ECB officials warn of ‘sacrifice’ needed to tame surging inflation

A larger “sacrifice” will be needed to tame inflation than in previous bouts of monetary policy tightening, according to European Central Bank officials who warned that price growth risks spinning out of control if forceful action is not taken.

Isabel Schnabel, an ECB executive board member, and François Villeroy de Galhau, governor of the Banque de France, said on Saturday that European monetary policy would have to remain tight for an extended period of time.

Their remarks at the Jackson Hole gathering of central bankers from around the world in Wyoming, US, echoed those of Federal Reserve chair Jay Powell, who on Friday vowed to “keep at it” to quash inflation.

The pace of price growth is running at a level not seen for decades in many advanced economies.

“Central banks are likely to face a higher sacrifice ratio compared with the 1980s, even if prices were to respond more strongly to changes in domestic economic conditions, as the globalisation of inflation makes it more difficult for central banks to control price pressures,” Schnabel said.

The sacrifice ratio measures how much pain central banks will need to inflict in terms of weaker growth and lower job creation in order to bring inflation back under control.

Villeroy said there should be “no doubt” about the bank’s willingness to raise rates beyond the so-called neutral rate, a level that neither aids nor constrains growth. He estimated this rate to be between 1 and 2 per cent. Villeroy said it could reach this level “before the end of the year”, adding: “Our will and our capacity to deliver on our mandate are unconditional.”

Eurozone inflation is expected to set a new record of 9 per cent in the year to August when the latest data is released on Wednesday.

Schnabel called for “strong determination to bring inflation back to target quickly”. She added that if a central bank “underestimates the persistence of inflation — as most of us have done over the past one and a half years — and if it is slow to adapt its policies as a result, the costs may be substantial”.

The ECB ended eight years of negative interest rates last month by raising its deposit rate by a half percentage point to zero, surpassing its earlier guidance. Some members of its 25-person governing council are calling for it to consider going further with a 0.75 percentage point rate rise at its meeting on September 8.

Schnabel, a former German economics professor who joined the ECB board at the start of 2020, is one of the central bank’s most influential voices on policy as its head of market operations. She warned that “unprecedented pipeline pressures, tight labour markets and the remaining restrictions on aggregate supply threaten to feed an inflationary process that is becoming harder to control the more hesitantly we act on it”.

Inflation expectations are rising among the public and professional forecasters, many of whom expect prices to keep rising by more than the ECB’s 2 per cent target for several years, Schnabel said, adding that the institution’s credibility was at stake.

“Both the likelihood and the cost of current high inflation becoming entrenched in expectations are uncomfortably high,” said Schnabel. “In this environment, central banks need to act forcefully.”

Villeroy — usually a centrist on the ECB governing council — echoed the hawkish tone. But the French central bank governor signalled that he still thought a 0.5 percentage point rate rise would be enough next month, saying he favoured “another significant step in September”.

The comments come a day after Powell reset expectations about how high interest rates in the US might need to rise and for how long, as the Fed grapples with excessive price pressures driven in part by supply-related factors but also excessive demand.

The US central bank chair warned that efforts to cool the economy were likely to require a “sustained period” of low growth, a weaker labour market and “some pain” for households and businesses.

Like his counterparts at the ECB, Powell said a failure to successfully tame inflation now would lead to higher costs later on, suggesting the Fed is unlikely to pause its tightening cycle anytime soon.

In contrast, speaking from the audience during the Q&A section of the Jackson Hole panel, Haruhiko Kuroda, governor of the Bank of Japan, set out why his country was not aggressively tightening monetary policy.

“We have no choice other than continue monetary easing until wages and prices rise in a stable and sustainable manner,” he said. Kuroda projected that Japanese inflation would approach 3 per cent by the end of this year and then decelerate towards 1.5 per cent next year.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice Gets Free Xbox Series X/S Optimization Patch

Ninja Theory’s critically-acclaimed action-adventure game, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, was one of the most popular games released in 2017. If you have yet to experience it, developer Ninja Theory has released an optimization patch today on Xbox Series X/S, updating a number of visual elements for new-gen consoles.

The new update allows the game to take full advantage of Microsoft’s ninth-generation gaming hardware, meaning Hellblade not only gets improved basic visuals but includes additional perks, such as DirectX raytracing and three graphical modes: Performance, Resolution, and Enriched, with the latter mode offering support for raytracing.

If you own an Xbox copy digitally or physically, you will receive the update at no additional cost; the game is also available on Xbox Game Pass as well as Xbox Cloud Gaming. An optimization patch for the PC version of the game is currently in development, though there are no plans to bring this update to additional platforms at the moment.

Hellblade is not the only game released on a previous console generation that received an Xbox Series X/S optimization patch. Several first-party Microsoft titles released on the Xbox One received similar updates, including Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Gears 5.

The update comes at an interesting time for Senua’s Sacrifice, as the game recently celebrated its four-year anniversary yesterday. Ninja Theory is currently working on a sequel titled Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, which was announced in late 2019 and will launch as an Xbox Series X/S console exclusive and Windows 10 PCs, with the game guaranteed to be available on Xbox Game Pass at launch.

Ninja Theory also confirmed that the optimization patches for Senua’s Sacrifice will not impact the development of Hellblade II as the team is partnered with QLOC, a studio that helped the team port Hellblade onto the Nintendo Switch to assist with the updates.

In the frugal last meal of a man 2,400 years ago, scientists see signs of human sacrifice

When the Tollund Man was discovered in a bog in Denmark 71 years ago, he was so well preserved that his finders thought he was the victim of a recent murder.

It took archaeologists to reveal he had been thrown into the bog almost 2,400 years ago, and that he’d first been hanged — a noose of plaited animal hide was still around his neck. The careful arrangement of the body and face — his closed eyes and faint smile — suggested he may have been killed as a human sacrifice, rather than executed as a criminal.

The suggestion that the Tollund Man was killed as a human sacrifice has now been reinforced by a study of the condemned man’s frugal last meal, made from a detailed investigation of the contents of his digestive tract: A porridge of barley, flax and pale persicaria.

The seeds of pale persicaria are the clue to this Iron Age murder mystery, said archaeologist Nina Nielsen, the head of research at Denmark’s Silkeborg Museum and the lead author of the study published Tuesday.

The plant grows wild among barley crops, but evidence from Iron Age grain storage shows it was usually cleaned out as a weed during threshing. That suggests it was part of “threshing waste” that was added to the porridge deliberately — perhaps as part of a ritual meal for those condemned to die by human sacrifice.

“Was it just an ordinary meal? Or was threshing waste something you only included when people were eating a ritual meal?” Nielsen said. “We don’t know that.”

The contents of the Tollund Man’s preserved intestines were examined soon after he was found. But the new study refines that initial examination with much improved archaeological techniques and instruments.

“Back in 1950, they only looked at the well preserved grains and seeds, and not the very fine fraction of the material,” Nielsen said. “But now we have better microscopes, better ways of analyzing the material and new techniques. So that means that we could get more information out of it.”

As well as revealing the clue of the threshing waste added to his last meal, the researchers found it was probably cooked in a clay pot — pieces of overcooked crust can be seen in the traces — and that he’d also eaten fish. They also found  he was suffering from several parasitic infections when he died, including tapeworms — probably from a regular diet of undercooked meat and contaminated water, Nielsen said.

The Tollund Man is one of dozens of bog bodies from the Iron Age between about 2,500 and 1,500 years ago that have been found throughout Northern Europe. They were mummified in the bogs by the low oxygen levels, low temperatures and water turned acidic by the layers of decaying vegetation, or peat, that are found there.

A few seem to have been the victims of accidents, possibly people who drowned after falling into the water. But most, like the Tollund Man, were killed and placed in the bogs deliberately, with their bodies and features carefully arranged. Archaeologists think they were selected as human sacrifices, possibly to avert a pending disaster like a famine.

Miranda Aldhouse-Green, a professor emeritus of history, archaeology and religion at Cardiff University in the United Kingdom and the author of the book “Bog Bodies Uncovered: Solving Europe’s Ancient Mystery,” said the seeds of pale persicaria and other traces of threshing waste in the Tollund Man’s last porridge are further evidence that he was sacrificed.

“That reinforces the idea that he either was being shamed by being given something disgusting and horrible to eat, or it actually reflected the fact that society was in a downward spiral where food was scarce,” she said.

The idea that the human sacrifice victims had somehow been “shamed” before death was also reflected in their burials in bogs, instead of the usual burials in tombs and dry graves, she said.

The preservational properties of bogs were well known to people in the Iron Age — many archaeological objects from that time, including pieces of expensive pottery, were also deliberately deposited there — and it could be that the preservation of a bog body was intended to keep it from joining its ancestors. Bogs were seen as gateways to another realm.

“If you put a body in the bog, it would not decay — it would stay between the worlds of the living and the dead,” Aldhouse-Green said.

There’s evidence that threshing waste was added to the last meal of another Iron Age bog body found in Denmark in 1952, that of the Grauballe Man, who is also thought to have been killed as a human sacrifice. Although more than 100 bog bodies have now been found, only 12 are preserved well enough that their last meals can be analyzed, Nielsen said, and she hopes now to look for further evidence of the ritual practice.

The Tollund Man now occupies a glass case in a special gallery at the Silkeborg Museum, where Nielsen can see him almost every day.

“You’re standing face to face with a person from the past,” she said. “He’s 2,400 years old — that’s really amazing.”
