Super Rush has finally fixed golf

Mario Golf: Super Rush

Every Friday, A.V. Club staffers kick off our weekly open thread for the discussion of gaming plans and recent gaming glories, but of course, the real action is down in the comments, where we invite you to answer our eternal question: What Are You Playing This Weekend?

Golf isn’t necessarily a bad game, as evidenced by the fact that it’s been a popular hobby all around the world for generations. But it is a stupid game, one that is only redeemed through the use of golf carts, or by stripping away all of the boring stuff where nothing happens and replacing it with windmills and waterfalls and pirates. Until now! Last week, Nintendo released Mario Golf: Super Rush, the latest entry in its ongoing series of Super Mario-themed sports games, and the developers at Camelot seem to have finally fixed mankind’s most boring sport.

This is all thanks to a couple of twists to the regular golf formula: One is that Super Rush allows you and your co-golfers to all play at the same time, playing together in split-screen without needing to patiently wait your turn, or quietly sitting back while your opponents take putt after putt after putt. The other innovation, and one that truly deserves to be integrated into “real” golf, is called Speed Golf. In that mode, it’s all about who gets to the hole first, and also you have to physically run to your ball rather than being automatically transported to it like in most other golf video games. You can even push your opponents out of the way or try to beat them to special powerups while running, and each character has special abilities that can known opponents or their balls out of the way, giving everything that Mario Kart-style edge of constantly being a second away from complete disaster.

It all could probably stand to be just a little wackier—even though the overtly Mario Kart-y battle mode is too hectic and complex to be anything but a chaotic mess—but the game in general is a testament to how good Nintendo can be at injecting some Mario personality into these sports games. This is still recognizably golf, even with some of the wackier options turned on, it’s just a superior version of golf that makes every other version of golf look… you know, stupid.

Also, Super Rush introduces a fun new line of Mushroom Kingdom fashion, with most of the characters putting on garish golf outfits for their time hitting the links. Bowser has a terrible red and black Guy Fieri number, Peach has a nice golf skirt, and even Toad gets in on the fun by putting a little golfer hat on top of his regular mushroom hat. Oh, wait, Nintendo said it’s actually part of his head and not a hat a few years ago, so his Mario Golf: Super Rush hat is probably just a canonical in-universe confirmation of that fact, which is less funny than it being a hat on a hat. (That one’s for you screenwriters out there.)

Rush Limbaugh remembered by Sean Hannity, ‘Fox & Friends’ hosts: Legend in ‘crosshairs’ of cancel culture

Fox News host Sean Hannity remembered conservative radio legend Rush Limbaugh in an appearance Thursday morning on “Fox & Friends,” saying Limbaugh experienced what is now known as “cancel culture” throughout his storied career.

“Before we had the term ‘snowflake’ or ‘woke’ or cancel culture, talk radio has always been in the crosshairs of cancel culture,” said Hannity, remembering how Limbaugh injected humor and irreverence into his show with phrases like “talent on loan from God” and “half my brain tied behind my back just to make it fair.”

Hannity said he does not support boycotts of any kind, even for left-wing voices he strongly disagrees with, applauding the way Limbaugh explained the tenets of conservatism on his show each day in a way listeners could understand.

RUSH LIMBAUGH’S BROTHER POSTS MESSAGE AFTER RADIO ICON’S DEATH

“That was Rush Limbaugh and so many generations of Americans will miss that voice that educated all of us and reminded us of these great principles that made America great,” he said, going on to recall a 2009 interview with Limbaugh where he stressed his belief that “freedom will never go out of style.”

Hannity said conservatives should try to make that point to voters consistently going forward, pointing out how many people come to America for the opportunities the country provides.

“You can never replace Babe Ruth, but I’d even take it a step further, [Limbaugh] was Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Hank Aaron, Derek Jeter, and everyone in-between,” Hannity said Wednesday on Fox News shortly after Limbaugh’s death was announced.

“He loved this country, he was a patriot and he loved his family and he loved his life.”

MARK LEVIN REACTS TO DEATH OF RUSH LIMBAUGH

Limbaugh’s wife, Kathryn, made the announcement on his radio show.

“Losing a loved one is terribly difficult, even more so when that loved one is larger than life,” she said. “Rush will forever be the greatest of all time.”

TRUMP JOINS ‘HANNITY, ‘REVEALS STORY BEHIND LIMBAUGH MEDAL OF FREEDOM

The radio icon learned he had Stage IV lung cancer in January 2020 and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Trump at the State of the Union address days later.

Seattle hospitals rush to dole out 1,300 Covid vaccine doses in the middle of the night | Seattle

Seattle hospitals rushed out Covid-19 vaccines to hundreds of people in the middle of the night after a freezer they were being stored in failed.

It’s not clear what exactly caused the freezer failure Thursday night, but the Northwest and Montlake campuses of the UW Medical Center and the Swedish Medical Center received more than 1,300 vaccine doses that needed to be used before they expired at 5.30am Friday, the Seattle Times reported.

Word of the unexpected doses spread on social media, and a line of hopeful vaccine recipients snaked out the clinic door and through a parking lot at UW Medical Center-Northwest.

At Swedish Medical Center, a hundred people lined up. The hospital tweeted at 11.59pm that it had 588 doses to give out, and by 12.30am, all the appointment slots had been taken.

At the UW Medical Center-Northwest, assistant administrator Jenny Brackett walked along the crowd calling out and asking if anyone was over 65. Brackett said the hospital was doing its best to vaccinate those eligible, but that the main objective was to get it into arms and avoid waste. But many of those who showed up were too young and healthy to qualify under Washington state’s current prioritization categories for vaccine distribution.

One woman plucked from the crowd at UW Medical Center-Northwest, Tyson Greer, 77, said she had been waking up at 1am or 3am for more than a week to search online for coveted vaccination appointments. She finally received a shot at 1am Friday.

Many of the staffers working the vaccination clinic had been at work since 7am Thursday, said Keri Nasenbeny, associate chief nursing officer.

When she received word about the freezer failure, she called several nurses, who in turn recruited pharmacists and other volunteers. A Seattle firefighter seemed to show up out of nowhere to help, and a hospital staffer’s boyfriend helped manage the queue.

Those who scored the vaccine were appreciative. Sarah Leyden, 57, got word the shots were available from her wife, a hairdresser, who heard from a client who is a nurse. “I just got lucky,” Leyden said.

Anyone who received a first shot Thursday night will also receive the second shot in the two-dose regimen, regardless of age, said Cassie Sauer, president of the Washington State Hospital Association.
