Samsung Galaxy S24 could use special Snapdragon processor

For the first time in history, Samsung will use a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset in all its Galaxy S series smartphones (Galaxy S23) sold worldwide. And this change comes after years of disappointments with its in-house Exynos processors. However, Samsung isn’t using the same Snapdragon chip everyone else uses. The South Korean firm will use a higher-clocked version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in the Galaxy S23, and this won’t be the last time it does that.

It is rumored that Samsung will continue to use special versions of Snapdragon chipsets in its high-end smartphones in the future. The chipset inside the Galaxy S23 is reportedly called ‘Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform For Galaxy,’ and the company will also use the Snapdragon For Galaxy series chipset in the Galaxy S24 series. Tipster Yogesh Brar claims that Samsung will continue to use Snapdragon For Galaxy processors until Samsung’s in-house chipsets are good enough to be as good as their Snapdragon counterparts.

If you don’t know already, Samsung’s Exynos chipsets (designed by Samsung’s System LSI division) haven’t been good enough over the past few years. They have always performed poorer than competing Snapdragon chipsets and had issues under sustained workloads and cellular performance, resulting in poorer battery life. So, Samsung’s smartphone division (Samsung MX) created its own team of engineers to design processors tailor-made for high-end Galaxy smartphones. The first chip from the new unit will reportedly debut with the Galaxy S25 in 2025.

Until that chipset is ready, the South Korean firm might use higher-clocked versions of flagship Snapdragon chips from Qualcomm. This could mean Galaxy buyers won’t complain about their smartphones’ performance and battery life. And when Samsung finally brings back its in-house chipset, it should be better than the competing Snapdragon processor to justify its existence. Qualcomm will then move over to other Android OEMs once its deal with Samsung ends.

If you are excited about the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-equipped Galaxy S23, you can pre-reserve it today and get up to $100 Samsung Store credit. The company will announce additional pre-order benefits after the Galaxy S23’s launch event.

Samsung may reduce number of models to 2 for Galaxy S24 series

Only standard and Ultra

Samsung is reviewing a plan to reduce the number of models for its flagship Galaxy S24 series launching next year, TheElec has learned.

The tech giant had so far launched three models for its flagship Galaxy S series; standard, Plus, and Ultra.

Samsung usually starts the development of a smartphone a year prior to launch. The company is planning to launch the Galaxy S23 series next month.

Currently, the Galaxy S24 project is called DM internally. It currently has two sub-projects DM1 and DM3. There should be a DM2 but this is noticeably absent.

Judging from the naming convention for prior S models, DM1 is likely the standard Galaxy S24 and DM3 Galaxy S24 Ultra.

It is highly likely that DM2 was planned but scrapped sometime afterward.

As the launch of the Galaxy S24 series is a year away, Samsung could add a DM2 later but this will need to be done timely.

If Samsung decides to go through without a Plus model for the Galaxy S24 series, it likely has to do with the current state of the smartphone market.

The market has matured and most consumers either buy the premium model or the budget model in developed countries. The Plus model from the iPhone 14 was also the most unpopular among the four models, representing this trend.

According to analyst firm GfK, in 2018, 1.47 million smartphones were sold. This dropped to 1.376 billion in 2019. In 2020, the first year of the pandemic, this numbered drop to 1.268 billion but bounced back slightly in 2021 to 1.29 billion, according to the firm.

Last year, this dropped to 1.243 billion again. GfK expects the shipment to be around 1.278 billion units this year.

Meanwhile, Samsung is also considering reducing the number of models in its A series, its mid-tier brand. Galaxy A1, A3, and A5 are likely to continue but A2 may be scrapped.

Samsung Galaxy S24 could get improved camera zoom performance

While we’re still waiting for the Galaxy S23 to go official, rumors about Samsung’s 2024 flagship smartphone have already started circulating. As always, we can expect Samsung to improve the camera performance of its high-end phones, and the same is true for the Galaxy S24.

Samsung phones already offer the best camera zoom performance in the industry, with the Galaxy S23 Ultra being the current champ. According to tipster Ice Universe, the Galaxy S24 Ultra will reportedly feature an even better telephoto camera sensor and improved zoom mechanism. However, there’s no clarity on what the new zoom solution actually is.

LG Innotek recently unveiled a new telephoto camera lens mechanism that offers a continuous zoom range from 4x to 9x. It means that you can capture images sharp images at all zoom levels, starting from 4x and ending at 9x, similar to dedicated digital or DSLR cameras. If Samsung can bring such a zoom camera on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, it could be incredible.

The tipster thinks that the primary camera on the Galaxy S24 Ultra could either be the same as its predecessor or only see a modest performance improvement. What new features do you expect to see on the Galaxy S24? Let us know in the comments section below.
