Retiring GOP Senator Knocks Trump’s ‘Unbelievably Terrible’ Campaign Rollout – Rolling Stone

Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA), whose twelve-year stint in Congress will end next month, said Sunday that former President Donald Trump hasn’t maintained his iron grip on the Republican Party due in part to Republicans’ underperformance in the midterms and the manner in which Trump launched his re-election bid.

Appearing on CNN State of the Union, Toomey elaborated on his closing piece of advice to his GOP colleagues, having said Thursday on the Senate floor that his party “can’t be about or beholden to any one man.”

Host Jake Tapper asked the retiring Senator if he believed Republicans “are increasingly receptive to that message,” and if Trump’s sway over the party is slipping.

“Absolutely I do,” Toomey replied. “First, I think his influence was waning — not as quickly as I had hoped it would — but I think it was waning. But the election outcome from last month I think dramatically accelerates the waning, and, frankly, his unbelievably terrible rollout of his re-election — his election campaign is also not helping him.”

As it happens, Republicans lost the race to fill Toomey’s seat, meaning Democrats will control the chamber with an outright majority and not have to depend on a tie-breaking vote by the vice president. The GOP did manage to win back the House, though by a much smaller margin than anticipated, causing House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) some headaches when it comes to corralling enough votes to become Speaker.

A week after the midterms — yet before the Senate runoff election in Georgia — Trump announced his candidacy during a lethargic speech from Mar-a-Lago. Since then, he demanded the “termination” of the Constitution to get his old job back, dined with a white supremacist and an antisemite, and shilled NFTs, a move that even some of his most loyal supporters couldn’t get behind. On top of that, Trump’s namesake organization was convicted on nine counts of tax fraud, and he has been losing major donors one by one.

Trending

Toomey specified that one example of what he viewed as the party’s willingness to move beyond Trump was the “impressive turnout of prominent Republicans who have been going to events like the [Republican Jewish Coalition’s] meeting in Las Vegas openly talking about themselves as candidates after Donald Trump had already made it clear he was running.” That event last month featured Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who, the day after Trump’s announcement, called for “leaders who are looking forward, not staring in the rearview mirror claiming victimhood.”

“It tells you that they perceive the Republican electorate to be much more open,” Toomey said. “And in my travels since the election around Pennsylvania, I’ve heard from many, many formerly very pro-Trump voters that they think it’s time for our party to move on. So, yes, I think that process is under way. It’s not a flip of a switch. It doesn’t happen overnight. [Trump] still has a significant following, that’s for sure. But I do think his influence is waning.”

Twitter relaunches ‘Twitter Blue’ after bungled November rollout

Twitter is relaunching its fraught “Twitter Blue” program a month after the bungled rollout of the subscription service under new owner Elon Musk.

“We’re relaunching @TwitterBlue on Monday — subscribe on web for $8/month or on iOS for $11/month to get access to subscriber-only features, including the blue checkmark,” Twitter’s official account tweeted late Saturday afternoon.

In a thread, the company rattled off additional benefits users would receive, including the ability to edit tweets, reader mode, and a blue check mark following a review.

Twitter also clarified that the second “official” label would soon be replaced by a gold checkmark for business and a grey checkmark for government and “multilateral” accounts.

“Thanks for your patience as we’ve worked to make Blue better – we’re excited and looking forward to sharing more with you soon!” the company said.

Twitter Blue, which Musk marketed in November as a way of democratizing the once-coveted blue check, quickly ran into some embarrassing hiccups with its previous debut.

Twitter revealed subscribers would be able to edit tweets and have a blue check mark following a review.

Critics lampooned the idea of paying for the blue check mark, which was previously used mainly to authenticate celebrities, government officials and other public figures. Pranksters, meanwhile, purchased the $8 monthly subscription and created a slew of accounts parodying corporations and celebrities, which were mistaken by many as the real accounts due to the blue checkmarks.

In one case, a user purchased a Twitter Blue subscription for an impostor account of the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly, then announced that it would make insulin free for all customers. Lilly’s stock tanked soon after. In another, an imposter account designed to look like LeBron James’ longstanding Twitter handle claimed the star demanded to be traded away from the Los Angeles Lakers.

Twitter responded by suspending the program just days after the launch.

The social media company said Saturday that Twitter Blue subscribers who change their image, name or photo will temporarily lose their verification until their account is reviewed again, in what appears to be an attempt to crack down on the confusion over the parody accounts.

Twitter also revealed on Saturday the new rules surrounding how the social media giant would handle hateful language.

Samsung hopes to complete One UI 5.0 rollout before 2023

Samsung has become a force to reckon with when it comes to software updates for Android devices. The rollout of Android 13 and One UI 5.0 for various Galaxy devices is particularly impressive. Samsung has updated more than a dozen smartphones to Android 13, and it even released the update for a couple of mid-range phones before some of its flagships.

What’s also interesting is how Samsung has been updating more and more devices to Android 13 and One UI 5.0 considerably ahead of schedule in many countries. In fact, Samsung hopes to complete the entire rollout of the update across the globe for all devices before 2023 begins, as we were told in our recent interview with Sally Hyesoon Jeong, the Vice President of Android Framework R&D at Samsung Electronics.

We got to learn a lot more in our interview, the entirety of which you can read here, but the revelation that the company “would like to complete the rollout within this year” was the most unexpected and welcome little nugget of info that we received. It would be a tremendous feat if Samsung could provide the update to every device in every country before 2023, and even releasing the update for every eligible Galaxy device in a limited number of countries would be impressive.

That said, as we regularly point out, and like Samsung reminded us during the interview, no one can definitely say when a particular device will get an update. But still, the fact that Samsung is even thinking about completing the rollout this year is bonkers. Whether or not it will achieve that goal remains to be seen, although given how we see One UI 5.0 arriving on a new device almost every day, it does seem like a safe bet that the Korean giant could very well succeed.

Google finishes iOS 16 Lock Screen widgets rollout w/ Maps

Google is wrapping up the rollout of its iOS 16 Lock Screen widgets with Maps and Search for a total of six updated iPhone applications.

Version 6.40 of Google Maps introduces a pair of iOS 16 Lock Screen widgets. “Search” opens the app to the corresponding interface with your keyboard immediately ready for input. The 2×1 “Frequent Trips” could be powerful (depending on how often it updates) and notes the location, ETA, and traffic conditions.

  • Frequent Trips: Get directions and an estimated time of arrival for your frequent trips.
  • Search: Search in Google Maps for restaurants, gas stations, and more.

Meanwhile, the Google app has a total of five widgets, starting with two sizes (1×1 and 2×1) for Search. The rest are 1×1, with the last one for Lens possibly based on which filter you frequently use.

  • Search: Access Google Search from your Lock Screen.
  • Voice Search: Ask a question, hum a song, or search for content with your voice.
  • Lens: Search with your camera or any image.
  • Lens Shortcuts: Easily access your favorite Lens feature. Translate, shop, or solve homework with your camera.

These Google Search Lock Screen widgets are particularly well suited to replace Siri.

Maps and Search join Gmail, News, Drive, and Chrome as the first wave of Google apps with iOS Lock Screen widgets. After updating, be sure to launch each application before going to the Lock Screen editor to add or they might not appear.
