Henrik Stenson’s tenure as European Ryder Cup captain ‘brought to an end’

The Europeans are in the market for a new Ryder Cup captain.

This comes after Ryder Cup Europe officials announced Wednesday that Henrik Stenson will not captain the home side next year in Italy, saying in a release that Stenson’s tenure as captain “has been brought to an end with immediate effect.”

“In light of decisions made by Henrik in relation to his personal circumstances, it has become clear that he will not be able to fulfill certain contractual obligations to Ryder Cup Europe that he had committed to prior to his announcement as captain … and it is therefore not possible for him to continue in the role of captain.”

Stenson loses Ryder Cup captaincy amid LIV buzz

The 46-year-old Stenson, who was unveiled as Europe’s 2023 captain in mid-March, revealed a few hours after Wednesday’s announcement that he had decided to join LIV Golf, beginning with next week’s event at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey. Stenson claimed that LIV had been supportive of his role as captain and that specific arrangements were made to ensure that he could fulfill both commitments had he been allowed to maintain his captaincy.

“While I disagree with this decision, for now it is a decision that I accept,” Stenson said. “I have huge respect and admiration for the Ryder Cup and those individuals behind it who I know are doing their utmost to act in the best interests of the historic event. I want to thank everyone I have worked with to date to prepare for Rome in 2023. I am hugely disappointed to not be allowed to continue in my role but wish you all the best in your ongoing preparations. It is a shame to witness the significant uncertainty surrounding the Ryder Cup, who will be eligible to play, etc. I sincerely hope a resolution between the tours and its members is reached soon and that the Ryder Cup can act as a mechanism for repair amongst various golfing bodies and their members.

“It goes without saying that I remain on hand to support Ryder Cup Europe in any way I can and very much hope the opportunity to represent Team Europe in some capacity will come my way again at some point in the future.”

While Ryder Cup Europe has yet to ban players who have defected to compete in the Saudi-backed rival league, it’s been reported that Stenson’s captain’s contract included language that he could not support or promote “other properties,” which included other tours, leagues, series or competitions.

Stenson addressed those contractual obligation in March: “There’s been a lot of speculation back and forth, but I am fully committed to the captaincy and to Ryder Cup Europe and the job at hand. The captain does sign a contract. He’s the only one that does that. Players and vice captains don’t. But the captain has an agreement, and those agreements are between Ryder Cup Europe and the captain, so I’m fully committed to my role as a captain and working hard toward the result we want in Rome.”

Henrik Stenson’s Ryder Cup captaincy is officially over, really before it ever started. And now, Ryder Cup Europe is left scrambling to find a replacement.

Stenson said Wednesday that his decision to join LIV came down to a variety of factors, and he still planned on “supporting multiple tours in any way I can moving forward” so long as he wasn’t restricted from doing so. The PGA Tour has already banned its members who have defected to LIV.

“Clearly a part of my decision to play in LIV golf events has been commercially driven,” Stenson explained, “but the format, schedule and caliber of player were also significant factors. I am committed to growing the game and using the game as a force for good.”

Ryder Cup Europe said that confirmation of its new captain “will be made in due course” and that it would not be commenting further “on any aspect of the process until that time.”

As for a potential replacement: Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and Graeme McDowell were once considered good bets to captain teams one day, but all three have since signed with LIV. Luke Donald, Paul Lawrie and even past captain Thomas Bjorn, one of Stenson’s vice-captains, are all options.

Last year’s captain, Padraig Harrington, said earlier this month that he didn’t see himself captaining another squad.

Winona Ryder reflects on her breakup from Johnny Depp during the ’90s: ‘My ‘Girl, Interrupted’ real life’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Winona Ryder is looking back at her relationship with Johnny Depp.

The pair began dating after meeting at the New York premiere of “Great Balls of Fire!” in 1989. They went on their first date two months later. Then five months after the first date, the two Hollywood stars got engaged. They appeared in the 1990 film “Edward Scissorhands” and Depp even got a tattoo that read “Winona Forever.”

But in June 1993, the couple called it quits. Depp famously altered his body art to “Wino Forever.”

Ryder, who is on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar’s July 2022 digital issue, called their breakup and the Hollywood culture at the time “my ‘Girl, interrupted’ real life,” referring to her 1999 movie about mental health struggles.

The 50-year-old told the outlet that an “incredible” therapist suggested she try picturing her younger self and being kinder to her.

“I remember, I was playing this character who ends up getting tortured in a Chilean prison [for the 1994 film ‘The House of the Spirits’],” she recalled. “I would look at these fake bruises and cuts on my face [from the shoot], and I would struggle to see myself as this little girl. ‘Would you be treating this girl like you’re treating yourself?’ I remember looking at myself and saying, ‘This is what I’m doing to myself inside.’ Because I just wasn’t taking care of myself.”

“I’ve never talked about it,” Ryder admitted. “There’s this part of me that’s very private. I have such, like, a place in my heart for those days. But for someone younger who grew up with social media, it’s hard to describe.”

Ryder also noted that she “definitely retreated” from the tabloids in the early 2000s.

“I was in San Francisco,” she told the outlet. “But I also wasn’t getting offers. I think it was a very mutual break. It’s so interesting when you look at the early aughts. It was a kind of cruel time. There was a lot of meanness out there… And then I remember coming back to LA and – it was a rough time. And I didn’t know if that part of my life was over.”

In 2016, Depp’s ex-wife Amber Heard got a domestic violence restraining order against the actor amid their divorce. Ryder, who is known for keeping mum about her personal life, told Time magazine that Depp was never abusive toward her during their relationship, which had ended decades prior. Depp, now 59, has long denied the allegations.

“I can only speak from my own experience, which was wildly different than what is being said,” Ryder explained at the time. “He was never, never that way toward me. Never abusive at all toward me. I only know him as a really good, loving, caring guy who is very, very protective of the people that he loves.”

“I wasn’t there. I don’t know what happened. I’m not calling anyone a liar,” Ryder continued. “I’m just saying, it’s difficult and upsetting for me to wrap my head around it. Look, it was a long time ago, but we were together for four years, and it was a big relationship for me. Imagine if someone you dated when you were – I was 17 when I met him – was accused of that. It’s just shocking. I have never seen him be violent toward a person before.”

Ryder also described being “depressed” and “going through something” during the 1990s, around the time that she and Depp broke up.

“You can’t look to the industry to validate you as a person because that can just lead to incredible disappointment. I will admit I was guilty of that when I was younger because you get caught up in it, surrounded by people that are telling you that it’s the most important thing, and you’re young and you believe it.”

Winona Ryder Thriller Fizzles Out

The Cow offers a solid initial horror premise, but the mystery takes nonsensical routes that ultimately don’t work. Co-writer/director Eli Horowitz and co-writer Matthew Derby are a bit too on-the-nose for their own good. The Cow is the type of thriller that believes itself to be much smarter than it is, as the audience is always two steps ahead of the narrative’s reveals.

Eli Horowitz’s ‘The Cow’ is a mystery thriller

Winona Ryder as Kath | SXSW

Kath (Winona Ryder) drives to a remote cabin in the redwoods along with her boyfriend. However, they immediately discover that a mysterious younger couple is already in the cabin. It turns out that the rental was double-booked, but it’s already dark outside and there isn’t any cell phone reception. As a result, they decide to share the cabin for just one night.

The Cow picks up the next morning, where Kath wakes up in bed alone. Her boyfriend simply vanished along with the young woman from the other couple. She becomes desperate to find out what happened and why her boyfriend would break up with her in this fashion. However, she would never guess the truth in her wildest dreams.

A film about time and adventure

The characters in The Cow constantly talk about adventure and taking chances in life. Kath and her boyfriend’s age gap plays into this, as they try to operate on the same level. Each time they hesitate to do something risky, such as play a romantic board game with the strangers they just met, they ask one another if it’s “too much adventure” for them. They both have something to prove to one another.

Horowitz tells the story in a non-linear fashion. The Cow jumps back and forth in time, progressively feeding more of the story to the audience. They provide context to their relationship and the sudden strange sequence of events. Kath follows a trail of clues, wanting to finally confront her now-ex boyfriend about his immature and cruel way of ending the relationship.

The Cow provides social commentary on both age and time. Multiple character dynamics and their interactions lend to these two topics. Time plays into each of the characters’ lives in varying ways, but it’s the obstacle itself that they all have in common. Time isn’t on their side and they’re all desperate for answers.

‘The Cow’ flatlines with a serious lack of thrills

Kath and her boyfriend arrive at the cabin at night when it’s already dark outside. As a result, Horowitz provides an eerie atmosphere, where the redwoods aren’t even visible. The cabin is the only visible space, creating a claustrophobic tone that traps the audience into the frame. Unfortunately, he doesn’t take advantage of this beyond the first act.

The Cow makes the mistake of focusing on the past in its non-linear storytelling. The cabin provides the most gripping element of the film, but once the narrative takes the characters out of the area, the film loses its initial tension. Horowitz gives too much away early on, making the story’s big revelation fairly obvious fairly quickly.

There’s a significantly better film buried here. The first act establishes an intriguing premise that truly could go anywhere. However, it opts for the thriller mystery elements, rather than the clear horror story that is much more compelling. The Cow begins to flatline when the first discovery is unveiled and never manages to recover.

Daniel Jacobs vs. John Ryder – LIVE BoxingScene Scorecard

Former two-time middleweight world champion DANIEL JACOBS enters the ring for the first time in nearly two years this weekend, stepping up to face JOHN RYDER live on DAZN from the iconic Alexandra Palace.

JACOBS’ last competitive bout came in November 2020 with a split-decision victory over Gabriel Rosado, as the ‘Miracle Man’ looks to continue his upwards trajectory in the division after a second career loss to Canelo Alvarez back in 2019.

RYDER comes into the fight on a similar two fight week streak, most recently stopping Jozef Jurko after having lost out to Callum Smith for the WBA and The Ring super-middleweight titles back in November 2019. The London native will be looking to propel himself towards another world title shot after the devasting loss against Smith.

Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka ‘wanted to play together,’ hug after Ryder Cup win

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. — Things went so well for the U.S. Ryder Cup team this week that by the end of the 19-9 blowout victory, Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka were hugging. Several times.

The superstars — who had a months-long spat play out on social media, causing U.S. captain Steve Stricker to issue an edict that it be put aside for Ryder Cup week — were all smiles Sunday.

The U.S. won big and both players contributed. Koepka won his singles match over Bernd Wiesberger and DeChambeau took his over Sergio Garcia. The pair celebrated a much-needed American victory in a competition that has often gone the other way.

Koepka finished 2-2 for the week and DeChambeau was 2-0-1. While the rest of the team sang “Why Can’t We Be Friends,” Justin Thomas coaxed the two into posing with the Ryder Cup.

“I think before this is all over we should have Brooks and Bryson hug in the middle of the room,” Thomas said during the postmatch news conference. “To prove how much of a team we are, they are going to hug.”

Stricker acknowledged afterward that the two players had asked to play together.

“Speechless,” Stricker said. “These guys all came together. They had a mission this week. Brooks and Bryson wanted to play together. That’s how much they all came together. This is a new era for USA golf.”

Rory McIlroy breaks down in tears after Ryder Cup struggles

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. — Rory McIlroy, the 32-year-old from Northern Ireland, has won four major championships and has all the money he’ll ever need.

Yet McIlroy — who was 0-3 at the Ryder Cup before winning his singles match against Xander Schauffele on Sunday — broke down into tears in greenside TV interviews at Whistling Straits, apologizing to his teammates for his performance over the last week.

“I’ve never really cried or cared about what I’ve done as an individual; I couldn’t give a (bleep),” McIlroy said through tears Sunday, later apologizing to the interviewer for cursing. “I love being a part of this team. I love my teammates so much and I should have done more for them this week.

“I just can’t wait to get another shot at this. It is by far the best experience in golf and I hope there are boys and girls watching this today who aspire to play in this event or the Solheim Cup. No matter what happens later, I am proud of every single player, I’m proud of the captain and vice-captains.”

McIlroy, after losing his first match in Friday morning foursomes, was benched for the first time in his six-time Ryder Cup career, ending a streak of 26 consecutive matches. He then went on to lose twice on Saturday, which extended his losing streak to five matches, dating back to 2018 in France.

“It’s been a tough week,” he said.
