Buying a Samsung Galaxy S22? You Should Think Twice

Shopping for a new Samsung phone? It’s in your best interest to wait if you can.

Samsung’s Galaxy S23 lineup is expected to launch in Feburary, meaning the Galaxy S22 you’re thinking about purchasing could feel outdated in just a matter of weeks. Even if you just want to score a discount and don’t necessarily care about having the latest phone, there are good reasons to wait.

The biggest one, of course, is that the Galaxy S23 family will likely have Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, which should bring perks like better graphics and power efficiency. Reportedly leaked images published by the blog WinFuture also indicate a slightly different design might be in store.

The most significant update, however, is expected to arrive on the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which is rumored to get a 200-megapixel camera, according to often-correct leaker Ice Universe.

Those changes might not sound like much, especially when it comes to the regular Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus. But it’s still a good idea to wait if you can.

You’ll get more longevity out of the Galaxy S23 compared with an older phone like the Galaxy S22 for two simple reasons. One is that the processor is newer, so performance will remain speedy for a longer period of time. But the more important point is that it will likely get an extra year of software and security updates.

Samsung committed to offering four generations of Android updates and five years of security updates for the Galaxy S22 last year, and it will probably do the same for the Galaxy S23. The Galaxy S22 is already one year into that upgrade cycle.

You might be tempted to buy the Galaxy S22 anyway, since there are plenty of deals available through Samsung and other retailers. I’d encourage you to consider that similar discounts on the Galaxy S23 lineup may surface once the devices launch. Last year, for example, AT&T shaved $800 off the Galaxy S22 even when trading in an older, broken phone. Samsung also offered some bargains last year to promote the Galaxy S22 family at launch. Those who preordered the device before Feb. 24 were eligible to upgrade to the next storage tier and gain Samsung credit that could be applied toward the Galaxy Watch 4 or Samsung Freestyle projector.

There’s also a chance that we may see some Galaxy S22 discounts after the Galaxy S23 launches. Samsung released the Galaxy S21 FE in 2022 as a slightly cheaper alternative to the Galaxy S22, targeting the audience that would typically opt to save a few bucks by going for the prior year’s model. Since Samsung didn’t release a Galaxy S22 FE, perhaps it’ll keep a version of the Galaxy S22 around at a lower price.

Regardless, it’s a good idea to wait if you’re in a position to do so. Learning about what the Galaxy S23 has to offer and seeing which discounts are available will help you make a more informed decision. And of course, CNET will have plenty of advice on whether the Galaxy S23 is worth the upgrade once it launches.

Galaxy S22 FE apparently does exist after all and it’s coming soon with Exynos 2300

After many alleged delays, the Galaxy S21 FE was released in early January and there has been a lot of uncertainty about its successor so far, with the most recent reports casting doubt on its existence. The Galaxy S22 FE may not be dead though as a fresh rumor says that it’s coming soon.

Plot twist: Samsung was quietly working on the S22 FE

Budding leaker @OreXda has said that we should expect to see the Galaxy S22 FE and Galaxy Buds 2 Live soon and the rumor has been backed by known tipster Dohyun Kim.
All those rumors are starting to make sense now. @RGcloudS, who is also a new leaker, tweeted yesterday that the S22 FE would replace the Galaxy A74. They also said that the phone would be fueled by the Exynos 2300 and would rock a 108MP sensor.
This would be a big step up from the Galaxy S21 FE which has a 12MP main sensor and could help the S22 FE become one of the best camera phones of 2023.

RGcloudS also implied that the Galaxy S22 FE would cost about the same as the A73, which was only launched in few countries with a price of around $500. For reference, the Galaxy S21 FE had a starting price of $700.

It’s best to take these leaks with a heavy helping of salt as we haven’t seen a single concrete leak about the Galaxy S22 FE so far and we all know that Samsung isn’t the best at keeping secrets.

Galaxy S23 Ultra camera sample leaves S22 Ultra and Pixel 7 Pro in the dust

Last updated: November 13th, 2022 at 12:09 UTC+01:00

We’ve been hearing a lot about the Galaxy S23 Ultra and how its new camera system will blow all other phones out of the water. And now, an alleged sample photo captured with the unreleased Galaxy S23 Ultra appears to back up those claims.

The three photos of a pumpkin you see below were supposedly captured with the Galaxy S23 Ultra, the Galaxy S22 Ultra, and the Pixel 7 Pro, respectively. The photos originate from “I ice universe” on the Chinese social media network Weibo and appear to have been captured using primary cameras, after which they were manually zoomed in and cropped for a closer look at the details. In the case of the Galaxy S23 Ultra, this should be a sample shot of the 200MP main sensor.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra camera captures a lot more details

Color reproduction is similar across the Galaxy S22 Ultra and the Galaxy S23 Ultra. That is: they appear to saturate colors a little bit more than the Google Pixel 7 Pro to make the scenery look more lively and higher in contrast. Whether you prefer Samsung’s or Google’s approach is mostly subjective, but colors aside, the purpose of these three photos is to highlight the level of detail — hence they were zoomed in and cropped manually.

As far as details go, the Galaxy S23 Ultra blows the other two phones out of the water. Although the photos captured with the Galaxy S22 Ultra and the Pixel 7 Pro look good on their own, they almost look washed-out next to the Galaxy S23 Ultra sample shot. The latter shows many more details on the pumpkin, maintaining many more of the imperfections that make this pumpkin unique.

Assuming that this really is a sample photo captured with the Galaxy S23 Ultra, keep in mind that the phone is not out yet. Which means it’s running pre-release firmware. The camera software may get even better before the phone hits the shelves next year.

Samsung reportedly intends to announce the Galaxy S23 Ultra in early January or the first week of February 2023. According to previous leaks, the Galaxy S23 Ultra will feature a 200MP primary sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide shooter, and two 10MP telephoto cameras, one with 3x optical zoom and the other with a 10x folded zoom element.

Samsung Galaxy S22 is now getting stable Android 13 update in the US

Last week, Samsung released the stable Android 13 update to the Galaxy S22. However, the update was limited to Asian and European countries. A few days later, the stable update also reached the carrier-locked Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and the Galaxy S22 Ultra in the US. Now, even the unlocked variant of smartphones have started getting the update.

The Android 13 update for the carrier-unlocked versions of the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and the Galaxy S22 Ultra comes with firmware version S90xU1UEU2BVJA. The update brings One UI 5.0, bringing a revamped UI design to the smartphones. The new software also brings improved widgets, stacked widgets, better privacy, improved security, and faster performance. It is still using the October 2022 security patch.

If you have an unlocked version of the Galaxy S22 series smartphone in the US, you can now download and install the stable One UI 5.0 update on your device by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping Download and install. Alternatively, you can download the new firmware file from our firmware database and flash it manually.

What’s new in Galaxy S22’s Android 13 (One UI 5.0) update?

Samsung’s One UI 5.0 beta update for the Galaxy S22 brings a revamped UI design, featuring the expanded Color Palette feature, inspired by Google’s Material You design language. The update also brings Stacked Widgets, a tweaked design for the notifications area with bigger icons, and multitasking gestures. It also brings the Connected Devices section, where you can see all the settings related to accessories and connected devices.

The South Korean firm has also brought privacy and security features under one roof, making it easier to take a glance and their security. There are per-app language settings, improved accessibility features, newer emojis, more keyboard layouts and languages, and improved search and sorting in stock apps. You can also extract text from images in the Gallery app or through the live view from the Camera app. Based on the selected text, One UI also displays suggested actions.

The Camera app has been improved. It now has a simpler UI design and offers Histogram in the Pro Mode. There is a new watermarking option, too. Bixby has improved performance and understanding of natural language. Bixby Routines have been renamed to Modes & Routines, and Modes is easier to use.

Other features include the ability to disable RAM Plus, improved Digital Wellbeing, Edge Panel improvements, and the Wi-Fi Diagnostics Tool. Samsung has also made it easier to edit images and videos. You can add various emojis, stickers, text styles, animations, and transitions.

Galaxy S22 update lets you take better pictures of, well, the galaxy

Samsung is taking night photography to the next level by updating the Galaxy S22’s camera with a new Astrophoto feature plus the ability to fuse shots into one.

Other smartphones have a “night mode” of sorts that allows the device to take better pictures in low-light environments. But there’s never really been a concerted push toward astrophotography.

You have to use certain tricks and equipment to take good-quality pictures of the night sky. Samsung is addressing these shortcomings with new features designed to make night photography easier to do (opens in new tab) and more fun via the aforementioned Astrophoto. The company even claims you’ll have “top-grade professional” quality images without the extra equipment.

New beta features

Astrophoto will be available through Expert RAW, an app on the Galaxy S22 line that lets people shoot photos in the high-quality RAW format plus configure the camera’s Pro settings. Samsung didn’t offer many details but mentioned using the device’s “advanced AI segmentation technology and multi-frame processing” to take pictures over a period of time. By the sound of things, you have to keep the phone still for a little while as it photographs.

There will be a Sky Guide in the app (opens in new tab) pointing out the locations of constellations, solar systems, and even nebulas in the night sky by drawing them on screen.

As for the image meshing feature alluded to earlier, that will come in the form of Multiple Exposures. The tool allows the S22 to shoot multiple images and overlay them over one another like a filter to create some cool-looking abstract pictures (opens in new tab)

Besides Astrophoto, Samsung provided some preview images and videos for the upcoming Camera Assistant update an app that seeks to take the guesswork out of smartphone photography. We get to see the differences between having Auto HDR on or off plus the speed of the faster shutter tool (opens in new tab).

Camera Assistant

Both Astrophoto and Multiple Exposures are currently in beta and only available on S22 phones running One UI 5 which currently only available through Verizon. A company representative told us they recommend updating to One UI 5 first before downloading the beta. If you’re one of the lucky few with access, you can join the beta by opening the Settings menu in Expert RAW and then selecting the Special Photo option.

For everyone else, the representative also said One UI 5 will be rolling out to more carriers over the coming days so be sure to keep an eye out for that update when it arrives. We also asked if there are plans to launch the beta onto older devices and will people see Astrophoto in the future Galaxy S23, but they couldn’t comment.

So it’s entirely possible an official launch isn’t the last time we see of Astrophoto. Enhancing night photography could be the future of smartphone cameras. It’ll be interesting to see if that’s the case.

Galaxy S22 gets astrophotography and multi-exposure camera features!

One of the main talking points of the Galaxy S22 during its launch was Samsung’s new “nightography” features. The company claimed that it hugely improved the low-light performance of its phones compared to previous-generation devices, so users can expect better images and videos in low-light conditions.

But still, the phones lack astrophotography camera features found on some competing high-end smartphones, including the Pixel lineup. And the company is now fixing the issue with its updated Expert RAW camera app.

Samsung’s updated Expert RAW camera app brings astrophotography to Galaxy S22

Samsung has announced that it is bringing astrophotography-related features to the Galaxy S22’s camera with the new Expert RAW and Camera Assistant apps. With the Expert RAW app’s Astrophoto feature, night photography enthusiasts can capture clear and bright photos of stars, constellations, and dark sky activity.

The new Sky Guide feature lets users pinpoint the location of constellations, groups of stars, and nebula. The camera’s advanced AI algorithms then use multi-segmentation and multi-frame processing to capture shots that look like they’re taken using much costlier and higher-end camera equipment.

The new app also offers the Multi-Exposure feature, which lets users capture multiple shots of the same scene and then overlay them on top of each other, resulting in standout images. Astrophoto and Multi-Exposure features can be accessed from the Special Photo section of the newer version of the Expert RAW camera app.

Camera Assistant app brings more advanced settings to the stock camera app

A few days ago, Samsung released the Camera Assistant app for the Galaxy S22. The company formally announced the app today. It brings the ability to enable or disable certain features in the stock camera app. For example, you can disable Auto HDR, a feature that was available in the stock camera app in older Galaxy phones, but it was later removed.

The app also allows you to disable automatic lens switching. In certain situations, even if you switch to 3x or 10x zoom, the phone uses the primary sensor and zooms in digitally. With the Camera Assistant app, you can force the camera to use the native zoom level and stop using digital zoom.

The app also lets you change the number of images that you want the camera app to capture while using the timer. You can also soften details in an image, record videos by long-pressing the shutter button in the Photo mode, and preview the camera viewfinder on an HDMI-connected monitor without the camera menu and buttons.

The app also lets you capture images faster using the Faster Shutton feature. This is particularly helpful while capturing images of fast-moving subjects like babies, pets, sports, and vehicles. If you enable this feature, image quality may take a hit (since fewer frames are captured), but you get a non-blurry, sharp image.

Stable Galaxy S22 Android 13 One UI 5 update rolling out in Italy

Update: It looks like the release of One UI 5.0 and Android 13 in Italy was a false alarm, as we have yet to see actual evidence of anyone getting the over-the-air update. We’ll let you know when more information is available.

Original story follows:

Samsung has released five beta versions of One UI 5.0 to the Galaxy S22, and it made it official during its SDC 2022 keynote that it will release the stable version of the One UI 5.0 by the end of this month. Now, it is being reported that the South Korean firm has released the stable update to the Galaxy S22.

According to a few reports, Samsung has released the stable Android 13 update to the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and the Galaxy S22 Ultra with firmware version ending BVJ4. The update seems to have been released in Italy, which is a country where the One UI 5.0 Beta program wasn’t even launched. We are yet to get more confirmation on this.

If you are a Galaxy S22 series smartphone user in Italy, you can check for the Android 13 update on your device by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping Download and install. Once the firmware is available in our firmware database, we will update this article, and you can flash the firmware manually.

Samsung Galaxy S22 gets One UI 5.0 Beta 5 update with bug fixes

Two months ago, Samsung released the One UI 5.0 beta update to the Galaxy S22 for the first time. Since then, the South Korean firm has released three more beta updates with feature additions and bug fixes. Yesterday, we reported that Samsung could release the fifth and final version of One UI 5.0 beta update to the Galaxy S22 series, and the company has done just that.

The fifth One UI 5.0 beta update has been released for the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and Galaxy S22 Ultra in China. The new update has firmware version ending ZVJA and has a download size of 471.16MB (for Galaxy S22 Ultra).

Galaxy S22 One UI 5.0 beta update removes Bixby Text Call, fixes multiple bugs

Samsung’s official changelog claims that the company has fixed various bugs, including the ones that forced closed the Galaxy Watch plugin, caused camera autofocus failure and poor image quality, and restarted the phone.

The new software also fixes an issue that barred users from adding fingerprints. Some people also complained about the missing phone unlock sound, and Samsung has fixed that issue with the latest update. Other issues included the voice being loud even after the call volume was reduced, the wallpaper being incomplete, the Close All option missing from the multitasking menu, and the app being forced closed when editing images. Those issues have been resolved.

Samsung said that it removed the Bixby Text Call feature from the new One UI 5.0 beta update. The Bixby Text Call feature, which was announced last week, uses AI to convert voice (on the call) to text and displays that on the screen. Users can then type the text as a reply to the caller, and Bixby will convert that text into audio and transmits it to the person on the other side of the call. This way, a user doesn’t have to talk or listen to engage with a voice call.

Reports also claim that the new beta version of One UI 5.0 brings smoother animations. Apparently, the frame drops have reduced, and the animations are similar to the Galaxy Z Flip 4 running One UI 4.1.1.

One UI 5.0 Beta 5 could be the last beta update before the stable One UI 5.0 release

This could be the final beta version of One UI 5.0, and it could be released in other markets, including Germany, India, the UK, and the US, within the next few days. Samsung said that it will release the stable version of Android 13-based One UI 5.0 to the Galaxy S22 series before the end of this month.

Has Verizon really released stable Android 13 update to the Galaxy S22?

Samsung is currently testing the third One UI 5.0 beta version on the Galaxy S22 series. However, Verizon claims on its website that it has already released the stable Android 13 update to the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The carrier even published the complete One UI 5.0 changelog and screenshots of some of the new features. But has it actually released the update?

Well, a Redditor was able to download the update with firmware version S90xUSQS2AVI1, as mentioned on Verizon’s website. However, it’s not Android 13-based One UI 5.0, as claimed by Verizon. The changelog on the carrier’s website also mentions the October 2022 security patch, which Samsung released earlier today. We know that Samsung is currently testing Android 13 on its high-end phones and is yet to release a stable build.

So, it is possible that Verizon has published the wrong changelog by mistake. This also points towards a possibility of an earlier-than-usual release of the next major Android OS update for Samsung’s phones. The company might release the Android 13-based One UI 5.0 stable update to the Galaxy S22 series sometime next month.

Samsung has also been testing Android 13 on the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, Galaxy S20 Ultra, Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, Galaxy S21 Ultra, and the Galaxy A52. All these phones could get the stable Android 13 update within a couple of months.
