN’s chief medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta said it sounded like Saget suffered from a possible “bleed on top of the brain,” which may have resulted in a “subdural hematoma.”

“There is a blood collection in this scenario that’s on top of the brain pushing on the brain,” Dr. Gupta demonstrated to CNN’s Don Lemon using a diagram. “The thing about the brain, unlike any other organ in the body, it’s obviously encased in hard skull so it has no where to go if it has this kind of pressure on it.”

That pressure on the brain and brain stem can result in a person losing consciousness and their ability to breathe on their own.

“It may have been a pretty significant blow to the head,” Gupta said. “Maybe a fall in the bathroom, or on the headboard of your bed, you don’t think anything of it. Small veins can tear as a result of that blow and blood can start to leak.”

In a statement released Wednesday, Saget’s family said they have been “overwhelmed with the incredible outpouring of love from Bob’s fans, which has been a great comfort to us and for which we are eternally grateful.”

“As we continue to mourn together, we ask everyone to remember the love and laughter that Bob brought to this world, and the lessons he taught us all: to be kind to everyone, to let the people you love know you love them, and to face difficult times with hugs and laughter,” the statement added.

The Orlando Police Department did not immediately return CNN’s request for comment.

CNN’s Lisa Respers France, Sandra Gonzalez, Brenda Goodman and Katherine Dillinger contributed to this report.

Bob Saget Died of Head Trauma, Family Says

Bob Saget, the stand-up comedian and actor known for playing Danny Tanner on “Full House,” died of head trauma after he accidentally hit something, his family said in a statement on Wednesday.

Mr. Saget, 65, was found unresponsive on Jan. 9 in a hotel room at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lake, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

“Now that we have the final conclusions from the authorities’ investigation, we felt it only proper that the fans hear those conclusions directly from us,” the family said. “They have concluded that he accidentally hit the back of his head on something, thought nothing of it and went to sleep. No drugs or alcohol were involved.”

The sheriff’s office said that after they found Mr. Saget there were no signs of foul play.

The sheriff’s office referred comment to the medical examiner’s office, which did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Wednesday evening.

Mr. Saget, who was on tour at the time, had performed on Jan. 8 at Ponte Vedra Concert Hall in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., southeast of Jacksonville. In a tweet early on Jan. 9, he thanked the “appreciative audience.”

“In the weeks since Bob’s passing, we have been overwhelmed with the incredible outpouring of love from Bob’s fans, which has been a great comfort to us and for which we are eternally grateful,” his family said in its statement. “As we continue to mourn together, we ask everyone to remember the love and laughter that Bob brought to this world, and the lessons he taught us all: to be kind to everyone, to let the people you love know you love them, and to face difficult times with hugs and laughter.”

In a post on Instagram marking a month since Mr. Saget’s death, Kelly Rizzo, his widow, said he “truly lived life to its fullest.”

“He had so many hardships over the years that he would always tell me ‘look, life is hard, we need to enjoy it as much as possible,’” Ms. Rizzo wrote.

Candace Cameron Bure Says She And Bob Saget Got Into ‘Little Tiff’ Before His Death

Candace Cameron Bure lovingly recalled her final conversation and last words with Bob Saget before the comedian died in January.

During an appearance on “Today” this week, Bure told Hoda Kotb that she and Saget, who played her father on “Full House,” got into a “little tiff” just two weeks before Saget died, but luckily were able to patch things up right away.

“We were going to have dinner. And we got into a little tiff. And his flight was delayed ― we ended up not having dinner,” Bure said.

“But, in Bob fashion, the next day he wrote me what would be pages-long of a text,” she said, adding that the comedian “was apologizing, saying he was cranky and he was just so sorry.”

Saget said that his “cranky” behavior reminded him of his late mom, Dolly, in his texts to Bure.

“He said, ‘Oh now I feel even worse. I was so wrong. You’re, like, my favorite person on the earth. And I acted like Dolly. I was getting ready to take a late flight and I was annoyed,’” she said, explaining that “Bob went on and on and on in the text.”

“And he said at the end, ‘I love you more for the trouble you’re giving me, if that’s even possible,’” Bure said. “And I wrote back, ‘I love you ― I could never be mad at you. Roll my eyes at you? Yes. But never mad.’”

“‘And I love that [you being] Dolly. That made me laugh out loud. I loved your mom,’” she added.

Bob texted back, “I love you. My mom loved you too.”

Bure told Kotb that the last texts from Saget are precious to her.

“I’m so scared that I’m gonna pull up his text and then accidentally delete it one day,” Bure said as her voice started to break. “It scares me so much. Because I don’t ever want to lose this.”

Saget, 65, was found dead in Orlando, Florida, after performing a stand-up show in Jacksonville while on a nationwide comedy tour. A cause of death was not immediately known, but foul play and drug use were not suspected.

Farewell Concert Held For Comedian Bob Saget At The Comedy Store – Deadline

Beloved omedian and actor Bob Saget, who notably starred as the patriarch on ABC’s Full House, died Jan. 9 at age 65. Since that day, friends and family have found various ways to honor his legacy. One such way is through music and comedy as Saget’s wife Kelly, daughters and friends put together a farewell concert for Saget at the Comedy Store–the very place Saget built his career.

Produced by Mike Binder and hosted by comedian Jeff Ross, actor John Stamos and musician John Mayer, the show included performances by Jim Carrey, Chris Rock, Darren Criss, Jon Lovitz, Michael Keaton, Seth Green, Jodi Sweeten Byron Allen, and more, brought their collective talents to honor America’s favorite Dad. Stamos and Mayer, both pallbearers at Bob’s funeral, formed an impromptu house band that played alongside Ross and the other comics gentle riffing of the life and legacy of their lost friend.

The sold-out event is giving proceeds to the Scleroderma Research Foundation, a cause dear to Bob’s heart as his sister died of the disease. The evening ended with a raucous audience sing-along led by Bob’s wife, Kelly Saget, and his daughters Aubrey and Lara. The ode, in homage to Bob’s salty sense of humor, was “My Dog Licked My Balls.”

Bob Saget Mourned By ‘Full House’ Cast, Comedians At Funeral

Bob Saget was mourned Friday during a Los Angeles funeral service attended by his Full House costars and numerous other Hollywood celebrities.

According to TMZ, hundreds gathered at Mt. Sinai Memorial Park Cemetery in the Hollywood Hills to honor the late comedian, who died suddenly on Jan. 9 at the age of 65.

Full House actresses Jodie Sweetin, Candace Cameron Bure and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who played Saget’s daughters in the beloved long-running sitcom, were all in attendance, while co-stars John Stamos and Dave Coulier served as pallbearers during the ceremony.

“Bob was the most loving, compassionate and generous man,” the Olsen twins said in a statement to Rolling Stone following Saget’s death. “We are deeply saddened that he is no longer with us but know that he will continue to be by our side to guide us as gracefully as he always has. We are thinking of his daughters, wife and family and are sending our condolences.”

“I am broken. I am gutted. I am in complete and utter shock,” Stamos wrote on Twitter Sunday. “I will never ever have another friend like him. I love you so much Bobby.”

Other guests at Saget’s funeral included John Mayer, Dave Chappelle, Kathy Griffin, Chris Rock, Seth Green, Norman Lear, Jeff Ross and Judd Apatow, according to TMZ.

While Saget’s wholesome stints as the widowed Danny Tanner on Full House and the host of America’s Funniest Home Videos made him a household name, it was ultimately Saget’s penchant for raunchy, ribald humor that endeared him to a generation of comics — including Saturday Night Live cast member Pete Davidson.

“Bob Saget was one of the nicest men on the planet,” Davidson wrote in a letter posted to social media. “When I was younger and several times throughout our friendship he helped me get through some rough mental health stuff.”

Saget was found unresponsive in his hotel room on Sunday at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes. Authorities pronounced him dead at the scene. The incident remains under investigation, but officials say there is no evidence drug use or foul play contributed to Saget’s death.

Full House Star Jodie Sweetin Remembers Bob Saget, Has One ‘Vow’ For His Funeral

Hollywood and the public as a whole continue to mourn the loss of veteran actor and comedian Bob Saget. The beloved entertainer died at the age of 65 this past weekend in Orlando and, since the news broke, many have been sharing their fondest memories of him. A number of these tributes have come from his Full House co-stars, who lovingly remember him for his kindness and humorous nature. Jodie Sweetin, who played Saget’s TV middle child Stephanie Tanner, shared some sweet words of her own and also made a sweet “vow” pertaining to the late star’s funeral.

Based on what’s been said, Bob Saget was very protective of his younger stars, and Jodie Sweetin’s recent comments on Instagram beautifully exemplify this. Sweetin knew a lot about her co-star, which, of course, included his career as a raunchy (and celebrated) comedian. As a result, the promise she made for his funeral is incredibly on brand:

I’ll miss you Bob. I’ll make sure and tell an inappropriate joke at your funeral. In your honor. I know you would’ve wanted that. But you were supposed to be here longer. How Rude.

The former America’s Funniest Home Videos host was never one to mince words on stage, and that was honestly part of his appeal. Still, that dark humor never actually seeped into his work on the family-friendly ABC sitcom. It also sounds like he kept things clean when he was around his impressionable television children. Jodie Sweetin listed off some sweet memories in her tribute, including one time that she managed to dish out a killer joke of her own:

Notes sessions on the show, sitting and laughing all together at the kitchen table on set. [Bob] and Dave dancing together at my 13th Birthday party, being ridiculous, as usual. Spending weekends at his house with his daughters when I was young, and having blueberry pancakes. The time I out “Bob’d” Bob, with some joke I told. Him telling me he was proud of me. These are just a few of the special memories I hold in my heart and that keep playing on the carousel of memories in my mind.

It’s honestly hard not to get a bit misty-eyed when reading over these sentiments. The cast of Full House always seemed to be a tight-knit group, and these words further prove that they were indeed a family off screen as well. Check out the full post down below:

The actress’ older TV sister, Candace Cameron Bure also honored Bob Saget by sharing her own memories and, in doing so, she received support from her Hallmark family. Saget’s passing also drew a rare public statement from Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. The two, who had remained friends with Saget, called him “compassionate and generous.” The late performer has also received love from his fellow comedians like Adam Sandler and Pete Davidson. Steve Harvey shared a particularly bittersweet memory about receiving an email from Saget only days before his death.

To say that Bob Saget’s passing is a tremendous loss to the entertainment industry would be an understatement. And if you’re someone like me who grew up watching Full House reruns, then he probably holds a special place in your memories. Jodie Sweetin is sure to keep her friend close to her, and I, for one, hope she nails that joke at the funeral, as it’s what he’d likely want.

We here at CinemaBlend continue to extend our thoughts to Bob Saget’s loved ones during this time.
