Elden Ring Players Are At War With AFK Rune Farmers

Image: FromSoftware

Elden Ring has a new rune farming strategy that revolves around hiding in seeminglyunreachable parts of the map until your opponent dies or gets bored and leaves. Now, players who just wanted a good old fashion PVP showdown are finding new ways to fight back. The results are entertaining and brutal, but will they be enough to stem the tide of Elden Ring’s latest exploit?

There are few things gamers love more than not actually playing and still getting rewarded for it. AFK farms remain all the rage, and Elden Ring, it turns out, is not immune. More and more players have recently reported getting dragged into PVP invasions where their opponent is MIA, and it’s pissing them off. Some are hopeful developer FromSoftware will eventually patch out the apparent exploit, but in the meantime players are taking matters into their own hands.

So how does Elden Ring’s latest AFK rune farm work? The most popular version involves heading to the First Step spawn where the game begins, and going over to the nearby cliff. From there, using their mount Torrent, players can double jump down to a lower ledge. They then use Furlcalling Finger Remedy followed by Taunter’s Tongue to lure invaders into their game, and keep their White Cipher Ring turned on to summon hunters to fight on their behalf. The result is that most opponents either 1) leave because they can’t find the AFK famer, 2) die trying to reach them on the side of the cliff, or 3) get killed by one of the allied hunters.

Another version of the exploit involves using Torrent to climb the tallest building at the Site of Grace. Because mounts can’t be summoned once PVP combat begins, it makes them basically unreachable by anyone else. For added security, some AFK rune farmers also like to use Mimic’s Veil to transform into an object that opponents can’t use auto-targeting to lock onto. As you would expect, YouTube is already flush with videos called things like “NEW 100 MILLION RUNE AFK FARM IN ELDEN RING!” and propagators of the technique say they’ve managed to farm over 1 million runes an hour. Others say the rate, even at very high levels, is closer to 100,000. But free runes is free runes, and more and more players are trying to get theirs.

But as the exploit has gotten more popular, so have ways to combat it. The Elden Ring subreddit is currently filling up with short clips of players using creative new strategies to kill the AFK farmers. One involves lunging off the cliff and then using Agheel’s Flame in midair to transform into a dragon and murder them on the way down. It’s also possible to use ballistas to knock them off the ledge or kill them outright. The Hand of Malenia katana has also proven effective. Because of its length and unique swinging animations, players can actually use it to navigate over to the ledge themselves without even needing Torrent.

As GamesRader points out, the result of these new strategies is that now in some cases it’s the AFK farmers who are getting farmed. “With my dragon breath strat and the physick I still keep all the souls and don’t have to go bother picking them up every time I die after killing the host,” wrote one player on the subreddit. “Have 50+ rune arcs just this morning in my invasions lol there’s a looooot of people trying this exploit so you can max out your inventory with arcs if you want to.”

Other players have started thinking even farther outside the box. “I’ve just been AFK’ing alongside them,” wrote another player on the subreddit. “I throw on a good movie or some funny YouTube vids and wait until I hear the sound of my free Rune Arc.” Elden Ring players are nothing if not committed.

Rune Factory Director intends to include same-sex relationships in future titles

Rune Factory 5 brings about change to the series’ relationship system with the inclusion of same-sex couples. This has been received very well by the community, and Rune Factory 5 director Shiro Maekawa believes it will be a feature that will carry on to future titles.

“We received a lot of feedback from players who wanted the ability to pursue same-sex relationships from the start, so we made sure to include them in Rune Factory 5,” said Maekawa to Nintendo Everything in an interview published on March 26. “I think it’ll be a standard feature in any future games.”

However, same-sex relationships aren’t included in the Japanese version, despite bing pushed heavily by localization company XSEED Games. After many years of requests from fans, the employees of XSEED pushed heavily on the feature and added new cutscenes made by the developer Marvelous as well as provided new lines to include gender-neutral terms.

“This was something we had argued to be included for many years, and we’re so grateful to everyone who helped make it a reality,” XSEED said in a blog post to its fans.

Maekawa also expressed interest in including an English voice acting commentary option in future games. Currently, only the Japanese cast has one, and it’s included in the western release of Rune Factory 5. “It’d be nice to include commentary from the English cast as well someday,” said Maekawa.

Despite a few faults like a bad frame rate, Rune Factory 5 has a unique charm that will likely please long-time fans of the genre. The inclusion of same-sex relationships makes it even better.

Round Up: The Rune Factory 5 Reviews Are In

Image: Marvelous (XSEED)

Kirby is not the only one with a major release this week, Switch fans in the west can finally get their hands on Rune Factory 5.

Now that the game’s been out here for a few days, we’ve gathered up a handful of reviews. If you haven’t already checked out our Nintendo Life review of Rune Factory 5, be sure to take a look. We said you’ll find something to love in this game if you enjoy RPGs and farm sims, but did notice some performance issues – awarding it 7/10 stars.

So, what did other reviews have to say? IGN wasn’t quite as forgiving – scoring it 6/10:

“Rune Factory 5 is entertainingly chewable fodder thanks to the soil fertilized by its predecessors, but its attempted leap to a 3D world leaves it struggling with lots of frustrating technical issues.”

Digital Trends was all for the farmer’s life – awarding it 3.5/5 stars, but wasn’t quite sure how accessible it would be to newcomers:

Rune Factory 5 should appeal to longtime fans or those who like games that overlap between a couple of categories, including farming sims, dating sims, and JRPGs. I can’t see it having much mainstream appeal, though, due to the barriers it puts up for newcomers.”

RPGamer said it was a pretty chill experience, delivering a final score of 3.5/5 stars:

“Rune Factory has always been a chill experience with some light action RPG elements to it, and that’s exactly what the newest title delivers.”

The Mako Reactor gave the game a respectable 7.5/10 but felt it needed a little more time to reach its full potential:

“Rune Factory 5 is an ambitious entry in the series that does many things well, but one that suffers thanks to a plethora of technical and structural issues. Despite it building on Rune Factory 4 in some nice ways, Rune Factory 4 Special remains one of the best games in a very long time while Rune Factory 5 feels like it needed more time to reach its full potential.”

And Digitally Downloaded compared it to comfort food – awarding it 4/5 stars:

“Rune Factory 5 plays things pretty conservatively, and it’s the better for it. It’s a comfort food kind of experience, and while this might cost it on store shelves given that it has been released at the tail end of so many excellent, intelligent, innovative, and big RPGs, it’s a game of simple delights and pleasant experiences. Sometimes, that’s enough.”

Elden Ring: YouTubers find rune farming exploits

When you first start Elden Ring, you don’t have much in the way of armor — at least for some classes. To put it bluntly, you are weak in a harsh world. The way that players level up and increase stats, of course, is by collecting runes. Runes are part-experience points and part currency, and to get powerful, you’ll need to collect a lot of them.

Collecting runes is something that’ll happen throughout the game, even if you aren’t particularly trying. Certain activities and enemies — like clearing guards at Gatefront Ruins — will award a bunch of runes. But if you want a lot of runes really fast, you’ll have to turn to farming. Rune farming.

Naturally, YouTube is already ablaze with some exploits and creative methods to farm runes. YouTuber TagBackTV created a video on a method that can earn players 585,600 runes per hour, he said.

He outlines the method in the video, but essentially, there’s a specific area where the player is able to trigger a boulder. The boulder will roll off the edge of a nearby cliff and gain players thousands of runes. Then you refresh back to the site of grace and do this again. And again and again and again. And there’s no fighting!

Arekkz Gaming has another video for an early Elden Ring rune farm. This one requires some fighting, however, but it’s a relatively simple process for getting lots of runes in a short amount of time. Each kill in this method grants 1,000 runes each.

Polygon, too, has a guide for Elden Ring rune farming. Our guide focuses largely on West Limgrave, the starting location for Elden Ring.

If you’re looking something that’s less like an exploit and more like an optimized route straight out of Elden Ring’s gate, Boomstick Gaming created a video with instructions for a 15-minute path to being overpowered.

Runes! Runes everywhere!

Novak Djokovic Overcomes Hiccup To Beat Holger Rune At US Open | ATP Tour

It was not a perfect start to his chase for the Grand Slam, but Novak Djokovic escaped unscathed on Tuesday evening and reached the second round of the US Open.

After a second-set hiccup, the World No. 1 beat #NextGenATP star Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-1 in two hours and 15 minutes in front of a raucous Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd. The Danish teen suffered from cramps in the final two sets.

“It’s tough to talk about [the] third and fourth sets because he barely moved. [From] my side, I started great. Played a really, really good first set. After that, I don’t know, I was 4-3 serving in the second set. Everything was working well, but then I just lost the first serve,” Djokovic said. “Credit to him for fighting. He had the crowd behind him. It was tough to play in my first match, even though I had tonnes of experience playing on this court, for him it was the first one.

“Still, you get nerves. You still are feeling a little bit rusty at the beginning. Obviously I’m pleased with the way I finished the match. Again, it was not a fair battle on the court with his unfortunate injury and cramping.”

Djokovic is now six match wins from becoming the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to claim all four major titles in one season. The three-time US Open champion will next face Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor.

Entering the match, 18-year-old Rune told ATPTour.com that, “I have a lot of belief in myself even though I’m up against the World No. 1.” The Danish teen showed it by playing courageously in the second set and taking a tense tie-break, during which he rallied the New York fans on his side.

Rune On Playing Djokovic: ‘This Is Where I Want To Be’

But ultimately, he was unable to sustain his aggressive play long enough to trouble the top seed further. Rune was visited by the trainer on multiple occasions in the final two sets to receive treatment on his upper legs for apparent cramping. Djokovic took advantage by hitting 55 winners to just 30 unforced errors.

“Unfortunately, my fitness let me down. I started cramping already in the beginning of the third set. From there on, it was tough,” Rune said. “I knew if I [wanted] to win, I really had to fight for every point. With my body at this point, it was impossible.”

After match point the 20-time major winner, who can pass Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal for most Slam titles with a trophy at the end of this fortnight, had a lengthy exchange with Rune at the net to give him encouragement.

“I just told him that he handled himself extremely well. He didn’t want to stop,” Djokovic said. “I thought he was going to stop [at] the end of the third. He just kept going with dignity, finished off the match. He deserved definitely my respect, the respect of a lot of people. He’s still very, very young, 18 years old. He’s got plenty of time ahead of him. I’m sure we’re going to see a lot of him in the future.”

Despite the defeat, Rune will never forget the match. The crowd even chanted “Rune!” in support of the teen.

“I never felt anything like this. It was [an] unbelievable feeling staying there. I tried to give the crowd something, fight for every point, be pumped and everything,” Rune said. “The crowd was unbelievable. I couldn’t have asked for more. I never tried anything like this. It was a pretty sick feeling.”

Djokovic’s next opponent, Griekspoor, battled past big-hitting German Jan-Lennard Struff 2-6, 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 after three hours and 38 minutes.

Did You Know?
Djokovic is now 16-0 in first-round matches at the US Open. The Serbian has not lost in the opening round at a major since the 2006 Australian Open, when he was No. 76 in the FedEx ATP Rankings.

CPAC: Hyatt Hotels says stage resembling Nazi rune is ‘abhorrent’ | CPAC

The Hyatt Hotels Corporation called symbols of hate “abhorrent” on Sunday after the design of a stage at the right-wing Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) at one of its hotels drew comparisons to a Norse rune used by Nazis during the second world war

High-profile Republicans including former president Donald Trump were attending the four-day event in Orlando, Florida, as conflict raged between Trump allies and establishment politicians trying to distance the party from him.

A photo of the CPAC stage went viral on social media on Saturday, with thousands of Twitter users sharing posts comparing its distinctive design to an othala rune, also known as an odal rune, one of many ancient European symbols that Nazis adopted to “reconstruct a mythic ‘Aryan’ past”, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

The ceiling of the conference room featured a lighting display in the same shape as the stage, according to Reuters photographs.

Hyatt said all aspects of conference logistics, including the stage design, were managed by the American Conservative Union, which organized the conference.

The comparisons were “outrageous and slanderous”, Matt Schlapp, chair of the American Conservative Union, said on Saturday. He added the organization had a “long standing commitment to the Jewish community” and that the conference featured several Jewish speakers.

In its statement on Sunday, Hyatt said: “We take the concern raised about the prospect of symbols of hate being included in the stage design at CPAC 2021 very seriously as all such symbols are abhorrent and unequivocally counter to our values as a company.”

Some Trump supporters who launched a deadly insurrection against the US Capitol on 6 January carried Confederate flags, which many Americans see as a symbol of oppression and slavery. Extremism experts said some of the rioters were members of white nationalist groups.

The rune was seen at the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017 that saw violent fights with counter-protesters and one civil rights activist killed when a neo-fascist drove his car into the crowd.

Joe Biden cited that event and Trump’s assessment at the time that there were “very fine people on both sides” as a factor in his motivation for running for the Democratic nomination, winning the presidency in November 2020.

Trump’s presence has dominated this year’s CPAC, with his supporters parading a larger-than-life golden statue of him through the lobby of the hotel.
